Nearly all countries have considered Bitcoin "legal" since they started considering it at all.

We don't need countries to "accept" Bitcoin as long as people can freely spend it.

In a free market, no country accepts it, all they do is regulate it or decide that it's a currency, and neither of those things means a lot.  Each individual merchant can accept it and that's only loosely related to the country.

They can take their acceptance and shove it up their arse.

Officially as a currency in an official place it isn't, but technically you can use it in whatever way since you can exchange them to actual currency i whatever place you would like to.. I heard about an inhabited island doing that but of course it's not actually used since there is no trading there anyway and is just a publicity stunt.

I do not remember this, but in recent times, Japan and Korea are the two countries that accept bitcoin. People in their own country really love bitcoin, their demand is very high, which is why the value of bitcoin suddenly increased dramatically. In addition, Russia is also preparing to receive bitcoin.

There are also Indians who start receiving bitcoin. But they all still do not say bitcoin as its national currency.
They merely recognize, facilitate the development of bitcoin and also receive bitcoin to circulate in their country.

Japan is almost the one and only that legalized bitcoin. Most other countries are not banning bitcoin (which include China and Russia) and just treating it as an asset-like item.

Any government that bans or prevents people from acquiring Bitcoin is power hungry and simply robbing their people of future prosperity. If this is you, quickly find a way to earn, mine, find BTC even if it takes relocating.

A lot of newbies here that probably are stuck in the communist era where the state and the country and the great leader is one and the same.
There is no country accepting bitcoins.

There are a lot of them who have recognized bitcoin as a form of money.
And even within those countries there are slight differences on how bitcoin payments are viewed and regulated.

But there is no country yet that has enforced bitcoin as an alternative to their currency.
So if your next door store doesn't want to accept bitcoin there is nothing you can do about it.

Once we get over this... then the real fun will begin

Yes I'm told Switzerland has also joined the list and it's surprising I didn't find India and maybe South Korea on your list because we are told their exchanges are charging huge sums for Bitcoin and so they must be paying taxes to the government and have therefore earned his support.

It can't be determined about how the total numbers of countries are accepting bitcoin right now. But there is a conclusion if a lot of countries are accepting it without an official announcement from the government. I said that Those countries were not determined the Bitcoin as an illegal or legal commodity. The bitcoin still on the gray area.
I mean all of the risks on bitcoin was becoming the user's responsibility.

Agree, but we are edging V E R Y slowly closer to more and more adoption
and the question is will any country ever recognise Bitcoin as legal tender
to compete with its own fiat currency.

I think the OP is using the wrong terminology, "Accept" or "Recognise"  ???

In my country, Mexico, the bitcoin is not officially recognized by the central bank (Banxico), that has recommended to the population not to invest in it because supposedly, since it is not backed by any formal financial institution, there would be no way to protect users from potential frauds. But outside of these recommendations, Banxico has never taken active actions or measures to dissuade the people of its use.

Except North Korea and just yesterday I was made aware Ecuador don't allow Bitcoins. Otherwise nearly all countries adopt it. Japan has taken a huge step by making it one of the legal payment processors, plus their airlines are to follow suit. Then just right now I have read Russia is to follow suit, however I am bit skeptical about this. You can use Bitcoins in swizz to. Meanwhile the Indian government has asked for a opinion on it, now outcome could be anything and it's to early to say where it could go.

Well when we talk about btc. Ya almost all country can adopt it but others may accept it discreetly. Citizens might be into it but the government really cant impose acceptance if it can be valid as transaction for goods or not. But if we talk about cryptocurrency, some countries are now starting to project its own cryptocurrency. Of course they would create there own cryptocurrency so that there economy can still be intact and they have there own to grow.

Recently? Well from what I have heard i think it's only Japan, and Australia. Russia is planning on legalizing bitcoin but it's apparently planning on tracking every single transaction on the blockchain as well to tie activities on the blockchain to users. I don't think that's good news per se, nor is it bad news. It's just like meh for me.

A lot of countries still allow btc trading to take place without acknowledging formally what their stance on btc is. I don't mind that either. Not banning it is good enough for me, p2p networks survive without any government.

Some countries did not say anything, would just go ahead and ban bitcoin completely. In the end their efforts are certain to fail, and if they weren't and the state could actually stop Bitcoin's growth then it would be worthless anyway.

As regards Australia, They are "recognising" the potential
of the tech industry surrounding blockchains and so they are
relaxing the double taxation currently involved with it now.

