Because governments don't like it. They don't like it because they can't control the money flow when people use bitcoins. They can control banks, airports, your house... But nobody will notice if a tiny usb stick holds thousands of bitcoins.

because of it no control of government country and not taxation pay to government .
so usually they ban it . also there is privacy through which no one can find how much the user saved btc at his wallet .

Yes in some countries bitcoin is illegal and in some countries there is no specific law made for the regulation of bitcoin.
Those government made bitcoin illegal in their country because they are not able to control this bitcoin currency as bitcoin is decentralised and they cannot track how much bitcoin a person is holding in his/her wallet.

What do you mean by it is illegal?  I am from a third world country but we uses bitcoin.  I do not know if it is legal or illegal all I know is that the bitcoin wallet in our country allows deposit through banks and 711 stores and some cash remittances.  They even ask every person to validate their accounts through Id verification and phone verification.  They deactivated accounts which engage into gambling as they say that it is not registered into some government organization or something like that.

I don't think that Bitcoin is illegal in many countries in the world.
In fact, Bitcoin is still not regulated by the law in many countries in the world.
Governments really adapt very slowly to the new reality and Bitcoin is already here, reality and new future of the money.
Don't worry, nobody can stop progress and Bitcoin will be fully accepted everywhere, soon or later.

Bitcoin is legal because it's not a big deal yet, it's not impacting or imposing upon local fiat currencies, and (most importantly) it has legitimate value in the world!

In the end, the government can't control what I offer you for services you offer me - it's called trading/bartering. Of course it would take more creativity to make the exchange happen, but it could still happen.

Here's a resource on the legality of bitcoin by country: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bitcoin_by_country (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bitcoin_by_country)

governments want to control people so they want to control ongoing cash flow. For that reason, goverments dont want to legitimize bitcoin usage in trades. Bitcoin flow cant be controled offically at this moment but something will be different in the future ..who knows..

Hope more people realize this

Those law makers are changing their minds so much that they might be really light headed. Maybe they could do the same with drugs, ban then unban ban then unban.

What are they doing?

Bitcoin is still young currency and many goverments still don't know much about it. They are thinking that bitcoin can be used for illegal activities or avoid pay taxes. And also goverments are in side of banks, legalization of bitcoin can affect banks negative and goverments no need it.

why bitcoin is still illegal in many countries of world ??? Is there any solid reason behind this ??/
Illegal in many countries? It's a minority. Bitcoin is legal in most countries of the world. You need to go to some countries in the former USSR for bitcoin to be illegal.
Governments are cautious about it in the western world, but it's not illegal. The usual arguments are terrorist, crime, money laundering.

Before all the "get rich quick" guys came to the bitcoin space, it was a very political movement.
You need to go back in time to when bitcoin was first created.

June 2011:
I have become fascinated with Bitcoin since first reading about it a few weeks ago.  It seems to me that a successful, thriving bitcoin currency is very threatening to governments, because it reduces their power to trace transactions, confiscate money, and pay their bills in inflated currency.  Bitcoin takes power from government and puts it firmly back into the hands of the people.  It has a small, but real, chance of becoming one of the most liberating inventions since the Internet itself, and will therefore be detested by governments around the world.  If it is to survive, every effort must be taken to protect it from their attacks.

That was the general view. I'm skeptical if it does reduce a governments power:

Like everybody here saying, the government could not control it and they would not benefit.  But I do not think so, here in our country it is like legal because we can buy or deposit our money through bank and then it will be deposited to our bitcoin wallet and then you can exchange it into bitcoins.  The government still benefit from it through taxes that banks remittance center, those stores that were partner of bitcoin wallet through tax.

Title: Re: Why bitcoins illegal ????

Because the system doesn't yet have a proper mechanism for dealing with it. The fact that Bitcoin is used worldwide makes it harder for individual countries to set up laws to control it. And since countries can't control users outside of their borders, it is easier for them to just ban their own people from using it.

In theory it was not controllable by government. This was several years ago in 2011. In practice people use it to buy products which are taxed by the governments and exchange through banks. In the end a government still benefits from bitcoin and the benefits outweigh the negatives.

