Hey all.  I would like to know this.  We all know bitcoin got well know a while back.  But it wasn't until this year when bitcoin hit 1000 dollars when everyone became aware of it.  Then it went up more and more etc.  I did not know much about any other coins besides litecoin.  I had no clue there were so many coins etc.


Well what i want to know is when exactly did all these altcoins got so popular but most importantly, were there lot of discussions of altcoins before bitcoin hit 1000 dollars?  Because had i know about these altcoins, i probably would have gotten a good bit of them at low prices.  I had no clue litecoin was so low price at the start of this year.  Basically every altcoin in the top 25 etc has went up a lot where you could have made so much money etc.

Most of the announcements and discussions are actually here on bitcointalk. In addition, most companies have their own channels like Slack or Telegram.

And the number one reason for altcoins getting so popular, is people realizing that there is tons of money to be made with alt trading. People buy low, fud and pump and sell high... $$$$ profit.

It is going to get more popular because lot of money involving. Where there money there are lot of people chasing it.
In my book crypto is still in beginning phase. There's going to be decentralized exchange phase soon, basically extortion, bribery, ransom etc. will be just a click of a button. It's bad or good invention no one know, I myself not happy when think about it but the tech pointing that way.

There had always been altcoin launches on this forum (litecoin, namecoin, etc) but it seems to have really exploded since 2016.

The value of bitcoin is constantly increasing.

Altcoins have always been around, I think they have become that much more popular recently because bitcoin is starting to get quite expensive and people are looking for the next bitcoin, especially now with ETH coming along people will be looking for the next big coin.

I also wanted to know, too. I hope someone would educate us and give us the real answer on your question. I'm guessing that it started to get popular when it was listed on exchanges.

I tend to agree with you; nowadays cryptos pop uped like wildfire and it tends to be less about innovation, but more towards greed.

you nailed it, it's because of the high value of bitcoin that more investors come to invest in altcoin, to have a chance to make more bitcoin, it's not new that altcoin are the only thing remaining to make tons of bitcoin, there is no other way anymore because now is very hard to acquire bitcoin without buying and investing millions

People missed the Bitcoin train but they still want big returns, so they invest in altcoins in the hope they would skyrocket like btc did in the past. That's the reason of existence of most altcoins.

The coin got famous first and then started being listed on exchanges.

When people first couldn't grab hold of BTC, (933,200% ROI back from 2011) they want other short bursts of high returns and are turning towards investing money into altcoins which is making them popular.

Mainstream media has hyped Bitcoin a lot since January.
After that in May they started hyping up ethereum and other alts.

I think the last eight months have really made Altcoins really popular. I see from the Facebook feeds now most of my friends on Facebook are involved in Bitcoin and Altcoins. Now even all my family want to get involved, which is another ten people so that means coinmarketcap over the coming year is about to really explode I think.  Even my Dad told me today, I wish I had listened to you and bought ten bitcoin when it was 400 bucks..He regrets it so much lol.

I think 2014 or so. That was when cryptocurrency was shown and was teached by us by those people that were behind this. And I think bitcoin cannot live without its alts so I think it is better for altcoins to rise also. It is not a bad thing, but the opposite. Primarily altcoins are just an alternative we are here for bitcoin though.

I think Litecoin was one of the projects that helped to establish strong altcoin scene!

Altcoins got really popular just this 2016 because in the past, only a few invests on ICO's but look at it now, there are many investors looking to invest into new promising ICO's. Those who have known sooner is so lucky, they have made a huge profit by now if they have invested big. Too bad I only have loaded a little bit less than 1 bitcoin worth of alts way back in the days but still its nice to get profit.

We can love them, we can hate them..But one is clear they are here to stay and it is almost impossible to destroy one coin. Till there is one open wallet and one miner everything is ok. Every coin have its buyers and its sellers. It is only question how much attraction will one get, and how popular will become. So never call one coin She... coin!
Now they are becoming really popular, few years before was only experimenting. And popularity will only rise over time!

