Title: Are there people here from 2013 who are not millionaires now?
Post by: cryptohunter on June 05, 2017, 08:29:40 PM
Who is here from 2013 who is not a USD millionaire at least on paper?

I bet noone here from 2011 is not a millionaire.

If so what were your big mistakes that prevented this from being the case?

** edit

don't take from this post that I myself claim to have attained that millionaire status .... but then my early trading was an example of how not to trade. Im guessing the majority has done far better.

let us not let this thread turn into a sour grapes situation....but it is nice to know many average everyday people have now made life changing amounts of fiat due to crypto. I feel millionaire status is within grasp of so many that are here even recently.

let them enjoy their success and inspire us all..
If they made it by buying fairly on the market or mining fairly then it is great to know that so many have done so well.

are you a millionaire?

most people from back then are not millionaires. most people panic. others gets bills. most didn't have much to start with. others were too stupid or sensible to throw it all in on alts. even if they are millionaires from alts, it's paper profit until they cash in.

Is this your way of subtle bragging? Of course there's lots of people from that time that aren't millionaires genius  ::) If you had $1000 USD and your coin went up 100x guess what, you're still not a millionaire.

50% are automatic losers by default. This accounts for majority of the non-millionaires. We certainly do not belong in this topic just wanted to give some personal insight. Buying and holding for 3.5 years was how we became millionaire status and our experience show most don't buy and HODL but instead play the gambling/p&d games. Those last crowd amount for roughly 50% of the losers. The last 50% fall into the "I am going to have a Lamborghini" aka the "get rich quick folks", these people are repeat losers that never learn how to invest and make wealth. Thanks for the topic!

Looks like i am writing in a thread of a millionaire who spends his humble time in this forum. :P just to tease others to show his millions  ::) .You have to invest wisely and another thing is holding it for a much longer time,i did invest in ETH when it started and sold off when i was in profit,i never imagined that the price of ETH will be anywhere the price it is now.

I am a moron that allows real life to interfere and cash out always before a spike! How are you supposed to know the DAO is going to get bailed? The dark Markets are going to pick up a coin?

The millionaires are those that were well off enough to not have to cash out for periods of time when bills needed to be paid. Money begets money and it takes money to make money the poor are at as much of a disadvantage here as anywhere else. Although the scammers do seem to have it easier here and I'm sure most of them are rich.

Been involved in bitcoin since 2011. Cashed in too soon. When it hit $20 I thought it was too good to be true and sold all of the several hundred I had mined to that point.

After that I didn't pay attention to bitcoin or altcoins for several years. Finally last year started getting interested again and bought some Dash at around $3/coin. Made the same mistake as before - sold when it hit $16.

Investing in several more coins this time and won't make the same mistake again - holding until I get at least enough to pay off my house and all other debts.

I guess all the guys that traded marihuana for BTC and did not cash out - or only cashed out a bit are superrich. Read an article in 2011 or so about a Collective in the Netherlands that baught Marihuana legally  - sold it over the web for BTC and shipped it. And they where all committed to hold it for at least 5 years. Would be interesting to hear from them now  :)

What are you even talking about bruh

In 2013, Bitcoin started at $15 and now it peeked at about $2700.

This means it became 2700/15 = 180x as high.

So you would've had to 1,000,000/180 = $5600 to be a millionaire right now... And you would've had to resist the panic seller feeling, and the peaksell at 2013 and you would've ofcourse needed the 5.6k... In 2013, I would've probably thought, with the increase of less than a cent to $15, the $15 price was just a peak and it would sink down again later on... You're stupid if you think everyone here from 2013 is not a millionaire...

2011 is a whole other story. Bought for $0.30, sell at $2700, it would be a 9000x increase, so you would've had to invest only $110

You do not need  to buy Bitcoin in 2011. You needed to buy only video card to start mine it.

As a famous Wei Dai did. He just spend 170$ for ATI video card to get his six digits right now. He are still one from view who not panick sell adn etc.

