Title: Introducing the BitPiece - BitPiec.es has a new look!
Post by: miffman on July 03, 2016, 09:00:02 PM
The BitPiece is a new physical bitcoin that stores a quarter of one bitcoin in a safe and aesthetically appealing manner. A big thank you to bigtimespaghetti for making this coin possible! The coin and hologram design was a joint effort between bigtimespaghetti and myself. It is through him that I am bringing a coin with such a beautiful design! Another big thank you goes out to the community for supporting me thus far! :)

Coin Specs

Material: Brass
Diameter: 29mm
Thickness: 2mm
Face value: 0.25BTC

Mintage:

Brass w/o plating: 100 (numbered 001-100)
Brass w/ silver plating: 10 (numbered 01-10)
Brass w/ gold plating: 5 (numbered 1-5)

Note that there are only 5 coins with gold plating, so there will only be 5 full sets available (i.e. 1 of each type with corresponding numbers)

Keys and key generation

The coin features a custom security anti-counterfeit hologram that secures the private key. Private keys were generated with the serpcoin software (https://github.com/jondale/serpcoin) which was modified in various ways in order to fit the coin and coin requirements. The exact code I used will be uploaded as an attachment. The private key generation was done on a fresh ubuntu install. It was done as follows:

-The serpcoin software prerequisits were installed and the software was downloaded
-Some of the scripts were modified as follows (not exactly in this order):
--removed the label section of the front part of the key entirely
--inverted the colours of the text and background of the first address characters
--added several iterations of the first address characters, one below the next (the character string may be replaced with the string "EMPTY!!!")
--removed the coin name and numbering from the label
--removed the private key in mini private key format along with the coin name and label entirely
--the config was changed to fit the size of the coin ****
-labels were then generated offline
-labels were printed on a dumb offline printer
-I ran the scrub.sh script
-Private keys are cut and are safely stored waiting for assembly.
-The fresh install of ubuntu was then destroyed.

No private keys or private key information was stored.

The modified software leaves a label with several iterations of the first characters of the address on the front and a QR code of the private key in Base58 Wallet Import format on the back. (i.e. Private keys start with the number 5) Note that the files MiniKey.py, scCopyAddress.php, run.sh and scrub.sh was not modified in any way.

Pricing:

Prices for each type of coin (Please check the reservation list for availability):

Brass w/o plating:

0.085BTC for one,
0.08BTC for 15 coins or more,
0.075BTC for 25 coins or more

Brass w/ silver plating:

0.135BTC for one

Brass w/ gold plating:

N/A (None of these types of coins will be directly for sale)

Coins are shipped in an airtight and a small plastic bag.

Please note that prices for all coins are static! Spikes and crashes will not affect the price.

Funded and unfunded coins

All coins will either be funded or unfunded.

Funded coins

Funded coins will have will the first 6-8 characters displayed through the hologram window. To purchase a funded coin, please let me know that you would like your coin to be funded and send over the funding amount with along with the cost per coin as stated above. The full amount including funded will need to be received (or escrowed) or the coin will not be shipped. Coins will be funded after you receive them.

A signed list of addresses for funding will be posted. To avoid any ambiguity that might be present in the first few characters of an address, I've written a java program that checks the first n characters of a list of addresses that would be generated by the serpcoin generator. The addresses I am using for funding all have unique first four characters. The program runs solely on the output file 'addr.sav' created by the serpcoin key generator.

Unfunded coins

Unfunded coins will have the text "EMPTY!!!" displaying through the window
of the hologram. Should you wish to fund your coin at some point, I will have a separate PGP signed list of the address corresponding to each coin via it's coin number. This will be updated as coins are assembled.

Shipping

Shipping will be done on a case-by-case basis. All shipping orders will have tracking.

To help get things started with shipping, I have contacted Mitchell and minerjones to help. There will be an group buy for all initial orders ('initial orders' is used loosely). The way this will proceed is as follows:

-You can make your reservations (and orders when they open)
-Place your order/reservation into the group buy which will be opened by Mitchell
-I will ship all coins from the group buy to Mitchell
-Mitchell will then ship all US orders to minerjones, who will then handle the reshipping. It is unconfirmed where non-US and non-EU orders will go, but it will be finalized before sales begin.

There might be some minor changes to the logistics of this, but it will be ironed out before sales and shipping begins.

The reason for the initial group buy was to allow for a cheaper price per coin (I recommend buying them through group buys all the time, so you can get the best possible price) and to cater for funded coins going to the US. After the group buy I will have coins go directly to the US but I am yet to decide how I will go about doing this. I will post an update when I decide what is feasible.

Disclaimers and extras

-No refunds.

-If you are unsatisfied with the purchase, please contact me directly.

