i have found a wallet with 40 BTC.
The last transaction was 2011.
Can i take the money?
Or is it not legal?

How did you found it ? Using the block explorer, or on a hard drive ? If it is on a hard drive, yes you can take it, lukcy you ! If it is on a block explorer, you can not, since you do not own the private keys.

It was a private key, i found it in a forum.
Not in the darknet, in the clear Internet.

Don't be an idiot.  The money is yours.  It is not illegal to transfer bitcoin if you have the key to do it.  Having the key means it is your bitcoin.  Take it and transfer it to another address before another key holder does that. 

Not really, what i would do is to donate 39 BTC to people who needs it. Like donating to projects everyone use, but no one donates to, like UNOMP, BCOIN, and many others. I would keep 1 BTC as a reward for fair distributing the funds.
But the question is, how did you found a private key in a forum, with 40BTC in the wallet ? normally as it is existing since 2011, it should have been aleready emptied.

You can take it but be fast before somebody else take it because you founded that wallet in forum maybe it is already empty but maybe you will need to confirm payment via email so maybe you will not be able to take it.

It seems to me that kind of money on a lost wallet is something out of science fiction. Perhaps it is a new type of fraud. In any case, bitcoin is not recognized currency and a criminal liability you will not get. Try to translate into another purse and to remove.

I guess the OP has found the address which have 40 BTC and have the last transaction from 2011 and which tells us that the address was not used again since 2k11 and the owner must be from early adopters and lost hi faith in Bitcoins in very early stage and he lost his password/key/wallet etc.
And this user has found the address and wants to transfer the bitcoins to his address without they private key.
OR if he found an address with priv key then he is going to rich :p

Private key you sure or wallet.dat? if you are just get the privatekey and install it right now like in electrum you can get the bitcoin anytime you can send it,, if not if you use a wallet.dat and install like in electrum when you are sending bitcoin asking for authentications.

Somehow I don't beleive this story. You have found private key just like that, out of nowhere. And the wallet has 40 Bitcoins. If this has realy happened you would probably keep those coins not asking for advice here on forum. Or you would know that is not right to take other people's money.

Well, If you found the private key, then what are you waiting for.
If you found that on the internet so it means anyone can find it So cash it out before someone does.
You have the private key you are the new owner of the address.
Send the bitcoins to multiple addresses no one knows who are you ;) or use some mixing site.

Check the wallet address(es) and see if you can find something in the internet, if anyone has posted it and try to contact the owner.
Also check if someone has posted if he has lost the wallet or the private key of the address that this wallet has, I'm sure he will reward you.
If I were you I would give back to the owner (if he can prove it), just imagine if you lost 40BTC, what a bad feeling.

If you have private keys of wallet, congratulations, bitcoin is yours. You have the right to take these bitcoins, you are really lucky.
This address isn't used since 2011, I think owner from the first wave of bitcoin users and he isn't in bitcoin world anymore. But it's really strange that private keys was published on internet and nobody taked these bitcoins until now.

What is name of that forum I want check that forum and maybe I can found some account with bitcoins.This is not considered like stoling money because that money is losted because somebody forgoted for that wallets.

Even if this is not a joke, someone already took that bitcoins cause this private keys was publicly exposed. If the users saying that they found a private key with a considerable amount of Bitcoin in a forum did found them, here's what they should do in order to try and find its previous owner:
-Move the funds ASAP to a secure address that you control
-Post the address in several places, like this forum and reddit
-If someone says they were the previous owner of those coins, request them proof that they control the forum account that posted the private key

It will always be difficult to track the original owner of these coins. Even if someone does have proof that they own the forum account that posted that private key, it might not be the original owner of those coins.

Either way, this question was most likely related to moral dilemma of some sorts. In the end each one of us would do its own thing. I just posted what I'd do.

