Title: Which RX470/RX480 RX570/RX580 GPU for my first 6 GPU Ethereum mining rig?
Post by: Morpheus26 on June 04, 2017, 03:23:00 PM
Hi there,

I can get these cards now or within the next 3-5 weeks.
Pretty much everything else is sold out here in Germany.

Which one would you get (with order if possible since I am not sure if I can still get each one by the time I have collected some answers - thanks)?

I plan to buy 6 of the selected cards for my first 6 GPU rig for mining Ethereum and SIA coin via SimpleMining or EthOS.

470s:
GIGABYTE Radeon RX 470 G1 Gaming OC 4GB (GV-RX470G1 GAMING-4GD) - for 178 €
MSI Radeon RX 470 GAMING X 8GB - for 231€
Is the MSI worth the 50 € price difference compared to the Gigabyte?

480s:
Asus AMD Radeon RX 480 Overclocked 4 GB GDDR5-RAM - for 255 €
Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 480 Nitro 4 GB GDDR5-RAM - for 263 €
Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX 480 G1 Gaming 8 GB GDDR5-RAM - for 260€

570s:
ASUS ROG-STRIX-RX570-O4G-GAMING - for 233 €
SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 570 Pulse 4GD5 - for 208 €
MSI RADEON RX 570 GAMING X 4G - for 209 €

The only 8GB card is the RX480 G1 Gaming but not sure if it does make such a difference.

The price for the RX470 G1 Gaming is actually pretty good I would say, but I have no idea which one would be the best to overclock memory and underclock core to squeeze the best out of each card and which card has the best ROI in terms of price to mining power/power usage.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
 :)

Now took everything you can :D
They are mostly all same, only some has better cooling than others...
It more depends on memory brand.

With "same" do you mean in terms of price to performance?

I know that the memory brand is important but as far as I know the memory brand can only be determined after I have already purchased it, right?

I did some research and they say go for 480 or 580 instead of 570:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLPjo6qLw98
They even say go with RX480 (if you could actually get them) over RX580.

The RX580s seem to be a bit better if you dual mine.

Exactly right. I'm using Asus STRIX RX 480 with 1150core / 2222memory clock and get 27,5 mh/s as using Claymore's Dual Mining with -dcri 9.

Also working on 55-65C with autofan.

Memory clock increase mh/s more than RX 470/570 and also reduce electricity consumption more than RX 580.

Hello:

The prices you quote for these cards are quite reasonable. How are you able to source them at that price? Here in U.S. these cards are all sold out and aftermarket prices are 2x - 3x the MSRP!

Goodluck finding those mate. While you were designing your rig other have already cleaned out the shelves. There are no more 470/480/570/580 globally.
Lets just hope Chinese manufacturers will do the good thing and not hoard all those Hashes.

To Answer your question my picks for you are.
MSI Radeon RX 470 GAMING X 8GB

I will also choose that brand for the RX580 as well
From the discussions those 4GB, for ETH  will no longer work by Q1 2019, thats 1.5years from now.

Thanks everybody.

I think our shops are supposed to get new cards on the 8th and 16th of June.
So would you say I should wait and then get a bunch of 570/580s or just still try to get everything I can get my hands on like the Gigabyte RX 470 Gaming OC 4GBs that I still might get for 177€ a piece?

But how about value when you resell them after you upgrade. Would it not make more sense to get 570/580s instead of 470/480s since the 570/580s will most likely be sold easier later on.

Since RomeoXak mentioned that the 4GB models will no longer be able to mine ethereum from Q1 2019 on - would you just get the 4GB models that you can get and mine with them until they die or you upgrade the cards or would you specifically try to get 8 GB models if possible?

And like I said if everything goes according to plan I get these on the 8th of June:

Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 570 Nitro+ OC 8GB - for 254 €
Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 580 Nitro+ OC 8GB - for 288 €
Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 580 Pulse OC 8GB - for 289 €

And from the 15th of June on maybe this one:
MSI AMD Radeon RX 580 Gaming X 8GB GDDR5 - for 319 €

Which one would you go for with the price difference being just 34 € to jump from 8GB 570 to 8GB 580?

I think it's worth the extra money for the 580. The cheaper models usually use cheaper memory. The 580 Nitro+ uses 8000 MHz memory vs 7000 Mhz for the 570 Nitro+.

I have several Sapphire Nitro+ RX570 and RX580 both in 4GB and 8GB. Dispite what I've read elsewhere before ordering, they ALL have Hynix RAM.

The best value and lowest power consumption are the  RX570 Nitro+ 4GB. THe 4GB at stock settings mine slightly faster than 8GB while consuming less watts.

