planing to use 5 HD7950 (cards with 1 x 6-pin and 1 x 8-pin power connectors) on one motherboard. MB is ASRock FM2A85X Extreme 6 with molex near PCI-E ports. so i still need still need powered riser cables for pci-e x1 ? molex in mb https://i.imgur.com/GHWUJD5.jpg Title: Re: molex in motherboard, still need powered riser cables ? Post by: MinerLT on May 12, 2013, 07:45:56 PM i read somewhere in this forum "the molex powered riser cables are for using more than 5 cards in motherboards that don't have a molex near PCI-E ports"
Can anyone confirm that ? Title: Re: molex in motherboard, still need powered riser cables ? Post by: zif33rs on May 12, 2013, 07:57:14 PM You will still need powered x1 to x16 risers. I am building a unit with the same motherboad. It should be here tuesday. I plan on running 2 powered x1 to x16 risers and 2 x16 to x16 unpowered.
I think..and to be honest I am not positive..but when using the regular PCIe x16 slots from the motherboard you dont really need powered risers. Some boards without that extra 12v molex connection to the PCIe lanes I would consider using powered x16 cables. But on this ASRock unit I am going to try running as mentioned above. YMMV zif Title: Re: molex in motherboard, still need powered riser cables ? Post by: MinerLT on May 12, 2013, 08:28:49 PM You will still need powered x1 to x16 risers.