Altcoins kind of existed 2 years ago and those who were creating them popularized them as well. Nevertheless, I believe they weren't really popular at that time. People were mostly getting to know bitcoin then. Altcoins became extremely popular this year during spring. They started to grow in price rapidly and new coins started appearing very often. On this forum altcoin signature campaigns paying in btc appeared which is also a sign of their popularity. They gained popularity because of investment opportunities IMO.

It's because alt trading is more volatile and offers potentially greater rewards than bitcoin trading. And also noobs look at the price of bitcoin, decide it is too high, and try to spot the "next big thing" in the alt market instead.

Well in present what we need is the time, maybe one year, or two years, even after 10 years the potential of Altcoin recognized from most country on the world's and popular with anyone. So, we just need waiting this future become true :D

I think that was not a main reason, But those know the altcoin can be a good place to make a lot of money through trade the altcoin itself. So, those invested on such project wants to get the decent amount from their investment. Remember the business thing that you must get return from what are you pay.

Bitcoin also a crypto as a example ETH also a crypto .

i missed the BTC in 2010.but i invest alt coins lot (ETH.SIA).

I think litecoin and doge were already there and somewhat popular before 2016 but yes the year 2016 has seen a flood of altcoins being launched almost every day there's has been a new altcoin launched and introduced but maybe I'm wrong because I haven't been much into them and only now have started to take an interest in them but this year and the years to come are surely going to be an era of cryptocurrencies and therefore we will see more and more altcoins coming into existence in the future.

It you type in Google trends word "bitcoin" you will see how it's popularity was growing. But the serious attention was caught only some months ago in the end of 2016. The interest to bitcoin provoked the price's growth and exactly in this moment popularity of altcoins started to grow. Because Bitcoin became too expansive to buy it so easy, but altcoins are not and all of them are promising the similar results as Bitcoin reached.

Altcoins was always lurking, the price increase in BTC made altcoins more attractive as a substitute for BTC investments. Also the popularity of Ethereum gained considerable momentum and also gained allot of traction in the media. Not to discount really good projects like Byteball, Dash, Waves, Stratis these are of my favorite projects that currently exists in the altcoins sphere as they have a good working platform and allot of community support.

So that's why many of us depend on altcoins. Therefore if altcoin is lurking the price from btc,they are proportion in that case. Isn't it? On the other hand , btc is more popular than altcoins. Whichever the case I will support both of them because they are one of my sources of funds or extra income. It is popular for its value and trading factor so I keep going.

WAVES , ETH , NEM will grow more in coming years wait for it

If i had to guess, they became 'popular' early this year, then EXTREMELY popular around 4-5 months ago. If you look at the charts of almost every coin 4-5 months ago it almost looks like an exponential function

the value of bitcoin increasing so it makes a lot of investors to invest in altcoin, because altcoin one way other than bitcoin so you can get a profit although it is extremely difficult to obtain because the price of the bitcoin high

When the Bitcoin price hit $2000, lots of altcoins started and tried to takes advantage of the price. Many ICO's are started to scam people with their different ideas and techniques. Just 1% of the altcoins get a good value and get listed on good exchanges now.

Altcoins become popular becuase of the votality of the price. Yes you were right altcoin has a lot of earnings to offer thats why more investors invested in. That anyone could buy some cheaper price and ready to sell if earning already, so this means there is a money involved that altcoins got popular.

I think one year ago altcoins was very popular, because a lot of new projects are emerging that use altcoins, trading is one of the main triggers of the popular altcoin.

For me it's Bitstamp that made altcoins exist in my eyes. When they added XRP, I had BTC laying around there so I randomly bought some XRP. Rest is history. ty bitstamp.

With Ethereum, anyone can make a token which is similar to an altcoin and provide a service with it and sell it.

The reason there are so many ICOs now because many companies are creating tokens to sell to the public as shares in their company.

