Title: What alt is the next best thing?
Post by: helloeverybody on June 25, 2016, 11:06:30 AM
Now that the dao and ethereum have taken a serious knockback after what looked like almost a crypto takeover who do you all think the new kid on the block is going to be? Whos mining what and what coin do you see as having the biggest potential?

It seems to me that for now the only coin worth having is bitcoin, Any other coins out there that aren't shitcoins?

To be honest, I believe only in Bitcoin and maybe Litecoin. Litecoin has a stable and good price, it is not a dump coin and it wont pump or dump any time soon. Those two are pretty much the only good coins around here.
Ethereum is just a pump and dump coin, no one should use it.

I dont know if i would buy litecoin to be honest, I thought it was kind of dead as well due to it not really being needed because of bitcoin. I know you could argue it the other way round since it came after bitcoin.

I just thought maybe theres a darkhorse out their that hasnt been given enough hype for people to buy into, kind of like ethereum before it kicked off. I had ample oportunitys to buy into it at really low prices but never bit, maybe the altcoin world is just going a bit stagnant for now.

LiteCoin is one of the best alternatives, but to be honest all the alternative cryptocurrencies are dead compared to Bitcoin. Bitcoin is the only legit cryptocurrency (with SOME alternatives such as LTC , PeerCoin perhaps, because they are stable and have decent prices for an altcoin).

Some system that is secure, but also has new elements to it. One that can beat Bitcoin. Which honestly shouldn't be that hard, because the Bitcoin project doesn't address any of the major issues: scalability, quite restricted contract system, some governance issues. If you look at failed projects like Sidechains and Lightning, then you'll see why Bitcoin will lose in the longterm. Its mostly now a project of a few crypto and opensource enthusiasts, who are not particularly interested or concerned with functionality, ease of use, widespread adoption, and don't think much about the economic primitives. If a currency can go from 70M$ to 1B$ in a few months, the network effect is in fact not that great as expected. Yes, most likely Bitcoin's market share will steadily decline. I'm not aware of any interesting release in the last 12-24 months. As for high quality release a better platform could help, filtering some spam. With that platform you are less likely to miss out on the next big thing.

Think of it this way...  There's only BTC, and the rest are like commodities or stocks that you trade in and out of to gain profit in BTC.  And it's more practical that way as BTC is the most accepted cryptocurrency by merchants and the most accepted to exchange for fiat.

I see some people mentioned LTC.  Litecoin to me is a safe haven coin in case something really bad happens with BTC where it's really needed to hold something else.  But that's just me.

There is a new coin called Ardor coming out coded by the Nxt developers. It's got what they call child chains that make its blockchain small. It's not mine-able, there's no ICO, you can only get it by holding Nxt between mid-July and mid-October. The Nxt developers will do hourly snapshots of the Nxt blockchain for those three months, then when Ardor starts whatever private keys were holding Nxt get Ardor.

The DAO locked up so many Ethereum that it pumped its price. Similarly, the Nxt/Ardor snapshots will lock up so many Nxt that it might pump Nxt's price for three months. Nxt and Ardor could be the next best thing.

Etherium and DAO get them the normal situation for now but I'm interested with EDRC coin, the value is better than Waves or LSK well I think this coin have a good future.

BitBay and Qora are two legitimate projects and both have market caps under $1 mil.  Definitely good to have in the short/medium term, unclear if they will see more long term success though.

Ive held NXT for about a year now with barely a difference in price. Whats happening in the coming months that would cause a possible price increase? Also thought nxt was the same developers as waves or at least working with them or something like that?

it's all shit. no one should be thinking about next best things. they should only be thinking about how much bitcoin they can extract from these things and then getting out.

if i was to nominate a coin that worked the way i liked it's gonna be peercoin. why that isn't anywhere compared to litecoin is a bit weird. it actually has some good ideas.

People won't want to sell their nxt while the snapshots are taking place, they will want to buy them.

Keep holding your nxt because you get free Ardor coins for holding them.

[ANN][ARDR][NO ICO] Ardor, or Nxt 2.0, a Scalable Child Chain Platform (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1518497.0)

...

Nxt is undergoing a dramatic evolution. Research by the Nxt team has led to Ardor, a platform that uses child chains and incorporates all of Nxt's latest blockchain innovations while being backed by the core developers of Nxt.

