To: our miners luciferase & slnet, you both have a very high stale percentage, your miner may be misconfigured. I would have emailed you except you did not provide your email address. Please check your settings and use the ticket system if you need help.

FYI we are running a test tonight at 11pm central time to see if the system recovers properly from a failure of the bbqcoind client as it should.

Downtime is expected to be around 15 minutes, no data or shares are at risk of being lost.

Thank you for your understanding.

Auto-restart script test concluded successfully, if the bbqcoind client should crash (as it seems to do every few days), it will automatically recover in about 5 minutes.

issued a small bonus to active miners to reward them for coming back after the unexpected hour or so of downtime yesterday.

We will continue to do this as long as the pool has enough coins available to do so.  How much of a bonus depends on how long the downtime was and how much the pool has in reserve.

Having some issues with server stability.  Will be migrating over to a new server Sunday evening.  Expected downtime Sunday will be about an hour.

In the meantime, the server is back online now.

the bbqcoind process is very unstable still.  During the server migration tomorrow I am going to rebuild it from source and wipe it's database so it will rebuild the blockchain again from scratch.

This will take a few hours but it will hopefully result in a much more stable server.  The estimated down time is now approx 6 hours.  I am going to start Sunday at 3PM Central time so please plan on mining on a backup pool on Sunday from 3pm to approx 9pm Central.

I will post updates in this thread as the process continues.  Thank you.

Update on the contest progress.  It is still running, but some of our newest members aren't donating anything and this has slowed it down somewhat.  Rest assured that it is still running and as soon as the server's reserve balance hits 1,000 bbq coins I will make the payouts as planned.

I would appreciate any suggestions for future contests to do on the pool if anyone has any ideas.

Update on the upgrade process.  The new server is up and bbqcoind has been rebuilt from scratch.  It is downloading the blockchain now.

Once it has finished I will bring the server completely back online.

Thanks for your understanding!!

Ok, the new server is up and running, earlier than expected too.   Hopefully everything will be much smoother than before.  Please report any issues you experience using the ticket system ASAP!!!

Thanks Guys !

The pool's reserve balance is currently about 900 coins.  Won't be long now till we hit 1000 and the contest pays out.

How about we see what this new server can do ?

Also,

I'm looking for a better favicon.ico.  If anyone has any experience in creating them I would like to see your ideas.  I'm thinking of something like a silver coin with SW on it or maybe a wolf head, idk.  I'll leave the ideas up to you creative types.

I'd like a small version for the favicon.ico and a larger to use as a site logo on the main page.  I'm going to use the same logo & favicon on all of my pools, so it shouldn't pertain to any one particular coin.

I'm offering a 800 BBQ bounty (from my personal funds) to the person who submits the winning design.

The share difficulty is VERY low.

It's set that way to accommodate slower miners.  If it becomes an issue than I will raise it.  At the moment it's a pretty good compromise until I can get vardiff implemented.

Is it an issue for you ?

Yes, I'm getting quite a few stales.

Turn your scan rate down to 5.  That's where I run mine and I get less than 1% stales. (Edit my stale rate is actually at 1.01% now.)http://i41.tinypic.com/33atrsw.png

Also, stratum is coming next, that will drastically reduce stales as well.

So far so good on the new server.  I haven't received any support tickets and I've been watching it closely.

I do need to restart it to implement some performance tweaks.  I will do that tonight at approx 8PM Central time.

Downtime should be about 10 minutes.

Nope, 5% stales.

Hmm, that's odd.  Well, after the server restart tonight the next thing on the agenda is stratum support.

I have everything I need to implement it all lined up, I just need to work through getting it working and testing it.  Perhaps you can help me test it once I get it installed ?

Stratum support is now operational!

It's still in testing as far as reliability goes, but I have confirmed that shares are counted and found blocks are credited normally.

If you'd like to check it out use all the normal settings except use port 3333 instead of 8342 and you'll get stratum.

Please report any issues you find with it !!!!

I keep hearing stratum what is that mean?

It's a newer way for your miner to connect to the pool.  It's more efficient than the older getwork method and generally results in much fewer stales.

You can read more about it here : http://mining.bitcoin.cz/stratum-mining (http://mining.bitcoin.cz/stratum-mining)

Just wanted to pop by and let you know that I am on board, and that this is the first time I have seen my name next to block found :) lol...

I wonder, do you fancy helping me tweak my miner a little? I have 2 7970's and I always struggle getting a good hashrate with script..

My current settings per card...

