Every machine you want to store Bitcoin on should have its own wallet. If you have the same wallet on two machines, there can and will be a lot of problems.

What I believe you are asking is why people have multiple addresses. Addresses are different from wallets. A wallet is a collection of addresses.

The reason for having multiple addresses is to preserve privacy and security. It is not advised to reuse addresses since it both allows people to see how much money you have and reduces plausible deniability. By giving out different addresses for different payments, the people paying you cannot know for certain how much money you have. For security, if ECDSA happens to be broken, not reusing addresses helps protect your Bitcoin. The public key for an address is exposed when you send Bitcoin. If ECDSA is broken. then by the time your public key is exposed (and thus allowing attackers to find the private key to steal your Bitcoin), the Bitcoin is already gone from the address so there is nothing to steal.

First make sure you understand the difference between a wallet[1] and addresses[2]. You can have as many wallets as you like. You dont have to though. I have a main wallet, one on the phone, one on my laptop, an escrow wallet and another one on an offline system. Each for a different reason. The offline system is for long term, high security. The main wallet is for day to day transactions. The phone wallet is used when I know I will be able to pay with bitcoin in a store or trade face to face. The laptop wallet is somewhere between the main wallet and the phone wallet. The escrow wallet is solely used for funds I hold for someone else. This is mainly because I dont want that to get mixed up. I could do it within a wallet, but its easier that way.

[1] helps you secure and organize private keys
[2] are derived from the private key and used to receive bitcoin

It's not essential to own so many wallets mate, if you have just one secured wallet, it's enough already.
Personally i use more than one because sometimes we need special wallets to make some deals

If you have one BitCoin and you send half of it to someone else, the change will sometimes go to a new Wallet Address, so when you next send funds (in this example) to the person, they in turn will appear to have come from a different Wallet Address than the first transaction.  Doesn't happen all the time and I don't think it happens on all Wallets either.

If you work with faucets, technically you will have many different wallets by nature, although you do not have complete control over faucet wallets, just the funds that eventually come to you, and even then, most times, they are held in escrow linked to the address you give them until you reach a payment threshold to avoid littering the blocks with nonsensical transactions. Personally, I don't really have other wallets besides my Xapo wallet and Electrum wallets. I do have funds in places like faucetbox and other places but those are really just temporary storage until I can reach the payout thresholds to get them. :)

I personally have a few wallet, which consists of :

1. Electrum (MAIN WALLET)
2. Blockchains.info
3. Coinbase
4. Some wallet from exchanger ( I suggest you do not save a lot of money in the exchanger wallet )

Hey guys, so I am a newbie and i saw some of members here have multiple bitcoin wallets , why is that? do i need to make multiple bitcoin wallets as a beginner ?

others have explained the difference between wallet and BTC address so i am not getting into that.

but the only reason for having multiple wallets is the different usages you get from different wallets. for example usually people do it this way:
- a cold storage (1 wallet) like paper wallet to hold your main large amount of bitcoin in order to keep it safe
- a hot wallet (like desktop, phone or web wallet) in order to spend bitcoin daily and have it nearby, always accessible.

but remember having more wallets means having to remember more passwords for encryption, ... and that can be challenging.

As a beginner you do not really must have a lot of wallets. but I use several wallets for security, so I do not put a lot of bitcoin on one wallet, and to avoid the bad things that happen. or when the other wallets impaired, and I could use another wallet.

I have multiple wallets for different purposes.

1. Trezor - Hardware wallet for safe storage and easy spending at the same time
2. Cold wallet - Second safe storage for a second part of my coins, like to spread things out.
3. Hot wallets - on my pc, laptop, phone for easy spending, low amounts only. If needed I trasnfer from trezor.
4. Exchange wallets - We can't fully get around them. Low amounts only.

For those using web wallets, please reconsider, it wouldn't be the frist time they run away.

It depends on how many BTCs you have. If you only have a small number of coins I would recommend only using a online wallet. But if you store quit a lot of money in bitcoins you should definitely go for a desktop wallet.