...

here are a few of the features coming with the new Ardor release:

1. Offering Blockchain as a Service ...

2. Manageable Blockchain Size ...

3. A Decentralized Asset Exchange ...

4. Decentralized Voting and Governance Systems ...

5. Phased Transactions ...

“Rather than providing smart contracts, NXT is focused on implementing the important use cases and functions directly into the core of both Nxt and Ardor. This approach has proven to be scalable and secure and will become more so when Ardor is released” Riker

...

You'll be able to participate in Ardor right away. As Ardor continues testing and development, Nxt 1.9 will be released. With Nxt 1.9, you'll get your first chance to own a piece of Ardor. All those who hold an amount of NXT will also get a piece of Ardor. Snapshots will start be taken on an hourly basis, starting on July 14th to October 12th. Then, your total NXT will be averaged, and you'll receive that amount in Ardor tokens on October 12th, which will be freely tradeable up until the Ardor system launches.

At block 1,000,000 on October 12th, 2016, snapshotting will stop, and you'll be allowed to trade your Ardor tokens in NXT 1.9 in preparation for the launch of the Ardor blockchain.

I see, wel thats interesting. The little nxt i do own has been sitting on an exchange (i do realise im committing cardinal sin by doing that). So who get my ardor coins? does the exchange get them then transfer them to me or do i need to take my nxt out and then get my ardor that way?

If you want to be sure of getting your Ardor you should withdraw your nxt from your exchange and put them in your own personal nxt wallet. The Ardor get sent to the private key you control through your wallet.

The nxt devs are in talks with exchanges about giving their customers their share of Ardor, but nothing's been agreed yet. If you leave your coins on an exchange you cannot be sure you will get your Ardor for them.

I think some altcoins serve most of the same functions as bitcoin.  If I know someone can sell me a bootleg Walking Dead DVD for Dogecoin, I can send that person some dogecoin.  And since dogecoin has value, I can put my savings in it if I wanted to.  It's risky as all hell, but it could pay off in the long run.

Bitcoin was the first, and if ordinary people know anything about crypto whatsoever, they know bitcoin exists.  All the other ones?  Not at all.  So bitcoin is where it's at, and the other ones are just wannabes.

You need to watch the market caps. Bitcoin is number one and Ether is number 2. The communities are very different. It makes sense that anyone holding bitcoin should also hold some ether. How much depends on market caps, if ether becomes closer to bitcoin buy more ether. The potential for future price increase for ether is greater than bitcoin, along with that I think comes more risk. But if you were risk averse you would not own bitcoin in the first place.

Unfortunately the only people who know what coins are going to pump are the whales that pump them,  and by the time they let you know which coin it is is because they are now ready to dump all their coins on you.

Does vaporware exist even though the ICO is underway, e.g. WAVES, Ethereum, etc.. when they were launched.

It is difficult to define the demarcation between "exist" and "talk" in Bitcointalk.

Darkened on purpose is usually to do a deceptive manipulation, such as an instamine, stealthmine, etc..

That's some fine lawyer-speak right there.  It's a yes and no answer which can be debated for hours with no real winner.  So I say you make a valid point.

Ok, imaginary non-launched coins exist without actually existing, and they may even take over the planet.  This Vitalik guy is like anti matter at this point, he's gonna destroy our new world with his Vapor.

I also think bitcoin is the only reliable altcoin in this emerging digital economy. But even in the case of our loved bitcoin I also prefer to avoid excessive confidence about its real potential, because all the computational sciences are greatly advancing every day, and I have no doubt that sooner or later this bitcoin could be displaced by one better option.

- Zerotime: secure instant transactions (0.23s) without possibility of double spend, without use of masternodes and respendable in 1 second

- Chainblender: decentralized, fungible and very fast anon system without blockchain bloat.

- Adaptive block size: "Don't discuss block size. Let the code handle it."

- Can perform thousands of transactions per second more than all transactions with VISA around the world.

- Poloniex audited the code and Vcash is the only altcoin accept with just 1 confirmation.

And much more soon as Zeroledger that will make most crypto-currencies seem like a bloated mess. It compiles and works on all modern OS and game consoles and even on the iWatch OS 2 it uses about 38 MB of RAM.

prolly something that is minable and has a new algo and some nice features, all the ico shit will not skyrocket, ethereum in fact was minable, also it need to be sorrounded by a certain amount of hype...

for now i don't see anything... i doubt it can be something we already know, but vcash, decred and spreadcoin are good canditate, if that is the case..., but in the end...i guess it might be something that still need to be created....

mmh, now that i think about it zerocash is a good option, new algo, no shitty ico, new features etc...it might be zerocash

At the moment I'm just not comfortable spending any bitcoin on alts just because bitcoin has  proved itself for long enough that putting the   bitcoin into anything is a  risky investmen.