Msi ghz 7970

clock: 855
mem: 1500
guiminer: 7970 (low usage)
Threads: 2

Hashrate = 588

Powercolor non ghz

clock: 830
mem: 800
guiminer: 7970 (low usage)
threads: 2

Hashrate = 564

Windows 7, GUIscrypt alpha, 4gb of ram and an intel i5 cpu...

I can get a little more but I gotta crank everything right up and it doesn't seem worth the extra noise from the fans to get the little increase...

Also whenever I mine scrypt I see that I get loads of blocks on screen, but when I mine with bitminter client I don't get that and I get a better hashrate...

If you can help me out that would be great and as a thank you I will set my donation ;)

Please help cos I don't seem to find anything that works for me... :(

Well, the first thing you should probably do is switch to cgminer.  I mine with 7950's and I get 630 kh/s out of them so you should be able to do better than that with 7970's.

cgminer is not a gui program, it's command line but it's not all that difficult to get going.

Here's the stuff you need:

1. Cgminer for windows : http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/cgminer-3.1.1-windows.zip (http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/cgminer-3.1.1-windows.zip)
2. My Config file, edit the username and passwords of course : https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6PMWmOuapNud3NjajBjQzhBelk/edit?usp=sharing
3. My Batch file : https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6PMWmOuapNuTzNuemtFTzcxZkU/edit?usp=sharing

Here's what to do:
1. Extract cgminer-3.1.1-windows.zip into a folder on your desktop.
2. Save the config file and batch file (#2 and #3 above) into the same folder where cgminer was extracted to.
3. Edit the cgminer.conf with notepad and enter your username.workername and password and save the changes.
4. Double click the batch file and see how it runs!

Now that you have it up and running with my settings, you need to learn what the settings are and how to tweak them yourself.

Here's a tweaking guide written by the author of cgminer (If I remember correctly, I copied and pasted it) : https://docs.google.com/document/d/14JJOGkO2t6Oh9CtIsX1Tb5rMfKJsqygkgXDh-uk1D7g (https://docs.google.com/document/d/14JJOGkO2t6Oh9CtIsX1Tb5rMfKJsqygkgXDh-uk1D7g)

Here's the cgminer thread, scroll down and you can read about what each setting does : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0)

The contest is still running.  It is a small pool, but we solve about 140 blocks a day and really what more could you ask for from a pool ?  :)

If you'd like to join us we'd love to have you.

Also, I'd like to remind everyone that we do have stratum support working now.  You should consider switching over as it will reduce your stales.  ;D

To switch, just change the port from 8342 over to 3333.  Everything else stays the same.

Good, I'll throw 1.4MH/s at it.

Excellent !  Let me know if you have any issues.

Also, stratum is coming next, that will drastically reduce stales as well.

Okay, thanks.

Let me know if changing the scan time helps you out.

Nope, 5% stales.

Wolf, did you ever switch over to stratum ?  I think it will reduce your stales quite a bit.

Now that I've gone through 200,000 shares since stratum was enabled, I've got 620 stales, which represents 0.31%

If you're still over 5% there's gotta be something wrong with your configuration, or maybe even your network connection. How have you done on other pools in the past?

You could also proportion it by the amount of time spent actively contributing to the pool. To give the most loyal a little extra, you could also weigh it towards those who have the most hours. This could also discourage people from joining just for the contest and leaving right after.

I came up with this spreadsheet to demonstrate what I mean:

https://i.imgur.com/rzfaGt9.jpg

Hopefully that makes some sense to you.

You'd still have a problem with people mining just for the contest, then leaving. You'd probably want to have a constant contest, where those that log the most hours mining get the most bonus, regardless of hashrate. For example, I mine two hours before the contest payout, I get a little bit, but I keep mining, and the next contest payout, I get a lot more.

That's EXACTLY what I was suggesting.

Hey fella, why not treat yourself to a 7950 or even a 7970? Take your computer to a whole new dimension, and hash some nice coins while you're at it! :)

Btw if you were part of the competition then you did "win" as the pot was split between us equally regardless of hashing power.

That may well change though, in fact not sure it is even still going...

I have still to set my donation (naughty me!) but I will do that right now while I remember...

Any way glad to have you on board and glad you are enjoying yourself. :)

And to silverwolf... Still haven't got round to doing that tweaking, grrrrrr, why do I never have any time when I need it! lol...

Any way donation is now set. :)

How about implimenting an indicator for the donators? As they do with other pools I have seen...

And I had another idea regarding the BBQ's... We need to start up a middle man service ala bitcoin. So that people can spend them, I think it would be a great boost for the coin and make it more profitable to mine. I am looking for people to join up with to start such a service... Would you be interested? Is there anyone that is interested?