It also depends on how you earn your bitcoins. If you are doing faucets it might be a good choice to make a new wallet at xapo as you can get instant withdraws on most sites.

Just sharing, personally I am holding a couple of wallets with each serving different purposes:

1. Desktop wallets (Main storage) - Make sure you have your keys or recovery phrase backup properly!
2. Phone wallets - Sync with my Desktop wallets
2. Exchange wallets (Web) - For trading purposes (low amounts only)

And no, it is not necessary to make multiple wallets as a beginner if you're holding a small amount ;)

If you're talking about wallets, I have around 3, one of which is an offline one and two are online. Most of my btc is stored in the offline wallet and the online are used to send small transactions. If you're talking about addresses I have one main address I use for the offline and several for the online.

I agree with what you said and in addition to that, it will even give the user the flexibility of dedicating each address for different purpose like one on bitcoin talk, another for claiming faucets, another for trading etc but all going into one wallet...

Don't trust any exchange wallet this may save you from some lost coins drama! Always use a desktop wallet or elec and get a spare wallet for cold storage (aka offline) if you want to carry BTC with you on the mobile always loaded it with what you need. Keep an eye on rooted phones not so safe usually

The main reason that most people have multiple Bitcoin wallets is for the further security of their Bitcoin. Logically, if you have more than one wallet and split your Bitcoin evenly there is less chance that you will lose all of your Bitcoin via hacking.

It really depends on a person on how many wallets does he want to make it depends on his purpose.

It's not necessary to make multiple bitcoin wallets. In some cases you can have a mobile wallet, desktop wallet and cloud wallett.
I have an electrum desktop wallet which I store 0.1BTC on which is kept fairly safe and the see is stored in a separate location.
I also have a coinbase wallet of 0.07BTC which I use to be a "hot" and active wallet which covers transaction fees so makes it easier to move funds to different online wallets.

For a beginner, I'd suggest picking blockchain.info or coinbase.com for storing your bitcoins (as you probably won't have many to store).

I personally use several renowned bitcoin wallet, because I do not think there are things that can be trusted in addition, we ourselves manage. And to avoid the things that I do not want, I split my bitcoin, into some of the wallet providers. Although it makes me have to pay a lot of fees if the transaction, but it's worth it when considering safety. And if one wallet closed, I just lost a few percent of the total bitcoin I have. IMO

People most likely do it for more privacy, eg, People can not see how many BTC you have, it also adds another layer of security, If someone hacks your wallet, you still have your backup-wallets.

The problem with this thought is your holding all your coin's in a hotwallet.   This can end bad if there is ever a security breach, granted blockchain.info has good history but still you should use cold storage depending on the amount.    A properly done paper wallet can have a huge security advantage over a hot wallet.

So if you are storing any sizeable amount I would re-think that idea.  Possibly investing in hardware wallet which in case of say Trezor are easy to keep secure for most.  Or looking into mentioned paper wallet as they really are secure if done right, and the key is done right one security issue on computer when creating it can defeat all paper wallet security if key/seed is compromised.

Just one really and it's a Coinbase wallet too. I know it's probably not the wisest setup but I like to have all of my stuff in one place, it's just too much of a headache to keep track of tons of different accounts. And for me an online wallet is the obvious choice because again it makes things simpler, I don't have to keep track of my private keys or remember to bring my local wallet with me, I can access my Bitcoins from any computer anywhere in the world without having to download and install anything :)

I've been involved in Bitcoin a while and found that I've had different wallets for different things. In other words some wallets are better depending what I want to do. For example, when things were just starting out I ran a full-node Bitcoin desktop wallet as there were no other options. I did that while moving coins into and out of Mt.Gox (I always kept a minimum stored there long term, and lost only around $5 when they blew up). Then Blockchain.info started up and made wallet management easier (no sync time). As other wallets and other coins came out I used them as needed. So now I have various wallets on the web and accounts at different exchanges, but low actual balances on them until I need to do something specific.

