Title: What happens if we die?
Post by: friends1980 on July 29, 2017, 10:27:21 PM
Nope, this is no existential question (although...). Everybody's talking about "When will Bitcoin die", but what if you die, and your family don't find your key, or don't understand it, or think it's only a useless sheet of paper with some code on it, or simply throw it away... Does this mean the currency's gone forever?

I find the possibility of this event rather realistic (yup I don't believe in eternal life), so that means that someday there might be 21M BTC but only 18M (and counting down...) is left in the market?

Yes, the coins are most likely irretrievable forever. That's why plans regarding coin recovery in these situations have been greatly discussed in the forums. And yes, when mining ends there will be less than the total of coins circulating.

Yes, That's right. Now there are lots of Bitcoins that no on have access to them and I think the number of such Bitcoins will increase gradually.
In my opinion all of us should have a will that contains our private keys or our passwords if we are keeping our bitcoins in exchanges.

valuable assets are only usefull when they are used ... and limited.
Bitcoin does this perfectly.

I agreed with you,..That is ver much possible to be happen, So I think it is really good to do and needed that we need to teach someone we can trust about our bitcoin savings at least if there's unexpected happen to me there is person knows my private key and password.

Just what I thought. It's just leaving a will when you die, but instead you will give them private key with the instructions how they can retrieve the coins if they dont have any idea what it really is about

Without the private key it's  impossible to recover the lost bitcoins so to answer your question then yes , The currency was gone forever , That's why it was very important to share your private key to some trusted family members to make sure that your hard earned bitcoins when somethings bad happen (Hopefully not ) will still be useful at least for your family member :)

Everyone in my family knows I own bitcoins. If I die, they won't be throwing out any of my paper wallets until they've figured out how to either convert them to cash or get them into their own address. Do people close to you really not know that you own bitcoins!?

Somebody's going to get my phone which has all my bitcoins on it.  Hopefully there will be none of those crap BCC ones on it (lol).

Unless I get squashed by a truck whilst said cell phone is on my person.  Then those bitcoins are lost forever--and that could easily happen.

There have been topics bringing this up in the past, and I've been thinking about creating a will one of these days, not just for my crypto, but for all my assets.  Makes sense to make one so that probate court isn't trying to split up my assets amongst a bunch of heathens that I could give two craps about--and I'm sure that's exactly what would happen.

The next question for this is if they know your private key to access your bitcoin when you die? Because me even my wife doesnt know my private key but she know that i have investment in bitcoin. That is why after reading this question i am planning to write down my private keys and passwords of all site that i have bitcoin balance makinv sure that if i die she can withdraw all my investment.

No one will know when we will die, no one will know when you will die. You can die anytime, you can die before you teach your son about bitcoin. So it's good if you immediately teach your son about bitcoin. just a suggestion.

A huge portion of bitcoins are already thought to be lost, not necessary from someone dying but from people losing their private keys. If you held your bitcoin on an exchange though it is possible for family members to retrieve it from them, but short of that people have to either make some form of backup for others to retrieve them in the event of death or more coins will be lost.

It is actually highly likely that more coins are going lost than there are that are currently getting created and if not it will happen eventually and bitcoin will truly be deflationary.

Everyone of us surely die and leave everything of what he/she have now. If you say what happen to your bitcoin if you die, surely it gone also if you don't tell anyone from your family about this. So as early as you get involve in bitcoin world you must tell them. Tell them how it works, transactions be made and let them try to be in bitcoin so that when you die, everything you left can be used with your family.

Your bitcoin will just remain on your wallet when you died, no one could open it unless they do know what is your private key and viola, your bitcoin would be in their hands, it is either they will seel it or hold it and use it for some good purposes. It would be better though if you are going to print a white paper and hide it somewhere, make a letter that could easily find by someone in your family saying about where you hid the white paper of your private keys.

For this to be avoided you should disseminate some personal information with regards to your bitcoin property to someone who you really trust especially your family(but it can't be applied at all times when it comes to family matters). At least you bitcoins won't gone it to waste and lost forever. Dying sometimes was not expected but at least prepare for it when the time comes.

You may be right for that, before we make a will and hand it to them, we have to tell you how to open our own Bitcoin purses so they will not be confused how to unlock the Bitcoin bag we left and give them. .

There is a feature in bitcoin called nlocktime, that basically acts like a dead man's switch. So it's basically a raw transaction to an specified address, the only difference is that the transaction can only be activated when a certain block height is reached. For instance, the 1,000,000th block. If you are still alive then you can obviously get your wife or whoever to send your coins back, but if you die(awww) then they get to keep it.

But you're right, this feature isn't widely used by any means.

So long term supply of bitcoin should be going down especially after the block rewards become miniscule. The number of burned coins, forgotten passphrases and inactive coins aren't going to come back to life unless an extradinarily large amount of collisions were found, which is pretty much impossible.

It's good that you have a back up of all your assets. My wife also has interest in cryptocurrencies and trade so she knows almost everything related to Bitcoins. If you have trust issues then it may arise some problems otherwise it's a great thing.

This will only increase the value that bitcoin has. Therefore it's important to leave something behind that atleast your family can get into your wallet just incase you die. I've got my passphrases written down somewhere and I told my mom about it so if there ever would happen something to me atleast I can leave something behind.

The case might be just as you described it. The coins will be lost. Forever.
Another reason why bitcoin may become more valuable on the long-run, ss the total amount that can be mined is limited.

So, you should take care that the private keys will be revealed in case of your death, including a description what you can do with it, if you want your family or other people to make use of your bitcoins. On the other hand, if you don't want anyone to know about the bitcoins, it's the perfect way of "destroying" money.

Thats highly possible to happen and it has already happened in many cases.Such bitcoins would become irretrievable becoming useless to any one especially to your family members.Thats why our family members should be taught about bitcoins and they must be provided with knowledge of private key.Otherwise, they would be losing a great fortune since bitcoin price may be very high during their periods.

The fact is that by inheritance you can transfer not only things or cash accounts. The fact is that even papers or records of relatives can be inherited. Therefore, these records can have everything And even the keys to your wallet, If you so very much want to make sure that after your death keys to the purses went to this or that member of your family.

