Title: I was buying ripple and now I got SCAMMED
Post by: zero3112 on May 04, 2013, 10:13:17 PM
I am looking to buy 24,000 XRP for 1.37 BTC which is all the bitcoins I currently have available right now. I can buy smaller amounts I guess but I want to trade my 1.37 BTC in the end for XRP.

The exchange rate will be 1 BTC = 17,518 XRP

For any new users who got 20,000 in the XRP giveaway if you don't want your coins I will buy them from you for 1.14 btc for 19,800 XRP since you can't send all of 20,000 XRP out of an ripple account.

PM me if you have any XRP you looking to sell
NOTE: I only have 1.37 BTC so I can't buy more then 24,000 XRP.

He didn't have a scammer tag before so it was hard to know once I got scammed I reported it right away and he got a scammer tag but before that there was no way to know if he was a scammer.

We did a escrow but it looks like escrows don't work he ran off with the coins.

Edit fix:  John K. was not the escrow. The scammer sent fake forwarded escrow messages.

Holy shit, I WAS NOT THE ESCROW damnit. OP got a PM from foofight stating that I was escrowing the deal, and sent the coins to the address foofight 'forwarded' to him blindly. I escrow around 2k BTC PER WEEK and it does not make sense that I would run for this amount.  >:(

This signature is fake, right?

Below are the original contents of the personal message which was reported:
Message forwarded.

Attached. Please note that I might be going out soon for lunch (in approx. 10 mins), so please proceed with sending 24,000 ripples if you see the 1.37BTC having 3 confs in the address below. Be rest assured that I will be releasing the funds when I get back.

The escrow address for Foofight(the seller) and zero3112(the buyer) transaction would be:

1FMkokNtu7oQyjwaYcM5wDQG9VUN4hUBMb

Please state and agree to the conditions (if item is received damaged, item lost with tracking, customs fee etc) beforehand.

If possible, GPG sign your agreement to prevent any discrepancies later on and please ship with tracking to prevent problems during delivery. GPG signing is not a requirement, and any verbal exchange in the form of private messages or posts on bitcointalk.org, or email is effective as a ‘statement of condition’.

The fine print:
This Contract is solely generated for the purpose of facilitating the transaction between the seller and the buyer, which refers to the pseudonyms used on bitcointalk.org.
The escrow holder, John, assumes and gives no liability or guarantees on the satisfaction of all parties involved, although he agrees to mediate and facilitate the deal to the fullest extent he is capable of.  On the event that any problems arises, he will release the escrow to whichever party that presents him with the most convincing proof and/or after an open discussion with others or theymos.
The verbal acceptance by both parties (or the failure to reject) and the sending of Bitcoins to the escrow address above constitutes the acceptance of the terms and conditions stated, and the activation of this Contract.

Please understand that I am assuming the risk of holding the escrowed Bitcoins, and I am using my own time to facilitate this transaction.
If possible, please tip me at 1NB1KFnFqnP3WSDZQrWV3pfmph5fWRyadz .

Thank you.

.... You don't understand how escrows work, don't you? You need to verify that it's the escrow you're sending the funds to. Hell, I GPG sign every escrow contract I send out, be it 1 BTC or 1000BTC - if the signature is wrong IT ISN'T ME! In this case, you didn't even verify if it was me who sent you the escrow contract directly via PM.  >:(

GPG signatures are for the security of the users involved - I know most people are not verifying that the signatures are valid, but it makes sense when you're dealing with 1k+ BTC. Also, I send the contract out via my account directly... that would be the baseline to confirm that I sent this contract out.  :-\

Well, PM before you send the coins next time, as the coins are effectively lost if you've sent it to the scammer's address.

How do you verify if anything is real then.  I guess its best to never sell or buy bitcoin and never use this worthless currency what good is a currency where you get scammed and there is no recourse. I can never really buy anything with bitcoin without the risk of being scammed from the seller.

Your right it is pointless.  Just quit.

I am sure wordpress or namecheap are just building up to the massive scam of stealing $10 worth of BTC from you.

Trade with people you trust.  If you don't trust someone use an escrow YOU TRUST (and no that doesn't mean blindly sending coins to the address the person you don't trust asks you to).

I've actually used John's service twice the past weeks and paid for merchandise with Bitcoin. I made sure John sent the messages to me, and it wasn't forwarded to be my the persons I was trading with. I mean, by your logic, you should stop using "email" because someone could edit the forwarded email.

There is nothing wrong with Bitcoin, John, or the forum. The problem is with yourself and the scammer. We aren't the reason for you calamity. I hate to say it, but Bitcoin doesn't need people like you. If you are technically incompetent, perhaps you should further study trading and Bitcoin before getting your feet wet. Or pick another field altogether.

Someone should make a post, and have it sticky.

1. How to verify GPG signatures.
2. How to sign and verify bitcoin signatures.
3. How to get a public key from a keyserver or a webpage.
4. How public keys and private keys work in GPG or PGP.

Until you can do all that, there is no point to attempting doing any transaction.

It's really simple: If you can verify the signature, you are sure the message was really from whoever sent it, or whoever has access to the private key. Most people who have GPG installed are careful about their computer systems so they don't get compromised easily.

It's really simple: If you can verify the signature, you are sure the message was really from whoever sent it, or whoever has access to the private key. Most people who have GPG installed are careful about their computer systems so they don't get compromised easily.

Thanks this is needed and I would greatly appreciate such a post.

Anyone who doesn't get along with GPG should try gpg4usb.
It's portable, works on windows and linux and it has a GUI very easy to understand.

Thank you for once you post something helpful on my threads.  No more sending anyone coins ever again learned my lesson.  GPG is another step to being secure its very important to learn.

Would using bitmessages rather than PGP-signed emails be more user-friendly?

Yes I think it is because the user only has to give you 36 character address which acts as there address that you send messages to and public crypto key for encrypting and sending them messages.

Where as PGP you have to know there email address and a separate public key that is 100+ characters