Also he wrote a lot about how this could be possible in future and why he is the one who get millions from nothing

Here its really very intresting. He is the one who is millionaire now.

http://www.weidai.com/

Also Vitalic Buterin is an earlier adopter of Bitcoin.
I know he is genius boy and very talanted programer and Ethereum creator.

But even without Ethereum I think he still would be a millionaire now, because he really was 1 of the first who started to mine and adopte Bitcoins.

I started with no capital, worked up my accounts on cryptsy and mintpal and a little on poloniex. Cryptsy took me for 3 btc and a lot of other coins. I worked up to 15 or so btc but sold a lot too soon at $1200. Sold a lot of my alts right before the alt bubble because I wanted to get my money off the exchange. I made money but could have made a lot more. I couldn't get ethereum to work enough to gpu mine it so I didn't think it was going to be successful but I still made a little eth, us dollars and btc off it, maybe $1200 worth total, evenly split between them. sold 495000 dgb at 34 satoshi for a not quite break even trade just to get out of poloniex. I think by the time eth was just getting going I had alt coin overload because I was investing wrong. I switched to more in and out day trading and now more and more markets isn't such a bad thing.

I do not know if many members are millionaires even if they have been in bitcoin for that long, if you bought bitcoin for a dollar and then bitcoin raises to 20 dollars would you not be tempted to sell? Because I think that almost any person with blood in his veins will consider selling and get that many profits, only those that were real believers on bitcoin have hold for so long.

In 2013 I got 30,000 ripple and sold it for about $600 and some bitcoins on the ripple platform but I think my biggest mistake was just not investing in the coin like I really wanted to. I am disabled I still live from check to check even from back then. I was trying to figure out a way to stretch it which I did, but if I really had the assets I would have been able to invest when the coins were really cheap and I should have never sold them.

what I don't understand is why you posted this question in an altcoin board!

you do realize that bitcoin is the only cryptocurrency that has gone up big time in the long term, right?
and all the altcoins have been rising in the past few months only, and as a repetitive cycle kind of thing they do this every year where they are pumped to big percentages profit and then there is a slow agonizing death while they continuously go down the rest of the year.

Same here! Bitcoin always has been and always will be great. I sold at the unbelievable high price of BTC20 that was unsustainable per the chatter. It allowed me to pay medical bills and even shot BTC10 over to theymos that I think was used to patch the board software. No regrets. Welcome back to both of us btcboston. ;D

crypto millionaire? then for sure there are some specially on earlier years not only on bitcoin but also on other cryptos and if theres one who would speak here then its a good thing to know his past experiences and perspective on cryptoworld. being a millionaire is once in a life time case which do most people do wish of to happen on their lives but we should not forget there are past mistakes of traders which is the reason that not make them as a millionaire.

Holding indefinitely = millionaire?

I started dumping hard in late 2013 / early 2014.
Since then i'd be lucky if i had / have $100 in coins.
I could use that to trade but what ? ICO scam coins ?
No thanks.

When the crypto scene changed from flaming the ICO concept to actually defending them i quit.

I was here to be a part of things and that was not the destruction of crypto for whales scraps.

I joined bitcointalk in December 29, 2013 but not yet a millionaire maybe because of inactivity and concentrate in faucets and give away which I just dump when those coins hit the market, which so many coins I dumped in my early days I don't know what coins are those that could have made me profit, yes greed is your big enemy here and patient is a virtue.

Oh, don't get the wrong impression. It has always been denominated in BTC. I am 80/135 on the list and think BTC was in the low 20s at the time. Soooo the majority on the list were just early adopters chipping in a bit to keep the board running. Theymos deserves huge props for years of unpaid efforts.

It will be hard to see someone who has a stack of bitcoin in 2011 and still have same till today. Only a few can hold their faith that high without losing it and that's why its going to be hard getting someone who haven't either sold everything he got then orarge percentage of whatever he might have gotten then. When we compare the price as at then and now, we just jump into the conclusion that owners then would have been super rich without considering the fact that several challenges have happened along the way to get to the point where we are and only a strong heart will still hold not knowing what will happen later.

