Title: New poclbm GUI Miner Mac .app [now with bfgminer + cpuminer]
Post by: Anonymailer on April 03, 2013, 09:01:32 PM
This thread has been replaced and may not be up to date. Please check here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=197110.0

The last one was from 2011 so I figured perhaps someone would appreciate a binary of a the latest version (with stratum support) to get mining without having to drop down to the command line and install some dependencies…

http://fabulouspanda.co.uk/guiminer/guiminer.app.zip (requires 10.8 )

edit: or try my new native mac GUI - choose from poclbm, bfgminer or cpuminer for scrypt in the 'View' menu:
http://fabulouspanda.co.uk/MacMiner10.8-1.0.2.pkg (Mac OS 10.8 )

http://fabulouspanda.co.uk/MacMiner10.7-1.0.2.pkg (Mac OS 10.7)

^Both signed with my developer ID. always get the app from fabulouspanda.co.uk or the github: https://github.com/fabulouspanda/MacMiner
(I recommend MacMiner as it doesn't require a force quit and you can stop the poclbm process without using activity monitor - although currently if you don't stop it before you quit you still need to do it that way - it won't keep mining once you've quit, but having several instances of poclbm running idle bugs me personally. Will update to stop on quit soon.)

Known issues: if you don't press 'stop' on any miner you start in the app, they keep running after you quit and need taking care of in Activity Monitor (in your utilities folder)

Notes: While I find poclbm is very good at finding the right operating temperature on a MBP with default settings, I take no responsibility if you overheat your computer with this software! Don't blame me if you set the intensity high up and it burns out your graphics card! My 17"MBP doesn't seem to have a problem with it (in cold english winter weather) but if your GPU is less tolerant of heat (specific tolerances vary even with the same models) it could potentially burn out your gpu, and at least one person on the board has reported leaving a work iMac running a miner overnight and finding the gpu non-functional the next day. Don't push it too hard!

Set fans to rev up with something like smcFancontrol
www.eidac.de

Keep an eye on those temperatures with iStat Pro:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html

If you're extra generous, throw a bit my way  ;)

Sorry, that one didn't have python or poclbm etc. included, find a working version here:
http://fabulouspanda.co.uk/guiminer.app.zip

(original post will be updated with the working link!)

Thx for doing this, but I'm having some trouble with it.
1) I can't change settings
2) It will not quit

I'm running a Macbook Pro 2.2 i7 with an AMD Radeon HD 6750M, OS X 8.3

My question... is there an undated version? The one I have is dated v2012 -11-18.

And I should and a third issue: the work doesn't show in the pool, coinotron.  Shares are being accepted, and my rate is showing 66 Mhash/s.

Again, thx for your efforts.

Hey, thanks for the feedback, I should have added some extra info

This app was made using py2app (same as the 2011 version someone else put together back then)

That means that you can launch the poclbm process mining with your settings but you're not able to alter them once it's started, and you have to force quit when you want it closed.

The date comes from the poclbm gui project on github, I don't think there's an undated version.. I just bundled their project in to a mac .app with py2app, it works a bit better if you install the project and the dependencies the linux way and launch it from the terminal, but this should work for people who don't want to do that.

I'm running exactly the same setup as you with the same results, but the pool (slush) shows the results. I would recommend setting the pool to 'other' and entering all the settings manually, I didn't change the included pool list so some of them might be out of date (slush's definitely was, it had the old url listed which changed when it moved over to stratum).

If you're using other already are your settings server coinotron.com port 3333 with user/pass that's working on another miner?

As an aside, I'm close to finishing a version of poclbm with a native Mac interface (rather than wxpython) which I'm going to put on the App store, which will let you quit etc.

Thx for the quick reply.
I'm trying to mine some litecoin using coinotron.  I used mine bitcoin using slush's pool, but the difficulty is just too high for bitcoin.  Slush's pool works fine, therefore my issue must be with litecoin and/or coinotron.
Again, thx for the very easy to understand help. I think I got it, now.

Ah the problem will be with litecoin, poclbm doesn't support scrypt mining which you need for litecoin unfortunately.

I'm probably going to package bfgminer with the miner I put on the app store though which should work for the various other currencies too.

Personally I'm still mining BTC with my MBP in the hope that the price will keep rising over the long term and eventually the return will be worthwhile  ;D

I'm a little torn over what do with my mining rig and MBP.  Bitcoins come in so slow now but they are quickly rising in value, so every little bit still counts.  But, I'm thinking it might be a good idea to own some "also-ran" coins, just in case others do even better over time as they play catch-up with bitcoin.
Litecoin is the current second and I'm thinking that Freicoin is so different and appealing to some very-true-believers that it might do something crazy one day and right now I can mine a ton of coins.