They want to attract more tech jobs to their country and see
the blockchain industry as being very important.

India might soon legalise bitcoins.

Yup, thats right, because of japans influence, and everyone know that its a great country, they also do the same decision as japan did. Since japan accepted bitcoin the last time, some other countries also did the same decision. Sooner or later some other countries will also adopt it and we are sure that bitcoins value will be on top again because many users will added.

I don't think so. Countries might not be able to control bitcoin or restrict the entire population to use bitcoin but they can put penalty to those who are caught using this especially countries with an intelligence in technology to block and trace some activities.

Though it is great if the cpuntry itself would officially announce its acceptance and regulate it. This will bring much more users and boost the price of bitcoin. Also you will have a legal approach regarding bitcoin if somehow there is unpleasant things that happen. By this, it will increase the trust to the people and embrace bitcoin.

Still there is countries that do not have any kind of law about bitcoin, it`s like they do not know nothing about bitcoin, or they do not know what to do with this new technology. There is countries that live on a edge of poverty and I do not know are people aware of bitcoin there. And I know that Japan legalized bitcoin, but I did not read how far that goes, can you go to some government office and pay tax or what ever directly with bitcoins? Or it`s like foreign currency, you need to exchange it first and then use it in Japan? Legalization always have background, and hidden little laws, I need to research that with more attention before I can make any statements, but for now I do not think that any county accept bitcoins directly!!!

Most countries around have accepted bitcoin, but very few have legalized it's usage within the country. This needs to increase, because on legalizing the people who fear of being one among the member of the decentralized platform too will start using bitcoin. In this manner we need to get more Countries similar to Japan start prioritizing for a sustained growth similar to the value assets such as the gold.

Countries around the world have a wide ranging view of the digital currency bitcoin or a “virtual currency.
We need them to realized that Bitcoin have a potential in the future. And Look Japan now their start to promote Bitcoin and soon to accept bitcoin in their airlines.

Yeah, some countries still believe that bitcoin is a currency used in illegal activities and can be used in money laundering. This thought need to be changed. This will change with time because most of the countries have already accepted bitcoin and this represents a good picture to all the other countries.

You're wrong, it's either you never read the news or barely visit any news site. So far, there's only very few country that accepts bitcoin and makes an official regulation for it. The rest just don't give a shit about the existence of bitcoin and will seem to only come if there's urgent of bitcoin that could threaten the country's income which is taxes.
Keep in mind that permitted to use bitcoin doesn't mean Bitcoin officially accepted and recognised there. See the differences.

Well, if you think of a situation where government would treat Bitcoin on par with national fiat currency and command every shop/service owner to accept it no matter what -
then you are right, there are no countries like that yet. But we have countries where BTC is 'legalized'  - Japan, and soon Australia.
As I know you can pay taxes in some regions of Switzerland with BTC too. The fact that BTC is not forbidden in most countries doesn't mean its usage is sanctioned by law.

There are no many countries who have officialy rehulated bitcoin and included it in their economies but in almost every country there is some bitcoin ATM or place where you can spend bitcoins, use bitcoins debit card or so. The most important thing is that it's not illegal so you can freely use it.

Previously you should know that Bitcoin is not published, authorized or regulated by any central bank. Instead they are created through a computer-generated process, where it is known as minning or mining. In addition to being an independent antadaddresser, Bitcoin is also a peer-to-peer payment system because it has no physical form and must be redeemed online. So Bitcoin is more suitable for cross-border transactions without the exchange rate. This condition also allows the user to remain anonymous. So many countries are refusing to make bitcoin legal

No countries have made bitcoin illegal which technically makes it legal, just not recognised. A lot of countries are currently discussing this matter and Japan has already solved it by making bitcoin legal and accepted in their country. Russia should also follow suit, especially after their most popular fast food restaurant, Burger King has started accepting bitcoin as a form of payment. More countries should also start recognising bitcoin as a form of payment. Even though countries haven't fully accepted bitcoin, it is easy to exchange bitcoin for fiat currency nowdays.

None of the governments of the world actually go forth and accept Bitcoin, they may allow it to be used within the country or just not be involved in regulation altogether over it but they still don't accept it for any governmental usage. You're not going to be able to pay your taxes in bitcoin, police fines, court fees, and so on and so forth. That's the big difference between a country ACCEPTING bitcoin as a currency and accepting BITCOIN as a payment for governmental usage. The government is never going to accept Bitcoin, the only way I could think of them thinking about is if they note that they could be making more revenue with Bitcoin and it isn't going to cost them more then the revenue being brought in.