-When placing an order, please let me know if you would like your coin(s) to be funded or unfunded. Once you have paid, the purchase and it's funding state is final.

-As with any coin batch, some of the coins have fine hairline scratches. This is inevitable with many coins. I have noticed that some coins out of the batch have significantly worse scratching or other defects. These coins will not be sold, but either discarded or free raffled or similar. Other coins with a noticeable amount of scratching will be listed as such.

-Also note that the gold plating looks fairly similar to the brass coin without plating. However, the difference between the coins is easier to see when placed side by side.

To avoid scammers, pay to only this address if you order through me:

Reservations:

If you would like to make a reservation, please post in this thread which coin numbers and types you would like to reserve. Do not PM me. I will not reserve coins for anyone in private.

Please note that I may reject any reservation. Larger reservations made by new members will not be made.

To reiterate what I have mentioned in the OP, you will notice some coins are listed as 'discard'. Also note that some coins have noteworthy defects which are noted in brackets. I am trying to avoid unhappy customers, so please reserve another number if you don't want a said defect.

Here is a list of the available coins:

**Please PM! Only very few defect coins left**

I am a little disappointed in the severely limited quantity of coins (silver & gold plating) and some users being a bit too greedy.  I will take #70.  Would've liked to get the others but yeah...    I guess not.   ::)

I would be happy to offer any of my numbers to you....except 13,25,& 75.
I ordered a large quantity to help out with group buys for EU and US and to get the discount per coin....saving money is not a bad thing ;)
Please do not think as greed...I do not need more than 1 or 2 of these coins.

thanks

Please remember that all orders related to the US will be shipped to minerjones via Mitchell and all EU orders will be processed by Mitchell  :)

I edited your quote in bold so it correct with the current post  :)

In my opinion funded coins should be paid upfront, then shipped, once they reach the final recipient they can then be funded by miffman.

Just to clarify things about shipping to avoid any confusion:

If you are in the EU, please post your reservation in Mitchell's group buy thread.

If you are not in the EU, please post in minerjones' group buy thread.

All the coins from minerjones' group buy will be sent in one package to Mitchell. Mitchell will then send the entire package to minerjones who will then do distribution.

Payment and shipping costs and other details will be ironed out in the next few days. All coins will need to be paid for including the funding amount before shipment.

Let me know if you have any further questions!

Is there a timeline for shipping and/or group buys to be finished?
I did not see a mention of this in the OP.

thank you

There is no confirmed end date for group buys to be finished, but I'd say about one week left. If you or Mitchell would like to close the group buy earlier, that's no problem too.  :)

I will post a confirmed time here saying how many days are left in the next day or so.

Sales are now open! What does this mean? It means you can place on order directly from any of the available coins.

The format for ordering is:

Coin numbers:
Which coins to be funded:
Address:

and I will work out a price including tracked shipping.

"What about the group buys or my reservations?"

If you have a reservation, I would highly recommend that you add your reservation to Mitchell's group buy if you are located in the EU, or to minerjones' group buy if you are anywhere else. You may save money per coin and/or on shipping. I will ask group buys to close in 3 days from now.

If you are in the US and want funded coins, you will have to be part of minerjones' group buy. When the group buy closes, I will have another way to ship to the US shortly.

If you would not like to be part of the group buy, then PM with the format above to place your order.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask or PM.

EDIT: To avoid scammers, pay to only this address if you order through me:

19GFXUea9mFGeTiWpGaQWFiazuH3koCnsZ

EDIT 2: Key generator and unique first character checker added to 4th post of the thread!

With regards to payments and group buys:

Please pay your respective group buy runner, if you are part of a group buy, instead of me.

-If you are part of Mitchell's group buy, please pay Mitchell when it is requested.
-If you are part of minerjones's group buy, please pay minerjones when it is requested.

Let them know which coins you want and which you wanted funded etc.

-If you are not part of either group buy and don't want to be, then use the order form from my previous post to make an order.

I have found that there is scratching on the bitcoin logo on coin 16. It is no longer reserved.

In the unlikely event that this happens, I will let the buyer/reserver know and work out a mutual solution.

In the unlikely event that this happens, I will let the buyer/reserver know and work out a mutual solution.

That was very good of you to let me know, sir. Much appreciated!  :)

After finding the defect earlier, I was worried I may have missed some more. Unfortunately, I did.  :( I will contact the respective buyers/reservers shortly to find some alternative. In the mean time, I have reserved the remaining non-defect coins until all coin defect issues are ironed out. Here is a list of the coins I have found with out noteworthy defects:

32 - scratches and 2 milkspots
53 - small scratch patch
54 - general scratching
61 - scratch and two small tarnish circles
62 - a spot on the raised quarter
75 - big fingerprint
86 - normal and hairline scratch patch

Again, I apologize for this. I am trying to avoid any unhappy customers.