It's easy to create a law but a law is obsolete if they cannot enforce it. Usually law makers have zero knowledge of technology.

Bitcoin can't be illegal because most countries, governments or state laws don't even recognize Bitcoin as money, currency or financial assets.
In my country, for example, nobody recognize bitcoin.
Even if I want, there is no way to report earnings from bitcoin to the tax authorities.
I can only report earnings if I sell Bitcoin and exchange to other, ''hard'' currency. :)

Bitcoin was still illegal to some country, because its not recognize by the government constitution of law and they will not allow bitcoin to be a legal currency. Because  in each country has only one recognized currency which represent to every countries identity.. Bitcoin don't have own country identity. Just like peso it represent the Philippines, YEN represent the country of japan. And other currency represents their country. But unfortunately Bitcoin don't have. I think this is one of the reason why some other countries bitcoin is still illegal.

Bitcoin is illegal because the people who say what is legal have expressed that Bitcoin is illegal. But, Bitcoin is NOT unlawful.

Legal people are not any different than other people. In many cases, they are the worst kind of evil people. Make your own legalism if you want. Make your statement that Bitcoin is legal. Get your friends and neighbors to make the statement with you. Make legal Bitcoin strong in your area.

Just one thing. You need to stop partaking of the government. You need to NOT be a citizen of any government that says that Bitcoin is illegal. If you don't, you contradict yourself. If you contradict yourself, you will fail.

Interesting question.
In my opinion, because we are competition to the banks and they don't like us.
Also, government don't like us because of anonymity on Internet.
They can't control Bitcoin, and can't force us to pay taxes, report it as income etc.
Nobody is owner of Bitcoin, and nobody can control bitcoin.
Because of this reason, I don't really think that Bitcoin will be accepted by any official institution in the world.

Bitcoin is illegal in some countries because of some reasons. First of all, The governments don't like it. They see it as a threat against banks and fiat but not that big of a threat for now that's why they leave it alone for now. They also think that bitcoin = drug money many thinks that way because of media saying bad things about bitcoin. Finally, it is illegal in some countries because it tolerates cybercrime since the one using it is anonymous making it easy for him/her to buy drugs etc. on the deepweb that the police don't like.

It also gives users the chance to evade tax because of the anonymity it gives. Because of anonymity too it can be easily used for crimes and illegal transaction thats why they dont like it.

The government is abusing the power of fiat. They don't want people to wake up and know that fact so they ban Bitcoins in their country. That would make people that already knows about Bitcoin to stop talking about it since it's illegal. If he's going to open it as a topic, most people would look at him as criminal or some sort of hackers.

To be honest, even if Bitcoins get illegalized somewhere in this world, people would still be able to use it since the Bitcoin network is decentralized.

I guess, they're reason is if they cannot make money its illegal, since money controls people. and they cannot control how bitcoins works, they dislike how the monetary system works,

Russia is one of the first wants to introduce criminal responsibility for the execution of the cryptocurrency. The ruble has always been called "wooden". No one appreciates that. As soon as you can earn currency, people will do it. Russia's economy is already falling, and in this case will in General collapse.

First of it's very hard for a government to controll the use of Bitcoin so in democatic countries it's almost irrelevant whether it's legal or not. In the non-democratic countries the situation is different though: a neighbor might snitch on you and your place would be searched by the police, your computer confiscated and then even you never used Bitcoins they will "prove" that you were using them and put you in jail.

The other reason might be because they found bitcoin was hard to manage and they don't get what it bitcoin really all about, and the other thing is because in some country, bitcoin is the most payment that is required to buy drugs online to stay anonymously to the public, that's why the government get rid of it before it get worst.

In order for countries to recognize bitcoin currency, you must first enable the government to monitor users and take taxes from them. This is perhaps the best answers.

There is a map in that website, which classifies the legality of Bitcoin by country. But remember that it is not the latest one. For example, although the situation in the US is given as "Permissive", some of the states (such as New York) are actually very hostile to Bitcoin.

The exchanges can't be banned. These are online websites, which can be operated from anywhere in the world (even behind a VPN). If China or Russia bans the exchanges, then they can easily shift their operations to some other country, such as Taiwan.