Last 2 years I think altcoins got more popular, because people were more encouraged to invest on online trading and investment as well as many campaigns involved to promote some altcoins. Also forums gave the knowledge about altcoins and how to invest in there to get more profit. Another point is that people tempt to invest in altcoins because bitcoin price got high. It’s not good to depend on one coin due to its risk on profit.

As many people wants to follow the trend of bitcoin, they created altcoin to taste also the success. Yeah last two years altcoin became popular like they sees it as an another way to make profit. Unlimited profit that they bother with bitcoin since you can only mine 21 million of it. And people sees also its potential in the market.

I guess altcoins became popular because of it's price variation and fluctuation. A lot of people are earning a lot because of altcoin trading. I think that's one of the best reason why altcoins existed. All you need to do is to find a cheap coin with a lot of potential in the market, buy low and sell high.

It's not that altcoins became popular, it is that ICOs and startup built around those models provide innovations, need, and liquidity, this coupled with the general crypto currency adoption makes it good reason to see them shine.

Alt coin has become popular because it gives a very promising profit, and some of the alt coin can give more profit than Bitcoin and trading alt coin is more profitable than bitcoin, many people gained more profit with trading alt coin, alt coin is really suitable for short term investment

I think altcoins became popular, when bitcoin started to become expensive. People looked for alternatives since trading btc is not quite commendable. The profit in trading altcoins is very promising. A lot of people are earning a lot of money because of altcoin trading. This is one of the best reason I can come up to.

Bitcoin was a great opportunity, but many people lost it because they didn't adapt early. People don't want to repeat that mistake with good alts. :)

Altcoin has a good price and the way how does it works. Altcoin became popular because of it at first the famous is bitcoin but now there is altcoin that make some noise hre in forum for how the way it process.

No, altcoin became popular by the value of Ethereum and Ripple growth very more in short time, special Ethereum from $6 per coin in October 2016, it reached to high than $400 per coin in May 2017, just 8 months for do that. Ripple better than, only one month from @400 sat reach to @7500 sat and falldown to @2500 in 2 weeks, then it rising up again reached high than @20k sat in May too.

Back in 2013 there were new coins released everyday, much like now. :D

As i put my feet on this cryptoworld i do notice on those days that there are some coins which are being launched and been included on the market but comparing it as of todays situation the popularity increase even more and there are lots of coins,ICOs do popped out everynow and then and time comes that most of them turns out to be shitcoin in the end.

Altcoins are destine to be popular because bitcoin are getting popular as well, we know bitcoin has it's limitation
therefore we can expect that devs are building their project using the concept of decentralization or blockchain.

ICO in particular and all the altcoin in general are booming strong. Despite the uncertainty of the market, they are becoming more and more popular. This makes all of us fall into a bubble, and it can explode at any time.

Everyone wants to buy into the next Bitcoin or the next Ethereum it's that simple.

It is because their are some altcoins which are worth to hold for long and they are working very good with lot of projects, and as everyone said altcoins are mostly created to make money fast buy pump and dump.

I think altcoins got popular 2 years or maybe last year when everyone was into faucets and claimed a lot from those. Now the ones that are popular are from ICO's, the tokens and coins you got out of the project.

Yeah, last 1-2 years it has been almost ridiculous. For a few months in the spring it seemed like every single coin (even the sh!tcoins and scamcoin) was doing well. It was as if people were buying BTC from all over and just throwing money at altcoins. By July many of them were gutted, but they're already recovering.

Yup last month all altcoins got value, and many people are invested in almost all altcoins. When this segwit2x announced from that time people are started to buy altcoins. Before ETH I think no one showed interest on altcoins. When the ETH stands in the market, and suddenly the price of the ETH increased people are started to believe in altcoins. 

because the bitcoin are so expensive tech team develop alternative coin that can trade and invest. most of them are low in price but because of continue mining and trading their value increase. it just like when the law of supply and demand....

