Title: Do you tell in public that you use bitcoin?
Post by: virtualx on September 12, 2016, 11:37:56 PM
Is Bitcoin still considered shady in the public opinion or government opinion?

From 2011:
It's not a secret CIA dudes read this forum. I tried for long time to keep my nationality obscured but eventually I've blown it.

I've also found out that Romanian Intelligence Service keeps noting on Romanians that use Bitcoin. Not for the security of the state but for personal reasons. Please note that in Romania, a country with 22.000.000 people there are officially 200.000 mobile phone taps.

I think people like us speaking up about cryptocurrencies in general (don't have to necessarily mention Bitcoin if you are just explaining the concept), will greatly help the widespread adoption of the concept.

Of course, I often suggest people to use btc whenever we get into that kind of business talk and also when talking about earning some nice pocket money. Why would I keep quiet about it?

i don't see a problem to tell anyone that i have bitcoin in my possession and many family members are already aware of it... it isn't a drug or something illegal to hide  ;)

It depends on the context of the conversation and who its with..

But a random stranger? I rather just not, but sometimes it slips and usually ends up them getting them to know wanting to more about it?

I just say go google it and then they hit me back up cause people still are very new to it.

Only to my friend and my family.  They asked me how I have money because I have no job and then I told them about signature campaign and bitcoin.  They were all amazed and wonder how could it happen.  When I showed it to them they were like okay it is only for people with brains. ;D  They love the idea but would not want to try it as they sees it as complicated.

It's not considered shady, it's just got stereotypes associating it with nerds, Libertarians, or both.

Of course, I do. Why shouldn't I? There's nothing to be ashamed of.  Then, all my friends know I'm somewhat special with a different lifestyle and political beliefs, so BTC fits me quite well.

Sometimes I'm telling to my friends that I use bitcoin. I'm trying to explain them how it works, why bitcoin is good. But mostly are not interested in bitcoin. And mostly mid-age people hardly can understand what is bitcoin and think that it's something shady.

Same here, I'm often mentioning about bitcoin around my friends and family, don't see a reason why I should hide this fact. Most of them are truly interested in the subject, so I take
this opportunity and explain as simple and attractive as I can, what bitcoins are and how to collect it. Often a good conversation starter, because in general people are hungry of new and innovative technology.

Actually I don't. Because in the first place I'm not the type of person that will just tell someone what I'm doing in my life, I won't tell someone until they asked me and it depends if I trust them enough or not. But most of the person don't know about the bitcoin so that's why I don't tell it on public because if I do there are gonna be a lot of explanations that's gonna happen.

Why not? it isn't illegal and is now being adopted quite a bit, look at the recent Circle Pay - Apple collaboration as an example, maybe back in the day when all you heard relating to bitcoin was illegal activities etc it would be a bit hush hush to talk about bitcoin.

Now we have banks using the blockchain and it is overall looking a lot more positive for bitcoin, the same with cash and any other form of currency there will always be the bad bunch but the good usually always outweighs the bad.

I got your point there ,im also that kind of person when it comes on secret doings .even my earnings i won't tell on them .i am just simply doing what i do . But when they ask me what is that or how to earn with that i will teach them especially my family members first .also i won't spoon feed on them if they ask i will tell them to make some research first .i am mad answering every details ex what is blockchain wallet ,satoshi, btc ,bitcoins something like that basic to know about bitcoins.

Not to the public like people you did not know.  But I do tell it to my friends and always telling it to my special someone and to my family.  They will most likely to believe you and listen to you rather than random persons.  I tell them how I earn extra profit and how does it work. They just listen and would ask question but not will try to do it on their own.

I think it's best not to tell anyone about your money. People are assholes. I just read a story of a 70 year old man who was held at gunpoint by criminals who knocked on his door, demanding the key for his safe. Stupid criminals, because it narrows it down to people who know the 70 year old guy, and that he has a safe. But the point is, if you have a safe, and a criminal friend just happens to see as they walk by, then you instantly become a target, even if you're just using a safe to hide your Playboys. So I keep quiet.

There's no reason for me to tell people in public that I'm using Bitcoin and there's also no reason for me not to. Yes, I tell people that I'm using Bitcoin only when we come across in a conversation where we talk about how we earn money. I don't tell it publicly in a manner like yelling, "Hey, everyone! I'm using Bitcoins!!" because that'd be awkward. I don't think using Bitcoin or earning money through Bitcoin is a shady activity although most people ask me if it's really legal.