How about the possibility of banning exchanges ,how would the users cope up with that idea.if a government decides to ban crypto exchanges then they can definitely stop the process and that is a possibility in the future because bitcoin could be seen as a parallel currency which would harm a countries economy.

The exchanges can't be banned. These are online websites, which can be operated from anywhere in the world (even behind a VPN). If China or Russia bans the exchanges, then they can easily shift their operations to some other country, such as Taiwan.
Well, let's start with the fact that China considers Taiwan its territory. As for bitcoin it seems to me that it is the work of the global stock speculators and very soon they will cease to exist.

Experts tracked story addresses the transaction and concluded that the first two phases of network development in the area was dominated by transactions of mining and illegal activities.

there are some country that do accept bitcoin as legal currency in their country and before now there have a means of mining it using their computer maybe with the use of soft as we all know bitcoin is a digital currency.

Bitcoin can be illegal or sometimes not encourage in some countries because they see the digital coin as a threat as it is something they can not control partially or completely. Plus, it can be hard to trace many transactions and implementing taxes can be near impossible not unless you can really be so honest with your dealings online.

Yes, you are asking the right questions. But I believe that cryptocurrency no longer be able to depreciate the reason that the game has already invested a lot of money. Bitcoin now "ensure" these investments and expensive equipment for mining

For example using a means of payment without necessarily identifying the members of the operation, rredstva of crime translating into such transactions to make easier. Also on hand to criminals irreversibility of committed transactions and block any transaction, even if we know exactly what this purse belongs to the perpetrator.

Although Bitcoin transactions are hard to trace, once you convert your coins to fiat it becomes easier for the government to track you (that is, unless you are exchanging for physical cash). So honesty doesn't matter.

It is banned in and deemed illegal in some countries because it is prone to tax evasion, money laundering and it can be used in illegal and illicit activities without being known. Aside from that it is also a threat to banking system and cannot be regulated and controlled by the government.

With these reasons some countries just banned bitcoins also as a means to cmake tax collection efficient and to close any possible gateway for illegal transactions to occur.

Since you made bitcoin transactions, I don't think it would be easier for the government to track you if you exchange it for physical cash. Unless you did illegal activities and someone reported you, that is the time, government will focus on you and will find way to track you.

Yes.. physical cash is difficult to track. But then, in order to exchange your coins for physical cash, you'll be engaging in some form of communication (emails, phone calls.etc). These communications can be tracked.

Perhaps the main reason why bitcoin illegal in some countries because of security problems and bitcoin widely used for negative activities. Many countries declares illegal because it is less secure so it can not be legalized because it would be detrimental. In addition, many countries who were thinking bitcoin as drug dealing, money laundering, etc. It will make people more able freely to crime, so many countries are declares bitcoin illegal. Maybe it was the cause of many countries declares bitcoin illegal, ie because of the trust factor.

Could you define the term illegal income?

IMO, illegal income is profiting from illegal activities such as the sale of banned narcotics and unauthorized firearms. If we earn Bitcoins from legal activities such as trading, then it can't be termed as illegal income.

That is unfortunate, because the usage of Bitcoin can result in a lot of positive things, especially in the third world nations. Remittance is one of the sectors in which Bitcoin can do wonders. Imagine the third world workers paying just 0.1% or 0.2% to send their remittance payments, instead of the usual 10% or 15%.

Governments are made from people and people tend to corrupt. As there will be money and government there will be a constant corruption, manipulation and scamming of society by powers above society.

Bitcoin gives society a freedom from people corruption in government.

And we will never have a government without corruption until money exist.

The best answer is the government is not ready to formalize bitcoin, they still worry that bitcoin could disrupt the circulation of fiat.

Why could disrupt fiat currencies?

Because legalized something must have accurate data and details of its users. If this can't be resolved, majority of people will move to bitcoin, and enthusiasts fiat is much reduced. It would be a national disaster. Anonymity is very taboo for a country, because it means the state can't keep track of all activities.

