Title: How old is your main computer?
Post by: dx5 on September 24, 2016, 06:11:12 PM
I built my main computer all the way back in 2011. I can't believe it's been that long. And I just don't see any reason to upgrade. We have sort of reach a point where for most people, the benefits aren't going to be that great for the money spent. Being that this is a Bitcoin forum, and people here mine, etc. How often does the average person here upgrade their computer?

If you want the best stuff you gotta upgrade in a 1 or 2 year cycle.

Yes, but I have an i7 3770k, with 16GB of ram, an SSD and I don't mine. The computer runs beyond smoothly. It doesn't seem like it would be worth upgrading. I wouldn't be surprised, since I don't play games anymore, if I'm still using this computer in ten years.

I did have a pair of r9 290x back when I used to mine.

My main computer is 2 years old. I used my previous computer for 7 years, until the graphics card could not keep up with modern software.
It is not fast, but runs smooth with SSD.

One and a half.

I used my old laptop more than 5 years, so i guess 5 years is their lifespan. I don't do heavy stuff on my computer and rarely play games so i don't replace my computer in every 2 years like most people here.

Couldn't you just upgrade your GPU?

my computer is old enough to be thrown away out of the window. but i kept using it, its slower to kept using windows system still and so i installed lightweight linux system such as mint and so it works well now.  it a waste to throw it as it still work so its good. after all i just use it for office works.

That used to be me, always looking to upgrade, but most changing graphics cards CPU and RAM, that was the best to do imo these days its out of the question.

I am now stuck with a five year old computer, that has seen better days, graphics are rubbish now, failure imminent green tints all over.

Believe it or not but this is my main computer. IBMX41, it was manufactured in 2006... so, yes it has 10 years and what a decade it was! 10 freaking years of constant working nearly 20/7 and its still kicking. Boots up very fast with lightweight Unix OS, some bigger and heavier websites can slow it down...no miracles :-\  it uses only 18W ;D This stock foto is not much different than my x41, looks like it was bought last month. They dont make them any more like that.

Haha. My computer is as old as the mammoth. All will not be updated. Well, it is already ten years exactly.

If your computer is running slower on Windows, when in the past it didn't, then check your startup programs, pressing CTRl+Shift+ESC.

Or do a clean install.

The hardware is still the same as the day it was bought.

Right now as you are asking, I don't exactly know nor care about it's age. Bought a new casing, still stuck on migrating the old parts into a fresh hull.

The plan is about stuffing the old case with some cheap spare parts to puff it up as a secondary, for boring or long durance tasks.

I just looked at the specs. Omg, old. I mean, can modern browser run smoothly on it?

I don't and had spent a few grand on one and sold it to a family member for chump change.
I had two more older ones that still work fine..

Since gaming died at GTA:SA
I have had no interest ever since in any of that crap anymore.
Make HL3 or fuck off !

So..

I am running a machine for Windows Media Center on Win7 + Web Browsing basically.
AMD Phenom X4 9950 "BE"
On an old AM2+ board.. a lame piece of crap.

Works perfectly fine.. although if i need to do a video encode etc it will obviously take a million years LOL

..what ever works for your needs ;)

Mine is three years old. However, when I built it I did so that it will take over 6 years until I will need to upgrade it. Right now I'm having absolutely no problem with it, I can run anything anytime without errors.

I bought another 512 memory and 80 harkdisk. I'm using  it until now. I wish to buy another pc but I don't cash at the moment.

If it aint broke, don't fix it is my motto.  My 2001 Win XP Pro box lasted more than a dozen years, it was actually the Mother Board that finally died.  I never had the blue screen of death - ever - not once.

I've replaced it with an acer Win XP Home Edition (second hand) - swapped out the Ram for the maximum (which would have cost a small fortune new) and added a graphics card.

Hasn't missed a beat in the last three years.

It is not fast, but runs smooth with SSD.

Couldn't you just upgrade your GPU?
I could have done that. It was onboard, and I could have added a new GPU. But for a 7 (now 9) year old AMD dual core it was not worth it. And I wanted a modern quiet computer.

I find that I don't want to buy brand new desktops anymore. I might consider older Xeon powered workstations or servers. They are cheap now, you only need to get new SSDs or new HDDs for storage.

My 5 year old rack server has 48 GB RAM, and I'll probably upgrade it to 72 GB. Dual Quad Core with Hyperthreading, so effectively 16 cores. You can buy these for $500 or less.

Well, in parts were bought in different years.

My I7-3770k 10/20/2014.
My asrock z75 with gskill ram bought in 5/13/2012.
I bought my i3-2100 from here at bitcointalk.org around same time I bought my board.
Bought one 840 pro in 4/28/2014 and the other 840 pro in 2015 or so.
ASUS Xonar D1 soundcard in 9/1/2014.
my XB240H in 9/2/2015 same date for my MSI GeForce GTX 960.
And for my corsair 750d, I forget when and where I bought it.
The cooling system shit I forget.

You maybe surprised to learn that I'm currently using an IBM Model M keyboard, dated 1994.

Why am I still using a keyboard 22 years old? Simple. It's the best keyboard ever made. Noisy and built like a tank.
And with the added bonus that is doesn't have that silly "Windows" key in the lower left, which grinds my gears.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_M_keyboard

Edit: The rest of my setup is a modern system.

I do have a fancy newer one but i'm not gonna make much use of that unless i'm traveling. the old one works perfectly still and does everything I need as I've never gamed on it. the days of having to upgrade all the time are over. same goes for phones apart from one upmanship.

I agree 90% of the time.
Unless you are compiling code or a video etc it often make little difference really.

What it will boil down to more is mult-tasking.