In many countries there is no prohibition on the use of bitcoin. And this means that the use is allowed. And although it is not established at the legislative level - no one will forbid you to use this coin. I heard that Australia, too, was going to legalize bitcoin

Not many countries have deemed illegal, which makes it legal most of the countries, but some countries have officially recognised bitcoin as a payment method, while some countries have not really paid bitcoin much attention at all. A list of countries that I can think off that have officially recognised bitcoin, include Australia, The United States, South Korea, Sweden, Denmark, The United Kingdom and Japan. Very few countries are involved with bitcoin, which makes bitcoin lack the proper government backing to go mainstream. Russia will soon officially legalised bitcoin soon, and that may help, but we need all of the countries that are involved in the UN to support cryptocurrencies and make sure they receive the proper government funding and development to go big. Some countries are still afraid of bitcoin, since it is decentralised and they think, it may worsen the condition of their market, but we need to stop that.

Many of here are claiming that almost every country has legalised bitcoin as legal currency but I don’t think so. There are still many countries left to accept the bitcoin or even know what bitcoin means. Many Africa countries lacks the infrastructure of Information technology and are not aware of the bitcoin or any crypto related world. Hope there will increased number of countries pretty soon.

If you read CoinDesk article about Bitcoin Legality - Map of Regulatory Landscape
You can study which countries permissive, contentious and hostile toward bitcoin

snip picture

We hope in future more countries accept bitcoin, at least not hostile against bitcoin..
I find it very odd that a country like Iceland that basically gave the bankers the middle finger in the last economic crisis, to be so against bitcoin, it would seem to me that they should be one of the countries leading the charge against banks, does someone knows why this is the case?

There may not be many countries currently receiving btc and declaring their legality, but so far bitcoin users have spread across countries and made good transactions via trade and other bitcoin-related activities.

Most countries allow the use of bitcoins informally. A few countries have adopted it legally like Japan. Very few countries like Ecuador banned it outright. The thing is that most countries have no idea what to do about bitcoins and are yet to formally adopt or ban it.

Right now the legalized usageof bitcoin is found quite low in very few number of countries around the world.  Also the adoption took place in large scale by this year compared to the past years. Hope by the upcoming years more countries will start adopting looking the growth of Japan,  Australia and other few countries which are the early adopters of bitcoin.

Legalizing Bitcoin and not banning it are different things. The very fact that most countries are not banning Bitcoin is a great thing imo. Shame that there are still countries like Bolivia, Ecuador, Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh and maybe some others who ban Bitcoin use on their territory. Hopefully it's a temporal thing, until their stone age governments will be changed.

Recently there are many countries that accept bitcoin to see bitcoin as legitimate and accept payment by bicoin such as India, Australia, China, Japan, UK... The future bitcoin market will be wider. Future bitcoin will expand in Vietnam.

Yes, we need to focus more on those countries that take bitcoin. I can say that bitcoin is allowed in most countries. But unfortunately not all countries have the status of a crypto currency. This causes some difficulties and contradictions with the government and law

Yes, but it shouldn't be like that. Something as good as Bitcoin should be allowed for citizens to use and only a government which doesn't care about its citizens restricts the usage of that what they need. It's just a matter of time, Bitcoin will be legalized everywhere.

I think 90% of countries in this world using bitcoin and there is no restriction for Bitcoin users. So if some countries are not accepting Bitcoin means it will not effect on bitcoin economy. In future, they also allow their people to use bitcoins. But before that, some more countries want to adopt this Bitcoin.

I remember in the eraly month of 2017 I think february when the central bank in our country talks about cryptocurrencies and how they are going to regulate it. What you're saying is true, as long as there as no further announcement made by the government there is also no laws regarding on this matter and that's make you in a pinch situation when something bad happens because there are a lot of things missing in the system of Bitcoin. The right way in measuring things like credit risks and formal resolution in transacting  btc are still missing here.
For the meantime, I'm reaching the updates regarding on how my country will adopt to these changes. Right now I am responsible on all of my coins.

It is appropriate for the government to give freedom to its citizens to exercise their rights and there is no binding restriction on the rights of citizens. Likewise with the right to freedom to use digital currency crypto, unless it is indeed a criminal act of course there must be rules that limit it. So far bitcoin has a very good role in helping the economy of its users in any country they live.

There is no country which as a government body is accepting bitcoin payments. 0.

