Title: Silk Road
Post by: optimex on June 13, 2011, 03:01:28 AM
I want to buy a Silk Road marketplace account, but I can't because I can't PM people...

I would stay away from Silk Road.  Sounds lile a really bad idea.
My 2 cents.

There are some members who've offered it in the marketplace.

Couple members of the Senate in Washington have discussed legal issues regarding the silk road to the attorney general's office. I'd say it's about time to step away.

They don't even know which country it operates in.

i wonder how they want to take it down. they (maybe) can van some traders/customers. but the marketplace itself is kinda untouchable, right?

I would just like to know when it goes back up. Regardless of your view of what they're doing, they supplied a large demand for BTC.

Actually as of the moment is it still closed on my end. Luckily made an account shortly before the close.

Title: Re: Silk Road, how to join
Post by: yer blues on June 14, 2011, 05:48:19 PM
I tried joining Silk Road after downloading Tor Browser, but the site seems to be avoiding new members. Why is that? Some posts (on the newbies) say that Silk Road reopened, others say there are users selling their user names/passwords. I wasn't able to join in just now, and have no clue on how to buy a "pass" to Silk Road, so could really use some help!
Thanks a lot!
;)

How can they not be able to track where it's shipping from? Just look at the return address hurp durp

I suspect that depending on geography, GPS-referenced dead drops via couriers could be feasible (basically courier arrives at inconspicuous point A, drops and disguises package, records GPS coordinates and walks away, then the coordinates as recorded by courier are sent to customer along with a description of area with package, the client goes to the area and, using his GPS navigator, finds the package. BINGO  ;D )

Silk Road will always be used to show how evil Bitcoin is. The less we talk about it on the forum, the better.

It's interesting to think about what options AG's and other authorities have to take down Silk Road.

It seems that the combination of Tor + Bitcoin makes it impossible to do anything more than stage sting operations, by having agents use the site to catch individual buyers or sellers. Tor makes it impossible to find anyone without doing that, even if the authorities got hold of the operators of Silk Road. Bitcoin makes it impossible for the seizure of any one person's computer - even an admin - to lead to the discovery of anyone else.

What else would they use? An address of some random guy's house?

Umm..YEH

PO Box, Temporary Address, Virtual Office, friends house, neighbors. Anything can be obtained with a fake ID or no ID at all.

Most sellers dont even use real address for the return address anyways

Wonder how much the sites closure would hurt the bitcoin market if/when it does happen (assuming bitcoins still have value then)

Ofcourse, but all of SR's transactions are via bitcoins

it's probably will still a significant portion of all buying/selling once the people speculating exit the market

IMHO Silk Road is still playing an important role in holding up the value of BTC, at least at this time. The conversion from $ to BTC is a minor hassle for people looking to buy that kind of stuff. Unfortunately it still is a big hassle as far as buying legit merchandise from the few merchants who currently accept BTC.

The Silk Road is not completely immune to being shut down. Hidden services on tor may be located in a couple of different ways.
For example, it's pretty likely that it's running on a tor relay, in order to give reason for all of the tor traffic (otherwise that would be suspicious to it's ISP), so you could take down relays (maybe 5seconds at a time - pretty unnoticeable), until the hidden service is no longer accessible from several locations, at which point you know that the relay you just took down was pretty close in the tor network to to the actual service, allowing you to narrow down the possibilities pretty greatly.

However, if the operator of the silk road is smart, he's paying for hosting somewhere where US authorities have little control, using Bitcoin, and only accessing the hosting over the tor network, and downloading a backup of the database to some other safe location regularly. If he's doing this, even locating the physical machine that its running on wouldn't allow them to shut the service down for more than a day or so, which is almost nothing.

Replacement sites are already popping up...if they can find  a way to transfer rep, also, then sellers can survive...that's the real issue to those that deal in this stuff: finding a way to stay mobile...Tor is a beginning...

Depends on a trader. It's a MARKET not a shop.

Supposedly they are moving to a bigger better server and then registration will be open again. Check the Silk Road thread elsewhere on this forum.

D: I can't stand this. Someone I know put their bitcoins in silkroad, but can't get them now. He's flipping because he's ready to sell them since he thinks it's about to drop big.

Market seems to fluctuate with Silk road from what I've seen, I wont be surprised if we saw a little spike in price once it comes back up and the demand is there. For your friends sake I hope it comes back up before any drop.

This is why you should only store a few coins in there at a time.  The safest place for bitcoins is in your wallet.

you have got to be seriously stoopid to send drugs via US mail.

you might get away with it a few times, but once you get caught its 20 years of federal ass rape prison for you.

have fun.

Anytime you send something through the mail it may get caught. Especially international orders as customs takes a closer look then the regular post office. But most the time if the size is reasonable for personal use then they will just confiscate it. Also they may or may not send a letter of seizure. If you get said letter do not reply to it just toss it and take it as a loss.