For my desktop and my Android Motorola phone it's about just doing less at once.
vs buying newer hardware to do more at once.

I use a AMD Phenom X4 9950 BE edition CPU on a shit motherboard.
But when i set it up a year ago i had to decide which to go with.. that one or my other old PC
I have a Core2Duo E7500 Wolfdale that overclocks like a beast on air ..4ghz with stock cooler LOL
BUT ! ..it's a dual core and the AMD i am typing on now is slower speed wise but a quad.
So the extra two cores although slower has an effect of being faster.. when it's not technically.

I also use a huge CPU fan that sticks out of my case so much i can't get the side cover on.
I think it's the Cooler Master EVO 212 with adapter to go on pretty much any socket.. old + new.
I had bought it from Newegg as a back up in case the water cooler (Corsair H100i) failed on the "good" PC.
I had an Intel 4770k Haswell i bought from Newegg $360+ TAX/SH with a sweet gaming MSI board.
I went all out on it and got a bad ass SSD and then two 1tb WD black HDD's etc
Weirdest of all was the cube case from Cooler Master with 2 levels on it.
I got this case below from Newegg for like 80 buck i think.. (+ tax etc CAN$)

Cooler Master HAF XB EVO (mine had the giant 120mm case fan on top i had to buy separately)
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51vaCLX7rHL._SX355_.jpg

But i sold it to a family member for a super cheap price because they expressed interest in it and i had my fun with it.
If it was not family i prob would have kept it..
So i had to downgrade to a either of the 2 way older PC's ..which was not that big a deal actually.

I advocate getting your money's worth out of PC parts.
I have been swapping mobo's out of a nice silver case i have with front LED's and a side window with a black light since 2003.. since it's a full size large roomy ATX case i can just keep shoveling in new parts :)

What is more fun though is modding !
It can be more gratifying hobbling shit together than buying stuff off the shelf.

I recently bought an Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 3.33Ghz for $16 on eBay. Not sure if it's compatible with the motherboard you had, but if so you could upgrade it. If you still have the old motherboard.

My main computer is 1 year old. Got it in my USA trip, since everwhere outside there you have a lot of fees, ends up being almost twice as expensive so I decided to wait until I got there to do so

What's the problem with it? Perhaps you can still fix it. Might just have to change a component.

Are there any benefits in doing that. It's not dangerous. It's not a bad idea, since if you can close it off completely the components won't get dirt filled. Does it cool it well?

The 2nd link i posted has a good FAQ.
It's not too good for overclocking but yeah it does cool well.

This is old though i seen guys doing it back in 2003 roughly.

I've seen a working TV immersed in liquid CFC to demonstrate it's inert properties.  Isn't there a paste or gum that you can use to remove hard to remove fluff and dirt from hard to reach places on motherboards and cards?

I built my main computer all the way back in 2011. I can't believe it's been that long. And I just don't see any reason to upgrade. We have sort of reach a point where for most people, the benefits aren't going to be that great for the money spent. Being that this is a Bitcoin forum, and people here mine, etc. How often does the average person here upgrade their computer?

Well my computer is 2 year old longer. After all this computer is currently working and it is well performed because the specification is updated in the trending computer now a days. I just lucky that i knew about computer in this modern period because the cost of computer is not higher as usual.

The laptop i use the most frequent is my workpc. It's currently 2 years old and i get a new one every 4 years....
Runs windows 7 pro, i5, 8 Gb ram, 256 Gb SSD

At home, i use an 7 or 8 years old laptop, it's still 32 bit, 5400 rpm hd. I've installed openSuse on it, since this distro still builds their binaries for both 32 and 64 bit at the same time, so i get regular updates.

When i need some more power, i use my wife's laptop, it's also an i5 with SSD, but it only has 2 Gb ram. It runs debian.

Its very old. I have also the same laptop. But i cant use it because some parts of it are missing. Tge specs of mine: 258 mb of ram and 100gb of hdd. I dont know the others. But you should be careful with the mouse because its just a nipple that made of rubber and tear so easy. Its better to use usb mouse than the mouse itself.

I am proud with it and I hope it will rest for a few more years until new technologies will come and take it over. I'm planning to buy some new components soon (a video card), but I need to get my money first. :)

Had this computer since late 2012, I need to upgrade the graphic card and it will be good as new in my opinion.
The specs are:
CPU: Intel i7 3930k (This CPU still amazes me to this day, the hexagon design is top quality, no overheating issues and i've not been able to throw anything at my CPU that would cause it to halt or have difficulities, excluding benchmarking enviroments, a true beast.
RAM: I started with 8GB ram 2133mhz, upgraded it to 16gb ram 1333MHZ because my 4x2 sticks were causing me booting issues for some reason.
GPU: I'm still using that old GTX 680 GPU, I may upgrade it soon for The Witcher 3.

Overall i'm still satisfied with how it performs, except for the graphic card, I may just upgrade the graphic card only, unlike my older computers whom I upgraded multiple pieces.

Rather funny thing is my firefox seems to struggle a lot more in my wearing-out SSD, than from my RAM or CPU.

Its 8 years already, but some parts have been replaced. I have changed the disk from SATA to SSD but currently im using only 1 disk.
Rest is old, but my graphic card is getting fucked, some strange "artifacts" are going on the screen sometimes :(

I owned 1 desktop computer with minor specifications on it. It has an i3 processor and now still kicking for 5 years. It was already the 2nd time I changed the motherboard because it got burned. Mine has no dedicated video card and that is why my motherboard f*ck up easily. I can still play games like nba2k16, modern warfare etc. I bought it long time ago for 19k, whole desktop package that Includes CPU, Monitor and other peripherals. Since I got a job and I was able to save some money. I already bought Asus GL552vx and runs perfectly.
