If you are traveling and lose your credit card, but in a country that has a reasonably active Bitcoin scene, you can sell some BTC to pay bills while "over there".

This may become an issue for us.  

Here is a case for having an online wallet, "travels anywhere".

Having a bitcoin is a privelege , if we had a bitcoin we already have the curency for the future . And bitcoin for more more years will be likely to increaae its value more.

There are many advantages of owning bitcoins like this one, however still many of the people are not aware of its advantages yet. Online wallets are not that safe like offline wallets but are very useful in these type of scenarios.

As I know you pay bills through online banking and if you loose your card the first thing you have to do is to block your bill. So, you can't pay your costs with bitcoins, if only the place does accept bitcoins directy.

With current transaction fees it's not really worth to pay for some "small bills" since the fee will be like 50% of what you are paying for.

Don't we all have our online wallets secured by 2FA?  If so - better make sure that when your credit card gets stolen they don't take your phone/yubikey or what have you also!

Problem with online wallets are not that only are less secure its that you are putting your money in someone else's hands so you have to trust company hosting the wallet in the first place

imo this is a nice use case, cool to have transferrable online cash everywhere. But you do have to remember the key or secure it somewhere online, which is a drawback

Their are online wallets, such as blockchain.info and airbitz, that give you exclusive control of your keys.

If you lost your card, you need immediately contact your bank to block card, not bill.
Blockchain.info don't give control of private keys.

You would need to find someone there on that country buying Bitcoins and giving fiat instantly on your hands.

Only good if there were a trusted exchange house, something like this offering this service, because it's too dangerous to trust a stranger to do this transaction, you can give your Bitcoins and he won't give you any $$ back.

But we can only pay if that shop is accepting Bitcoin, even though the country legalized and accepting Bitcoin that doesn't mean all the shop is accepting bitcoin, the implementation of Bitcoin for shop is still too little, so for now we can't depend on Bitcoin, but in the future I am sure we can live by only using Bitcoin

What if you were also going to lose your smartphone along with your wallet. What can be your options? Unless that there would be an atm machine that allows you to log in using your keys however this is to dangerous so what would really be the option?

I don't think I will travel with just only credit card. It's a risk and everyone knows that. It's just a backup and not my main tool for spending. I have to bring some cash too.

Also I doubt that even in a country with active bitcoin scene, I can see services are just around. Still a risk to just rely only on credit card and bitcoin as only used for my spendings when I do travel.

Yeah Bitcoin is great when it comes to situation like that. Of course the country would have to have Bitcoin legal before you can do such things, but Bitcoin is still a lifesaver here.

I mean it does not have to be an online wallet does it? You could use your hardware wallet or offline wallet if you bring your device. Why compromise the safety of your Bitcoin by entrusting all your funds to some dodgy online wallet like coinbase, when you can ensure safety with your hardware or offline wallet?  ???

I would just take my hardware wallet with me while I travel. After all, it didn't get the name Ledger NANO for no reason. It is convenient and portable AND safe too. I would never trust my Bitcoin funds with online wallets.

It is a good way in case of emergency, but how could you use your BTC in some restaurant or in a hotel? maybe with a card that use btc or something like that! a Bitcoin bank :D

Yes it is a good reason to have some bitcoin and you have online wallet but the only problem you may encounter even if you have bitcoin and you lose your credit card if the country you visiting accept bitcoin or you are clearly remember your password through it, so better save some writings on your notebook or notepad in that way you will be saved. I agree. The good thing about bitcoin is that it is like an international money for all of us. One that has bitcoin can go to places without necessarily exchanging his current currency to that his country destination is using. For as long as he has bitcoin he can go there immediately and if there no stores that accept bitcoin as payment then he has just to exchange them to the country's money.

better have paper wallet, in that case you truly control everything and travelling with a piece of paper with some "nonsense" written on it is easy. you just put it anywhere and nobody can ask you why are you taking 1 billion dollar out of the country ;D

One of the best things about bitcoin is that it does not discriminate against countries. You using bitcoin in North Korea compared to you using bitcoin in the USA, as long as you have some sort of internet access, you'll be getting the exact same product.

Losing a credit card is something that is a real possibility. By carrying cash around in certain countries you have a high chance of getting robbed, and it's just inconvenient. With bitcoin, everything is done at your fingertips. Even in small countries there will be bitcoin traders on localbitcoins willing to take your bitcoin for cash. It's quite a sound backup plan in my opinion, just in case something unexpected does happen on your trip, you dont have to waste money on foreign exchange again.