There are only two options for thgovernment:

- Think hard to mastering bitcoin technology (in collaboration with blockchain / create own crypto technology such as Japanese)

- Don't care about bitcoin

We see that China is still a problem with bitcoin until now.

in some country there are no laws to use of bitcoin transactions and government can't control  it

I think its not just some countries though. Most countries i think are overlooking bitcoin and are not yet at the point where they want to legalize or ban btc. I'm sure governments are awaren of it but i think it not affecting their markets that much thatbit needs a lot of attention
That is the main reason the government can't control bitcoin transaction, they don't still know how to hold those things that is why some countries just banned it. Other countries like here in our country allows bitcoin although not yet legal but they are studying it now on how to legalize this matter. I am glad that my country is open minded with this matter.

Bitcoin illegal only from the state government rules only, proof of Bitcoin could be used in the countries that indeed such rules. Bitcoin is not shaped the same as conventional money is there, therefore no one will be able to stop Bitcoin for use during the country's still no internet connection.
The government with the rules is not wrong to issue a policy like that, maybe they are worried because Bitcoin yet familiar and still many people who still do not know and understand Bitcoin is also a way to use it.
Regulations in some countries is actually not a whole bitcoin use regulations, but the use bitcoin as legal tender. So bitcoin can still be used but is limited and only for certain things in my opinion. And you are right that many government issued a policy that's because bitcoin is still questionable in terms of security and profit. But I'm sure sooner or later bitcoin will begin to attract many countries to start using it.

I doubt that ever country in the world recognizes the cryptocurrency. I don't see any sense in it. In any country there is a national Bank that regulates the monetary policy of the state. Why lose this control?

Government insist to present the bitcoin as they can't get any tax from it unlike in the foreign exchange, they collect tax from the online wallet like paypal, neteller, and etc. As time goes by, bitcoin shall be recoginize as the most reliable transaction method online. Goevernment's abused in giving tax for transaction must be stopped. Bitcoin, will set us free from that, bitcoin should be recognized by all of people.

for some country they are considering bitcoin as illegal because they dont seek research about this crypto currencies. they think that its illegal because it is not yet officially introduced to their country.

Some third world countries have banned Bitcoin. Vietnam is a perfect example. They don't understand the technology behind Bitcoin, and therefore they don't know about the advantages which Bitcoin offers.
You do not even need to be engaged in illegal activities, and if the country or the government conceived to punish for non-payment of tax, the user bitcoin is outlawed and punished. It is illegal bitcoin.

I refuse to pay tax on my Bitcoin holdings. I have checked the website of the Income Tax Department in my country, and Bitcoin is not mentioned anywhere. It is not even given whether Bitcoin must be considered as a currency, or as an investment. Therefore, I am not going to pay the tax.

This could not be illegal should be. Bitcoin is just a virtual money, why we should pay our taxes because of bitcoins. We think that bitcoin is illegal, but no, because bitcoin is a virtual money that created a money. We cannot consider bitcoin as be taxable money. Bitcoin value have a lot of difference on our paper money. Investors invest their altcoin through paper money.

Some people thinks bitcoin is illegal because it is use in buying drugs and connected to black market just simple as that. So we should not follow what they are doing because that is very bad even knowing we have the freedom on how to use our coins which is wrong.

The issue of illegality of bitcoin is mostly out of ignorance to some people especially in countries where government has not taken a position concerning bitcoin backed with a particular law. And the reason why people chose such position is because of not only the negative tings that bitcoin is being used for which no one can do but the fact that they cannot be traced by regulatory agencies which is one step ahead that fiat has gotten.

That's a stupid reasoning. When someone uses a currency to buy something illegal, whose fault is that? The currency's? ;D
It's always the fault of the seller, he procured the illegal goods and offered them for sale. If something is illegal it's the role of the authorities to track the sale and confiscate the goods to take it off the market. What currency is being used is not the problem here, they could even be trading drugs for cinema tickets.

Exactly. Take the trade of illegal drugs for example. Only a very small part is conducted online. More than 90% of the drug trade is done using physical cash. But I have never heard anyone advocating to ban the physical cash, as it encourages drug trade.