Atleast segment the addresses inside your single wallet to manage it well.

too many wallet can make you confused and you do not must have a lot of wallets. but if you need something different from other wallet, maybe you can use more than one. I only use one wallet and I think this is simple and easy. but sometimes I keep my bitcoin in the local exchange, because it was very reliable so I'm not too worried save many bitcoin there, because it is very safe. essentially people using more than one wallet, it could to secure their bitcoin, so do not keep too many bitcoin on one wallet to avoid something bad happens, like getting a hacker.

Right now I am using 6 diffent addresses for different purposes.

3 addresses are purely dedicated to be used as cold storage for my coins.
1 address is for here on Bitcointalk.
2 addresses are being used for the general sending and receiving stuff. These however get changed from time to time.

I use block.io because it is the simplest wallet that i could use and also provide dogecoins and litecoins wallet and blockchain.info is obviously the best online wallet.

i have only one bitcoin wallet because i am pretty new here and do not have much experience about bitcoin. i have the only one wallet where i keep my bitcoin that i earn from signature campaign or buying bitcoin directly.
You dont need to have many wallets because its very confusing. You might get confused about the names or passwords of your own wallets. If you have small amount of btc, one wallet is enough. Me, im using two wallet. One is for receiving and the other is a local wallet which i can convert btc to cash.

Yeah right! You are new in bitcoin so just stick to one wallet. So you are using 2 wallet? just because of that reason? why?  for security? :D just asking got a little bit curious about it.
Then mine is got 2 wallet also one is the wallet is base on our country and one is for other country or outside and its famous im using 2 because if i am using my local wallet and someone sending money outside it is pretty slow thats why :D

As of now I've two bitcoin wallets. For regular transactions Blockchain.info is used as it gives the much easier accessibility compared to other wallets. Localbitcoins.com is used for long term holding for the high security feature.

I think localbitcoins.com is a exchange site and keeping bitcoins in that wallet is high risky as if the exchange got hacked or any other problem comes, then your bitcoins will be problem as you are not holding the wallet it is third party service which you are using it, which dont have full control to you. So it is better that you can use blockchain.info or any desktop wallet or hardware wallet which is more safe as you will be having full control of the wallet.

i am using coinbase or online webwallet and electrum for desktop wallet.

In the beginner, it is not necessary, if you are not doing investment or trading, if you are doing only work on signature campaign than i think only one is enough but mostly members are have multiple wallets because they are doing other investment and also it is easy way to use the bitcoin in anywhere.

I think that even with only one wallet is enough for people but because of lots of hacks recently I think we should use 2 wallets.

What i prefer to do is to have one as the hot wallet where we use it for everyday or every week use.

And another one (preferably) a hardware wallet which we can use as a cold storage and as a hot wallet for a rarer use.

Can you explain what a hardware wallet gets you interested to such level that you prefer to use it?

I don't really see the need for a hardware wallet as it only adds extra cost.

You can just save your secured wallet files in a CD, USB, HDD, and the list goes on. And this is free since people have these things already at home.

I think I have registered for about 7 wallets but only really use 3 main ones so not to hold all my eggs in one basket as they say.
Doing so would comprise what you have and just like with money if you have it stashed away under your mattress you will lose it all if a thief comes and robs you or the house burns down. Now that would be the most likely scenario too happen if you rely just on one wallet to hold all your bitcoin in. :-X

Many prefer hardware wallets as there is less chances of losing the coins and the wallet getting hacked. I agree about the cost but those who earn or hold over 10-15 BTC prefer using hardware wallets (like the ones who hold coins for this forum and own over 250 BTC). For them, it's useful but not for us or those who hold less coins for their use.