How big a fingerprint we talkin' here on #75??  :D
That was going to be my funded one :P

It's fairly big. :( not sure why I missed it first time round! ...And also not sure why an employee from the mint would leave a fingerprint in the first place.

One of the things I had to employ in my recent run of coins was take a period of time to closely inspect the coins once they arrived.

I got a mountable magnifying glass with an adjustable stand and used it with appropriate lighting to see blemishes, scratches, milk spots, missing gold plating. Of course no coin is perfect. But I did find some that needed to be "dealt" with.

It's a very tedious task. Very good of you to do this with your batch of coins.  :)

Thanks, smoothie  :) I am realizing very quickly that the improper lighting can very easily trick an untrained eye. Even though it's unlikely that I'll make more coins, learning how to inspect coins properly is valuable skill on its own.

Natural light vs white light vs tinted light all produce different variations of issues with coins, at least in my own experience.

As Miffman eluded to you can see a coin in natural light and it looks good even with a magnifying glass but you change the lighting and the issues become more obvious/apparent.

Definitely a good skill to have and be aware of when dealing with gradeable coins.

All reservations numbers with a strikethrough are coins that have been ordered and paid for. I will update all the groupbuy's coins once I have received payment for it.

A few small parcels have been shipped out. I will PM your tracking shortly. Please note that any orders placed directly through me from now will ship next week (18th July). All subsequent orders will be shipped shortly on some working day.

Thank you!

Hi miffman, nice job with the coin. Is my calculation off or are these going for about $50 each and that is unloaded, correct? And they are made of bronze? Not sure if I am missing something here but that seems to be a high price point no?

Hi f*D, thanks! Yes, the price in USD or any other currency is a bit more expensive than other coins. I have been working on the coin for a long time, and all coins and coin components were purchased in BTC some time ago (months). This is why the price is static in BTC. Should there be any massive price swings (say to 1$ or even 2000$), the price won't change.

Hope that clears things up  :)

Just a quick update:

-Sales are halted. They will resume once the group buys finish. On the assumption that all works out smoothly, there will be 6 coins without significant defects for sale.

-Some packages have been shipped. I have PM'd out tracking numbers if your parcel was shipped. I will try to ship out more smaller parcels this next week and next week.

-The groupbuy will update today. EU buyers will need to pay Mitchell when he updates the thread, which will be soon. Sorry for the slight delay. In the meantime, I have still been assembling coins from the US group buy even though the group buy payments have not been received by me. There are still quite a few coins to be assembled, but I will try to get to all of them as quickly and as best as I can.

-The OP is not up to date.

-I may auction the lot of discard coins and defect coins together at some point. I may just throw them away instead.

Thanks for all your patience thus far!  :)

Found an interesting offset on 022/100
there maybe a few others out there. so far other coins do not have this offset.  I guess it's an error or a VAMish like situation.  I like this!

Just a quick update:

All unfunded coins for the group buy are assembled, funded coins to be assembled. I will have more time per day this weekend to assemble them. Apologies for the slight delay, coin assembly is a bit more time consuming than I thought initially. Some smaller packages to go out soon.

Here is a list of all addresses to be used for funded BitPieces (PGP signed) http://pastebin.com/QuGhHZNY

On the lighter side, I realized that I may very well be the first physical cryptocoin maker on the continent  ;D Not that anyone is keeping track, but still cool I guess.

Out of the 30 coin makers I wrote to for the autographed labels for the Encyclopedia, none of them were in your continent, so you may be right.

The group buy orders are shipped! :) I covered a bit more to get express shipping, so it shouldn't take too long to get to Mitchell. I'm in the process of finding out pricing for express shipping from Mitchell to minerjones. Hopefully it won't be overly expensive.

Thank you for your patience! I will do my best to get to the smaller orders soon. Once those dispatch, I will put up the auctions for sets #1 and #2.

Once all the dust settles, and there are no issues, there will be 5 coins left for sale.

#87
#92
#93
#97
#98

Coins #78 and #79 were going to be prizes for a contest or prizes for creating something like an address scanner. I have decided that I'm going to keep them instead.

If you have received your coins and they are meant to be funded, please message me with your coin number and I will get funding out.

The address correspondence list will go up soon.

Please note that it is now unlikely that I will sell the remaining coins that were left of this batch. Only set #1 is left. Set #1 will still be auctioned, and I will be keeping set #2 for myself.

I received coins #15 and #18 nearly two months after ordering them. We thought they were lost in transit but they arrived to my surprise. The tracking was never updated so no way of figuring out where they were.