Yes, but mostly people don't understand what I'm talking about or they just don't care.
It seems people have attitude: ''show me the money'' and after that they will start to believe that Bitcoin is something special and unique.
In fact, most of this people are even afraid to use their credit cards and buy something online, or afraid to change their life.
It's sad but it seems Bitcoin is not for everybody.

Make them realize that government and the banks won't have any idea that they are transacting (in most cases), and ask your question again.

I do not tell to anyone, why? because in my country, bicoin do not have much use in real life, at least for many people who do not have money to afford to lose, in my case is different, I will give an example, if I want to buy $20 in bitcoin, I deposit $20 on Payza. reaching $19 in Payza. then i use the exchange (X) then use another processor (Y) and the processor (Y) send $14 in bitcoin to my blockchain account.

$50 is minimum wage in my country and I doubt that those who earn minimum wage will want to spend your money buying bitcoin, it is true that has many rich people, but these people do not want something complicated, so do not see the need to tell them about bitcoin.

Bitcoin is for people who have money, it's sad what I'm saying, but it's true, is a technology that not this within the reach of the very poor,

to have notion, for me to use bitcoin in my country, I must pay card of Neteller which costs $ 68 to send by DHL ... of course for me would not be a problem, but for many people this is a problem.

i never tell about my financial condition because I'm afraid of robbers. here if you say you have money, probably vain to kidnap you and if you do not give the ransom money, they will kill you,

I just don't tell public that I use bitcoin unless people ask me if I use bitcoin or not. Well when friends ask me I tell them I use bitcoin but I don't tell just anyone that I use bitcoin since they don't need to know that I use bitcoin and many people don't now about bitcoin yet. If I tell them I use bitcoin, Ill have to answer a lot of questions and Ill have a hard time answering it all I think.

Not really.
Why?
Because people are not interesting and don't want to listen.
If I try to explain to hem that Bitcoin can be solution for their financial problems and, in the long term, can help them if they join now, they just laugh.
I just give up.
I talk about Bitcoin now only online, in the groups, forums and chat with other bTC users.
It's waste of time try to talk about Bitcoin in the public.
It's my experience.

It depends on the people I'm with. I try to share my knowledge about Bitcoin and try to make it more popular among my friends also by telling them how I use it in my everyday life. But I don't speak about this with people at work because I know majority of them don't support the Bitcoin and I don't trust them.

Author Charles Dickens' classic, A Tale of Two Cities, begins this way: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness ... ."

According to one stock market analytical firm, GMO, today's market behavior resembles Dickens' book, which was published in 1859 and was set during the time of the French Revolution some seven decades earlier.

As the firm noted, in recent days much of the investing and financial world was focused on a meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, attended by Federal Reserve chairperson Janet Yellen. But GMO analysts were watching other things and events happening in the market.

In August, the firm noted in its monthly report – reproduced in part by Zero Hedge – that Shiller P/E, a respected metric for measuring U.S. equities valuation, surpassed 27. Given that normally its range is somewhere slightly above 16, it appears that valuations are looking a bit larger than they should be.

What's more, GMO noted, the last time the Shiller P/E was above 27 was in October 2007, "and we all know how that movie ended," the GMO report said.

'A tale of mediocrity, at best'

And though no one at the analytical firm is saying that the nation and the world are set to experience another Great Recession and near-meltdown of the global economic order – and nothing is written in stone saying that stocks are not allowed to become more expensive – "we continue to maintain our bias against U.S. stocks," the firm said in its report.

At the same time, the firm said, it was tracking a widening disconnect between fundamentals of the U.S. economy, corporate America and their stocks. "It really is a tale of two cities," the analytics firms said, "one of mediocre fundamentals versus a meteoric rise in markets."

In assembling some relevant metrics pertaining to the overall health of the economy and some top-line/bottom-line figures from the S&P 500 index, the firm looked at gross domestic product growth, productivity and household income, in addition to some others like revenue and earnings for U.S. stocks, just to round out the assessment.

"It is a tale of mediocrity, at best," the firm wrote in its report.

After that, analysts contrasted those metrics with actual market returns of the S&P 500 Index spanning the past five years. "Truly meteoric," the firm wrote, adding this caveat: "As an aside, we at GMO have always been leery of drawing too many investment conclusions from staring at economic data–we are more valuation-oriented, after all–but even we are struck by the divergence."

No, actually havent told anyone yet that im using bitcoin even my family. They only know that im doing gambling online but they dont know that im using btc to be able to play.