The RX580 4GB at stock settings is 0.75 hashes faster than the RX570 4GB but for more watts.

I've yet to mod the BIOS on the cards to see how well they can perform but I suspect the performance ratios will remain the same.

My recommendation is get the RX570 Nitro+ 4GB.

The latest word is ETH will not go to POS all at once, but will use a hybrid model similar to Dash at first. The main problem with the 4GB cards is you won't be able to dual mine effectively once the dag goes past 3 GB early next year.

That makes sense.
So 8GB it is - except I can get still some of the 173? MSI RX 470 4GBs - then I guess I build one rig with them and wait for the RX 570/580s supply update to buy more cards for the other rigs.

Just updated my post with this, since I found 2 more suppliers:

So you would say definitely invest a little more 30-50€ per card to get the 580s over the 570s everytime?
The reason I ask is because I am not sure that the 65€ price difference between the Sapphire RX 570 Nitro+ OC 8GB and the MSI AMD Radeon RX 580 Gaming X 8GB can be made up by the MSI card in terms of MH/s. As far as I saw all these cards get around 28-30.5 Mh/s when modded.

Although I'm new at this, I personally wouldn't buy the RX580 if the equivalent RX570 were available. Nor would I get 8GB if a 4GB model is available. The performance is so close that you're better off getting more cards for the same money. As far as future proofing your rigs, you will be buying new gear in 6 months anyway. Just get the maximum number of cards mining ASAP.

BTW. The only reason I purchased a mix of everything is because that is all there was. Every is New Zealand is now sold out for weeks, perhaps up to 2 months. Fortunately I was able to get what I needed even though it meant buying some RX580 8GB cards to fill the rigs.

The difference I was referring to is between the Nitro+ 570/580. For long term I would go with the Nitro+ 580 8GB, ~30 €/card is not that much more for a single rig. It's a better card and will have better future resale value. Between the MSI 8GB and the Nitro+ I would go with Nitro+ 570 8GB. I don't have any but lots of miners like those cards and I've seen good results with them.

One nice thing with the Nitro+ cards is the BIOS switch. Should make it harder to brick if something goes wrong when modding the BIOS. Not sure if the MSI have that switch.

Thank you guys. I really appreciate your input.

Now some of the cards that were supposed to arrive Thursday have been moved back 2 weeks. Crazy.

Now I am searching on ebay.
How much would you pay for and when would you say it is too much - because I guess it comes down to waiting until new supply arrives or pay more on ebay:

RX 470 4GB
RX 470 8GB
RX 480 4GB
RX 480 8GB
RX 570 8GB
RX 580 8GB

Now we are finally getting somewhere.
After calling more than 10 shops yesterday I got a clear answer from one of them:

The will get 30 Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ 8GB cards in July 5th - so in a month.
The sapphire nitro+ cards are supposed to be good as far as I can tell from doing research on different forums.

Each card will be 339€ which is $382 and quite a lot in my eyes.

Now I guess since I just start out the real question is:
Should I just preorder 18 cards so I can at least build my 3 6 GPU rigs beginning of July latest or would you just preorder 6 cards so I can finish my first rig beginning of July for sure and then wait and keep my eyes open until then to see if other shops might get 570s or 580s in until then for a better price? What would you PROs do in that situation?

Again the goal is 3 6 GPU rigs to start mining as soon as possible.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

Since UK is still in the EU you can always return them in 14 days or cancel the preorder if you will have better price.

What do you mean? Do you think I have better chances to get a card in the UK?
I highly doubt that but if you have a link to a shop that does have cards - by all means please send it to me.

Sapphire was surely cheaper, I would say 30 % cheaper, for MSI I can not find a reliable price history, in some shops it's available for 400€. Prices in European countries does not differ much. But the price history does not help much.. In terms of making some returns with mining, is a expence of 300€ per card (MSI) or 350 for a Sapphire card, good or not?

Following this, as I am also looking into building my first rig.
Are you taking in consideration the possibility of bios mod the cards when choosing which card to buy?
I have found tutorials explaining how to bios mod a Sapphire 580 Nitro+ and getting about 30MHs on ETH, but haven't found tutorials for other manufacturers, like ASUS or MSI.

I have found tutorials explaining how to bios mod a Sapphire 580 Nitro+ and getting about 30MHs on ETH, but haven't found tutorials for other manufacturers, like ASUS or MSI.

It depends on memory vendor not card mostly. If you have Samsung memory and good card quality you can have 33MH/s. But it can be 29, if the card or memory is bad... From my view RX 580 Nitro+ is not the best option, lot of Hynix, those are tricky, but yeah you can have 31MH/s.