Hi there,

I'm having issues trying to get the GuiMiner app running on my Mac. Seems like I have the same setup as you guys - 2011 15inch MBP 2.2GHz i7 AMD 6750M on OSX 10.8.3. In windows I can run the windows version of GuiMiner without issue but I'm yet to get things up and running on OSX.

Basically the app just hangs when trying to connect, console/log window just stops at "connecting". I'm mining in Slush's pool and it seems to get the redirect for stratum all fine but doesn't get any further.

Any Ideas?

Regards
Hobsie

Hey, how long did you give it? it takes a minute or so for my Mac Pro to start accepting shares with the guiminer unlike poclbm itself, for some reason (Just tested from fresh download to this machine now).
My console output:
2013-04-15 20:24:23: Running command: poclbm.app/Contents/MacOS/poclbm user.worker:pass@stratum.bitcoin.cz:3333 --device=1 --platform=0 --verbose -r1

I didn't test the app much, and where I did was just macs that previously had the old guiminer ( https://github.com/downloads/pletoss/poclbm/guiminer-poclbm-macosx.dmg ) installed prior to using the new one, as well as various command line miners/dependencies. The only other test was in a Mac VM which gave me the impression mine might have been missing a dependancy that had been installed by that original version- but I haven't had time to work on testing that or the native gui I'm working on the last week and I've forgotten precisely what the input I got out of the app was! And may have been an issue with the VM not having direct access to the GPU.

But, maybe try installing that old version, then after running that successfully you can switch to mine for stratum support, and if that works let me know too and when I get a chance I'll look in to what I left out!

Hmm perhaps I have more of a fundamental issue then. Running that older gui miner in osx gives me this log with verbose on.

oooh um I hope I haven't caused this problem for you but here's something interesting - when I checked out my current build of the native Mac GUI version I'm putting together, which uses the same py2apped poclbm it works fine in build and in Applications directory, but when it's in the archive package it gives me the errors you're getting there… I'm not even sure why, but maybe if you move it to there (if it's not there already) it will work?

You can try with the Mac GUI I've put it up here:
http://fabulouspanda.co.uk/MacMiner.app.zip
You can't set arguments yet, it's not linked up and neither is the ? button but the miner works with default poclbm settings. Just make sure it's in the /Applications folder  ???

I guess I may as well put that up on github now too

I wouldn't worry about it being caused by yourself, thinking back this might have been happening before I found the version you linked up top!

So I've tried your new app (nice start btw :), what you making it with?) but I get the same issue.

The .app's had already been put in the applications folder - it's interesting that you can replicate the issue by trying to run it from the package.

Drawing up blanks on what might be my issue.

I appreciate the help.

edit: Actually I've gotten slightly different error messages.

Code:

edit2: I guess it's a little worrying that trying to run the poclbm.py scripts directly via terminal pump out a bunch of errors O_o

No problem, I just wish I knew what was going on! I only get the same problem as your first one, and only if i run from the xcode archive package directly…

The last one looks like it might have been a typo server address maybe?

Do you have xcode and the command line tools installed by any chance?

I'm just wondering whether

Code:
exec(compile

is failing because OS X.8 needs both to compile software - whether the compile there is the problem? You can get both on the app store... install xcode, then go preferences - downloads and get the developer tools - but you need to set up a developer id i think (which is free)

I'm using xcode to put the thing together… if you get it installed you can check whether it works from project built in xcode on your system…

Thanks for all your help mate. Looks like it's got nothing to do with your stuff (fortunate for you, unfortunate for me).

I just grabbed the head of the poclbm git repo and did a fresh install of PyOpenCL etc and i'm getting much the same errors as I did with the GuiMiner (the older version) when running it directly in the terminal.

I think i'll make a new topic and see if anyone has an idea.

Thanks again for all the help!

I'm running OS X 10.7.5, 2.5 GHz i5, 16GB Ram, Radeon HD 6750M. Your new version of GUI Miner does not detect my GPU with the error message "No OpenCL devices were found" however the older version of GUI Miner that was built for Mac 2012-11-18 version does detect my GPU and works fine for mining.

Thanks for the feedback, looks like the core isn't working properly, can you please download the new poclbm package (they made some Mac OS relevant changes since the last package) here:
http://www28.zippyshare.com/v/69215613/file.html

and unzip that poclbm.app then right click my guiminer.app - show package contents, then go /Contents/MacOS and replace the poclbm.app there with the new one, and let me know how it goes? I haven't integrated that into my guiminer yet as I'm cutting my hosting limit fine as it is!