Lol, there was an issue while I was upgrading the FTC pool preparing to launch it.  It resulted in one FTC block being paid to the BBQ pool users (twice) because I missed changing one line in the script.  I've fixed it already, but since there was enough coins in the BBQ reserve to cover the payouts I just left them in place.

Call it a small bonus !

Wolf, here's what I found.  I pulled the information from the database for your userId for yesterday's date (05/23/2013)

During this time your hash rate varied a decent bit, and there was a period where you did not connect at all.  Here's the chart : http://i42.tinypic.com/2uhbz8j.png

Yesterday you submitted shares for 39 blocks here is the breakdown :

http://i40.tinypic.com/ezhgdy.png

I've uploaded the spreadsheet that contains the raw data if you'd like to review it.  You can download it here : https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6PMWmOuapNuVEYtRng0enNLU0U/edit?usp=sharing

Based upon what I am seeing here I would have expected you to be paid about 204 coins for yesterdays work and you were actually paid a little over 208 coins yesterday.

It looks to me like you were paid correctly, I don't think you were aware that your miners were offline for approx 7 hours yesterday.  Take a look at the data (it's in LibreOffice format) and let me know if you need anything else or if you see anything here that I've missed.

Thanks.

Strange. My backup pool doesn't have any BQC in it either... Thanks for looking into it.

Anytime man.  Your internet may have gone down for a while.  I know that mine does that on occasion.  They can be frustratingly unreliable sometimes.

The previous contest ended.  I will be planning the next one shortly though!  Stick around.

That's the reason we keep the share difficulty at 15 - 16, so that slower miners can get a fair shake at accepted shares.  It also increases the load on the server so I have to keep the pool fairly small until such time as I can get Vardiff implemented.

Unfortunately, Vardiff requires SERIOUS modification to all of the existing code which is why it's not implemented yet.

Frankly I'd rather have smallish pools anyhow, it's easier to keep up with, you get to know the miners better, and it's better for the coin (any coin really) to have lots of small pools instead of only a few really large ones.  Options are a good thing.

Hey there, finally got down to sorting my cards out and I think they are doing okay now... Can I just post my stats and ask you to look over them for me incase something is no good...

cgminer with 2 7970's

Clock 950
Mem 1680 (it hasn't crashed but wondering if I may cause damage?)
fan speed 75%
Temps 75

Hashrate 666 (dun dun duuuuun) when pc not in use and 640 ish when in use...

card 2

clock 990
mem 1664
fan speed 65%
temps 76

Hashrate 692

This seems to be the best and most stable I can get it... I have no pci risers yet else I'm sure I could get those temps down some or even eek a little more out of the cards.

I am getting some artifacting on screen with firefox but movies and such play fine.

Do you think this is okay to leave for long periods?

If anyone would like to know more about how I got this please ask. :)

If you are getting artifacts you might want to turn the mem speed down a bit.  Other than that it looks pretty good to me.

Okay cool, thing is I have always gotten artifacts while I'm mining, no matter which miner I use, youtube vids won't play properly either, the picture keeps freezing... Do you think more ram could solve this? I only have 4gb of system ram at the moment and I see from the task manager that I only have a small ammount free, although it says I am using 46% or something, still don't get that. Does that take into account virtual memory or something?

Is there a way to turn the intensity down within cgminer or does it have to be done in the conf/.bat file?

Also how come I can change a conf to a txt and then edit it but I can't change a .bat and do the same... Is there a way to edit a .bat?

Oh and yeah I was gonna say, turning the mem speed down wouldn't do anything surely? Because no matter what I set the mem speed to cgminer will use it to it's fullest right? Leaving no room for anything else, only thing you could do is turn the intesity down? I used to do that in guiminer when I watched a film as I used to get screen tearing and artifacts. Turning the intensity down solved that.

With cgminer though I no longer get any problems with video playback, except for online videos.

I saw a thread before about using on board graphics for running the OS/GUI, do you know if that is possible? I believe there was something you could possibly do in the bios though I'm not sure.

To our miner "byltz", there is something wrong with your configuration.  You are getting 74% stales/invalids.

Check your settings.

When running cgminer, press G to change the gpu settings.  You can try different settings here before typing them into the configure file.  They will take effect as soon as you change them but will be not be saved.

The memory speed will certainly make a difference.  Cgminer will run it at whatever speed you set it at, too fast and you'll get artifacts, rejects, or crashes.

running your desktop off the built in graphics and just using the cards to mine is possible, but it's sometimes hard to get working properly.

you can edit a bat file by right clicking it and choosing "Edit" from the menu.

There are many things which can effect payouts, but after a day or so you should be getting your full payouts regardless of where you are mining if it's PPLNS.