Not even close. I made a few thousand in crypto, but that's it. I got into it 2013, and I was either underemployed or unemployed from then until last year. I never had much to invest. I bought into Ethereum at the initial offering, but I only had $20 to spare. So I bought 60eth for $20. I also considered mining Bitcoin, or buying Bitcoin when it was $5/coin, but I just didn't have the funds for mining gear or to make a substantial investment.

I'm sure if I had had real money to invest back then, I could have done a lot better.

You can be a millionaire if you hold it for long. VERY LONG.
CAN YOU SLEEP IF YOU HAVE $100.000 in bitcoins?

If you have $10.000 on your BTC wallet, many people withdrawal their money.. Don't you?

1 year later you have $200.000 in your BTC wallet?
- still not a millionaire but do you hold your wallet or withdrawal?

You don't know the value tomorrow..
maybe 2 months laters you have just $50.000 or one million. So you can lose $150.000.. You don't know!
many people withdrawal their money before being a millionaire.

Uhh...I've been here since 2011 and I can pretty solidly say that I am not a millionaire.  I'm not destitute since I have a pretty good job outside of this, but I'm not a millionaire and that's despite having a pretty good income from my regular job. I told myself I'd buy more bitcoin when I got a high paying job but when it actually happened the price of bitcoin was tanking (down to about $200) and I got too scared to actually go through with my plan to buy $3000 of bitcoin a month.

The rest is just a combination of having actually spent almost all of my bitcoin when it was worth about $8-100, and having invested bitcoins in mining hardware instead of just holding onto the coins-by the time I got the mining hardware it was impossible to mine back the coins spent.

I was also a very broke med student in the early days so I had no money to invest anything and basically could only buy new hardware by selling the coins off.

But that said I recently finally bought the second crypto I've ever purchased, which was a little bit of Qtum during the ICO and at least on paper it's had a pretty great run.  We'll see what it's worth in a year or two, probably all dependent on if this altcoin bubble pops or not.

But man oh man, so many threads I've been in on here where I came SO, SO close to buying in.  The original NXT thread I got scared off by all the posters saying it was a scam.  Ethereum I got busy during medical residency and forgot about the ICO until it was over then I didn't feel like paying 50 cents each lol.  NEM I read the thread too early when it was still an NXT clone and didn't end up finding out about the new structure until recently.  Many times I've failed at becoming a millionaire.

But I can't complain too much, I've made a lot more than I would have if I had never invested in Bitcoin, and I did cover my medical school loans in the end with how much it's gone up. =)  And who knows, if this crazy market keeps up maybe in a year I'll be a millionaire hahaha.

Your case sums it up pretty much. I've been around bitcoin since the incredible pump in 2013 but in my opinion this scene is full of 'could've, would've and should've. There are so many cases where I though damn that's an interesting project but then one way or the other you fail to sit out the ride.

Bought in to NEM but took a sabbatical after bitcoin tanked in value during the same period and thus missed the chance to claim my stake. Saw the ether announcement and was really excited but missed that one as well due to the same break.

I think the majority of people that actually became rich are those that bought in to something (bitcoin or alts, doesn't matter) and just forgot about it for a year only to come back and see they're suddenly worth 500k. Then there's a group of people that became rich by chain-releasing new coins off.

Anyway, not complaining, made a fair share of money and it's still an exciting ride.

Holding is definately the strategy to go for..

I think there are lots of people who got into crypto currency at 2013 that are still not a millionaires,
Why because they needed the cash so they would convert their coin and also we all know that back then we don't even think that bitcoin would be this high.

The common denominator in many of these stories is that we need to buy and hold if possible to do so. I met someone a few weeks back that purchased 6,000 shares of ETH at 30 cents so he invested about $1800. Unfortunately he needed to sell the shares when ETH was around $10 early in 2017 to raise the funds to purchase a condo. If he had still been holding these shares they would be worth about $1.5M at current prices, which is clearly life changing capital. That was a painful sale and will not be forgotten what could have been if he had only held on! It isn't always possible due to layoffs, illness, paying for weddings. Life just has habit of throwing expenses at you.