I also didn't tell my family that I make money with bitcoin because they will not give me money anymore if I say I can make money now haha. I just tell some friends because even I tell people, it's a little bit difficult to explain bitcoin to them. in the other hand, I'm just tired of telling people.

I work with computers, so most people at work at least know what Bitcoin is.
I've been talking with some people recently about Blockchain technology,
because I believe it will be very big in the future.
If you can invest in the right startup, you stand to make a lot of money. One of these blockchain startups is going to be the next Microsoft/ Google.
(Or at least get bought by one of those companies lol.)

It is a hard thing to explain to the normal person. It also is not something in my life that come up at all beside to the few people that come over and see a wallet or an exchange or something on my browser's.
Bitcoin /blockchain/cryptocoins are a very hard thing to explain to most people

Doesn't have to be, but when I try expolaining btc to someone who did never hear of it, I never explain blockchain or the technology behind it, in a very small details, I try to keep it wide for the first time.

It's really hard to explain when you share it to public and to your family and friends. But when they found out how awesome and convenient bitcoins are, surely they won't hesitate to know more about this. Yes it does really takes time for a person to understand bitcoin system but eventually they will. There just like us dying of curiosity and now playing our part in the world of bitcoin.

Hahaha. I experience this matter when i tell it to my 4 friends i use my proofs on eaening btc and told them that signature campaign is the least risk instead of unvesting or buying bitcoins. Then same way after they register at first asking about 360 seconds before replying and when they ask can i join sign campaign now ? After the day i said you need to rank up about 2-4 months first and need to know more about forum not just posting they backout .

I think they dont wanna wait time they want instant money instant earning even i am a hrad time earner about 4 months above ..well we  cannot blame them about that.

Sincerely, as much as possible that I want to tell people about my exposure to bitcoin even though little as it may I find it difficult because of the environment here as the acceptance is not really deep and the perception of people about anything that is not FIAT is assume to be illegal or belongs to the underworld so, I am in  a fix so what I do is to wait for someone to be curious and then use the avenue to give proper orientation and exposure as necessary.

yeah that's what we bitcoin users are doing here as well. we show people what we're doing and then we let them be the one to ask. then that's when we try to inform them about bitcoin. most people that i know here are not aware of bitcoin yet so i try to explain everything to them. it would be beneficial for us anyway once more and more people are using bitcoin

I do speak about bitcoins in public with my friends, But the reaction i get is usually, why are you doing illegal business? you may end up in jail.

Their biggest question and am not able to convince them just by talking is, How can a currency exist without any company, group or board controlling it?. Mostly i will not try to explain them more, I'll just direct them to bitcoin.org or some exchange and sometimes to a page about mining.

Nowadays i just don't care what they think and doesn't bother to explain to them.

That was the problem there they are not openminded they not even interested on your earnings i think thats the reason but sooner they will ask you again when bitcoins are popularly known and they realize that they will listen to you.
As of now the only way to do is ignore whatever they said. They will only ask and ask you but lastly they don't even care even you already answered their questions.

Not really.
In fact, many people around me are scared even to try Internet banking or to use Internet to order or pay something :)
People are also very skeptic about Internet.
I think, if I will ask people around me, if they ever heard about Bitcoin, 90-95 % will answer no.
If I will try to explain them benefits of Bitcoin, they will not listen.
So, I don't intent to waste my time and energy on it.
If somebody ask me about Bitcoin, I will explain but otherwise, I will not loose my time on it.

No, I don't for now because I am still waiting for the time when I earn enough bitcoin and show to them that it's worth it. My friends don't even know about it and I will only tell them if I will begin to cash out and then show to them that I have a sideline online that can possibly help me in achieving my financial goals. That's why I am accumulating as much bitcoin as possible and then add it to my trading capital because I view it as my best way to earn bitcoin. Though I can earn bitcoin through signature campaign, it's not just enough because a month of signature campaign can be earned in just one trade if the timing is right.

Yup, whenever bitcoin is the topic of conversation I proudly present myself as a bitcoin enthusiastic. But most of the general public here still don't know about or don't care about bitcoin. Bitcoin is sometimes getting a news coverage but is still ignored. I've tried to explained my family what bitcoin is, how is it obtained and how it is changing the world. It was not an easy task. But I think I was successful in doing that but I can't do that for other people.