We should consider this kind of transaction, what if drug trades transaction will be on its virtual money. Conducting transactions online cannot determine by authorities. We think that, if bitcoin would be legal, banks and local governments cannot conduct investigation or cannot track the trades or the transaction, unless, bitcoin can make that kind of security

We cannot blame local governments, we should not blame them, because they are not aware on bitcoins. We must first introduce to them what is bitcoin, and what are the positive effects of bitcoins. We can still be part of it to promote bitcoins, we seldom acknowledge the fault that we are not promoting bitcoins. If we are collaborating bitcoins, then local governments will know what are the benefits of bitcoins.

Bitcoin has a value. However, in your case, it doesn't have a value only in your country, not in gobally. Hence, you can convert it into fiat any time you want giving it a value. If you want to convert it, just sell it to other people in other country like Nigeria, so that you can be able to convert it into dollar via paypal, neteller or etc. Sooner, it'll be accepted in all countries.

All the problems arise not with bitcoin users, and governments of different countries. And it is primarily on the fact that the authorities have no control over Bitcoin and its users. Therefore, no one gives consent to the legalization of bitcoin.

The thing is that in bitcoin are a lot of money, and the popularity of the temptation to use bitcoin attracts more and more people and businesses. And the result is that the state loses revenue in its budget. This is the two by two.

Never say "never". Because you don't know what holds out in the future.

Also, you can't say that the Bitcoin user-base is insignificant. We are more than one million, and growing steadily (after a brief period of stagnation). Some of the fiat currencies don't have that many users.

Because Governments like to control us like zombies.

The Governments is everywhere.
It is all around us.
Even now, in this room.
You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television.
You can feel it when you go to work... when you go to church... when you pay your taxes.
It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

That you are a slave.
Like everyone else you were born into bondage.
Into a prison that you cannot taste or see or touch.
A prison for your mind.

maybe its because bitcoin is not accepted by many country, i think the other reason is the government can not make profit for using bitcoin and if they want to get profit, they should make regulation for accepting bitcoin and they should make their currencies so they can push people to using their currency too.

Yeah. That's why the states do not like bitcoin. Because they can not get tax from the money earned with bitcoin. Only when they are converted into cash and transferred to the bank account.

But in the future we can use bitcoin without converting it to money. Then they will not be able to follow in any way.

This is just one of the reasons. Another reason is that the government does not control the number of bitcoins in circulation and cannot use the issue to manage the economy of the state. Additionally, bitcoin is a direct competitor to the dollar, and who let it? But there is good news. Until they do not consider bitcoin a currency, the taxes he no need to pay.

why bitcoin is still illegal in many countries of world ??? Is there any solid reason behind this ??/

The prohibition of bitcoins by some states is a problem of those states. Bitcoin is a legal system. States illegally define everything they can not control.
But the bitcoin can not be removed from the ban.

Bitcoin can't be banned. That is the problem. It is not a physical asset, and therefore the government can't prevent its entry or exit from their jurisdiction. Also, unless the coins are converted to fiat, the authorities can't track them.

Yeah. That's why the states do not like bitcoin. Because they can not get tax from the money earned with bitcoin. Only when they are converted into cash and transferred to the bank account.

But in the future we can use bitcoin without converting it to money. Then they will not be able to follow in any way.

But in the future I think that the states will go to a system like bitcoin. They will create a system in which Bitcoin will become centralized and controlled.
Especially the blockchain technology is being examined by the finance sector. States can do something like this because of its fast and secure nature.

Even if you use Bitcoins directly (for supermarket purchases, utility bills, buying gasoline.etc), it can be taxed. The government can just ask the retail chain to impose a surcharge on the Bitcoin payments. So if you are paying with BTC, there will be a 2% or 3% surcharge, and this amount will go to the government as tax.

In any case, the 2-3% is less than to pay the taxes in full. I am sure that the government while turning a blind eye is not the use of bitcoins because the volume of use as not affect the economy. While using bitcoins is profitable only to the exchangers.

Bitcoin is not illegal in countries which it is being recognized. Government's bank is making now a move to start accepting bitcoin as a currency. We know they are interested just for the tax, on the other hand they can also help this to develop for the sake of all sectors and make it successful with their connections.