That's a big plus. Especially when you travel to a bitcoin friendly country, you can actually leave out your credit cards or cash and use only bitcoin. So no worries of losing anything when on travel either.

The solution for that is to use a third party wallet service such as Coinbase. Transfer between Coinbase wallets can cost as little as BTC0.00001, and the transactions are instant. I am not favoring Coinbase in anyway. We can use any similar service (BitPay is another one).

So far as I checked the all online wallets Coinbase default fees seems little better than xapo, blockchain and others. By default they consumes 0.00087 btc as transaction fee. I agree Bitpay wouldn't have this much fees but your transaction will be completed in a 30 minutes.

I think you have not written completely, but what I can understand is that you mean that be it any place, any time and you are out of Fiat you can use Bitcoins. Well it will depend country to country not all have accepted it as of now. Then I hope you have not forgotten the fees, this days I have to put all the transactions on the back burner because of the dam fees, I miss the good old days where there was no fees. Your idea is nice, but currently it's not globally adopted.

i think you haven't really been making any transactions lately or "these days" becuse if you had you could have seen that since the spam attack stopped last week the mempool has been empty and the "good old days" are practically back and the low fee and extremely low fee transactions are also getting confirmed.

Does it really need for bitcoin to get legalize before you use it? In my country, bitcoin is not really leagalize thouhg there is no law that opposes it but we could still use it anywhere. We can convert it to fiat from our hardware wallet. But what's not good is it takes an hour before you get to cash out your bitcoin. It can help as long as you dont need that bitcoin quickly.

One of the main advantages of bitcoin is that you can use it anywhere. You are not restricted by borders like fiat, you don't have to declare if you have bitcoin because technically you are not carrying it on your person.

Keeping just a little bitcoin even as an average person would prove extremely helpful if you were in a situation where you need immediate access to cash, for example as you said, when you lose yoru credit card in another foreign country.

And pretty sure you don't need to be in a country where bitcoin is widely adopted, basically every country has bitcoin traders and you can always hit one up on paxful or LBC.

Well, this is definitely one of the upsides of bitcoin which has allowed for it to grow into what it is today, and also what is making cryptocurrencies look much nicer and conveint. I would totally recommend keeping a couple of bitcoin just in case your wallet gets stolen overseas, so you can still use money with bitcoin. Maybe in the future bitcoin will be more widespread so anything can be bought with bitcoin, instead of hassling to exchange your bitcoin. Even in small countries it should be possible to sell your bitcoin for fiat making it super convenient.

Even i am having plan for travelling some country which really having bitcoin atm and Mining (May be china) . I keep my bitcoin for my travel expenses . It was my first priority to hold bitcoin for travel expenses. Its really one of the best upsides of bitcoin.

Oh definitely. That's my plan B whenever I'm abroad. So far I never had to fall back on it though.

in real life i don't think if someone who lose his credit card will think about fees, if me i will do anything to fix it immediately so i can get out from that problem. ( in case if lose credit card problem )

the best reason would be when you want to go to a country like Japan which has about 260,000 merchants (last time i checked) who are accepting bitcoin. and that means you just walk around with your encrypted wallet on your phone for example and pay for anything you want with bitcoin, fast and easy and without the risk of someone mugging you in the street! they would just get your phone not your money.

this comparison doesn't make much sense you can also lose you know... your wallet and your bitcoin

Bitcoin Might be a global currency but I think that thought of yours is not applicable for now in certain countries, what if OP is from other countries besides the USA that have a privilege in using bitcoin anywhere the states, but I think in some countries they can not use their bitcoin directly that is why he is converting it into Fiat money first before he can surely use it, well we both do the same first before we can surely use bitcoin for payment in what ever we would like to buy or pay bills in certain situations.

Yeah I also think so that bitcoin don't need to be legalize just to use it in your country like as long as you can convert it to fiat that will be alright. I don't like laws and regulations for bitcoin. We all love bitcoin the way its decentralized, everyone is hands off to this.

Bitcoin is gradually being used in the travel and tourism industry, more options for booking tickets to accommodation are now available through bitcoin, but still there are many services a traveler might be not be able to get using bitcoin unless you are in Japan.

Using bitcoin instead of cash or cards for traveling has a lot of advantages, no need to worry about misplacing/theft cash or card, avoiding card fraud, no exchanges. Hassle-free traveling experience.

Yeah, bitcoin can be used as a back up if you end up losing cash or card.

