Title: Using Bitcoin for those in need.
Post by: AioFox on July 18, 2016, 07:12:51 PM
"Given that bitcoin and the blockchain are still misunderstood in the eyes of the public, industry proponents have long sought to showcase how the digital currency’s attributes can be used to the advantage of global relief and philanthropy efforts.

For incumbent financial services firms, eager to avoid the negative connotations bitcoin can bring, such efforts are often the first step in their engagement with the industry.

This year, UK banking giant Barclays and investment firm Fidelity each announced their first foray into bitcoin and blockchain. Both projects were advertised as benefitting those in need. "

I think its a good move to bring the world to a better place. I found this article and i was intrigued by how much bitcoin has grown and how dependent it has become to help those in need.  I also read in some other thread that bitcoin is being used for relief efforts across the globe to help those who have just faced a natural disaster.

As bitcoin grows it is inevitable that it will be used for charity and other things (even crime).  Any payment method will have such uses once they grow large enough.  And yes, it is good for both bitcoin and the people.

I have seen bitcoin be using many times in the donation websites, also few users here use bitcoin for charity. For example, bitcoincharity.org aka donatemedia accepts bitcoin for donation, few members also wear signature here.
Bitcoin is spread everywhere and accepting donations on bitcoin is fantastic.

That's true but I don't think normal users who are working really hard to earn bitcoin will believe in charity and will prefer to donate their hard earned coins.

I can't argue that bitcoin should be used for good causes like charity and such, but let's face it - there's little response for noble causes compared to less noble ones.
Recent articles about political parties starting to use bitcoin to fund their campaigns on the other hand.. that's where things will erupt...

Saying the truth bitcoin is not as hard as we think to own, people can work hard besides bitcoin (paypal or in real life) and then buying bitcoins and still able to donate, but for people that earn only in bitcoin that's a bit hard for them.
If people do not trust these charity websites then this is another thing to be discussed.

Let's be realistic for a moment here, we are living in a reality where half of world's wealth now in hands of 1% of population.

I don't have more recent data, but according to Wikipedia:

In 2007, 147 companies controlled nearly 40 percent of the monetary value of all transnational corporations.

Bitcoin initiatives are amazing and it is great that people are trying, but without the richest people helping we have very little chance to change the world for good.
We can only patch its wounds.

Uh huh,  plus the total value of all bitcoin in existence is low enough that Warren Buffett could buy it all if he wanted to.  And most bitcoiners are young folks not (yet) into philanthropy.   I will never give to a charity whilst I'm alive.  I don't believe in it.

Actually Most users are not prefered to donate some of their coins to the charity websites of course how can we be sure that our donations will be truly going through the real charity and reaches those people i need . And we are not actually sure that these websites are real charity websites .

There are lots of helping hands in bitcoin community, especially those who have enough to donate.

I saw this thread yesterday here in the forum https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=351789.0
Bitcoin Omega Scholarship, it aims to give scholarship to the low-income kids on Africa through bitcoin. The idea was great imo, and the plan is good as well since you'll be having an update with the kids. There have been sponsors who did pledge, but sadly it seems that the plan will not proceed anymore.

Sometimes, there are some parties just made a charity to scam another people is interested with the charity. and in this time, a lot of people is just using a name of charity for their personal interest. and it's not a surprise if the  many people is not believed about the charity.

I agree it's great if Btc is used more for charity and everything. This way it can overcome the popularity of a currency used for illegal activities because of its anonymity

I saw some web sites when you can give Bitcoin for charity and that is realy noble thing to do and also promotes Bitcoin on good way. Crowdfunding sites could be used in similar way.

Seeing how threads like this, where we discuss bitcoin as new era financial tool useful for helping people in need are unpopular among bitcoiners.
I doubt that Bitcoin will have a huge impact, if any on the charity world. I guess you can receive tax refund for bitcoin donations...

This isn't something new to me. I've personally seen some of my friends doing some charity work. For the poor and homeless, and somewhat for the publicity of bitcoins. It's like hitting two birds with one stone.
Although that might not have sounded very well as some people would think that they are only scheming of making bitcoins popular.

Would think that this would be one of the primary features of the bitcoin, least as far as use cases go. It's simply perfect for setting up a virtual deposit box anyone could access to fund. But instead of charities, we get icos. If BitcoinsNotBombs, or the btc food for homeless dude here had gotten 1% of the DAO funding, lives would have actually been changed.

Bitcoins is simply money and money can be used to help those in distress. It just means that those banks you mentioned have decided to send money in form of bitcoins, that's all.

It goes to show how well the society has absorbed the idea of cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin itself is a thing for need and a solution for removing poverty, so try to teach all of the poor people to earn money with bitcoin, if they do not have access to internet then donate some bitcoins to them to provide an internet connection and make them rich also.

I think it is a good idea to give bitcoins in charity as this will bring bitcoin some good name as many people are under wromg impression that bitcoin is mostly used in illegal activities or in dark market.on a second thought what good would bitcoin do to any charity organisation if we donate them some?bitcoin orice is unstable. If I donate 1000$ worth of bitcoin today and btc price fall after my donation,The charity i donate btc to would suffer loss

i think if we donate bitcoin just on thinking to help to the poor people i that that is the best action to do. bot for this we cannot believe on every organization and they my not give the donation to the needy people infact.

Yes it's very true many people don't like charity because of the price, Bitcoin price is always changing and people are not earning enough money to pay charities, even through faucets now days people are earning only maximum 200 sats that is very low due to price increases the faucets owners are reducing earning.Because of these they need earn minimum 10000sats it is taking more than 2 to 4 days.BTC

OP, that must be a very old article, because Barclays has joined ranks with the E3 group of banks, and they are backing other Alt coins like ETH or some shit like that. These corporate entities do not care about poverty, they created it, with their fractional reserve banking and scrupulous lending practices. ^hmmmmm^

this is a great idea and it think there is already a lot of places that are accepting donations for charity and helping those in need there is a list of them on wiki: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Donation-accepting_organizations_and_projects although i only see one charity there.
but also google brings up good results https://www.google.com/search?q=donate+bitcoin+to+charity and you may want to research about any of them before donating to see if they are legit or not.

also there is this Donate Bitcoin to the American Red Cross - BitPay (https://bitpay.com/520663/donate)

unicef doesn't accept bitcoin though!! (https://www.unicef.org.nz/donate/ways-to-give)

also http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/36273/bitcoin-accepted-charities-or-organizations

Well is very good to hear bitcoins being accepted for many things, for my personal uses bitcoins give me chance to avoid the politics regulations of my country and this is really good for making business and get better life style  ::)

that is not such a difficult job. because bitcoin is your assets and you can use your assets for helping the needy people. if they cannot receive it directly you can exchange it with fiat money and can indirectly help them through bitcoin.

There used to be a lot more projects here revolved around charity and it seems like most of them just went away (just a personal observation).
Sure, there still are some projects, but they don't even come close to the attention that charity projects used to get here.

true, that if bitcoin's getting received by the company and the entire people for sure it will be very positive impact to the growth of the bitcoin and also it will encourage all companies or entrepreneurs to use the bitcoin as one payment
