:D i think nobody is really understanding ripple.
i tried to read the whole documentationt. i understand maybe 90% of it
BUT i dont understand how any other currency than XRP is gettin in and out of the system..

if bitcoin is too complicated for the masses.. then ripple is rocket science!

I see what you mean.
It looks like access to "gateways" is still "coming soon"

Last week I uses WeExchange to put a small amount of bitcoins into my Ripple account, and it wasn't hard - but I have forgotten how I did it. I'm sure if I want to do more I can figure it out easy enough.

Its the internal deal making and handling that I'm still fuzzy on, and I don't really have the time right now to dig into it.

I see lots of possibilities with Ripple.

Now if I can find someone or an exchange to actually buy Ripples, then I might be able to do something with it. ???

I dont think they are officially selling them yet. Pretty hard to get especially if you have no bitcoins. Buying it with ordinary cash is kinda hard

But is there a way to buy them for bitcoin? And what's the approximate price for BTC/XRP?

Now there is a blast from the past!   Or was it TV Land?

The best I can figure out it's a convenient way to exchange currencies.

You buy XRP in USD, send the XRP to a business, friends or family and they sell the XRP for their currency. I guess the idea is that eventually people will cease using XRP to exchange for another currency and will begin trading directly in XRP?

Ripple confuses me too.

Remember, Ripple is still beta software; once they release it, everything should be mainstreamed and understandable, with easy to understand documentation for what to do with it and how to do it.

Should is the key operator here.

I'm interested in the Ripple platform, seems like it could be a good alternative for transferring money into Argentinian Pesos at the "blue rate" without fees. I'm interested in trying the platform and seeing how it evolves, so if anyone would like to spare a few Ripples, I would appreciate it: rBdVPECNfrgDfpj5WHJBchtv6gZ4Bo6QMR

I figured this out. I am using bitstamp to fund the account using bitcoin. I found out they have a gateway with Ripple.

I am waiting for the TT to post on my account. I tell bitstamp how many bitcoins I want to send to Ripple,

Then as I understand it I have to grant the gateway a trust limit to receive the Bitcoins in Ripple.

However I am new to Ripple so everything I say could be wrong.

Market price? I have no clue. But I will take any Ripples for free, no limit.

Is there an easy way to buy XRP?

https://www.bitstamp.net/market/xrp/

You can put money on through bank transer, bitstamp code, bitinstant transfer or bitcoin deposit.

Is it just me, or does it seem that one needs 300XRP to "activate" an account in order to buy more XRP.. I don't quite understand. I'm willing to convert some BTC into XRP (I have an empty account on ripple.com) but I don't see how to get started.

Any advice for a newbie trying Ripple? ???

Thanks, in advance.

If you can help it, don't use it soley as a means to get bitcoin.  Ripple is used better when it's used to actually manage things outside of money -- keeping track of who needs to chip in for coffee, and so on.  Don't put too much trust in anyone, including exchanges -- only trust what you would be willing to lose.

You may want to read https://ripple.com/wiki/Reserves

tl; dr you need a minimum amount of XRP to
* Start an account
* Create a connection to someone else
* Send a payment through the network.

Any advice for a newbie trying Ripple? ???

Thanks, in advance.

My opinion that Ripple will not live by three reason:

1. No benefits for nodes to support the network. A few people will do it for free.

2. OpenCoin holds almost all of XRP, it is impossible to put it in a circulation in fair way for to satisfy all of participant.

3. Too complicated for understand.

My opinion that Ripple will not live by three reason:

 1. No benefits for nodes to support the network. A few people will do it for free.

From the Ripple.com wiki:

Who will run validating nodes?
Quote
Anyone whose business relies on the network:
Gateways
Merchants
Arbitragers
Day traders
Anyone who wants to support currency choice:
Digital rights groups
Libertarian groups
Individuals
Anyone who wants to support the underbanked:
Organizations
Individuals
Anyone who wants to provide a public service:
Universities
Anyone who provides hosting services for open source projects

ie enough people that this, while in theory is a valid concern, isn't going to be much of a serious one.

Quote
2. OpenCoin holds almost all of XRP, it is impossible to put it in a circulation in fair way for to satisfy all of participant.

There's always going to be a way to satisfy some(at the cost of others) in distribution of wealth - this wealth distribution problem is not unique to ripple, and not even really unique to currency.  However you're correct in that if it's not distributed in a way that satisfies enough people Ripple will not succeed.  It does not have to satisfy all participants, however -- just enough of them.  Network effects and other factors will take care of the rest.

Quote
3. Too complicated for understand.

As far as the interface is concerned, that will be improved as more businesses get involved, and the server is released.  As far as Ripple itself...well maybe.  But then again, the internet and email is pretty complicated, but people figured those out.

Quote
The trust and liquidity providing features are also flawed.

This sounds like semantics.

You should get an address by going to www.ripple.com/client then you have to activate your account by persuading someone kind amd trusting to send you XRP.  You should then move some BTC that you own to Ripple, convert them to XRP and then of course pay back your original funder, plus a generous tip.

Of course, I am at that stage so if anyone would like to create some karma, please send me a few hundred XRP and I will of course pay you back!

rPHtEbMmjtdb3epZCBkWmkpesfejetuyAm is my Ripple address.

Many thanks