In our case, having BTC (both hardware vulnerable to loss AND an online wallet) is our "Plan D" (the Scouts always have said: "Be Prepared").  We have cash, another credit card, an ATM card, and have already advised our bank re the problem.

YES, for BTC to work as described, the country you are in has to have someone to accept BTC...  But as cafucafucafu wrote, some creativity can help a lot...

This is really an advantage when bitcoin is already been accepted mostly on many countries which we dont really have a problem when we do travel even though we dont have cash on our pockets as long we do have our online wallet or any other wallet that do contain bitcoin would already do since we can cash-out anytime and anywhere we want.

Many people think that if you have cash, gold or treasures in your hand, it is better to own a bitcoin. When to go somewhere if need money to sell can sell immediately to have cash consumption. Bitcoin also does that but it's better because when you own bitcoin its value can rise higher than it originally was.

I really like the aspect that you can take the bitcoins anywhere on a USB, or just send them online.. Thats prettymuch what made me interested in BTC

There are multiple good qualities owned by bitcoin technology. In which, the best one, we can take and transfer bitcoins to anywhere in anytime.

But,the transaction fee is now getting reduced from last week and also transactions are confirmed quickly with even very low fee.Spammers have started leaving the network who were responsible for delay of confirmation of transactions.Now,we could expect the same lower fee which we earlier paid.

At the begininig people wanted to have some Bitcoins because that was something new and different and also the alternative to traditional finances so Bitcoin owners were cool.

You are right but right now there is only limited option where cannot able to use bitcoin for purchases. It will take some time because now every country starts making bitcoin as legal currency so might be a huge chance to own some bitcoin.

If you did lose your wallet and even your phone although you have an online wallet which might carry some emergency funds if you are security conscious you will no doubt have 2FA setup via an app on your phone which would cause an issue when trying to access your wallet as you have lost your phone.

indeed sometimes bitcoin can solved the problem just like OP says and one of the advantages having bitcoin instead of cash is you do not need big pocket to save your bitcoin although there are some issue such as the fees or the speed of transaction but in the future maybe people more likely to use bitcoin rather than use paper money

Nobody has bills with a value of 5$ to pay. In the opposite if you have a 100$ bill to pay and you're currently travelling you don't care to pay let's say a $2 fees. At least for me. Not to say you can pay lower than that

I watched a vlog before where the guy can't use his very own debit card just because he's in a different country. He's already back in our country before the bank has contacted him and they said that it was a suspicious transaction because it's coming from a different place than usual. Oh well, if he wasn't with his family, he would've died of hunger there. The banks should have a partnership with the airlines so they know which country the person is currently in.

In bitcoin, this will not happen to you. You simply have to look for a guy that buys bitcoin and there's plenty of them apparently. Go to localbitcoins and look for people. You can also do a transaction in the bank so you can have the money checked if it's legit.

I don't understand why the people here are arguing that you can't use bitcoin to pay for anything. That's true but you simply have to exchange your bitcoin to the local currency. When you try and travel with US dollars, which is the most known fiat currency, you can't also buy anything from a foreign country. You also have to exchange your dollar to local currency first.

You can easily carry your bitcoins in your mobile, with a simple BITCOIN WALLET app. No interference of any bank or external machines, it's all under your control, in your smartphone.

there are many other good reasons to own BTC. I can make bitcoin payments, also can do the transactions within few minutes at minor fees. And, the most important, easily can shop with the Bitcoin anywhere in the world.

The only reason that i know that is very important for me is to earn a lot of money or be rich with bitcoin. If you will have some bitcoins in your investment portfolio then after at least 10-15 years you can encash it to purchase the necessary things or to buy your dream items like house, cars and different things that we don't expect that we can buy.

This is really true, there are many advantages on having an bitcoin. As you said you can use your bitcoin when you lose your money if you are travelling or if you are just in your city and you forget your wallet and you need to buy something really bad. Bitcoin makes our life convenient especially the market price is high and we can buy more or save it for the future. This thing is a good idea. This is how bitcoin works and help people especially who are in need or in times of need. Actually every where you go you can access bitcoin thru internet like online wallet example is when you are in philippines you can access their local wallets, get money from you online wallet then send it to the address that the local wallet gives then convert it to fiat money which you can now able to spend it. But it is when you use online wallet at all but in some other ways i do not know how.

This is a very good possibility, but it still creates problems for users. I think that will ever be possible to create a multi-currency Bank cards that work all over the world and translate bitcoins will be straight from the e-wallet.