You can surely do some research about certain thing that you can leave in this world, get a life plan and plan ahead and yes you can surely put all your bitcoin in it and you can find a trusted lawyer that if you die they can give your private keys and all the things you can abandon in this life time to your love ones, this is the only proper thing you can do to insure that your bitcoin would not go to waste, but yes a certainty of a lost bitcoin had a high provability, so plan ahead,

and for the OT of this thread, believe in the eternal life it is real, believe in Jesus that save us there is a GOD that will surely judge you if you can have eternal life or eternal death, but if you are an atheist I respect what you believe in and Good luck!

Before you die? Not that you know when and how right? But what if, accidentally, an unfortunate event occured? What now? I guess it is better to somehow prepare for the worst possible scenario right? It will be a waste if all our hard earned bitcoin will just vanished without the chance of recovering it. Better safe than sorry guys.

Hahaha that's it right there. Try not to die. But on a serious note though. You should always be a step ahead because this is life and anything can happen really even if you're still quite young. Just make sure you tell your relatives and store your private keys/passphrase somewhere.

I also partly agree with this idea, and why not?

Besides it is already much traditional to have last will testament, so why not apply it also in the field of bitcoin? This is also a big and nice idea but its lot complicated, unless it would be explained in a most understandable and simple way.

I am also glad about this idea.

I think it would be best if you could provide them with a copy just in case something happens,
You should always keep some copy somewhere they could easily find like saving it in some folder in your computer or maybe in your USB stick.

It is a difficult one this, obviously if you die unexpectedly the coins are lost forever. It is also risky giving a copy of ones private keys to a close relative, friend or lawyer. If they are dishonest, they could easily clean you out.

I think that's very great question and i believe measures should be in place where in the likely demise of one, family members will be able to have access to the bitcoins in one's wallet since it will be lost forever acrruing profits whereas no one knows about its existence and being unable to retrieve them.

Yeah, no need to explain everything to your family, they can find their way in the internet or with an experienced person - should you die. Only make sure they know you have altcoins.

Might be interesting to some people to avoid succession taxes...  ::)

Possible. You might lose everything that you had earned with so much hard work and effort, if your parents don't know how to use your Bitcoin and maybe its dumped in some random place then no matter what happens you can't do anything, cause you are dead(no offense).  But then if you have a spouse or children you can tell them about your Bitcoin ,because most of the kids of this and the next generation know how to use modern technology. But if you don't you can teach your parents/siblings as well.

It will be gone forever since they don't have the private key to retrieve your coins. But it is common that if you feel your remaining days is coming you would entrusted it to someone close to you(probably relatives). Coz if you didn't do it, all of your hard work to earn/get that coin will become useless.

In that case, since I have a brother who's knowlegable about bitcoin,  I let him know first about my private access and if ever that I will die, he knows already what to do. Since that is my way of supporting my parents, I know he will grant whatever is left in my bitcoin and for the purpose of giving it to my parents. Of course he needs to convert it into our local currency. Then in that case it would still be meaningful whenever I'm gone for good. This question is really serious though. Yes, it's too young to think about this matter but the really still prevail. We can't predict death and that's our worst enemy.

I'm too young to think about this, however, if I really die for one of your ears, all my bitcoins will be lost, no one can find it, because my relatives do not know. About bitcoin, everything is secret.
I agree with you, if we have a lot of assets in the cryptocurrency world then it is better to find a relative who knows a bit about Bitcoin, we have to teach them all about Bitcoin, The account is of real value because if we do not make the future your family will have nothing

When you die, you will lose everything if your family does not find the wallet key or do not understand what it is. So you should look for a lawyer or a trusted person to give them all your property when you die

Everyone in my family knows I own bitcoins. If I die, they won't be throwing out any of my paper wallets until they've figured out how to either convert them to cash or get them into their own address. Do people close to you really not know that you own bitcoins!?
In case of death, relatives or simply trusted persons should know not only about the existence of records with private keys, but also know how to use them to exchange or cash the crypto currency. This will protect them already from unscrupulous people, to whom they can turn for help in this matter.

because you wasting your time to find or earn bitcoins then keep it to have alot of it
then no one in your family cant use your bitcoins

I think that's very great question and i believe measures should be in place where in the likely demise of one, family members will be able to have access to the bitcoins in one's wallet since it will be lost forever acrruing profits whereas no one knows about its existence and being unable to retrieve them.
I was also wondering about this. Since bitcoins are digital currency and are secured with keys, it would be almost impossible for our family to access them after we passed away. I think we should keep one person in confidence and tell him/her about your assets including bitcoins. Share with them where you keeping all the keys written. It is wise to keep a written record of such things.

If you die and no one has access to your private key then those coins are most likely lost, there is a chance someone receives the same address, something known as address collision, but the possibility of that is minuscule, that is why we need to take precaution in the case of our deaths.

Yeah when you die no one could open your bitcoin waller in your acount unless you know the password or private key your bitcoin will be lost if you cant open it and will never be open again in that account obviously it will be nothing hopefully for some instace it is helping the price increase of bitcoin in the market.

I worked with someone that had lost his wallet. It was on an old computer. He had setup the mining rig and let it run. This was when you could very profitably mine.

He lost the computer and the wallet. His estimate was there was about 250BTC on there.

My thought is it's in a landfill somewhere.

I'd advise anyone that has a considerable amount of BTC and passing them down to someone is of importance, to hire a lawyer and let them handle it...meaning someone else will have your key.

My business, however, has a lawyer that could access it through a multi sig with other partners.

  • You should give your keys to someone you know and trust.
  • Write your keys in a laminated piece of paper. Put this paper in a bank and give it to your loved ones in your will, including instructions so they will use the private keys to get the Bitcoin.
  • Give to charity. Maybe they will be worth a fortune... up to $1,000,000 for one Bitcoin. You can give a Bitcoin to charity to help out the less fortunate even after you are long gone.

Hope you like these ideas. :)

Surely your bitcoin will be lost and will never be access again in your account or whereever you put unless they just got your private key or a password that help them to open it if not it will never be open again and your bitcoin will be lost and the supply of bitcoin is decreased.

I think that is a good question, one day we will surely die without knowing when and where it will happen. And all we can do is get ready. Preparing for everything including giving our treasure to our loved ones. But it would be a problem if the person we want to give the treasure does not know how to get it. My advice is to be honest to the person you care about, tell them what is really going on, and if it is necessary to teach them how to dilute the bitcoin you have, of course this is done only to the person you really trust. And with regard to the amount of bitcoin in circulation, of course the boards have thought about it, and I'm sure they've got the solution.