I do not hide my use of Bitcoin and try to endorse it to anyone that listens. I believe that this crypto currency has the ability to be the future of money as we know it, and hope that its popularity continues to grow and more people become involved in Bitcoin.

Well as long as you live in a country where bitcoin isnt banned, then why not? As long as you dont go around preaching and trying to shove the btc into peoples head. :D

I introduced bitcoins to people around me and also to my friends and family but most of them were not interested in knowing it or putting their money into it as they feel that bitcoin will not survive in long run.

In my country there are no problems with using bitcoins. Just people do not really want to use it. Try to sell a car for bitcoins.

Just the same here in our country but few people only knew about it.  I once told my family about it and they were amaze about bitcoin.  They could not believe about it that you can earn real money through it.  But because of its compexity and it seems complicated, they do not want to try it.  They cannot comprehend how you are able tobearn through it.

Why wouldn't we? We need Bitcoin to become popular because it'd be even in our advantage. The price would rise a lot because the more people are coming, the more Bitcoin is wanted so we need a higher price. Also it'd be in our advantage because we would have more places and POIs where we can pay with Bitcoin at. I'm talking to others about Bitcoin because it's even in my own interest.

I don't tell it in public because in my opinion it is waste my time and it needs place and many people for explaining about bitcoins and cryptos coins, i just told to my friends personal, it is more comfort than explaining about bitcoins on many people.

not in public but mostly to my friends although i am not going to hide it as i have also draw bitcoin logo on my bike and i think that is the most exp loser of bitcoin in public and most of the time people ask me about that and then i use to tell me a detail story of bitcoin and they really appreciate it and show interest to start it.
That was great ,i am sure the person who ask dont heard any news about bitcoin they totally innocent in the first place ,I will be gald if one of those will do bitcoins and continue because most of my friends out of only starts on first time then a weeks after they will stop and say it is so hard to earn bitcoins.

yes of course...  I do..

what's wrong with BTC? Why shouldn't I tell about the BTC?

Instead of hiding about BTC, I ENCOURAGE my friends and make them understand how important the bitcoin for daily life is!

When the opportunity arises I tell people about Bitcoin.  I also tell them about other cryptocurrencies.  Funny how suddenly they ask how come I am knowledgeable about these things.  They are usually suspicious at first - because for them money is something they can touch and count.
But I show them for example a credit card and tell them.. is this money? They say yes. But I tell them.. but this is only plastic card... but you know the value of this card because you know how it works.

I tell them you use credit card with the money you do not have , to buy things you do not need, to impress people you do not like.
Then i tell them about BITCOIN.. it is real currency.  Just because you dont understand it right now - does not make it unreal.

I like showing my friends how bitcoin works and how to earn coming from this great investment. Knowing how they can possibly earn and how big it can be that way i gather interest from them.

Personally I dont and its due to the low popularity of Bitcoin over here and also the perception of people around in that they believe anything not sanctioned of given approval by government, is definitely illegal.

Another factor is the anonymity of Bitcoin which does not give room for any form of identification so my neighbor could be involved in Bitcoin, and I wont know this and many other factors limits my ability to say it boldly about Bitcoin but I have friends that are involved too so we just discussed about it...

No I dont tell because I made it secret because its extra income. I do not want allow some people to know my extra opportunity in life haha. I just dont want it. Maybe I guess I am shy to tell to my friends about this.

this is not because you are shy but you are jealous that your relatives or friends will earn as much as you earn and you want to shine in front of them showing off  . Just share the light and be happy rather than having a shallow mind

Yup i always tell to my friends or in public that i am using bitcoin why to hide the real ? When you are really working it to the good thing bitcoin is not bad for me as long as you are earning it from legal ways i believed that bitcoin will be understandable to those people who really confused about it. Wait for the right time.

Since when I was talking about Bitcoin in public I mostly was seeing faces full of surprise or, what was even worse, faces telling me that they don't care just with their eyes, I almost have stopped mentioning BTC in public. But when I hear someone is talking about it of course I'm joining to the conversation with pleasure.

No, I do not tell anyone about this. Rather, I have no one asks about it. But if someone is interested, I certainly will tell about cryptocurrency and how to use it

I do not hide from anyone that I use Bitcoin. Many people think that it is illegal. But I do care about their opinion, because I know that Bitcoin is a very promising cryptocurrency

I think another good question to ask with this one is: what country do you live in?
It is easier for me as an American to openly use cryptocurrencies, and also for me to have the expectation that it remains legal to do so.
There may be some on here who take a higher risk.
