yes you can, and using a desktop wallet is actually so much better than using one of those web wallets.
check out here: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet also this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1631151.0

but remember that the safety of your wallet is only dependent on the safety of your computer. which means you should keep your computer clean, a malicious program such as a key logger can steal your coins easily.

also i suggest learning more about cold storage if you have a large amount of bitcoin.

Lightweight wallet like electrum can be considered as way to store bitcoin within your computer/laptop.

You can also store bitcoin in paper wallet which will be completely offline but you can't move bitcoin from one address to another offline. You have to import that paper wallet address scanning private key of that address in any of the web wallet to send bitcoin out of that address. Also you can store in hardware wallet and they will stay offline till you don't connect it to your laptop.

Thats not entirely true, you can import private key also to software wallets like electrum, multibit or bitcoin core.  You don't need to import paper wallet to online wallets.
Better to keep you coins offline, paper wallet is great but software wallets are second to best and third one are online wallets.

The paper wallet is not meant for every day use. It is more like a piggy bank in your room. You deposit money into it, but it is not connected

to any bank account. If you want to use that money, you have to break the piggy bank open and then deposit that money into the bank to

use it. { this part, is when you sweep the private key onto a web wallet or also to software wallets like electrum, multibit or bitcoin core, like

Velkro said.

Paper wallet like any other has private and public keys. The private key should be kept secret, because it gives you full control over the funds, while the public key is used to receive funds.
To request a payment or send money to your paper wallet, simply choose an address and send it to the payer. You can also carry a qr code with you and let someone scan it with their phone.
When you decide to make payments you should use a desktop wallet like electrum, add the private key using the "swipe" function, do all the payments and transfer the rest of the money to a new offline address.

Yes. it's possible. All you need to do is download an HD or lite wallet and keep your coins in there. Actually you can just buy a flash drive and never connect it to the internet unless you really need to so that your coins would be safe. You don't really need to buy those fancy hardware wallets just to keep your coins in deep cold storage. All you need is awareness and knowledge on what your doing.

If you have a fast internet to download much better to download the bitcoin-qt that you can found in the top left of the forum near to home button and tabs and download the whole blockchain.. but if you want a lite weight you can use electrum that you can found here https://electrum.org/#download
I'm not halving any issue in that desktop wallet.. than online wallet experience of delay and risky.

You can. Download an the official desktop wallet from here (https://bitcoin.org/en/download) . Or if you have a slow connection and want a faster wallet try using Electrum (https://electrum.org) wallet. Desktop wallets are much safer than online web wallets. You have full control over your coins.  :)

Yes, you can, but be very cautious when doing it by making sure your computer is not infected with any kind of virus. Then download Electrum, this is the software I recommend you, find a very good password, very hard to bruteforce, and then, you will be ready to accept bitcoins !

As quoted be cautious while using desktop wallets. It won't gets hacked as its out of network, so no need to fear of hackers. At the same it has the chance of getting infected by error coding while plugging external hardware or on installation of software which are highly not recommended. Also it needs to be kept safe, formatting data needs several process to retain it.

Yes. You can store your btc on your computer without going online. Use bitcoin core wallet or any SPV wallet. Dont use any online wallet especially coinbase. Its not really safe there. Becareful on storing bitcoin on your computer. Your computer must be a clean computer. Just install a good antivirus and install the wallet. I suggest use electrum wallet because its light and easy to use.

Should you? No.. especially since you are new. I would suggest you download an app like breadwallet or buy a hardware wallet like Trezor.

If you have a computer just for your BTC its pretty good solution for your BTC.  Password protect and put it away under the bed better than many solutions.  You can pick up laptop for mega cheap these days.

You can store on a computer but none of wallets is safe, they are vulnerable to hacks at different degrees. Saving on computer deserve caution on network connection and computer having fault

An even cheaper solution is to install a clean operative system in an usb, install a wallet in there and then only connect your usb when you need to do a transaction.

There are different kinds of wallets for different things. You can use a software or online wallet for everyday use like Electrum or blockchain if you are comfortable with less protection. If you want to store your Bitcoin for a longer period of time, then it is smarter to use a hardware wallet or maybe even a paper wallet.