It is not as easy as you think, you could teach them how to do it, but there is not a guarantee they remember it and even if they do how are you going to communicate your private key or your seed, if you do not then the money is lost and if you do then they could as easily spend the money since they have the keys to spend it.

Yes, the coins are most likely irretrievable forever. That's why plans regarding coin recovery in these situations have been greatly discussed in the forums. And yes, when mining ends there will be less than the total of coins circulating.

Maybe so if it dies, can not fix the existing coin. Can the forum be able to improve in this situation.

Actually, I’m not dying yet, and I don’t pray I do so. We all hope to live long right? OK. But, to answer the question “what happens if you die”, well, your Bitcoin continues with its journey. But, if it happens that your children has access to it, then they can start making use of it.

But I doubt my parents will know how to withdraw this money. I have husband who is also in all that with crypto-currencies, so he is the only person who will be able to hold those coins in the case of my death. Add to that I don't hide logins and passwords, so it is not going to be hard to him.

;D that is good idea to save the bitcoins before we die and making our bitcoins never lose forever, but the problem on the dead men there are no peoples around the world who know when will be die, there are no acurate sign about the dead will some people, the best time to teach our children is now because we are still alive.

Current events are still a mysterious thing for many people. Many myths evolved around the events that experienced a person approaching his end as a shadow of the past or see a glimmer of white light at the end of a dark tunnel.
There were also survivors of an accident, who said that when they were about to die they saw a glimpse of their life span milling in front of their eyes.

Then it will be gone forever.  No one can access it since you or anyone who have access to it eventually die without formally transferring the knowledge he have.  And it will affect the bitcoin available in circulation.  It will be dead since no one can use it or retrieve it.  So better thing to do is to teach your kids or anyone in the househould about bitcoins.

If you lose your private keys then your bitcoin is lost forever. One of us dying would be very far from the first occurrence of this as well. I would advise treating it just like any other sort of investment account / property / whatever it is that you will pass on to your loved one's via a will. We must not treat bitcoin as some sort of frivolous thing as we should see it as investment and the possible monetary security of our future.

The eventuality will happen and bothering or planning won't stop it whenever its going to happen its going to happen and whatever will happen after is not any of someone concern because you will no longer be there to see how it infolds whether the people coming after do it well or say something wrong about you, all of that does not matter any longer because you are gone and you won't be coming back. So, live everyday like its going to be the last of it.

Well in my own opinion, if i die ? for sure all of my bitcoins will be worthless and useless because no one in my family don't know what is bitcoin and don't know anything in my accounts here in bitcoin that's why no one could retrieve it or can get all of bitcoins because no one could access on it.

Yes... I've heard so many discussions regarding this one too... Maybe it is also the time to start making an action oh how to retrieve lost coins from deceased  holders. I think it should be best if users or holders would be making some kind of an agreement or they would be having beneficiaries in case something happens, because we can't predict what will happen to us, so its better to have counter measures or it would also be best to have beneficiaries to take over your wealth in bitcoin.

Well in my own opinion, if i die ? for sure all of my bitcoins will be worthless and useless because no one in my family don't know what is bitcoin and don't know anything in my accounts here in bitcoin that's why no one could retrieve it or can get all of bitcoins because no one could access on it.
I think what is relevant to your heritage due to the fact that you don't really love their loved ones. When you love people then you care about them regardless of whether they agree with your actions or not.

Actually, I didn't really start the topic to discuss heritage. Because if you're dead, you don't care what happens with your coins.

However, in theory, it's perfectly possible to come to a situation where 50% or 20% or 70% - whatever - of BTC is uncontrolled. For instance, because the owners have died, or because they've lost their code etc.

So what will happen to the currency then?

What you are saying is actually true and most people don't usually consider it. But if you die without letting anyone know your bitcoin secret, I don't think that your coins will ever be retrievable. If we don't actually consider this issue, it might happen that less than $10 000000 bitcoins are in circulation in the next 100- 200 years. Rather give your loved ones your private keys just be on the safe side. They will read about it if you die, and be able to access your bitcoins with your private keys.

When a man die the world continue with those still living, and in my religion the is the believe that after dead is judgement.
Your deed while you were living is what you will be judge by either good or bad, and that is what determine were you spend your eternity either in heaven or in hell.
Coming back to the question of what happen to your currency when you die, it is good for your to relate your codes to a trusted member of your family in other for them to have control over your wallet in your absence.
If not is gone for ever.

When I die, before that happens I will teach my children to manage my bitcoin. And I've done that to the right to continue my bitcoin that has been running.

Well, I agree to that I will also teach my children to manage and make more bitcoin. In addition to that, when I die I will give my private key and wallet to my children. Then, I will teach them to use bitcoin properly and I will save some bitcoin that I will give to my family if I die. Lastly, I think I will make more bitcoin and I will give it to children.

You could put your bitcoin into a safe deposit box at a bank so any family member could get it, but then the government could also get it. Not to mention plenty of stores of bank deposit boxes going "missing." Personally I am too paranoid for that. I would rather give my family members a passphrase and specific instructions on how to unlock them if I were to die.

Bitcoin and life has similarities. Think of one's life which is completely not certain, same is the situation of bitcoin. It has got increased value, but the same cannot be predicted. So when we're no more what's the need to think about it. Better is to educate few of your friends and family to access bitcoin.

First of all, I would like to answer the OP, If we die then we will be dead persons and if our dead body will be thrown in water, it will float. Cool Han! hahaha!

I am not here to judge anyone's love on the base of whether they have told their loved ones about the BTC accounts or not. However, it is damn obvious that if they do not know the key, they can't access your BTCs.
I have also an idea. Exchanges must have some way to know whether someone is dead or alive. And once they discovered the death of  user, his BTCs should be collected. :p

I'm not sure what will happen with bitcoins that are stored and no longer retrieved after a long period of time. Does it depreciate? Go stagnant? Its probably advisable for us to keep our private keys ina safe place and entrust it to someone we can rely on, possibly someone with knowledge about bitcoin otherwise it would be useless. Storing it in a usb in a text file or something could probably do the trick, but if it were to be left with someone who doesn't know bitcoin, then instructions should be provided.

So what does happen to stored bitcoin that can no longer be accessed?

There is already an estimated at least a million coins that are lost forever.

Some people deliberately do this for an ICO or whatnot, using "proof of burn". Essentially, all funds raised in the crowdsale will be sent into an address which nobody can access unless they have extensive hashpower which not even all the governments commbined have close to.

