Title: Pixelcoin - Is it gambling? Investment? Advertising? Artwork? You decide!
Post by: pixelcoin on April 17, 2013, 04:49:49 AM
http://i49.tinypic.com/2h55emg.png Pixelco.in Pixel Market

Pixelco.in (http://www.pixelco.in/) is collaborative distributed artwork in a bitcoin marketplace.

What does that mean? Basically, you can buy any number of pixels you want and mark them with an image you upload. That might be enough for a lot of people, and we could have stopped there.

But here's where it gets interesting: Pixelco.in (http://www.pixelco.in/) is like a chain game too, because someone can buy your pixels from you, and if they do, you earn a profit! Except unlike a chain game, your purchase never expires or resets, so there is no risk of loss. We can do this because there is no worry about runaway prices: if pixels get too expensive to buy a large block, you can just buy a smaller block!

Plus, after months of development, it is fast, fun, and easy to use. Check out our faq (http://www.pixelco.in/faq) or about page (http://www.pixelco.in/about) to read more!

You only start earning profit once the whole grid is filled and people buy your pixels..

But pretty clever idea :)

Thanks! And you're right, it may take some time before you would earn a profit, but in the meantime, you can link your image to whatever you want, and that's basically free advertising. So it's an especially great deal if you have something you want to link to.

To get things started out, I'm happy to announce a huge price cut: now just 0.01 btc buys 1,000 pixels!
This should help alleviate concerns about the space not filling up fast enough: at these prices, it won't take many purchases to fill up all the space.

I think it would be better if I could see information about what an image is linked to without clicking.  Maybe just have it show the target URL in the lower left (like every other HTML link does), or have a floating popup box that follows the mouse and shows the target.  Currently it's too slow, having to click then wait for the modal dialog to pop up.

Thanks for the input, I will consider doing something like that. There are some things I prefer about the modal, but I will admit that that part of the user experience isn't as optimized as it could be yet.

I'm happy to announce a requested feature: it is now possible to edit the thumbnail image for your link! This will not affect the image that is displayed on the homepage, but will allow you to set a custom thumbnail for the link display, as well as the transaction log. This is due to asymmetric images becoming oddly-cropped when put into a square format.

I would make the url clickable.

Yup I'd suggest just letting people click the pictures to take them to the website being advertised rather than asking for a confirm.

I agree, and am implementing something along these lines that I believe will make for a better user experience. Stay tuned for this update once it is ready and tested!

Thanks for all the positive feedback, everyone! I'm happy that everything has been running quite smoothly so far, but will also keep working on new improvements, refinements, and maintenance.

So you stole the "Million $ bitcoin homepage" idea from that other guy, simply made a better presentation of it, and it's working while his is collecting dust.

Awesome  ;D

Just goes to show that presentation (and a new twist if it's an old idea) is all you really need to make it work.

Actually, I didn't even see that until later: I stole the idea directly from the original million dollar homepage ;) Plus some inspiration from the bitcoin gem.

Apart from selling pixels on the forum are you advertising the page somewhere? (just a curious marketing question)

I really like the concept of this.

Gona be too expensive to buy the pixels some day though.

Thanks! And you're right, it could eventually reach that point, but the average price per pixel grows so slowly that something like this is far, far in the future. And even then, you can imagine getting around it by doing something like dividing each pixel into "sub-pixels", similar to a stock splitting.

Apart from selling pixels on the forum are you advertising the page somewhere? (just a curious marketing question)

I recently started an ad campaign on coinurl.

Yeah, it's not exactly what I had in mind, but it certainly makes things interesting!

I was very much hoping to avoid anything like censorship on pixelco.in, but this "war" has just gotten rather carried away. I'm posting this as notice that I intend to remove any attacks by name against another person. I hope to interfere as little as possible, but pixelco.in should not be a place for creating unreasonable attacks against your fellow bitcoiners!

Please note though: this will not cause you to lose ownership of your pixels, only the offending images/text will be changed.

Sorry about that, I was updating the site probably at just the moment where you tried to log in. Please try again, everything should be working, and let me know if you have any problems!

If you're worried about legal implications of hosting the libels uploaded against Micon, you might want to blank out his name on the thumbnails on the 'transaction log' page too.

Hey I posted in your other thread. ADs need to be resealable or it will fail. Nobody wants to buy a PXLs that they need to sell back to the dev, The
dev can then dump on the market whenever he wants. People with big money and whales will never buy it because their ADs hold no inherent value.

An ad needs equity!! How?? Make the pxl holder register their wallet with the site so if the balance changes they lost the position.

The people who say "Its a nice idea" have not actually tried to registered an ad and see what is actually going on. The price drop is from the fact that
an advertiser holds "NO EQUITY". Once they have a pxl and ad they sell it to the owner who claims he will not resell the pxl. But Bitcoin is a trustless
system and store of value. If their ADs hold no store of value then they will not invest. The model can be corrected:

*Instead of asking pxl owners to resell pxls, have them register their wallet with the site. This way, a registered wallet has to maintain the same PXL
balance in order to maintain their ad position. This way, they can sell their PXLs and effectively their AD position at any time.

This allows for advertisements that APPRECIATE which is a brilliant idea imho. If the dev does not do this the idea will fail because nobody will resell PXLs
to the dev because they instantly lose advertising equity. Easier to advertise using other methods like bots. If you are the developer please read this and
make this change or I guarantee you there will never be volume on PXL. Investors are getting smarter to pump+dump and that is why coins dont pump as fast anymore. So this needs to be more than a dump to succeed.

The dev may want to create a new thread and incorporate this change. Hope this helps and best of luck.