Yes you can actually store bitcoins in your computer. Before web wallet was out the primary wallets being used at the time bitcoin started in 2009 was actually a desktop wallet. You just download the software and there you go you can now store your bitcoins in your computer. But much more than that you can even store it even in your flask drive or hard drive how much more in your computer.

If anyone here is doing that I would love to hear your experience and what OS you are using.
I'm assuming most people would use a Linux live CD but I'm wondering if any flavor of Linux offers advantages over another.

Is anyone using the Bitkey live cd/ usb?

You can store it by using Desktop Wallets, but if you want to store them on a computer then I recommend you to use an old laptop (if smaller it's perfect) and install Linux on it. There is a version that has a Bitcoin desktop wallet in it included. Your chances of getting hacked or infected are going to be way smaller, almost 0.

its a good solution for us to save our bitcoin into our computer and i think to install linux on it its also a good suggestion as we know that linux is the most secure and less infected with virus. the desktop wallet the OP can choose maybe bitcoin-core, multibit classic or HD, jaxx, or electrum. althought you install linux on it, you need to careful to save the private keys, because if the private keys is known by other people, then they can stole your bitcoin.

Yes you can store like download the Electrum Desktop wallet which is very lite and easy to use, when you install it , it gives you 16 words pass phrass, just keep it safe in multi place as this passphrasss will be needed  if you delete your wallet without taking backup or anything happens to your computer this passphrass needed to reinstall the wallet.

Of course you can. I would say desktop wallets are relatively better than online wallets.

However, it all depends on the state of the computer that you re using to store it. Things can easily go wrong if a there is malicious attack on your computer. Therefore, you do need a good antivirus to store Bitcoin on your desktop.

You can indeed have a wallet on your own computer.  In fact, I recommend it.   ;)

I know others have already recommended quite a few, but I just wanted to add a few details in, if I may.

First, there are wallets like the aforementioned Bitcoin-QT and Armory* that download the entire blockchain to your hard drive.  These are nice in that you don't depend on a third-party's copy of the blockchain.  Currently, though, this is for the most part just a small boon since everyone's copies of the blockchain should be the same (or if they aren't, the dissimilar ones won't be able to make official transactions and will be ignored by the network).
*The original Armory is still working but hasn't been updated recently.  Someone else picked up ("forked") the project, here: https://github.com/goatpig/BitcoinArmory

Next, there are light wallets, which store your private keys on your computer, but use a third-party's blockchain.  Electrum is the only one of these wallets I know of, but there are likely others out there.  What's nice about these is that you don't have any large downloads or need a lot of disk space.  Transactions are still safe, too, as your private key is never sent over the network during the process.

Storage wise, you CAN have your client on a USB stick or external hard drive, but do be careful; if you have your private key stored on the drive and then something happens to it (lost/stolen/filesystem corruption, etc...), there will be no way to retrieve your bitcoins.  It is strongly suggested that no matter what you do, your wallet.dat file should at least be backed up to two different drives.

Yes, ofcourse. You can store your bitcoin in computer using a cold storage wallet. That is also using my friend here in the community the cold storage cause it has a most secure wallets but by the way , you should back up your account to recover your wallet in computer if the computer is corrupt the system.

Electrum is a well known SPV client like as multibit and is open source too. Thanks to devs that means is free and anyone can use it without pay a penny except some small donations. It's not a service where someone pays every month or annually. But if you are willing to pay electrum can work in cooperation with trustedcoin. In their first page they say that the fee for every transaction is 0.0005 btc https://api.trustedcoin.com/#/electrum-help . In reality many people, I am one of them, are using it every day without security problems if they have common sense and follow some security measures. Moreover, there is a very active community https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=98.0 willing to reply in your answers. Imho if you want more security than is offered from electrum go with HD wallets trezor, ledger, keepkey etc.

Electrum is the best free choice to do it. Make sure you know you install it in a clean PC otherwise if your PC has malware or keyloggers then even electrum can't help much.

I would recommend you to buy a cheap hardware wallet , the cheapest one costs 0.02 btc and it has better security than an online bank account.