When you die, same thing happens. Basically, bitcoin's supply goes down. Therefore, in the long term bitcoin is actually deflationary as the amount of coins generated per block becomes less.

Yes those Bitcoins will be permanently lost and can never be used unless someone knows how to calculate the private key or just gets lucky and guesses it.

There will be lost Bitcoins every year and therefore the number of lost Bitcoins will keep increasing over time. There will probably be a time in the future when there are more coins lost than not lost. But we won't be able to know which ones are lost unless people make it known what coins have lost private keys.

Can't you just leave the retrieval key code in safety deposit box/ entrusted with lawyer via will?

Yes, you could do that but it is important to remember that wills (at least in the United States) are matters of public record, which means that after the will is filed, anyone could go to the relevant county's courthouse (or access its records via website for a small fee) and read the contents of the will. So you would probably not want to put your actual private key in there, although you could still make a general bequest of your bitcoin balance to your successor.

Safe deposit boxes also carry some risks, like the risk of an unscrupulous bank official having access to your stuff, or the risk of either bank or government confiscation should there be a "bail in" to recapitalize the banks during a financial crisis, or perhaps a change in the laws regarding private assets held at banks.

Yeah, it's gone forever, lost coins.

If you are saving bitcoins for your loved ones then you should clearly explain to them how bitcoin works and how to inherit coins in case you die.

The simplest form of bitcoin inheritance is writing down the private keys on a piece of paper and storing it in a safety deposit box.

You can use bitcoin protocol for inheritance, but these are a bit technical and complicated, contract/time-locked transaction.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Contracts#Example_4%3a_Using_external_state

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Timelock

Shamir's Secret Sharing Scheme - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamir%27s_Secret_Sharing

Third-party services. Currently Coinbase doesn't allow to add a beneficiary, but through will and testament ownership of Coinbase account can be transferred.

https://support.coinbase.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2321225-how-do-i-gain-access-to-a-deceased-family-member-s-coinbase-account-

I guess in future there would be more bitcoin/crypto/digital inheritance services.

This is indeed a realistic way of looking at various possibilities in the future. I guess if you are not well prepared and you suddenly died and no one in your family is aware of your BTC, then I guess there must be some truth on the other side of the old adage that we cannot bring our money to our grave. Because that is what will happen, your BTC will be going with you in your grave.  ;D

Bitcoin is at its beginning and as many other things it has not yet a legal base everywhere in the world. Give it time and many other people will ask the same question as you have asked yourself. Sometime in the near future, somewhere in the world, some poeple will find the "legal" answer to your question. My guess is that as for other assets that have value in this world there will be a way to will them. In other words, in the next 10-20 years, there will be a legal basis for your descendants to inherit your bitcoin money.

Yes that is the sad part of it. You are sacrificing that in exchange for security and privacy which is not bad. But if you are willing to give your Bitcoins on your moment of death you can always right it in your last will and testament. That advantage of this is you are keeping your Bitcoin until you are alive and all your Bitcoin will be transferred on the moment of your death. This can be a quick fix for people who have these problems.

I agree with you since we do not know the exact time our life ends it is advisable and is a must to make a note or even tutorial on how our love ones can claim or withdraw our Bitcoins when time comes we leave in this world unexpected. I we dies with our Bitcoin and no one knows you have it then the circulation or the supply will goes down. Same as the man who put all his Bitcoin in his hard drive take note that it was a large ammount of BTC then when the drive malfunction and became unusable he throw it into like a dumpsite and boom! He lost all his Bitcoins and I think it also deducted the total BTC supply on the market. So lesson learned is that we have to make sure we had kept our private keys in a safe place and teach one of our trusted family member to learn how they can withdraw BTC in time something would happen to us because we'll never know when we will die, much better we are prepared for it so that they can have the benefits from our BTC since we work hard for it.

You have to prepare from now by teaching them from basic understanding, bitcoin can be a proper inheritance pattern and you only need small notes and hardwallets like trezor to give to them at the right time, we also have to think about family survival even before you die.

I will assume you mean what will happen with our Bitcoin if we die. Well you should show at least one family member how to restore a wallet with the private key that way they can still have the bitcoins. You don't want them to go to waste when they help out your family so much.

valuable assets are only usefull when they are used ... and limited.

I remember already debating this topic and the best, and most reasonable solution imo was fhat there should be implemented a "timer" that would, let's sat after 15yrs, return the btc to the miner if they werent used in that time or simply moved or interacted with in any way. So basically if a person holding the bitcoins dies, and he didnt leave the info for anyone, then after the 15yrs of his bitcoins being unused, they'd return to their original miner.

There is a large possibility that coins are slowly disappearing which only makes bitcoin a better store of value. Its not like a physical bar of gold where you can claim it if you die by just picking it up. If someone doesnt know the password or the private key, essentially its gone forever. I personally have my passwords hidden in my room and hope that if I die my family could access my coins.

Private keys should be in your will or in a safe deposit box with instructions on what to do with them. If it's not clearly explained, those Bitcoins could be lost forever. I'm sure this has happened many times and will continue to happen since Bitcoins have recently begun to be worth a lot of money. In the past, Bitcoins were less valuable and people were probably not as cautious.

If we die then all we have will die as well, to anticipate it better we choose people we can trust to continue what we have now then all your wealth will continue until your children and grandchildren. But if you choose to keep it a secret, I think it's a free choice for you to decide.

Yeah when we die we can't take anything with us. We will be going empty handed, it's good to hand over to someone else or make others make use of it and get benefitted. For this it's good to teach an trusted person or the family members how to access it, if something unexpected happens.

Well, I have not even thought about it yet, So it's good to make a will with the private key that we have to give to people we believe if something happens to us later a good anticipation step
Yes i think we should keep our private keys to one trusted person who was very close to us so that if these things happen they can used our money that we have saved in out wallet.

Could also leave they keys in escrow as part of your will with your lawyer - this is a good topic for discussion in the legal world.
Yeah, including the keys in your will is the best way they can be used after you. But what if we don’t have anyone who belongs to us? What if we don’t have anyone on whom we could trust much that he/she will use it in correct way? I think in that case we must hand it over to some business man. It will be a good act done. It will help that person and there will be no risk of their being wasted.

valuable assets are only usefull when they are used ... and limited.
Bitcoin does this perfectly.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img923/4281/ZKquMK.png

Exactly. We should never stop circulating this asset. Cause if we do it will slowly goes down. However that certain amounts that are wasted is so disappointing to look at. That should be divided to all user in my opinion(yet how to consider if the person dies and there is no beneficiary of his amount is almost impossible)

It is important that you need to tell someone you trust about what are you doing with bitcoin. Family or best friend. If worst thing happen to you, like accident or something. They can use it to help you.