I am trying my best not to sell 20 bagger positions like which Verge comes to mind in case they continue to run, but the temptation is very strong to sell with any huge gain since those 10 to 20 baggers are so rare with stock market investing.

I am the *ONLY* smart one here ..so listen the fuck up.

When you invest in something and you do not get a return ?
The more time passes the more of a loss you are incurring.

A simple way to look at it is you *could* have invested in something else during the waiting period and thus the lagging time consuming investment is actually incurring loss.

So sitting on a shitcoin for 4 years waiting is retarded faggotry when you could have simply sat on BTC and tripled your money for example.
Of course there is idiots who sat on Dash for 4 years then BINGO struck it rich.. but it was 100% pure dumb luck by accident.

You all should be very embarrassed because i am not educated and have no previous trading experience and am not very smart at all.

crypto millionaire? then for sure there are some specially on earlier years not only on bitcoin but also on other cryptos and if theres one who would speak here then its a good thing to know his past experiences and perspective on cryptoworld. being a millionaire is once in a life time case which do most people do wish of to happen on their lives but we should not forget there are past mistakes of traders which is the reason that not make them as a millionaire.
Seems like the only mistake they make is selling too early

Holding indefinitely = millionaire?

Holding can be fine but trying to do trading and investing can make more income.

If you were an early adopter holding for a very long time could make you millionaire but the problem is that is not the strategy of most users, most users like the thrill of trading and trying to outsmart the market, if you are able then cool but for most people that is simply not possible and they deceive themselves thinking they will be able to do it.

I'm not. :(

I heard about it in v0.3, from the first Bitcoin announcement on Slashdot.
I would have been buying $100 worth of BTC a month, before the first spike.

Unfortunately, I only had access to Paypal.
No one here trusts that, and nobody selling bitcoin lived near me at the time.

Yeah , here I am the one who didn't yet became millionaire and working hardwork in the Bitcoin field from 2013 .
Since I started my job with the Bitcoin in the year 2013 but my serious investment in this field was started in the mid of the year 2015 after the scam.of the hashocean.com ( cloudmining site ) .
And after that I started my trading and made the investment in the Bitcoin and from.that day I am making a small amount of the money with the Bitcoin ( which is sufficient for the my life to live easily ) but still I didn't get that amount of money which can make me millionaire .
All over here is only my mistake , I was able to do something much more better then what I am doing because I lost much money in the dead coins and in hyip sites and gambling also .
Well here I have 1 btc currently in my wallet and now thinking that I will become millionaire atleast in the year 2020 ( according to the price prediction of the Bitcoin ) .

If there are those millionaires, they are sitting on their own island drinking cocktails and not here to answer.

if you arent a miner then  its a zero sum game. someones gain is someone elses loss. i think the quote is the best answer so far. interesting responses here though, i had assumed the same too that there were lots of millionaires but clearly human emotion impacts even the best hodler.

You can't assume that people just held through all these years. I've been using bitcoin since 2010 and i'm still a pretty broke bloke. The worst thing i did with my savings was to buy in at 2013 near the ATH only to sell it at $200 apiece a year later. Absolute stupidity if you ask anyone right now. But things looked grim back then, bitcoin was still in its early stages and didn't have many believers. If i held these coins i still would have doubled my money which is crazy if you ask me.

I got into crypto in early 2014 and i am not a millionaire. However i have come pretty close. Lets just say the value of my crypto holdings is greater than 500K. I invested less than $5,000 so i think i have done pretty well. The only reason i am not a millionaire now is that i did not have more capital to invest back in those days.

I remember in 2013 people were making posts like these claiming that everyone who invested in 2009/2010 was a millionaire. The reality cannot be further from the truth as it takes a whole lot of extraordinary circumstances to work in your favour even in you invest in the right crypto at the right time. There was a guy in 2010 who spent 10,000 BTC to buy 2 pizzas, others spent their coins on gambling sites. Even satoshi was handing out BTC left, right and centre back then.