Well, here is one that has not been mentioned yet... eMunie and it will finally be in Open Beta in the next few months. It is a pure transactional Database with no blockchain or block-tree. And as far as I know it is the only crypto-currency that has a working debit card system that is connected directly to your personal eMunie wallet.dat with NO 3rd parties to charge the 5 to 10 % fees to the merchants and or customers.

This is the killer feature that will have Joe & Jane Public caring around a crypto currency debit card, and they can even use a tablet to earn eMunie with. The client is only about 25MB in size so it can easily be ported to various phones.  Currently it runs in both windows and linux OS platforms.

1- IOTA        [Internet of Things]
2- eMunie     [elastic supply, decentralised exchange, decentralised debit card etc]
3- Pokereum [decentralised online Poker organised as a DAO]

all are genuine contenders for the 'next big thing'

IOTA, no doubt about it. It's so under the radar, yet works really well. A team that works hard to get a working product before a massive PR push is a winner in my book.

zerocach could be a good candidate if it is only GPU mineable and the market cap is big enough to absorb the Eth miners.

I would pick Gridcoin (GRC), as it is one of the more interesting coins out there. It's idea is brilliant but also easy to understand for people not in crypto before, see for example this thread that was on the frontpage of reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/4b4drk/a_currency_minted_by_doing_science/t1_d16hch5

It replaces mining with doing research for scientific projects, for example to cure Ebola (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/oet1/overview.do), fold proteins (https://boinc.bakerlab.org/) or find aliens (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/).

From a user's point of view, he simply has to run simulations from the different projects using the BOINC software (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/). Then the network comes to a consensus, who has contributed how much computing power to BOINC, which can be seen for example here (http://www.gridresearchcorp.com/gridcoin/?result&t=CPID_Leaderboard). This process is decentralized among all nodes, there is no central server issuing all coins like it is for example the case with Curecoin. In some blocks this consenus is saved in the blockchain and the reward one gets when staking a block is proportional to how much research was recently done for BOINC by this researcher.

The network is secured with Proof of Stake, but there is an additional (much bigger) reward depending on how much research the boinc account associated with the staking node has done.

Setting it all up has been quite complicated in the past, but the pool on pool.gridcoin.co has made alle this easier and already has more than 1100 active miners/researchers (http://pool.gridcoin.co/rankings)

I also has very active development, here is the main forum: https://cryptocointalk.com/forum/464-gridcoin-grc/
More information and tutorial to set it up here: www.gridcoin.us
If you are interested visit our IRC: https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net:6667/#gridcoin

I would say one to watch this year is Loyyal, it is a rewards coin and has some pretty impressive partners and people joining their board
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1508111.0

It is a re-branding from RBR (ribbitrewards) which are still available to buy now, but as to how RBR will exchange to Loyyal once it is released on a new chain is unknown but definitely one to watch.

I'm pinning my hopes on chesscoin development and roadmap is so far so good they even adopt the bella community for their ico which is a good move although the project is ambitious to think but if this is a succssful one or early adopters are really going to make huge profit..

I think Monero (XMR) has the potential to have a stable price. With a capitalization of $14 Million. Currently is the most profitable Altcoin to mine in MinerGate.

Bitcoin is probably the only cryptocurrency not unstable at the moment, and I think it will not change until there is a new cryptocurrency.
Currently, there are many altcoins who have potential, but we'll see which is going to take more market shares.

Hey can you mention what are those Altcoins you are saying with potential? I am wondering about it myself. But I know Monero has the potential since it has been praise by van der Laan, Bitcoin Maintainer.

Id be interested in knowing everyone's thoughts on Breakout Coin that Bittrex is involved with (as escrow at least). It seems to me like it could have potential but until you get a chance to see how its run, how do you tell? Either way, is it a good idea to grab some now, even if only to dump on the trade opening?

You should get some MINT

Switch from mining to minting. There is also a block reward halving coming up at the end of the year. Right now it is 10% per year, and it is dropping to 5% in December.