The other pools you tried may not have fixed the bugs in the mmcFE payout logic, it's a real pain to get it right but if you don't, you'll end up overpaying some users and underpaying others.

How's my pool working out for you so far ?

Silly me, didn't see the intensity option before! doh! lol...

Well just had a play with both intensity (going down to 10) and mem clock speeds (going down to 1300) on the main gpu (display gpu) and nothing helps, the videos still jerk and such. The sound plays okay but image freezes and jerks. Just checked I have the latest flash and I do... As a control I disabled the gpu and youtube ran fine...

This is very odd, I have not come across this problem before. The only thing I can think is a ram issue or maybe a driver issue. Grrrrrr, well I will have to live with it I guess, I so want to get a dedicated miner! lol... One day, cheers for your help any way.

Payouts were nowhere near what they were supposed to be on the other pools, even after mining for 2-3 days straight.  I've already earned almost as much mining for 8 hrs. here that I did mining for 24 hrs. at the last pool I tried lol.

This pool is great, please keep up the good work :).

So far the pool is great!  Earning what I'm supposed to be earning, low % of stales, everything is running smoothly.

Ok,

I know you guys haven't heard much from me lately.  That's because I've been busy.  After all the launch problems with the PWC pool I've been working hard at getting a stable set of base code that has all or nearly all the bugs worked out that is easy to deploy pools for new coins that includes the newest performance improvements and bug fixes.

Aside from a few performance issues the BBQ pool is doing GREAT! (stats page load times, anyone ?) so I'm not going to touch it until the new code base is 100% ready so don't worry.

The new code base has reached BETA status and I'm currently testing it on WDC (Worldcoin).  It needs more testing and more bug fixes I'm sure, but it's made it out of private alpha testing and so far everything is working well.

if any of you guys want to help me stabilize this code head on over to http://silverwolf.ath.cx/wdc register and throw some miners at it for a while.  Please report any issues (anything at all).

Once this base is stable, I will be deploying it to all of my pools and using it for any future pools.  I would like to have them all on the same code base.

Most of the improvements are behind the scenes, but you will notice increased performance, some changes to the stats and charts and other small changes to the interface.

I left the pool today... The guy/guys (?) over at BBQ.org are proper fools! They refuse to listen to any advice from anyone and are not welcoming at all... These cryptocoins are all about the community, why would you treat the community like crap? Especially when the coin is struggling as it is!

Any way, it is a waste of time to be honest and the price just keeps tanking, shame really cos it could have been good! Oh well, back to the old faithful for me.

Good luck with your pool, hope it picks up and I hope the guys at BBQ.org can pull their heads out of their arse! lol

I am only going to mine litecoin from now on, it is the only one I see as a contender... Yeah I know BBQ can show as profitable for a couple hours but as soon as difficulty goes up then you are back below the profitability line and so it is pointless. And if the guys at BBQ.org continue on track then they are doomed to fail. They dont even come say hi when you introduce yourself lol... I tried to gain interest and increase the traffic and conversation but to no avail... There is hardly anyone that goes to the site. Yet admin claim to recieve 50 emails a day! Lmao... Be nice if they could tell those people to post on the bloomin forum. Though I suspect it is lies.

I think all these alt coins are there to distract miners from real cryptocoins. Nothing more.

IMO There are probably too many alt coins at the moment.  But I do think they serve a purpose.  We need something other than LTC & BTC on the market.  I think there is room for the alt coins, especially since the cryptcoin scene is still very small and has a lot of room to grow.  Which ones will end up on top remains to be seen however.

How long before stratum support is added?  That would probably be the best thing you can add to the BQC pool.

Stratum support is active on port 3333. And you're right, since stratum was added my stales are around .2%

The switch over is complete!

I've also increased the share difficulty by one step from 16 to 31.

This will free up server resources so we can open more server slots.

If you have any issues with the new interface, please let me know.

Why has the difficulty been removed from the Block Stats page? I found this very useful. Can you please put that back?

Thanks.

The new site has a proper Zero Variance line in the graph, this is what the old (Difficulty * 10000) graph was hinting at.

It goes up and down with the difficulty and shows how many shares it should take to solve blocks based solely on the difficulty.

It serves the same purpose as the old graph, but presents it in a better way.

In this way you can evaluate the server's "Luck" by comparing the actual shares to the zero variance shares.

I may be able to add a third line just for the difficulty though, if anyone liked the old style graph better.

I will look into it, but the next thing I have to work on is fixing the vulnerability in the manual withdrawal logic so that I can re-enable manual withdrawals on all of my pools.