Found is different with steal. Found is legal, and steal is ilegal. It is same like you found a money in the street that wrapped by paper and there is nothing information like identity card to call. Then it's yours, and you free to do anything with that.

it is still illegal. who knows that one day, the owner want to take his bitcoins, but he finds it nothing. I just suggest you to look for the owner and ask for permission, or people who knows him. because there is also the other possibility why he doesn't take the coins, that is death. however, taking the other's stuff without permission is illegal.

I am agree that taking someone money without permission is illegal, even though is the owner mistakes that he/she put the private key not in the proper place, but if you took it then it is illegal, and to find the owner is a bit difficult because all the identity is hidden, but still I won't take the money even though it is very tempting

I wouldn't exactly say that donations are pillar of any community. Especially cryptocurrency community.
It doesn't' work like that, any form of donation is an optional goodwill manifestation and shouldn't be viewed as compulsory payment.
There is always that feeling of uncertainty when you have no idea how your donation is gonna be used. I don't like that.

Ive been in bitcoin crypto currency for quite a while but not even once that i found a wallet that has a 40 btc amount in it, must be the greatest day of my life if that would happen to me. But seriously how did you do it? Lol

I think the previous owner of the wallet must have added some second layer of security to it. So im im guessing you cant access it. Usually users in bitcoin wallets use some two factor verification for extra security but if that users didn't do much effort to protect his money then you must be lucky.

If the information provided by the op I true, then he is one among the luckiest on using the particular forum mentioned by him. As he has got the private key no need to think of anything just can make it his property. In the past more and more users losses their bitcoins this way without thinking the future. Likewise it too be someone's lost bitcoin.

Well there's no big deal here, you should go ahead and use it if it's usable-having the private keys. But if it can't be transferred then report it or try to find the owner so that you stand a chance for some tips if he so find you worthy. About it being morally right to spend or transfer I think it is so far as you've got full access to it.

I believe he had found an account that looks frozen but he hasnt the keys to acess it, soo it might be trying to hack and find the code, but as i know its a huge wall and the sucess is almost impossible, milions of combinatios possible to a single password, image if he put secondary and adress and 2fa, i dont know if at 2011 blockchain has those all already.

A bitcoin adress with private key and a balance of 40 bitcoin lying on the internet since 2011. Sounds too good to be true. But if it's real, then you shouldn't hesitate to transfer it to your own wallet. It's like you suddenly found a car with a key on it and it's document intact. You must be so lucky  :D

Just post the btc address already, that should be enough for them to see how it goes later.We will be able to check whether you have actually send the money from that address to another. 
The story of Craig having the private key of Satoshi's address isn't something people ill easily believe until he can sent even just one satoshi to another. Fake signature sign isn't the solution, its how much you can actually send. If you can send them all and if possible give some pennies to your audience here will be worth their time.

Look at the facts, the Op finds a wallet of 40 btc and then decides to come here to ask in the forum for help to decide it's right or wrong. How do i log into my btc address again on blockchain. I haven't been able to do that since yesterday and I didnt change my password. What could be wrong. I always get the confirm from the email with each attempt I make.

What is the error you are getting, if you are getting error as password incorrect then it means one you have forgotten the password or your computer got hacked and all your passwords are changed, kindly go through forgotten password procedure and if you are not receiving the email for new password then just think that you got hacked and no more you are having hold of your blockchain address.

To me it also looks very suspiciously. If I would be on his place I would stay silent. 40 BTC today is huge money to talk about this so simply on the net. Maybe he just didn't know what else to write and began this topic exactly cause of that.

Maybe he is honest person and wants to confirm if he can used those 40BTC which he found.  ;D      Its highly unlikely though. I also think that this is a fake story just for assessment purpose. Nobody can forget his 40BTC and then  find it suddenly .  :D

Well,just check the log-in confirmation on the email that have being used on that blockchain wallet account because its really normal for blockchain to request log-in attempt specially into a new ip address or browser.If you dont have that email address then that wallet isnt yours at all.