I've preorder RX 570 Auorus for $200, they now listed it for $230 :D I hope they will delivery my order for my price :D

Thanks for your answer! The RX570 are fairly cheaper here in my area when compared to 580. Do you suggest going with the 570 then? Can I hit 30mhs with them as well?

Thanks!

There is a lot of talk about the GPU brands etc but what about the other components.  If I wanted to run SIX RX 580s sapphire 8gb what kind of motherboard/PSU/memory/cpu would be recommended to be capable of handling all 6 cards?  What are you guys using in your rigs?

Well, there are so many options out there that is difficult to say. One can't say "Buy Asus model XXX" simply because so many others works just fine.
You need to do a bit of research.
Maybe you wanna buy a mobo with the newest Intel chipset? Maybe you don't...
Obviously you need to make sure that the mobo you're going to buy has at least a mix of 5 PCI lots and 1 M2, or 6 PCI slots, or 4 PCI and 2xM2...
And, for a CPU, I'd go with the cheapest you can find, like a Celeron that fits the architecture of your mobo (generally 1151)
4GB of ram is nough.
PSU will depend on how many GPUs, but generally 850w for 6 cards should do the trick. But, again, you need to check which GPUs you're buying and how much they consume.

Well Like I said I have ordered six Sapphire RX 580s 8gb.   The reason  I asked is because miners aren't like a gaming rig.  I don't need to configure it to suit my complex gaming needs.  I need a miner that just works when it's switched on.  Surely I don't need to research dozens of motherboards?  I just need a solid suggestion for 6 cards.   I used an ASrock H81 Pro BTC R2.0  for my first miner (Six RX470s) but I am hoping there is a better board for my second rig with six RX580s

I am not sure why I would need M2 slots,  are they SSD related?  I have an SSD on my first rig but it's just connected via sata.

I have one more simple question, according to this chart https://etherscan.io/chart/difficulty is the difficulty skyrocketing..  Are those online mining profitability calculators reliable? Is mining profitable?

I have purchased 2x MSI Z170A Gaming Pro mobos. They should support 7x GPU each.

I can get my hands on 10x Nitro+ Rx 570 for 2500€. Good or bad deal? I am still new to this and what I still don't get is the dependence of the Mhs to the memory. Is it that Hynix is the best, then Samsung and then Epildec (idk how this one was called),... What about Hyper Fury. I have read that this is good as well.

Sorry I am just confused can someone clear this up for me?

Frankly just take the cheapest, differences are not that big. Just make sure that it is not a mini version. But at same price, Sapphire is the best brand according to me. MSI is also very good, so take your favourite. No, in facts MSI is better, but always more expensive, so take Sapphire.

Hello,

If i buy a GPU from the Type Sapphire Radeon RX 570 NITRO+ 4G
What is the hashrate what i can get with bios editing only with tripe copy and adjust the Memory Speed and other power Setting, without special custom timing

Best Regards
Willi

You should get about 29 mhs on 570 with oc (and possibly bios mod).

Has anything changed since the last post?

I can choose between these cards for ~350-400$:
RX 470 4GB
RX 470 8GB
RX 570 8GB
RX 580 4GB
RX 580 8GB

What would be the choice, ordered from best to worst? I can also choose between different version of these cards, what should I look for when comparing them, memory clock?

I will go with only 2, maybe 3 cards.

Is there any better card in that price range?

According to this calculator https://www.nicehash.com/profitability-calculator NVIDIA GTX 1060 is more profitable than those cards mentioned above, and I didn't see anyone recommends it for mining.

Since nothing has been posted here many months now, I would like to input some as I am going to build a rig. I am currently on the researching mode and here are some amd based gpu that I found to be worth it or in available supply (rx470 or rx480 are hard to find in brand new condition these days):

rx570 8gb
rx580 8gb
rx vega 56
rx vega 64

Of all listed above, my choice for a mining rig would be the rx570. That's because the the price is lower while its hashing power is not that far behind with the rx580. rx vega series is nice to have, but the price is too much for me. But if you have the money, the vegas are the best choice.

For the motherboad, my choice would be Gigabyte GA-H110-D3A since it is designed for mining with 6 gpu. Plus the price is affordable.

Nowadays, if you have the money, the rx vega series are very good choice. On the other side of this hardware competition, I think the gtx1070, gtx1070ti, gtx1080, gtx1080ti, p104-100, p102 are the only best choice.

By the way, I compute profitability using this calculator https://crypt0.zone/calculator . I hope you'll find this one convenient too.

And now: I believe this is all beautiful if you got very cheap or free electricity though.  ;D