That's the beauty of bitcoin. With fiat currencies you are somewhat restricted by countries borders because a lot of countries do have extremely strict border control and it is pretty much impossible to carry around $50,000 or more in cash unnoticed. But with bitcoin, you can carry it anywhere you like in the world because nobody can detect it, and it proves to be extremely helpful if there was ever a need arising from an emergency for some cash, for example losing your traveller's cheques or your credit card.

Though the US is actively trying to get a new bill passed in Senate to restrict people from travelling with over $10,000 in cryptos. Even if this passes, though which it probably won't, it would be impossible for border security to enforce this law.

Bitcoin is very useful in case of emergency, we can buy something around the world, that bitcoin is accepted as means of payment.

Actually there are many reasons to have BTC. But very important reasons I am going to mention below -

1. Bitcoin is the biggest invention of this century
2. Bitcoin is decentralized, Open source, Secure and Transparent

I think these two reason are sufficient to have BTC. But still price matter. Day By Day price of Bitcoins increasing exponentially. This can also be good reason as Investment.

In countries that do not have bitcoin, there is no way you can use bitcoin to pay for them unless you change bitcoin to fiat and pay for the services you use.

and almost all the countries have some people buying and selling bitcoin, at the very least you can go on a website like localbitcoins and sell your coins there.
or you can even go and sell your bitcoins to any internet currency such as paypal, perfectmoney,... and then sell those to local currency if you couldn't find a place to sell bitcoin directly.

When you hold bitcoin you don't actually hold anything. All you need to do is remember your wallet identifier and your password(in blockchain.info's case) and you're set to travel anywhere in the world cardless, cashless.

It is probbaly still more convenient in most countries to use their native currency than to use bitcoin directly to buy goods, though. So i would say that until bitcoin achieves mass adoption, people should try to still get their hands on a bit of local currency just for the sake of convenience.

Yes that's true. But it also depends on the places you are traveling. If you are into some trekking adventures, some off-places, places that are quite different from city-life, then some local fiat is really necessary.

True. Or to be honest you can probably travel just on bitcoin right now. Credit cards charge way too much for fees overseas and the conversion fees are extremely high compared to interbank rates as well. When using bitcoin you might actually get some discounts due to the fact that many countries have strict capital control especially in Asia(Korea, China, etc. you get the picture).

Wouldn't that be quite fun? I mean, it just ultimately shows how useful bitcoin is especially when you're overseas, because bitcoin is an international currency, much like preciosu metals. It's not owned by any state.

Having some BTC is a good thing because the future money is in your hands. Anyway i think in the future bitcoin will still increase its price and eventually it will become more popular, thus having it now and saving it for the future is a good reason. THats why lets continue to support bitcoin.

According to my online wallet I have. Can only be used for widraw at local bank. If I travel outside the country. Maybe I will have trouble with paying bills. I think before you travel outside the country you can widraw first bitcoin you have so you have enough money to pay bills

I am earning bitcoins by doing signature campaign, my skill work tasks for bitcoin and participating in social media bounty and other giveaways by the Altcoins, though this way i am earning bitcoins and some i convert to fiat currency to expense it and balance i keep for future support.

It can be used globally as a currency and would be even better for big groups and big capital firms to acknowledge it.

For an urgent needs, we can convert digital money into liquid cash in less time. Not only that, we can use bitcoins for personal usage or any purpose without any restrictions. Security is also high.

I agree with you, we can easily cash out our bitcoins into fiat money because we can do it using the internet only and not like other currency that you need to go to an exchanger of money to be able to get the fiat needed in your country. Bitcoin can be also a money to purchase things online which is very convenient for a person who just want security and also good payment system at the same time.

Travelling on just bitcoin would be pretty much impossible at the moment in certain countries, you're probably not going to get any sort of premium for your coin. But on the contrary, expect to pay a big premium for the fiat currencies.

Unless you know the local people there, do not see bitcoin at least right now at some sort of way to avoid carrying cash and credit card around. Obviously, this will change as more people accept bitcoin around the world but it is currently just too impractical to be exchanging $200 in btc countless times p2p just to pay for food and accomodation.

There are other ways as well, but not as convenient as online wallet. i do keep some BTC in online wallet for spending purposes. one day all the stores across the globe will be accepting bitcoin payment(i'm waiting for that day to happen).

Yeah the idea of Bitcoin credit card is being thought of for a long time, there are really projects to develop that idea to come true. I think the uses of Bitcoin credit card is really big but the idea of crypto currency credit card should be on some else Alcoins which is optimized for daily payments that can be used with credit cards.