One thing though - the 2012-11-18 one is my guiminer and the 2011-x-x version is the old one - was that a typo or is it actually mine that's working for you? Or it's MacMiner that's saying No OpenCL… ?

Your version is saying No OpenCL.

let me know how it goes?
Same message after replacing the app within the app, No OpenCL.

Interestingly enough the error console showed up from leaving the No OpenCL window open for a bit and showed the following.

Hmm, one more for you to try which uses the latest pyopencl rather than the 2012 version that pip has and is on a dmg as i noticed a 'not-zip-safe' flag in it's .egg… hopefully one of those two changes will address the issue for you! Let me know… If it still doesn't work I'll get around to installing a Lion VM   :-[

http://fabulouspanda.co.uk/poclbm.dmg

You can also try running the poclbm.app/Contents/MacOS/poclbm executable directly, if you drag that file in to the terminal and type user.worker:pass@pool:port it might give some clearer output that running through guiminer… thanks for the console output so far!

scratch that, doesn't work on 10.7... I'll try to find out why. so sorry all, both are 10.8 only for now

from total noob standstill, that has set up a mining account on mining.bitcoin.cz, how do I setup MacMiner from the beginning??

do I use my site login info? or the worker/password info?

this is what I've got so far:

Hey, glad to see it looks as though it's working for you, and lucky I use slush's pool too so I can help you out here!

change pool to stratum.bitcoin.cz:3333 (you can leave out the http://)

it looks to me as though you have the user/pass set up correctly, as long as that's registered at mining.bitcoin.cz - you use usernameyoulogintothesitewith.individualworkername for user and the password for the worker, not the login to the website.

Please do let me know how you get on! I'm especially interested in whether it works fine for people who haven't already installed any of the dependencies, and if you're new to mining I'm guessing that's the case for you?

I have installed MacPorts and some other things, is that the dependencies you're talking about?

Great, glad that helped!

I was mostly wondering about python modules that could have been installed, like pyopencl, but I've just now run MacMiner in the 10.8 VM I have set up, even after removing some system included dependencies like numpy it seems to run fine, as should be expected with the included framework, I was mainly concerned because one 10.8 user was having problems, and wasn't sure why!

Hope you get some good mining in before BFL ships it's ASICs  ;D

This miner is way better than anything I've used on OS X so far.  Native Stratum support, works without having to install or modify additional files, I can have my BTC wallet open at the same time...  I posted a question in the newbie pen before they let me out:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=186119.0

I'm curious to know if there is a way to save your profile info (pool/port #, options, user, pw) for the next time you load the application.  Is that a future feature, or is there a trick?  Thanks for the help and the awesome application.

Thanks for the positive feedback! I really appreciate it. I might even quote you on my CV  ;D

I've updated MacMiner now to support saving options (that was kinda bugging me too) and to support fullscreen mode - the link is the same:

http://fabulouspanda.co.uk/MacMiner.app.zip (http://fabulouspanda.co.uk/MacMiner.app.zip)

it's a bit bigger now though as I've also included python 2.7.4 and updates to poclbm, hopefully my bandwidth allowance will make it through to May!

The settings save now, but it threw exceptions at me when I fired up the miner:

 25/04/2013 00:07:53, Setting server (onenoname.worker3 @ stratum.bitcoin.cz:3333)
Exception in thread Thread-1:
Traceback (most recent call last):

IOError: [Errno 1] Operation not permitted: '1b21e1330112c99d8c7a0496c3257a34.elf'

The older version still does the trick, though.  I hope it's an easy fix for you.  And, for the record, it's still an awesome program.

Whoops, thanks for the heads-up!

I've uploaded a version with the new features but the older smaller poclbm and code-signing turned off, I'm fairly sure poclbm is the issue but I'll need to set up a new test environment before I can figure out for sure as they both work on my machine and VM, strangely enough! Link is still the same - or you can drop the poclbm.app in the old MacMiner.app/Contents/Resources in the new, broken one at the same place, replacing the defective version, in which case I would appreciate you letting me know if that fixes it as it would confirm the cause of the issue for me!

Replacing the new poclbm.app with the old one got the miner working.

Cool thank you! And for saving me the bandwidth ;)

I promise to start testing these on a clone of a fresh 10.8 install outside of a virtual machine before I change the app available! Won't necessarily say the same of the github project though. That might need a little tinkering sometimes but I'll start releasing stable versions at some point soon so people can check what they're running.

Should get a HD of a dozen clean OS installs set up for testing and the new version ready sometime on the weekend - up next, signing properly with my Dev ID to stop the 'unknown developer' warning, adding cgminer + bflminer backend options (Scrypt/litecoin/ASIC support), a preference window and view options (get some of those fancy dial-type display options for hash rates etc., which I anticipate might see more use when people move to mine on chips outside their computer case).