Everyone has to use the Automatic Withdrawal Threshold to withdraw at the moment.

I've been working on that since the SBC pool was attacked yesterday, but I went ahead and pushed out the upgrades to the BBQ pool because they were ready and it will significantly cut down on server load.

Yes I fully understand what the new graph means, I just prefer having the difficulty graph there to know what it was throughout the day without doing some math calculation (which I would have to spend time to dig up in the first place). That difficulty graph was one of the reasons I chose this pool over the others, and I definitely prefer it better. ;)

I only increased it slightly, 31 is still very low.  Give it a try and see how it works for you first :)  You should get roughly half as many shares as with the old 16 setting, but each one will count for twice as much as before.

I've been thinking about a way to have a port for slower miners with a lower difficulty and a separate port for faster ones with a higher one.  When I work out all the details I will work on making it available.

Vardiff would be better but that's....well...complicated to implement with this environment.

I did notice that I am getting about half as many shares as before. However, I dont think they are quite as near twice the value. But that is ok. My computers suck, I havent even tweaked them yet, and I dont think you should have to specially create or make any concessions for people like me that have really slow equipment. Its a nice thought but you may just be too generous

I think slower miners should want to get or create a better rig and not be catered to. If they are, they are going to expect that with all pools and it removes the incentive to either get new equipment or even tweak (or learn to tweak) what they currently have access to.

Believe me, I would benefit immensely if you made any concessions for slower miners but I dont believe you should just based on the principle of the matter :)

First I tried adding the difficulty back onto the graph as a third item.  It worked, but looked stupid because it exactly mirrored the movement of the zero variance line. (and I mean exactly.  It's the same line.)

So, I took it back out of the graph and added a Difficulty column to the "Last 50 Blocks Found" Table under the graph.

This looks fine and it's information people may find handy so I've updated all my other pools with it.

Hopefully this, along with the zero variance line will give you what you need.

Sure they are, since the share difficulty doubled everyone on the pool is getting about half the number of shares as before.

Strictly speaking I guess each share has no value.  It's not like PPS where you get paid by the share.  Instead you get a % of the block value by counting how many of the lastNshares were from you.

So, you see it doesn't matter what the share difficulty is really.  The lastNshares value doubles when the share difficulty doubles.

Sort of like this:

Code:
200 Shares (yours) / 2000 (lastNshares) = 10 % of the block value is yours
vs
100 Shares (yours) / 1000 (lastNshares) = 10 % of the block value is yours

Either way you get the same percentage.

There is more to it than that of course, but it gives you some idea of how it works.

Well, if I did implement a lower difficulty share port for slower miners, you wouldn't earn any more coins.  As I would have to change the way the scoring works.  I would set the slow port to a fraction of the difficulty of the fast port and shares submitted to the slow port would only count for that fraction of the big ones.

For example if the fast port is Diff 60 and the slow port is Diff 15 than it would take 4 shares submitted to the slower port to equal 1 share submitted to the faster one.

That's the only way to do it right.  It would only make a difference if the miner in question was too slow (or nearly too slow) to get shares at all, other than that payouts would be the same.

As long as you are getting shares fairly regularly it wouldn't make much difference, the variance might be slightly lower.

The only reason to do something like that would be to allow for even higher difficulty shares on the faster port (Doubling the share difficulty almost cuts the server load in half, because it's now processing half as many shares as before) while still allowing for slower miners to use the pool and get something.  I would imagine that most miners would be on the fast port.

I may or may not implement something like it, I would rather have a full-on Vardiff implementation but the stratum server I am using doesn't support it.

Quote
Believe me, I would benefit immensely if you made any concessions for slower miners but I dont believe you should just based on the principle of the matter :)

If the share difficulty were to be set so high that you couldn't get any shares at all, or got shares very sporadically it would be a great help, other than that it just wouldn't do much.

hmm, under optimum conditions the small change I made shouldn't make much, if any, difference at all in your payout.

I suppose if the stale rate is high or if your pretty far away from the server (network lag) than it might increase it.

Manual withdrawal functionality has been reworked to prevent exploitation and has been enabled again.

How it works now :

When you click the "Cash Out" button, instead of sending the money immediately it "Schedules" the withdrawal request.

Withdrawal requests are processed every minute when the cronjob runs.

Enjoy

Here's a guide for overclocking the 7950 & 7970 written I believe by the developer of cgminer (I copied and pasted it when I found it at some point).  It is fairly in-depth and is a slow process, but will yield the very best results possible with your hardware.

A Custom VARDIFF implementation matches your miners with the perfect ShareDifficulty for their hash rate.

It should be online in a week or two.