Please read this thread at the link below as it is the best investment anyone can do for himself, if he wants to be a true bitcoiner. If you want my opinion don't listen that much to people who say stick to desktop wallet as you don't have to pay anything. I prefer peace of mind in the end that's why I use a hardware wallet like Ledger, no regrets , have it since September and have kept all of my btc in there without any problem.
The thread below can help you make the best decision in your life if you are serious about bitcoin and believe in it to the max extent, like I do.

You can store your Bitcoins on your computer using hardware wallet but I.don't know how clever that is. If your computer get infected with some virus or similar your coins will be endangered too.
There is no wallet with absolute protection so to avoid th complete damage I would split the coins in multiple wallets, icluding online, hardware and others.

That is not correct. Hardware wallets are malware proof. Because you do the transactions within the chip for example in HW.1 hardware wallet and you have a security card which matches lowercase letters with different symbols, uppercase letters with different symbols and numbers with different symbols. The only user who have this security card which comes with your wallet know the combinations. So the hardware wallet is malware proof.

The only way it can get hacked, is if the user has it's PC infected with keyloggers and does more than 10.000 thousands transaction so the keylogger can get the combinations of the security card.

To avoid this, just use this HW.1 hardware wallet in a Linux PC, if you are a noob in Linux, use Linux Mint as a second OS in your free hard disk space.

Yes with a qt wallet. Bitcoin started with the wallet and chain then online chains with wallets you can use with. so we dont have to download the entire chain. Its just about saving size and making ot faster and easier.

Yes, you can store your coins in an offline wallet which we call a cold wallet.
I only this offline wallet " Cold wallet " which is multibit , It's safe and no need to trust 3rd party offline wallet.

I made a quick glance in the thread. I want to say that technically you are not really storing Bitcoin locally in your computer. It is all right there in the blockchain. But you do control the "coins" you have by having or knowing the private key to unlock them. Cloudcoin is a closer and a more appropriate name for Bitcoin if you study at it well.

installing linux pc is one solution to prevent our computer from virus or another attacker, after that you can install bitcoin software wallet which is electrum or anything else.

although there is no safe place to keep our bitcoin with hardware or without hardware, at least we have trying to prevent and minimalize the attacker that trying to stolen our bitcoin.

This mean you can access your bitcoin  thru your computer directly with the use of software like bitcoin core wallet, or other light wallet like electrum, multibitHD etc.  And you can have the wallet  that contain the private key and public key to that address in the blockchain.  You can also back up those access keys and be able to transfer the control from one computer to another computer.
So logically you cannot store your bitcoin in your computer but can gain access and control to it thru desktop applications.

Code:
. Every Bitcoin wallet contains one or more private keys, which are saved in the wallet file.
The private keys are mathematically related to all Bitcoin addresses generated for the wallet.

Yes exactly. But most of the answers here show that most of them are clueless about how Bitcoin works or maybe they do not care. Read the answers right after my post. None of them care. They just say yes and tell you to download a piece of software so that you can "hold" Bitcoins in your computer.

I know. Most People here just bump into different threads just for the sake of adding their activity count or post count which is kind of annoying actually. The topics aren't going fluid and it just keeps on going over and over, people posting again the same thing, and yes they don't really care. Plus their the ones having signature campaigns while others who are much more worthy are in the waiting list. So sad for them.To the OP -your questions have already been answered. Can you? Technically yes..

Should you? No.. especially since you are new. I would suggest you download an app like breadwallet or buy a hardware wallet like Trezor.

If you have a computer just for your BTC its pretty good solution for your BTC.  Password protect and put it away under the bed better than many solutions.  You can pick up laptop for mega cheap these days.

I like this idea! Excellent way to store coins I haven't thought of.
Basically what he is describing is an air gap computer that has no connection to the Internet, never has and never will.

If you are going to buy a cheap laptop to do this with then just pick up some old cheap one and make sure it does not have any wireless Internet features.

It is possible even if you're lost your connection in your computer. SPV wallet. It's will be well there is the internet connection or not. At least you must take care of your computer, and keep it so far from the stealing virus or broken hardware.

