Title: BFL charges before shipping! (+ a few reasons I think they're a scam)
Post by: Geremia on April 22, 2013, 09:43:38 AM
Do the Butterfly Lab's order numbers correspond to the number of orders? If that's true, as of 4/16, when I placed my order, there have been >42,000 orders. Thus, assuming BFL takes orders at a constant rate since they became popular a few years ago, >~15,000 orders have been placed that haven't been delivered yet. This is tens of millions of USDs!

On 4/19 they charged my card. Usually businesses charge when they ship. They can't possibly be shipping mine already, can they?

Another strange thing about BFL is that their https://products.butterflylabs.com/customer/account/ page doesn't use an HTTPS certificate that verifies their identity or supplies ownership information, thus people can eavesdrop on your orders and information.

they correspond somewhat, it is believed that the order number goes up regardless of payment status. therefore, there has been talks which speculate that a hefty % of the orders are in fact fake orders (where people just added items to the cart but never actually went through with the payment process).

They need your money for development cost. But if they have enought $, your order may be send next year most likely, would it be possible to charge so long after your order?

Oh yes, that's true. I actually have made two orders, but used the wrong payment method for one. I called them, and they told me to make another, as there appears to be no way to delete orders.

I think BFL is going to ship eventually - they have sold mining products before and they have sent out dev units that seem to work as advertised. Also the charge before shipping happens because a lot of the money you pay them is used to build the device.