How long you want to keep your btc? I think you have a beatiful plan for it use. But remember, we're not live forever, Nobody. So by doing investment with this crypto, you need to tell someone you can trust, just told him/her, you have an asset in bitcoin, and you keep it in online wallet, and you have print it seed. So If you're gone, and dont have a time to use it, they will find and learn how to use it, because its your legacy.

This is not as complicated as we have made it here. Person holding the Bitcoins has to die one day and of-course his siblings including wife, husband, son, daughter and in some cases  patents has the rights on the deceased person money whether is held in cash or in the form of digital currency. If any of these person has access to the computer where the wallet is stored, he /she can easily open the wallet and transfer money to their own personal bitcoin address.

When I die, before that happens I will teach my children to manage my bitcoin. And I've done that to the right to continue my bitcoin that has been running.

Well, if I die I will turn over all my bitcoin to my children and I will give also my wallet. In addition to that, I will make and earn more bitcoin and I will give it to my children if I die. I will also give my private key to my children. Lastly, I will hold my bitcoin and save it for the future of my children.

Just what I thought. It's just leaving a will when you die, but instead you will give them private key with the instructions how they can retrieve the coins if they dont have any idea what it really is about

Yes, someone you trust should know a password to the documents or databases holding your private keys together with a short description what Bitcoin is and how to access and sell it. If noone knows about your bitcoins, they are lost when you die until some geeks someday brute force the private key.

No one knows when will die so it is right to restore access to bitcoin, and to write the access code box. If the purse is activated 2-based authorization then you will not remain without money, and your heirs will curse you for greed.
well life and death is not in our own hands but I think it will not decrease the importance of the bitcoin. There for we should think about our family that we should leave something behind for our family that they will get after you will die. As I have got my passphrases written down somewhere and I have told about it my sister so I am happy if something ever happen with me at least I will leave something for my family.

If she know what is bitcoin and she knows how to handle it. Though if we are talking about in our self right, im a teenager who have a girlfriend i do have a parents too and they know what is bitcoin but they dont know how it works and what it is, they only know that im earning money from it, then if suddenly somethings happen well no one could use my bitcoin and when the time goes by if the price of bitcoins is in millions then my family or my parents dont know that they are a millioner but they couldnt get my bitcoin unless they could find all of the private keys  ;)

True, Dying is out of our hands, we all don't know our due date (death date), but as we live we all should have a contingency plan, meaning we all should have series of plans that, if we fail, then there is other plan for us to succeed. My sister knows about my private keys, and i have multiple copies of it in case of emergency, we all know how to operate our account, so i think i am prepared to die even though i am only 19 (regarding the topic, hopefully i will not die at a young age).

Well, if someone dies and the private key is not shared to anyone, the amount inside the account will be gone forever. Yes it will be wasted because all that you've earned will be gone for good so it's advisable to share infos about it, most especially the private key to someone closest and trustworthy with your accounts.

He is right for once, OP. You must tell someone who is close to you about your bitcoins. There must be somebody whom you want to trust with your valuables before death actually embraces you (May you live long but still how long can anyone live). I am afraid that all your bitcoins will be gone resulting decrease in total number.

That's why you have to view Bitcoin as an investment, not a form of play money. The amount of uses and users participating is astounding. As the Blockchain gains more authority and traction as a real way to store value, Bitcoin will be ever more attractive.

Store your Bitcoins in a cold wallet and store it somewhere secure like a safe. There are many options for cold wallets. Check out my website for more smart investing strategies for the long, long term.

You need to write Bitcoin into your will right now. You never know when you are going to die. If you die and all your Bitcoin is on an exchange and even your friend and/or family know, they will not be able to access it. (they do not know your password!)

At least put the password in a security box at your bank and grant them access upon your death. Chances are you won't die, but if it happens they will be able to get the pass and your Bitcoin. Otherwise it will be a waste of money and to your family.

bro that was quite funny. We are the only owners of our coins and no one can touch them so if we die those coins will be no longer of any use. Bitcoin network is run by humans and if humans die that means bitcoin die. So we must use that will thing to make them to be used by someone after us. and if people start dying while owning bitcoin will also affect the value of bitcoin.

I understand that many people would not like to see their money disappear after their death, but the purpose of my OP was to discuss the economical consequences of the fact that BTC will be disappearing along the way.

Will this bring more value to the crypto concept or could this mean a possible destruction of the concept?

For that when we have bitcoin which according to have a high enough value then the best preparation teach one family how to use it and tell them the password from the account bitcoin that we have, so that when we die then the bitcoin we have will not die, but useful and can be owned by the people we want to have the bitcoin we have.

This happens every day actually, people loosing their private keys, sending bitcoins to another coin address, and simply being hacked.
I doubt that there ever be 21M of bitcoin circulating, some wallets have thousands of bitcoins for years now, and no movement at all.
So, don't loose your private keys, always double check where and how much you send, to avoid loosing any crypto at all.

There is so called will and testament I thought so.  If anyone dies and if that dies wealthy or somehow having some treasures like bitcoins, it must be at least been settled on a legal matter like having it documented on a Will and Testament.  You wouldn't want your wealth just turn in to dust when you have gone suddenly.  You have your family, your wife/husband or children who at least you let them know your passwords or important matters just in case something happens to you.  Just my opinion or suggestion.

Personally, I have long thought about what will happen to my coins after that when I no longer will be in this world! and therefore, despite my son for 10 years, I personally teach him everything that he after my death owned all the information and managed coins in the future to support his family in the future and his mother! so that life seemed to them easier and nebylo needs! this will be my will for them !!!

This fellow was actually wondering about the economical consequences of cryptocoins disappearing slowly, but nobody seems to give a shit and doesn't even bother reading the other posts and replies in this thread, clearly stating it's about ECONOMY and not about your will.

Of course you need someone to have access to your keys if you don't want your coins to be lost. We really don't need 10 frigging pages of posts to figure that out.

But WHAT ARE THE ECONOMICAL CONSEQUENCES IF THESE COINS GET LOST SLOWLY?