I disagree with you. In addition to taxes the government is able to manage the monetary policy of the state. This allows you to fight inflation and in time to withdraw from circulation the extra money. In addition, when recession can make the issue. How to do it with bitcoin? No States are not interested in bitcoin even if they would pay taxes.

Tell me what country you live in? If it is not a secret. I have not heard that anywhere in the world to officially recognize bitcoin. It seems to me that he still has no official status currency. What Bank will officially open an account in bitcoin? Only the Internet resources that are not state facilities.

In such countries, there are a variety of taxes. The exchanges have to pay corporate taxes on their profits. The users have to pay VAT on their Bitcoin purchases, and capital gains tax on their profits. The employees of the exchanges have to pay income tax on their salaries, and the company will have to pay labor tax and the social security for the employees.

They can tax when they control their bitcoin earnings. For example, a supermarket has to mention how much it sells. The arrival price of the products and the selling prices of the products are certain. He has to show his earning correctly. It has to show how much sales are done with bitcoin.
When all this information is given, he will have to pay the necessary taxes.

So someone who opens a business has to pay his tax.

Yeah i think there are already some countries in asia that's looking into and making studies on how to make bitcoin beneficial both to the government and its citizens. I've read that in the philippines, the central bank there is already finding ways to legalize bitcoin. I think we're niw in an age when digital currency would be introduced and more country would implement its use, nit just bitcoin but digital currency in general. We may have more people engaging in trading alt coins as well as investing bitcoin for long term. Btc may be illegal in some countries but as more and more people are using it, these countries may have to give in and legalize bitcoin

If bitcoin will be used in unlawful transactions, the major governments will be forced to either make all for the ban.

If a majority of the coins are used for illegal transactions, then I will agree. But if just 1% or 2% of the total coins in circulation are used for illegal purposes, will you support the ban on bitcoin? It is not fair.

Some logic in those words is still there. The fact is that if the authorities still decide to make bitcoin legal, it will happen only when it finds the ability to control all financial transactions and that all users report their income and taxes paid. Therefore, if the users agree on legalization, we should be ready to control.

It is good to let the government decide whether they can use the bitcoin or not. We should let them first use the bitcoins, because we cannot use them illegally. We cannot assure that bitcoin will last because it includes money, we know how important the bitcoin is. Government must implement bitcoin first, before we gonna buy or we gonna use bitcoins. Instead of using bitcoin, we should know what will be the advantages and disadvantages of it.

The governments (especially those in the third world) don't know much about the advantages of Bitcoin. What little information they get is from the highly biased mainstream media. It is our responsibility to educate these people about Bitcoin.

It is used on some illegal activities and the Government do not know anything about it because they cant track the transactions of Bitcoin. Although some country still accept bitcoin without thinking this.
If you think of it, Bitcoin really favor the users, than the Government. Bitcoin is free and you can really do anything with it, that is freedom for you, though that is the reason why some government are minimizing the use of these digital currencies.

Bitcoin does not have a central government but everything is transparent when it comes to bitcoin as you can check each and every transaction in the blockchain. So it is basically not a untraceable currency like you think it is.Why government are not approving is a different debate altogether as they might be learning about it.

While not illegal here the states I do notice that even recent media reports about Bitcoin talk about it being used for illegal purposes.  Lately this seems to be the news :

Bitcoin hit a new record high
Bitcoin is a digital currency that can be used for anonymous drug purchasing.

Forget all the regular day to day stuff the bulk of bitcoin transactions account for, let's focus on the few instances of bad.

Bitcoin may not be 100% anonymous, but it is quite difficult to trace the transactions back to a particular individual. I am not saying that it is not possible (for example a few users traced back the Sheep Marketplace thief), but it takes a lot of effort and time.

Why is anything illegal? Normally because the government has made a law that should in principle protect the citizens or the stability of the society that they have been trusted to govern.  Moving massive economic value out of the country, has a destabilizing effect on the economy, at least in theory. And bitcoin is considered one such threat.

I think that buying illegal goods with the help of bitcoin, is not a reason to prohibit crypto currency. Drugs and dollars are buying, but the dollar today is very well in the currency market.