As for countries that have legalized bitcoin the list is on the wiki

Officially as a currency in an official place it isn't, but technically you can use it in whatever way since you can exchange them to actual currency i whatever place you would like to.. I heard about an inhabited island doing that but of course it's not actually used since there is no trading there anyway and is just a publicity stunt.
Actually in my country in the Philippines some banks now are accepting bitcoins as an exchange to real money. And I do not know what other countries are accepting it but US also are accepting it and not just banks but also some stores like fast-food chain. They are not accepting bitcoins yet when it becomes to payments and other transactions. But when you look at the other perspectives you can exchange it into a real currency which is they are accepting and that makes bitcoin useable.

In my country no Bank accepts for payment or exchange bitcoin. This can be done only through online exchangers. To be honest for me it's not a problem. I'm not upset if everything will remain as it is. The less the government will have a relationship to the freer bitcoin will be the currency.

These countries were strictly against Bitcoin but the recent stance of their local governments has shown a great shift in policy. There are many countries all over the world that accept bitcoin, and while this is a good thing for us, it is certainly a message for many more to start getting involved in its adaptation. I just don't see any reason for why countries should not show even a slight bit of interest in this matter, as I think it is very important for many citizens in the coming few years. Looking at many countries in the Scandinavian area, I have to say I am certainly impressed with what they have done. It is a good move towards the future.

I do not know exactly how many countries allow the use of bitcoin in the world, I think most are large countries with advanced technology to allow the use of bitcoin.

Now this is just some of the countries that accept bitcoin to exchange national currencies. Because indeed there are some intelligent people or people who understand about the technology that will boom in the future, so the bitcoin trust from there, resulting in a community and finally the birth of exchange that can help us more to earn easy money. But if indeed you want to exchange money might be able to use the site most recommend with money exchange to us dollars. i.e. btc-e

as of now it can not be told byt we can see that all country will accept it in future as technology modernized and huge amount of people used it.
I do not really know what are the exact countries who are accepting bitcoin as a payment. But it does not really matter, because i know that in the future bitcoin will be accepted by the government and will make a legal currency. And even for now we can still use bitcoin to buy things but we still need to convert it into a real cash.

Most countries allow the use of bitcoins informally. A few countries have adopted it legally like Japan. Very few countries like Ecuador banned it outright. The thing is that most countries have no idea what to do about bitcoins and are yet to formally adopt or ban it.
This is correct but the good thing is that bitcoin are not like drugs so the chance of a big front forming to ban bitcoins is lower since bitcoin is not damaging to people like drugs are  and as long we have countries that legalize it then everything is going to be fine.

On top of the list of such countries is Japan, Russia and India I think. No country is accepting bitcoin as an official currency as far as I know, You can just exchange it through tons of methods local and international to the local currency of the currency, naturally countries usually don't accept anything but their official currencies, exchanges can do any...

Some country doesn't want to forget what the fiat are. Fiat contains some history or some knowledge about history so they didn't want to forget it because a person who are in fiat have an value what the country it is.

If you mean the formal regulation og Bitcoin then just the few countries have done that. In Europe I'm aware of Netherlands and UK. But you van use Bitcoins in any country at merchants or services who accepts it, no matter it it's formaly regulated or not, this shouldn't be an obstacle.

Yes for official recognition by the government may still be small. But for widespread use I think everyone in different countries has tried to use bitcoin. Even in countries that have not adopted bitcoin has been found a company that has an important role as an exchange. So in my opinion, doing bitcoin adoption legal and official in a country is waiting for time.

Don't have a certain data on how many countries did recently accepted bitcoin. What's the most important to me is on how they are going to manage to make the popularity of bitcoin stable on their places. Even they will accept bitcoin but there's a lack of promotion then their citizens will never know that they are already into crypto.
bitcoin has become a world famous currency and the price of the bitcoin is increasing with time as it was being use in some countries at huge level and in some countries at low level but now in a lot of countries bitcoin has achieved the legal prize as in new York bitcoin is accepted as a payment of school payments and in a lot of markets of china and Japan bitcoin is acceptable.

I think acceptance is just a small influence on the price of bitcoin, besides the local central banks and people in the country have to trust and see bitcoin as something of value like gold. Then the supply and demand will begin to form and lead to bitcoin prices will grow

I guess recognizing some currency is almost similar to making it legal. If government is allowing public to deal in bitcoins, that means they are making it legal. Japan is one of the countries having highest number of bitcoin holders, so there government is sooner forced to make it legal if they have not yet. Just like India has recently made bitcoins legal.