I hope it will be clearly readable now.

Mental note: never forget to self-moderate topic again.

IF some day one who holds many bitcoins dies, in such a case those who get his private keys will be able to get the bitcoins or else if that private key got deleted means those bitcoins will be lost forever as no one will be able to access the bitcoins of the deceased person unless and until if he shares his private keys to close associates or family members just in case anything happens to the bitcoin holder some one else should get to use his bitcoins. Due to increase in the number of bitcoins users the prices will keep on increasing and the lost bitcoins will be lost forever if the bitcoin holder dies with his private keys.

This isn't as confused as we have made it here. Individual holding the Bitcoins needs amazing day and obviously his kin including spouse, husband, child, girl and at times licenses has the rights on the perished individual cash whether is held in trade or out the type of advanced money. In the event that any of these individual approaches the PC where the wallet is put away, he/she can without much of a stretch open the wallet and exchange cash to their very own bitcoin address.

when you die and your family does not find the key, then this is over. the coin is decaying by itself and your work will not be useful to your family. so my advice do not make this  your for family secret.

This is a very nice idea, it is advice-able that one should have trusted family member who knows about his crypto life but private and public because Of a true fact, man will definitely die someday, someway and if he or she did not in any way give the family a clue or hint on how to access their bitcoin or any other cryptocurrencies, such currency is indeed lost forever?

If we die our holdings and assets also will be in memories. No can ever revert it back by using only your picture or birthcertifacate or id's etc. You have to choose right now who you can trust the most so that your assets will be move out when you will die.

In my own personal opinion, if we die and none of our family do not know how to access in any of our accounts then all of our holdings will be useless because they do not have any copy of our private keys. Better teach one of your family how to access on your account, so that if you die all of your holdings will not be useless.

I thought a lot about this question
I tried to explain to my family how they to take advantage of the currencies in the event of my death
But unfortunately, I can not find a response
They say write the steps to deal with this and we will follow the steps and deal easily
I tried to explain it was not that easy but no use
I hope that you will understand this before my dea

I've already written down my wallet details , and how to access them, a brief guide along with my bank account details. So when they check them they'll see and hopefully someone understand. well I've already told them about it and they while they mainly think I waste my time they do have a small idea.

But yeah, what you're saying is true, they can be number of reasons to have a less circulation even after all the bitcoins are mined. well it will already be like that, because we've seen some sad videos people already lost their wallet addresses, hard drives that they mined bitcoin, saw an video of someone loosing 20 Million USD value BTC by thinking it's not important, he mined them in 2009 and he recycled the hard drive and those BTC will be lost forever.

If you die without leaving sufficient information enough for your remaining families and loved ones to trace your Bitcoin or altcoin treasure, then the same treasure will also die with you. And I am sure that a good number of Bitcoins, amounting to a massive wealth had already found its way in limbo, being forgotten years before Bitcoin came into the spotlight. Who would have thought that this once worthless invention would reach something like today?

DEATH is surely inevitable. Everyone will die but nobody know when. For all i know, there will always be this one person or few people we can trust. it could be your spouse, siblings or parents. In order for us not to die with our bitcoins going waste, its better we make our bitcoin wallet address and private key known to them. Better still, we can make a will which includes our bitcoin account details so that our relative can get access to our bitcoins when we die.

Death is certain in uncertain season. No mankind can escape the reality about death. With regards to crypto once the person die and no one knows about the private key, then every token of the person will become meaningless unless the block chain will do something to revive the tokens and give it to the family.

If you didn't tell your family about the bitcoin investment, then it will become useless after your death. You must share about bitcoin and its password to a trustable person.  Then only they can use that after your death. So please disclose it to anyone who is more sincere to you and trustable to you.

It seems to be gone forever, and of course this number will continue to grow then the number of bitcoins scattered in the market will probably continue to decline. The case of the loss of bitcoin not just on the death factor alone, but this has happened to someone named James Howells an IT expert from Wales. He accidentally discarded the hard drive, which is full of bitcoin with a total of 7.500 bitcoins. Surely this will add a row of cases of bitcoin loss.

Dying inevitable and we cannot foresee it as well. We all die eventually so if we have some important assets maybe left behind like bitcoin for an instance, it is best to enlighten or give a well information on how bitcoin works as well as  entrusting our bitcoin wallet and private key in case of unforeseen incidents will happen to us in the future. We may die at least we have given them the bright future for themselves.

When I die, before that happens I will teach my children to manage my bitcoin. And I've done that to the right to continue my bitcoin that has been running.

When you die and can not leave any small sample of inheritance or a private place to find, the value for money will be hashed forever. And that would be the fact that in the next cycle when mining is no longer appropriate. 21 million bitcoin can be left only 15 million. ::)

Yes, That's right. Now there are lots of Bitcoins that no on have access to them and I think the number of such Bitcoins will increase gradually.
In my opinion all of us should have a will that contains our private keys or our passwords if we are keeping our bitcoins in exchanges.
Have a will on ourselves is not enough to gain back the bitcoin that already has no access because of die or other thing.
We need to put it safe and can be accessable to other people like family because of not then have a will only is not enough.

Unless if we die not a sudden death, then we can leave the private keys to someone whom we loved and trusted the most so they can use it and make it grow even better. When a person dies, physicians usually check for cardiac death (when the heart stops beating) or brain death (when there is no more electrical activity in the brain), O'Connor said. [Are 'Flatliners' Conscious After Death?]

If someone is a "vegetable," that means there is no more brain activity, and that life support is keeping the organs functioning. At that point, "legally, the life support is turned off because they have died," O'Connor said.

These two types of death — cardiac and brain — are used no matter how the person died. "It could be a sudden cardiac arrest, when the heart stops. It could be a bad trauma, when someone has a lot of bleeding and then their heart stops because there isn't enough blood flow," O'Connor said. "Or, you could have a bad neurologic injury and then have a brain death, where your brain doesn't have electrical activity, and then your body would follow."

I think the dead are obligations, but our BTC will live even though our little boy does not know. then from now on we teach them who knows when our time immediately died.
the passion for bitcoin users, bitcoin could save the lives of our children's spirits ...

The currency was gone forever. That is why after reading this question i am planning to write down my private keys and passwords of all site that i have bitcoin balance makinv sure that if i die she can withdraw all my investment. So as early as you get involve in bitcoin world you must tell them.