Oh you seem to have a good gut feeling for picking coins up at the right time - so what do you invest in now? :P

Since it's the weekend, probably beer  ;D

This is why it is a minority of people from 2013 that are millionaires, most people sell off long before having a net worth that high. You can call it short sighted but why would you risk tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars if you can take it out risk free.

This is correct, those that bought back in the day, probably took the earnings they could and then they sold, nothing wrong with that but only those that truly believed in bitcoin or that were very intelligent investors will keep their coins for this long and I’m sure even them have problems holding at the moment since the temptation to sell at these prices are without a doubt something to take into consideration.

Many people came from 2013 are not becoming millionaires at this current year since of the people used to grab more btc at that time already sold their BTC for their own financial needs ad maybe those who became millionaire's unto it are those people who forget that they have balance in their wallets but this matter is so rare since there are no claimnants that they become rich for staking since year 2013.

The chances of becoming a millionaires2 from altcoin purchases are very easy, but for those who can keep their altcoin on hold it can make sense, since long-term purchases can profit them more than 100% if they grow altcoins from 2013 to 2017 now, They not only have the chance to become millionaires even they have the opportunity to become a billionaire

We build our own economy and felt like crypto pirates, we invested in ponzi schemes (Pirate *haha*) and thought that we are the kings of the world because we had unbelievable interests.
We used Marketplaces who brougt us into difficulties or were closed by governance or frozen by banks or marketplaces who losed our coins (Mt. Gox).

We learnd it by the Hard Way, spended a lot of BTCs for nonsense because it was cool to pay with BTC or lost them because we were to stupid to follow some simple rules.

As the price was 60 USD i dropped all coins a had, because i cant imagine that it gets higher.
I lost more then 20-30 BTC with Scam, of course if i keept all the btc i had i would now be a millionair.

According to my analysis, someone new to criptocurrency finds it hard to be a millionaire because of the lack of knowledge and information. In developing countries. As for those that already have results in this case BTC / ALT Coin else. They prefer to be consumed instead of investing in cryptocurrency ;D

From your logic, you only needed to be from 2016 to be a millionaire, no need to go back to 2013 when bitcoin was pretty flat.

If they had a good amount of bitcoins and held to this day then they are millionaires but the truth is not many people have the patience to hold for as long as it was needed to become millionaires, also what could to stop them to hold even more and become even richer by just holding for an even longer period of time.

When it hit $1100 i sold and ran.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D. I'm trying a different strategy this time. But I dont know which is worse, spending 10 000BTC on pizza or losing a hard drive with $13 million USD worth of BTC. Given the choice, I would chose eating that darn expensive pizza any day. lol

This is quite an informative thread, its nice to see peoples experience with crypto since the early days.
Its also a pity to hear that people also cashed out "early" but I suppose a value of $20 could have been
a massive profit from the initial earning of 1 BTC.

Hopefully the future will throw up some Karma for all.

There are also lessons to be learned from reading this thread, some of which can be applied to the current volatility.

I hope they cashed out, but if they don’t then I think it is time, I do not think we are going to see these prices and big market caps for much longer, I do not see a big and good enough reason for the price to be that high at some point a major correction is going to come and when that happens it will not be pretty for any of us.

Here since 2013 and not millionaire, not even close. :D

I made some really bad investments, lost my coins and my motivation, been slowly collecting for the past years and with the recent rise my net value increased a lot, not a life changing amount but it's getting there.

I believe the vast majority of people from 2013 are not millionaires, specially after April 2013.

It depends the correction can benefit you since you will be able to buy all of those coins at very cheap prices instead of having to do it at the current prices which are very high at the moment, but you never know the correction may happen in a few months, years or maybe there will not be a correction and these are going the prices we are going to see before the next raise.

Lol in fact you did exactly like me. I lost almost everything and I decided to buy a few SDC, then I left a few years and came back with some good profits :)

Indeed for those who came at the beggining of 2013 must be more lucky.