A hardware wallet will do the same for you can carry it with you while you travel anywhere. Plus the security is good and your bitcoin is safe. I bought my Ledger Nano S and it does the job.

Yes you're right.Bitcoin has really an edge over the others.We can use bitcoin anytime and anywhere as long as we have our bitcoin wallet in our android phones.Having a cryptocurrency like this makes our life more convenient.There will be less worries and fears whenever we're on a travel and no pocket money brought.

I wondered how helpful it is when that happens to be true.  But another good reasons is the increasing of it that is really unbelievable. It is a good way of investment nowadays. It is our future, our future currency or maybe the business currency.

he is not talking about "bitcoin credit card". that actually would be a silly thing to say the least. if you want to go through a third party aka a bank then stick to fiat, it has less volatility and possibly less fees than bitcoin cards.

Great reason you got to have bitcoins in your wallet. But besides saving it for long time to become millionaire, there are many other outclass advantages of this international digital currency. It’s a great backup for paper money. Paper money is more threatening to life than bitcoins. I will prefer to have as much money in bitcoins as I can afford.

I do expect a lot in the future to bitcoin. Because I started to use bitcoin when the price is lower than $500 and now it has increased 400% and even 500% last time. I think the good reason to own some bitcoin is you are financially secured. When you ran out of fiat, you can just simply get out and convert to cash your bitcoin.

The economic situation is unstable all over the world but the value of bitcoin is not strongly correlated neither with the stock market nor national currencies.

At least in some parts of Europe there seems to be an increasing movement to get rid of cash. The trend is increasing in many developed countries where digital payment methods have high adoption.

What is that you are trying to tell,do you know that the price of bitcoin is over $2000 and what do you mean by to reach the value of real money,do you want to see the price going down or what.  :P @ OP i do not trust online wallets one bit as you never know when they will go offline and run with your money,so i am always careful with these things.

Yes. The price really exponentially grow in the last couple of years. So its really nice to own at least 1 full BTC in your wallet. Its has really a lot of advantage like you mentioned and I think more people are going also using it that way. Maybe down the line bitcoin price can double and even triple so you get a good ROI. And the more people are demanding bitcoin, the more the price could really soar high in the future. So I will continue to get and accumulate more bitcoins.

The mere fact that there are only a few active countries which has an active bitcoin economic scene makes me want to save more cash if in case I would ever want to travel. Or I can use my debit cards and load them up with bitcoins if in case I get lost and no cash on hand. That would be more promising.

This is really a big idea , and this is not new but it is type of understanding of you don't have money . Actually I am from India and was traveling for the another state ( Gujarat ) but in the train I got cheated by theif and stop my money and have nothing in my pocket .

Re above comments on various countries and situations involving liquidity, yes, of course some countries make it much harder for a traveler to use BTC.  But, in some countries BTC is rather liquid.  I did not mean that BTC solves all problems, but that if anyone travels extensively, it is yet another reason to have some handy.

You are right. It happened to me once when I forgot to my wallet and   what I only have is my smartphone. Luckily I didn't transfer all my bitcoin in my Ledger hardware wallet and left a few bitcoin in my online wallet. I just withdraw in the ATM and didn't jeopardize my activity that day.

It's possible to do that cause you can easily exchange Bitcoin into local cash although Bitcoin is not legalized in these countries as long as it's not banned. For example in my country Bitcoin is not legalized but I still can exchange it into cash very easy in everywhere in my country so I'm planning for my trip with Bitcoin only

Actually, you can already use it. I had a problem once when I was abroad. The solution I found was to sell bitcoin. I had cash in exchange and could go on with my travel. Quite practical indeed! ;)

Well, to do that, you should find someone to buy your Bitcoin (in a foreign country, that wouldn't be a piece of cake), and he must gives you fiat directly. So that's pretty hard.

I save the bitcoin so that one day I can buy something I like that I happen to find by accident, so I do not panic to pay for it because I have some btc I will disburse. and one more reason why I save bitcoin because the price is very high especially if invest in it very big profits.

10 years ago I travelled in Cuba. With my friend we rented a car and go through the island. And in one small town someone stole our money. But we still had a credit card - there was only one ATM in this town and it didn't accept our credit card so it was really huge problem.

Great, as we are been part of this forum our knowledge gains a lot in terms of bitcoin and other crypto currencies around here. Now, I invest a great amount of bitcoin as I believe by the end of this year become increase as I refer the last years best performance. Though, there are some downfalls of value of bitcoin and after several days it will increase again which is part on its trend the supply and demand on each users.