Am not saying will should let them have access to our private keys and password immediately but teach your children and wards what cryptocurrency is all about what all aspects you engage in. If a bitcoiner die and his family doesn't have any idea about his bitcoin possession is very unfortunate phenomenon but realistically, it might happen so your observation of decreasing number of bitcoin circulation due to this circumstance might occur.  This is the reason why I think it is our responsibility to share our knowledge in our family members about bitcoin so they will be familiar with it and can access your possesion in case something bad happen to us. I think this is the only key to prevent the decreasing number of bitcoin circulation.  Some people might think that having a program to recover lost bitcoin is the key but I found this very risky that might be use to hack other account in the future.  So, we have to be aware of it and prevent it through education dessimination in our family.

If you die when you hold bitcoin in your wallet and without sharing your privacy key to anyone it will be gone forever. Therefore you must prepare everything for the future.
That is even very normal in our daily life, if you will not share your information about your property no one can know about it and all your property will gone for ever, you need to share your information about your online wallet as well as your bank accounts if you want you family to know about your property and assets and after your death they can easy get all your property.

Agree all our investment will be gone once we die accidentally so it is very important that we inform atleast one of our family member that can access all the importants files we have. We can also save our files and video tutorial  in flash drive of a hard copy so they can easily access.

I don't want my coins will not worth to them because what I do is for them too and I will give something to their life. and now, I already told my parents and my brother and my sister what I am doing in the cryptocurrency so they know that I don't use that money for myself but for them too.

To be honest, if you are having a legal document or any document which is trusted by your family members behind you then you can always distribute your crypto funds among your family members along with the credentials of using it. It is true that we have lost a huge number of Bitcoins so far and hence as a user we should make some provision for the treatment of our crypto wealth after our death.

I don't even believe right now that there are 18m Bitcoins that are in people's controls. They estimate around 4 million is lost already, and by the time majority of the mining gets done that number could increase to 5 million. That is why I like to use 16m total as a baseline for where we will end up, and I think the price should reflect the supply at least when it is all said and done.

For bitcoin members keep trying to do something to face death and to be careful about bitcoin purses, some people have more bitcoin in their wallets but he speaks first to talk to his family about his bitcoin. give your family some data about your bitcoin to take care of something you do not want in yourself.

That's why education is very important. Today we teach our children the importance of saving money, investing, etc. Its also done via regular media to educate people on saving, investing and basically the value of fiat currencies. If cryptocurrencies will catch up and explode, I am sure the same thing will happen. We as parents and even the media will take part in educating younger generations on how to save, invest and acquire more and more cryptocurrencies.

If it does not go that far, I believe we need to talk with a close family member and educate them on the value of cryptocurrencies and if something happens to me (or you) then that person will have all the details, basic knowledge to take over and do whatever with those cryptos! So we need to make sure in the case we die, we have someone else assigned to take care of my (your) cryptocurrencies.

I think if you said what happened to your bitcoin if you died, it would be lost if you did not tell anyone from your family about it. So as soon as you get involved in bitcoin world, you have to tell them. When you die, you will end up in a completely different virtual world than the one where there is now a crypto currency. Therefore, you will no longer need a crypto currency. If you do not leave clear information about what to do with your crypto currency codes, then of course, your relatives and relatives will not understand them if they do not turn to the appropriate specialists. Now access for various reasons to more than six million bitcoins has been lost. I would not say that they have already been lost forever. All of them remained in encrypted form in block-chain technology blockchein. It is said that quantum computers will soon appear that will be able to decode any codes in a very short time. So do not worry, your bitkoins for humanity will not be lost.

Wallets should have a feature where you can "memorialize" your account to be able to retrieve by a family member by supplying proof I guess just like in Facebook when someone dies.

..i agree in you..if we think that we are living as soon as bitcoin is already reached its last value,,then good for us..but the saddest part of it,,is that we don't how long will going to stay in the future..maybe our next generation will continue what we have started..so while it is early,,let us pass and share our crypto wallet on our children or our prospective heirs so that we don't only find our hard work as a treasure but as heirs on our children.

If you die and if none of your family members nor friends don't know how to access your account all of your holdings will be useless, so better teach one of your family members on how to access on your account and about bitcoin for it will not be waste.

Yes me too, I also teach my kids about to manage my account in bitcoin, teaching them is good opportunity cause we know we cannot predict tomorrow in our lives so we need to be prepared. I tell them if something happens to me they will know to manage an account, that account for there future.

I already teach my brother and my parents too and so far, they can understand how to use bitcoin. I think we need to do this if we want to give the bitcoin and let them continue what we have done so they could still make money for their life. and if I die, I want to donate some bitcoin that I have for the charity and for my family especially when they are ready to continue for searching another way to earn more bitcoin to them.

Coins will be on your wallet forever if you wouldn’t teach someone before your death how to use wallet/ And don’t forget to leave the key and then rest in peace. ;D

As a solitary bitcoiners in the family I thoroughly agreed with you on that, we will never know whether when we will be our last day in this world. Furthermore, I think I need to leave a printed material besides or show one of my relatives even only a piece of information that may enough for them to recover my bitcoin in a wallet yet I know wouldn't be a simple undertaking. In any case, I thank you for opening it up, I simply have made a thought for this issue nearby.

Of course our coin coin will not be usable again. And we can no longer get the coin we want, it causes us to be dead or no longer in this world. But if we have children or family, we can still pass on our coin coins to all of them. They will continue us.  :)

Right, the coins will definitely not be restored forever. That's really the reason why plans about their coin recovery in these situations are the reason for the forums. And right, when the end of mining is actually going to be lower than the total of coins it is moving.

Let's be realistic. if we die, no one's going to benefit your Bitcoin or your altcoins. so it's better if you have a plan on giving them to your loved ones or relatives just in case you die. I'm sure that they will remember you as long as they live. who knows, maybe you made them rich by giving them all your crypto.