Basically it goes like this. In any goldrush some strike it Rich, but a lot of People dont get to be Rich, and some even lose Money on the big bonanza. Like in the good old days there are those who are guarantied to make a mountain of cash and that is the firms who supply the equipement, and this time around that is AMD and NVIDIA. Whether you make Money or not on a GPU minable coin/coins. AMD and NVIDIA wins either way  :D :D :D :D :D :D

I am not from 2013 and of course, I am not yet a millionaire and I have to work a lot to achieve this prize. Crytpocurrency will definitely help me and make me become rich someday. Otherwise I can do other jobs to improve myself and become better in the future so that I can earn a good amount of money everydaay

Im curious but when did this forum open?  Also when did lot of people spoke a lot about bitcoin on the forums like now?

To the people that said if you bought 1 btc for 1 dollar each and then it goes up to 20 dollars, wouldnt you withdraw some?  Sure of course many people would.  But the thing is why would you withdraw it if it keeps going up.  Correct?  Thus if it is hot, then why would they withdraw unless you need the money etc.

Im also curious but how hard was it to acquire bitcoin back in 2009 and 2010?  Was it easier in 2011?  When was bitcoin sort of mainstream?  I remembered i was on a poker forum and someone mentioned about bitcoin and said it would be the next big thing.  This was around mid 2011 i recalled and i believe i looked at it and it was like 10 dollars maybe.  Of course i thought it was some junk and ignored it etc.

Also im curious but how many people here had a lot of bitcoins back then but then either sold them or used them?  Were there a good amount of people with like 500-1000 bitcoins or even more and then sold it or paid for stuff with it?  Because if you had the 500 bitcoins now... that would be around 1 million dollars now.

Were there lot of ppl with like 1000 and up bitcoin?  Was it pretty easy to get or even get for free etc?

Bitcoin went mainstream more or less in 2012, of corse you could buy it before that, but it got much easier in 2012. Beyond that Bitcoin started to be what it is today With ATM's and shops accepting the coin.

I am resurrecting this post purely because it was very helpful for me. I hope many newbies will learn from other people's experiences as I did. DONT spam the post signature scammers please.

Here is what I learned:

1) Never think you can predict prices buy selling with the hope of buying later.
2)Noone can outsmart the market.
3)If you fall into hardtimes and use your bitcoin, then as soon as you get back on your feet, replace the number of coins you had not the value of $ you had.

Millionaires became a small part among those who had bitcoin in 2013. Most sold bitcoins at the end of 2013 to $ 1000 and more. And who did not sell, in early 2014 he sold $ 600. A small part of those who could wait for 2014,2015 and early 2016. Congratulations to those who are still hold.

There are plenty of people who should be, but many sold out too early or just simply made poor trading decisions.  It can be easy to go wrong and hard to go right.

are you a millionaire?

most people from back then are not millionaires. most people panic. others gets bills. most didn't have much to start with. others were too stupid or sensible to throw it all in on alts. even if they are millionaires from alts, it's paper profit until they cash in.

and those that are theoretical millionaires now arent able to invest that money because real estate and industry developers will not take them serious

I think Andreas's revelation a few days ago further illustrates your point. Unfortunately even to day are still falling into the very same trap

your thread makes it sound like you think it's too late to become a millionaire now. Just because you made some wrong choices before and didn't hold doesn't mean you can't learn from your mistakes and make some picks now and just hold and leave it there until you are a millionaire. I havent' been around since 2014 only since 2016 but i am doing ok on paper out of this so far but like you i made some rookie mistakes at the start mainly by day trading and ending up stuck on a few bad coins. I should have just held some main coins from the start and i would be a millionaire. but i know this now and am holding 3 really good coins and waiting.

Figured I'd post a 2021 update. After this post I HODL'd pretty hard. Had some stuff I probably shouldn't have HODL'd that hard including those Qtum, but overall those lessons we learned paid off I think.

I hope the rest of you in this thread from 2017 did well HODLing. Here's to more years of HODLing for all.