However they were supposed to be funded and since we thought they were lost I have received a refund from Miffman.
2 months later I don't have coins to fund them. Miffman has been helping with the post office all the way along.

So I'd keep the coins but want to make sure people are aware that 2 coins have addresses in the back and are not labelled empty.
Just in case they get sold in the future (which I'm not planning).

The coin addresses are:

15  1BC5oRHcusyMDN6SSfhJdFMmE6d3Vp1GQ4

18  1NWozzdSzD7J5RLL2UYKWThtUJ4aonXc6E

One of the last updates:

According to my lists with coin info, it seems that all coins that need to be funded are funded. The PGP list was updated a few days ago to reflect this. (It is 3 posts away from the OP)

A few more unfunded coins (<5) were traded and some were sent to Chronos for a video review.

I decided to keep set #2 for myself, and set #1 will be auctioned at some point in the near future.

Thank you all for the support over the course of this series!  :)

So none of this series left?
Let me know when the auction happens for set #1 or #2. I might bid if not to high.

Let me know when the next batch are released.
Be looking to buy in bulk as these coins (funded when sent out) are exactly what I am looking to buy.

Thanks! ;D

If you didn't mention it I thought it was an actual silver bitpiece LOL

It does look like an actual BitPiece!  ;D

So none of this series left?
Let me know when the auction happens for set #1 or #2. I might bid if not to high.

Let me know when the next batch are released.
Be looking to buy in bulk as these coins (funded when sent out) are exactly what I am looking to buy.

Thanks! ;D

Not many left, mostly just defect coins left. I can PM you when I am home to see what is left.

I would be interested in the coins that defective if at a good price to get them off your hands.
Just want to see the craftmanship thats all before I buy in bulk for the next series.
PM the price and details you need from me to ship that defective one that you have.
I will buy.

Ahh the holy grail of bitpieces

No plans to sell .999 silver?

No plans as of now. I am slowly discussing the possibility of the small 5-coin series 2 BitPieces. But no teasers for now! :)
Interested in series 2...

I can absolutely give a heads up to anyone interested. Only kick is that if the series does come to life, all pieces will be auctioned.

I would be but after I buy and receive the defective ones from miffman since we have been dealing for one or two of them.
Just waiting on him for a pm with his price on his pieces he is offering.
Then might consider buying in bulk from you by then upon viewing the quality of the coins first.
Thanks for the offer.

Great review Chronos Crypto, but you gotta get them gloves on man!

Protect the coins from your finger prints!

And yes, totally agree, BitPiece is a gorgeous coin!

The signed address correspondence paste was updated. There are only small updates to be made now, like the addresses of my set #2, and labeling the blanks as empty. This will be done in the new year.

Thanks!

Hey miffman congrats on the completion of your first line, is there a plan for a coin release in 2017 or in the future?  Thanks

There were talks about another serie from Miffman but not sure if that has gone any further.
Be interesting to know. Loved the BitPiece!

Thanks wheelz and coin@coin! Nothing set in stone for a round 2. I do want to make some special limited pieces, but I would need to use Salty's mint services for it since a normal mint would not be able to produce it. :)

If things begin, I will definitely open another thread for it!

Have a happy new year, all!

I've been meaning to let everyone know that I've updated the BitPiec.es (http://BitPiec.es) website to make it a bit easier to use and a bit more visually pleasing. I've added a couple of small changes as well like a contact page and a statistics page, but nothing major. The design template came from https://templated.co/.

Let me know if you like it!  :)

I've also gotten round to adding the addresses from the set of BitPiec.es I own (set #2). I decided to leave them as unfunded even though it's labelled as funded. This is updated on the website. With all the current price movement in the cryptocoin space, I'd like to hold onto the raw BTC. :) If anyone has a problem with this, feel free to reply/PM and I will be happy to discuss it.

And lastly, I've been dabbling with an idea for another round of coins. I thought it would be a cool idea to create some physical coins that have not just loaded BTC, but loaded timelocked BTC. I'm a bit reluctant as of right now due to all the price swings, but also because I can imagine more people would want to move away from funded coins altogether. I could do an unfunded coin, but I don't see much point in timelocking 0BTC  ;D I'm all ears to hear what anyone has to say about this idea!

Miffman its good to see a possible round 2 of coins from you.  I liked the design of the first ones a lot.  I think time locked btc coins would be a cool idea.  I would though like to see some lower denominations if you do this though maybe .01 to .10btc.

Maybe the time-lock could be set to a certain significant date, like the next halving or something!! :D

That was one of the ideas, and to have it timelocked with 1/100th of the new block reward value  ;)

I like the new template, definitely fresh and I'm looking forward to hearing what you come up with for the next series.  :)