I think you can write Bitcoin's private key in your will. If your family can understand what it is, of course, you have to explain it in advance, otherwise 100 BTC is also worthless for them if your family will not play cryptocurrency.

well i think Then it will be gone forever.  No one can access it since you or anyone who have access to it eventually die without formally transferring the knowledge he have.  And it will affect the bitcoin available in circulation.  It will be dead since no one can use it or retrieve it.  So better thing to do is to teach your kids or anyone in the househould about bitcoins and That's really the reason why plans about their coin recovery in these situations are the reason for the forums.  I'm not afraid of losing BTC, my private key always stick on the calendar in the house. And my tip is that in the key sequence I changed the number according to my "lucky" number. I said that number to my brother (he does not know much about crypto but will not reveal the "lucky" number if I'm still living normal). So even though someone saw or copied my key but could not own the bitcoin because the alphanumeric key was changed.  ;D ;D

It seems to me that it will be difficult for the older generation to explain what bitcoin is and in most cases everyone will think that a person is a fool) especially in underdeveloped countries

Maybe you are right. If someone die and their wallet remain untouch, then the balance will sit there forever.
total supply may not change, but circulation will reduce eventually. I think the best way to prevent this is to store your wallet information,
and save it like a will for your kid or families or relatives.

That is why you need to write it down in a very detailed manner, so your family can gain access to it and it would not go to a waste, or else it would be irretrievable for anyone. Yes, the bitcoin left on the market will be decreased if the bitcoins can not be recovered by anyone, but it will make the price higher as the number of bitcoin left goes down.

it's very difficult to turn off bitcoin because basically bitcoin is a tool for buying and selling, and everybody buys bitcoin to invest, and bitcoin will stay alive and become the leader for all coins.

I agree to this because not all 21 million bitcoins circulate the pathways of blockchain. Many are lost due to unexpected events. But, befor I die, it is my duty to explain first how they can retrieve my cryptocurrency assets. Nonetheless, this thread is so negative and we must always spread positivity in this forum.

Of course, when we die and our families do not know if we have an investment in bitcoin then we will lose all our assets and our family also can not inherit it. With a decentralized system to make the bitcoin can be controlled by our own so that our bitcoin will be immortal in the wallet without anyone can find it. So it can be ascertained if the market will play with less number of bitcoin, not to reach 21 million bitcoin. This will make bitcoin increasingly rare and sought after by many people.

It is simply as that! If we are died our bitcoin is still stored, no one can claim it without a private key. Maybe the value of your bitcoin will be doubled or triple with the capital, but it cannot be claim without it's private key. It is simple as that.

I think the most intelligent thing to do is have everything of your bitcoins documented and kept in secret so that when the time comes, you can just give them, your family, the rights and the claims to your bitcoins. You can also entrust the bitcoins to a certain company to keep it circulating.

Before that happens you will teach your kids to manage your Bitcoin. And you have done that to continue your Bitcoin who has run this.

I think bitcoin is the same as a family business. When you're children were capable enough of learning things and doing things on their own to handle your business you let them and teach them freely. Same as bitcoin. When you find someone who's willing to help you and they're teachable then you start sharing things to them about bitcoin. In that way your family will still keep the heritage of being a supporter of bitcoin and its beneficiary.

Yeah no one can see the future.

So the good things we should do before we die is to give those important details of our investment to someone we can really trust so our investment will not become useless and ensure they will give it to our love ones.

This very question struck in my mind too few months back and as a measure i asked my elder brother to get some knowledge about bitcoin and thing so that i can make him understand about my holdings and how to unlock and use them incase something happens to me.
So you guys should also do something similar.

When we die! our bitcoin will be lost if we don't keep our private keys for someone else in the family or to a close friend. I think it's too risky if you do that, but you should do it and trust someone else for your money, it's better than this amount of money will be lost forever, At least take a part of your wealth in another wallet and share your private keys for the someone you trust and the other part save it for yourself.

Tell the family about some of the common sense of cryptocurrency. When accidents happen, they can take out the cryptocurrency!

if I die, some of my family is playing bitcoin so they already understand how the wallet works so I just write a private key on a piece of paper that I keep neatly in the closet it's my action to keep the confidentiality of my asset data, I have not done now because it is not dead :-[

Yes it can gone forever if no one know your wallet passwords or key. Maybe to prevent this, peoples need to share their key to someone they very close.
So if they holding much amount of bitcoins, the circulation number won't decrease significantly because the large amount of bitcoin unable to use.

If ever someone dies and their family member or spouse never knew about bitcoin, your coins will be gone forever it is just like losing the key of your unbreakable safe. That is why to prevent this you need to put write it with paper and specifically put that you should not throw this away because this is money and also make sure that you put the amount of the money. If they see that they will never throw it and it is really up to them if they want to learn on how to use bitcoin and cash it out or continue investing it.

If we're not keen in making writings and passing it down to whomever eligible, then you should be worried and start writing. Write whatever possible data or information regarding how to withdraw your bitcoins out of your wallet and be used again properly.

Unless someone knows about your Bitcoin investment or has access to your laptop or smart phone I don't think anyone is ever going to be able to get your Bitcoins. They are going to be lost forever like the hundreds of thousands of Bitcoins already lost. If you have a large amount invested then you should consider putting your private keys in your will.

Even if a person is having just small amount of bitcoins, he should disclose the details to at least family person.

If bitcoins survived for next 50-100 years, price will be at least a million per bitcoin and that will be huge money for future generations also. I was watching a video where a old person kept shares of a company and the 3rd generation cashed it for millions. At that time, shares were issued on paper in my country.

Though I do not have anyone that have access to my private key for now. I need a very trustworthy person to show such thing, I am working towards that since the person need to be blockchain oriented, can handle bitcoin transaction effectively and correctly without inviting a third party. I am teaching him that. I do not want all my digital asset to die any day I will die.

Good one, I do think about this since I heard about a guy with 7000btc in his hard drive that got lost, the best is to have your private key writing down and also have someone to trust with it and share it with, like your children are good to have good talk with in terms of passphrase and password . And let them know the value of the coin, I think they should be aware since you are in to cryptocurrency and also know the value and you can always count on them because they are to inherit your asset.

Yes it’s true, coins that have been lost or can’t be recovered will reduce the amount of the provided coins. But recovering the coins that have been lost will require a very long time if the miners are less. And in the end the coin will disappear slowly and maybe the stock will gone.

If it happens as you said, of course the bitcoin we have will not be usable and will be buried forever, unless your family understands it and knows the bitcoin password you have then they can use bitcoin you have and can do transaction on bitcoin that you have.

I do not think that the Bitcoin number will be lost over time. Because Bitcoin owners will instruct their relatives how to sell or buy Bitcoin after they die. Bitcoin is considered an asset and the holder must have a way to not make that money disappear forever. ;D

the coin will be impossible to retrieve unless someone in your family has the private keys. that's why this is important, share the private key to a trusted family member as a backup plan. we dont know what could happen in the future. having plan B's are good