I do get the log in attempt confirmation mail in my inbox each time I try logging into block chain. But all that has still enabled me to log into my btc wallet

Once this dude gets his money, he'd realize there are lots of things to buy like a whole bunch of asic devices so he can mine himself after. You can take the money, if, you can fight your conscience, because taking all that 40 bitcoin and transferring it all on your bitcoin wallet is really not a good idea. I know that we needed money but taking it just like that is really not necessary because 40 bitcoin is not that easy to earn, it will take some time for a person to earn it, so, if you want money, PM whoever the owner of that bitcoin wallet, and tell him that you just found his bitcoin wallet address, and in return, because of your good deeds, who know he might give you 2 bitcoin. :)



I don't understand why you will need the private key, OP said that he found a bitcoin wallet with 40 BTC, so obviously, he already been inside that wallet and saw the amount on it, also, he can do whatever he wants on it. He will be just going to need the private key, if, he just have heard to someone that, that bitcoin wallet do have 40 bitcoin, so, if he wants to hack that bitcoin wallet, private key is needed.

If this is true, it will be the most outstanding scene in the Bitcoin world. However, I doubt that it can happen because it is hard for someone to forget about his private keys for 6 years
I think you should split them into two parts. The first one you should donate to some charity organization. You can use the second one for yourself but remember to use it wisely

You can't even attempt to say that if you have the opportunity to make $40,000 USD you'd just go ahead and donate $39,000 to people because you're such a wonderful person. That's just something us humans would never do, and with such a high amount of money it means that I would really never go ahead and do such a thing.

I love donating money to good causes as much as the next guy, but not that high of an amount bud, that's just you attempting to crave for attention.

And mind you, the wallet thieves are getting active once again, perhaps encouraged by the latest rally in the exchange rates. This may be fake. But I have a feeling that the OP is telling the truth. In 2009, the Bitcoin was worth less than $0.001 per coin (as per the exchange rates from New Liberty Standard). Someone could have mined a block and transferred a part of it to a personal wallet. Then he might have posted the private key in some forum. Back then, it was worth just $0.04.

If you have the Privkey to a bitcoin address then the basic principle is that you own the Bitcoin.  If i found it i would put it somewhere safe and would prob return it to the owner when contacted.

If thats the case then you really have a good heart since you are still willing to give it back to the owner but the real problem is that how will you locate him since we all know that its hard to trace him up and for sure many scammer will do their best just to say that they own those bitcoins.

Sending a message would be a lot harder for he'd be anonymous unless the owner send another coins with a message along it. I doubt people read those messages along with the coins being received.
A person who somehow got about 40k+ USD would likely buy a samurai longer than 2 feet to protect himself and the money. Would salute if someone really return the money but for now, OP's story isn't something to believe.

As for the 'scenario', consider for a moment, you find the private key for a wallet containing 40+BTC, what to do?

1.Take it, move the funds where you have sole control of key, then do whatever. It's yours.
2. Take it, move the funds where you have sole control of key, donate some, and the rest is yours.
3. Take it, move the funds where you have sole control of key, try to find owner, return if sufficient proof is given otherwise donate all.
4. Don't take it, and let the others claim the BTC and do what they will.

Most would do Number 1, Some would take Number 2, While those rare ones would do Number 3.
As for 4? Those are for the stupid ones, doesn't want to get involved, or truly doesn't care.

The coin was probably not 40 btc but possibly 40 satoshi. There are many people who are confused with satoshi and btc. They do not know that satoshis are small amount of bitcoin. Yes, it's online even now but I suspect the BTC must be withdrawn from all of those PDF paper wallets. Someone posted it on two forums and later posts were deleted from both forums but still, it is online on the third site.  There is a link of a zip file and a password, but it's better to stay away if we want to avoid the complications.

If you didn't any scam , fraud with anyone  , or you didn't steal the wallet of anyone then use it without any problem and tension .
Here it is clear that the wallet has last transaction in 2011 which is indicating directly that user of this wallet or address is no more able to access , so he left this one .
So use it without any problem and tension .And use it in better way to grow this amount of Bitcoin .
