Title: Suggestions for 200th ad round?
Post by: theymos on February 07, 2017, 12:45:05 AM
The 200th forum ad round will be in about a week. Normally I do some something on significant numbers like this. Any suggestions?

Rotate the 200th advertisement into the "News" at the top of the forum.

If you need some suggestions , one week is too long

You can add one rule to the auction ,

like:

Quote
If you want to auction, you need to put some money like (0.5btc) in some address firstly.

In case you auction for fun, or not pay after you get the auction

In this way, buy show all the members the address with 0.5 btcs.  the auction become more real ,interesting and active.

To make things a bit more interesting, how about this?

- The top bidder (person with the highest bid) gets the BTC from the slot sold for the lowest about of BTC. (and/or their slot for free)

People might bid higher even if they aren't outbid, or they might bid higher than they need to if they are outbid, and should make things more interesting.

Could make less BTC from the ads, or more. Who knows? If the highest bid is made by multiple people, the person who bid first wins the BTC/free slot.

OR

The top bidder (person with the highest bid) will get a permanent Factoid (https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo) slot. If the highest bid is made by multiple people, the person who bid first wins the BTC/free slot.

Will definitely raise more BTC and adds an interesting twist. Who wouldn't want to bid an extra 0.05BTC for a permanent factoid slot?

What did you do for the other big events (100th ad round I assume)?

How about having more than the normal number of ad slots.

I suggest to make the highest bidder who win the auction a Donator rank. I think this would make the auction exciting and get more revenue. And 5% of the proceed of the auction will go to me for suggesting it. joke.

It was 104th round.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=355169.0.

I think Vod's idea is good.  If not then a permanent factoid slot would be good too.

Edit: oh, Darkstar_ got the same idea.  I think all winners should get a slot though.  You can make it 6 month and not permanent if it's too much.

I would say either something like this (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=355169.0), or instead of having 10 slots, have 50/100 slots (or some other large amount) with each slot being displayed less frequently; there could be some kind of limit as to how many slots each person can bid on so that more people have the opportunity to advertise.

edit: I also like the idea that whoever wins the auction would get a donator tag (although I would find it unlikely this will be implemented).

edit2: Maybe bidders can bid on theymos' signature space

I think a custom title for a week would be cool

Maybe change the theme of SMF to a darker one for that particular day and let more than one add float around the page on the side bars.Something more flashy for that day/week.

I bet by doing it different he certainly doesn't mean making it cheap, your suggested amounts are not even cheap,it's basically worthless. No,theymos doesn't intend to give any free advertising on the 200th round.

How about the top bidder gets the slot for the entire year (or maybe several months or something if that's too long). Would surely make a great bidding war.

I think it would require changing some coding and doing it just for a week wouldn't be worth taking all the pain.
But if possible a additional ad slot after every 200th post and its multiplier would be a good incentive for advertisers to bid high for this week.

What about the guy whose bid is second? He gets only a week's advertising?  ;D
That would make people bid very carefully.

Second place would get their slot as normal. Why would it make someone bid carefully?

Because you wouldn't want to get into a bidding war for the first place and lose.
Then you will be left with a ridiculously high price for a normal slot.

Well that's the fun of it. Maybe getting the whole year of advertising would be worth the gamble.  I suppose you could offer lesser durations for second and third place to make it less risky for bidders.

Wouldn't that make things a little bit chaotic ? I mean If we take in consideration that the forum don't moderate scams and the advertised product or service is a scam , not a confirmed one but has a few scam accusations , what decision would be taken in that case ? It definitely could hurt some users so I'd say It's better to keep time as It is right now instead of expanding it to a few months/a year.

Why can't existing ads 'hurt someone'? And that's what the disclaimer below each advert is for, but I assume it would be handled in the same way any other auction would be. Theymos usually doesn't accept bids from sites that look suspect but having an auction for x amount of time doesn't suddenly cause problems. Since these slots will go for a premium it makes it less likely scammers will take advantage but already established businesses instead.

hilariousandco, I like pretty much your idea. That would make for the first time an advertisement bidding fun. A record price would be set for sure I think.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Combining some of the suggestions here, I decided to introduce a bonus prize consisting of some of the VIP perks, and I also changed the auction rules to encourage more active bidding. Here's the auction: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1789075.0

Does that thanks extend to Greenenergy?
Known farmed account and - therefore - scammer. (now shilling the latest scam advertised here - chronobank)

Certain extra risks, like "double or nothing"? You can bit for a slot, with a 50% chance of getting it, and 50% chance for getting the ad slot for two weeks. Something like that.

What did you do for the other big events (100th ad round I assume)?

How about having more than the normal number of ad slots.

Of course, you could automate it, but I'm pretty sure Theymos manually has to upload ads every week, and it says on the thread that it could be longer than 7 days, so it's not automated. In fact, it would be easier for him.