According to most of the recommendations I've seen so far, storing Bitcoin on a personal computer may be safer than storing it in online wallets. This needs to be a reliable computer, of course, and even better if you can keep it offline most of the time.
The ideal would be to store your coins in multiple places, because you never know if you will lose access to one of the wallets.

This idea is also good that storing the bitcoins in multiple wallet so that tomorrow any problem occurs like hacking or virus we should not affected by keeping in single wallet and getting lost it.

For me electrum wallet is the best free PC Bitcoin wallet, but I always advice people especially if your holding is huge to make use of paper wallet for better security.

Well, storing coins on online wallets is even more risky as you do not have the private key and it the Site goes away, all your coins are lost. On the other hand, if you have desktop wallet on your computer and you have saved your private key somewhere like paper etc, then no matter how many times your computer crashes, your bitcoins are safe always.

Yup although it is high risk losing the bitcoins because it is offline wallet and if
we can not do the back up the wallets or forget the private key or the computer is break the bitcoins will be gone,
i think more safe use two kinds of wallets (online and offline wallets).

Hardest part using paper wallet is keep your private key safe.

Yes you can!
Wallets like Coinbase and Blockchain are web wallets and most of the users don't prefer to use it.
Nice substitute to carry daily transactions along with providing safety to your Bitcoin is web wallet. Try Electrum, considered to be best!

These days we have got lots of online wallets. People fear of losing through hacking for which hardware and offline wallets were preferred. In my view its better to go with online wallets for the easy access from anywhere which is not possible with offline wallets.

yes you can save it. very many sites that provide desktop wallet. but, I guess that all have one thing in common: they are all equally requires an internet connection to access it. I recommend storing them in blockchain, or Coinbase. because it is a trusted wallet to store bitcoin

yes you can, and using a desktop wallet is actually so much better than using one of those web wallets.
check out here: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet also this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1631151.0

but remember that the safety of your wallet is only dependent on the safety of your computer. which means you should keep your computer clean, a malicious program such as a key logger can steal your coins easily.

also i suggest learning more about cold storage if you have a large amount of bitcoin.

Your links really are helpful and I have look to it and realize a great storage for my bitcoin that I can try on but I have taken just one each in desktop and with android,

I am now using Bitcoin Core on my desktop that is a full bitcoin client and builds backbone of the network, a high level of privacy, security, and stability but the downside is it could accumulated a lot of space and memory.

and on my android devices I have been using Bitcoin wallet that is secure and fast it is very easy to use and reliable no need for central service for bitcoin related operations.

you definitely can store them but you will need to take precautions to avoid a third party from accessing your computer without permission as  access to your wallet might be compromised by keyloggers downloaded unknowingly .

Best practice to avoid all of this future problem you must have a strong password for your desktop wallet and of course an active antivirus like eset nod32 which can detect if when you try to open some malicious link or installed an executable one on your PC. And always update this anti-virus, but even if you have this programs if you're just careless then it's possible that this keylogger can cause problems for you.

as far as I know there's also a offline wallet that you can use to store your bitcoin and you may find it at bitcoin.org but I don't know if it's a hard wallet, light wallet or whatsoever because I am only using a web wallet .

Yes of course you can do it buddy. Because this is claimed to be more secure than using an online wallet. It is also called the cold wallet, while for online called hot wallet.
Taken from the site bitcoin wallet (https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet) here you can use a couple of wallets.
electrum (https://electrum.org/#home)
multibit (https://multibit.org/)
bither (https://bither.net/)
copay (https://copay.io/)
bitcoinknots (http://bitcoinknots.org/)
btcarmory (https://btcarmory.com/)
ciphrex (https://ciphrex.com/)
If you wish to be satisfied with one of the wallet, you try all of them one by one until you find the most suitable and convenient to use by you. While I had been already comfortable with using a wallet made by electrum

Try a hardware wallet, the link in my sig can take you to a good one. Stores the coins on a USB stick, the private keys never leave the stick thus it is immune to malware. Keep the 24 word seed safe so you can restore the wallet should it get lost or damaged, you keep the seed on paper. You can use a HW wallet even on a compromised PC safely.