You really dont  many wallet and it depends  on how  you would use it, if you have many transaction then create another its really depends on persons reference if he would create or not. Some may only create  one so that  it wouldnt be hassle on future transaction but other likes to make a new one on what  purpose  he would made. I do have  only 2 wallet  which is blockchain.info and coins.ph

I too own 10 wallets and keep about 25% in the ones I trust the most and remaining coins in others. With the increase in wallets getting hacked easily, I stopped using apps too and have a physical bitcoin wallet. I guess paper wallets are much more reliable than software wallets but if one particular wallet shuts down, it will still be a loss for us.

i think it is useful too for us that holding small amount. I never stock my btc in online wallet for long time because i heard some complain to other user that there wallet
is ban because they deposit btc from gambling site. That triggers me to avoid online wallet and download hard wallet because i always gambling and it is too risky to stock my btc. I dont like to use mixer because it requires fee and my btc is very small for that procedure. So i think hardware wallet is the best.

i think it is useful to have two or more bitcoin wallet if you have bitcoins or other altcoin in bulk amount becausr if one is temporarily out of servive then you can use another without stop your work like trading ,buying & selling .
since i have only 0.28 btc now but i have only one bitcoin wallet which is official blockchain.info .
since you are newbie so i will suggest you to use coinbase because it is free of transaction charge .

Multiple wallets just depends on what you need to use them for.  Online and smartphone wallets are the most accessible if you are on the go, but nothing has the security of your own wallet.  Online wallets can be subjected to hacks and phones can be physically stolen much more easily than the HD of your computer.

It's not a bad idea to have 2, one as a spending account which is less secure but more easily accessible, and another high security account where you keep large amounts of 'savings'.

for a beginner I suggest having at least 3 wallets:
one wallet on your HDD (paper wallet as an option) as main wallet to store funds, protect it properly
secondary online wallet like blockchain.info or holytransaction -DO NOT keep large sums of money there
and I wonder why XAPO (xapo.com) wallet is mentioned so rarely here?
I suggest you use it as a third wallet,as it has many useful features and sends transactions with a low to no fee at all!
xapo wallet does have some annoying register process, but once you are in you can enjoy one of the most secure online wallets out there
if you are trading actively-you can store some dust at exchanges, just don't use their addresses as a storage

I like your idea that you also invest and that is actually encourage here to grow our money.

Currently I am using three wallets.

1st wallet to receive bitcoins from my sources,
2nd wallet to store bitcoin to cold wallet with higher security and backup.
&
last 3rd wallet to exchange to fiat currency.

Using multiple wallets makes no impacts as each payment can be received in new address or old address also but can be controlled user must have strong security layer to protect BTC within wallet.

For security I am using email, 2fa, ip lock, session lock etc features.

Nah I don't think you need more than one wallet "specially in you case, a newbie", Just download a good wallet "the original if you can handle it or Multibit/Electrum if you can't", People using more than one wallet are mostly doing so because they are enough skilled and it's more convenient to them "Armory being more secure, Electrum fast etc...".

The other one is the one I use in my online transactions like trading and investing. I separated it because the first one is only a sub wallet and I wanted to track the transactions so I use the other one instead in online transactions so that I can see its confirmation and track my expenses.

Maybe because of the volume of BTC I have gathered or because of the complexity in my own opinion of maintaining more than one wallet, I havent seen any reason to go for more than one...

Me, I have more than one wallet because I treat my bitcoins as an investment so in investing we need to know how to diversify our investment and dividing our investment in different wallet is good as it minimize the risk of being hack.

It depends on you bro, you can make a lot of bitcoin address but make sure hat you can manage that all addresses, a lot of people here have x2 or more bitcoin address, I think one address for personal transacts, one address for business transacts.
Depends on user if he want to make more or lots of bitcoin address , if he wants to use it for ponzi scheme then you can create more wallet in one account "called" alternative wallets and if someone request a new wallet it will pop up it always use it for business trasaction you can see it on blockchian.info

I only have one wallet and it's in blockchain simply because I don't know why would you need more than one wallet. People say they keep more than one wallet so in case it gets hacked, not all of the coins will be gone. That just proves how insecure their wallet is. They aren't confident that they password is hard enough to guess.

There is a lot to think about and some very cool and fun ways to go.  I would love to find a Windows Phone app wallet that I liked and was associated with one of the online sites that I use, all in good time