Requests will definitely be considered, but that's what I have in mind so far.

Nice.  Shiny gauges would be pretty slick.  You've definitely got the back end nailed.  I was around 65-68MH/s on Diablo and I'm doing about 75MH/s with MacMiner.

Let me know if you need any beta testers or any other help.

Thanks for the awesome product.

I got the same error on the same GPU (Radeon 6750M) and on Lion.  I tried both the older (and otherwise working with the old GuiMiner) 2011 POCLBM and the latest one as described neither make any difference, the problem seems to be your version of GuiMiner.

Any chance of a fix?

Any chance of a fix? (for 10.7)

I'll be updating the binaries on the weekend and I'll do my best to get MacMiner working with 10.7 then!

MacMiner has been updated to include cpuminer for scrypt and with bugfixes for bfgminer - the different miners are now available from the 'View' menu. Get it here:

Well MacMiner now runs on 10.7, however it appears to have at least two problems:

Quote
07/05/2013 11:13:21, Ignored invalid server entry:
No PyOpenCL

Not using OpenCL

Nothing to mine on, exiting

Problem 1:
The Invalid server entry I dont get, Ive tried both stratum.bitcoin.cz:3333  and http://api.bitcoin.cz:8332  - no difference. My username is the normal Slush workername (siteloginname.workername) but even leaving username blank get the same error.

Problem 2:
Seems the no OpenCL error persists.. does it really require me to download and compile PyOpenCL? The old Guiminer still works fine in this regard, full OpenCL straight away!

Invalid server entry seems to show up regardless, I get that on a working miner.

The PyOpenCL error - are you using the version from this thread or the new 10.7 installer here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=197110.0

?

The one one this thread would definitely give you that error but the 10.7 installer should work for …

Woops, yes I had the other version, didnt see the update in the other thread.

However now I get this error with the correct 10.7 version:

Quote

This the new version of poclbm.app bug as above?

Post by: Anonymailer on May 07, 2013, 11:31:21 AM
Damn, my bad, but you can fix that by right clicking MacMiner.app and choosing Show Package Contents then select 'Contents' folder in the window that opens, right click-get info and click the lock on the bottom right of the info window then change all permissions to 'read+write' and click the sprocket+down arrow button and choose 'apply to contents'. Once that's run it should work for you.

I'll push a new version ASAP! Thanks for the bug report.

Indeed that worked, fast turnaround, thanks! :)
So GPU mining with a nice Gui on MacOS 10.7 with an AMD 6750M with Stratum support.. looks good!

It gave me a notice a new version is out.. but wanted to see if this worked before risking an update. :D

Yeah, needless to say I'm pretty happy with that :)

After installing the Mac OS 64bit drivers here:
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

we ran:
./bfgminer -o pool.name.com:port -u username -p password -S bfl:/dev/cu.usbserial-FTWILFLM

I'll be making a specific external device view for MacMiner very soon!

If you buy me one? 110%

I'll look in to it in any case, from a quick search of the thread I get the impression bfgminer is supposed to work with it.

I'd use CG Miner, which is referenced as working at the beginning of the thread, but they changed from usbserial connections (which requires FTDI drivers for the device to work) to straight usb connections - but didn't look in to making it work for Mac. So as I understand it CGMiner won't work with any external hardware on Mac, and as BFG Miner does still, I'm too busy to check whether that's been fixed or fix it myself.

Right now I'm pretty busy with a major update for the weekend, which may or may not work with these devices - once installed FTDI drivers from here: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm plug in device, open terminal and type ls /dev/cu.* and it'll show as something like /dev/cu.serialusb-something then you can enter -S /dev/cu.serialusb-something in 'options' in bfgminer (in the 10.8 version - more fully featured 10.7 coming this weekend)
I say may or may not work as it may just be the fresh git of bfgminer that works with it and i'm using the stable 3.0.2 - if it doesn't work and you've got one of the devices I can be spurred in to creating you a replacement that does work within 24hours for a little incentive ;) (and if you're broke, but mining, that incentive can just be using my 0.5% fee pool at pool.fabulouspanda.co.uk:9332 user a BTC address for payout pass anything;)[/cheese and sleaze] but let me know in any case if it doesn't work and it'll get done pretty soon anyway.

also, please post in this thread going forwards:

Hi,

Is it possible to add hashrack.com:8337 to the MacMiner under BFG automatic settings?

Thanks

Sure, I've added that to the server list in autoconfig of 1.2