I think it got popular just few years back because altcoin involved a lot of money and a lot of people are taking advantage of it. Altcoins are good for trading, you can earn a lot of money through altcoin trading. I think it's one of the best attribute of atlcoin.

Was it altcoin forum that popular here before bitcoin exploded above 500 dollars?  I remember in 2016, bitcoin was pretty stable at the 300-450 area for a while etc.  Then it got so high all the way to 500, then 1000 and beyond etc.  Then once it got that high, that is when i started reading about altcoins.  I noticed that many of the top altcoins were still very cheap prices etc.  So wouldn't that mean these altcoins that popular etc?

In my own opinion, altcoin started to be popular when bitcoin's price started to increase even the altcoins price thats why many people started to use altcoin. Bitcoin and altcoin has a big connection because some people says when you use bitcoin you need to try to use altcoin too for a more better earnings.

You can understand the capital from Bitcoin market (BTC/USD) will transfer to altcoin market after the price of Bitcoin stable. Because most trader are speculator in recent, they buy Bitcoin for the reason the value of it increase fast. After see altcoin on market increase fast than Bitcoin, they will transfer their Bitcoin to Altcoin, do not need create trap.

I think it was in 2016 or so. Bitcoin's scaling issues showed no end in sight, and people had had enough. It Dash and Eth went nuts, then Ripple finally took on this serious markets guy, I think from CME or something. His orders were, pump the old girl, and boy did he! (Kind of contradicted repeated previous public statements that they'd never pump XRP and would work against that, but hey if people are throwing money at you, who says no?)

Ripple cannot call is an altcoin, for me it just token asset and the value of it very high if compare with the potential or real value. We also know cryptocurrency is decentralization and Ripple doing the opposite this defition. Bank use this coin for transfer money = centralization.

Investors have found out about altcoins i guess 2 years ago, when ETH showed up, with great idea. They got more popular at the begining og 2017, because a lot of projects have exchanged fiat for crypto currencies and started to do their ICOs bounty campaigns and etc.

Altcoins became famous when Doge launched,  I think that brought lot of attention and investors. People couldn't believe that something so sill would by worth anything. lol

The most noticeable appearance and widespread of altcoins began approximately 2 years ago. Since then the variety of altcoins has reached the level of insanity.

The first altcoin was created in April of 2011, Namecoin was the first altcoin. But they really got so popular in 2016.

i think it shall owe to ETH, the smart contract makes it simple to develop a altcoin and the success of ETH is a huge demonstration, many people get into the market because of ETH

I think alternative coins will be popular if the value of it is constantly increasing or there are investment becomes beautiful.

when they made x1000. i saw altcoins months ago but i thought they are scam and trying to be new bitcoin and i said to myself there won't be another bitcoin we missed the train . 3 months later when coins made x100 i realized that there could be another bitcoin and we can still catch train

There must be time for altcoin to become popular as the case with bitcoin today. I see eth and bch as altcoins that are really tough and more potentially soaring than other altcoins.

Altcoins become poppular due to many reasons. First of all is that people want to learn more about blockchain and new technology inside cryptocurrencies. since bitcoin was created, it has opened a new way to make online currency and online smart contracts. Second, they want to earn more money from holding altcoins. There are many evidence prove that if you hold altcoins for a long time, you will become extremely rich. You will become rich even faster than holding bitcoin

I hope this could not achieve by altcoins in now or in future. Altcoins are available in the most names and multiple coins. If the coin is unique like bitcoin then it will get popular like bitcoin to non users of digital currencies.

We need some heavy amount investor to invest on altcoins such as BCH or ETH. I think in these anyone will compete with the bitcoin in near future.

Can someone tell me when these altcoins like waves, nem etc were available on bittrex?  Were they easy to buy a lot of it back then?


Is there a way to know when exactly certain altcoins got listed on bittrex?  Such as was waves listed there when it was 20 cents?  Or not until it was 1 dollar etc?  What about litecoin and those other coins?

Alts mainly got popular because people wanted to make more bitcoins imo.

In my opinion this year seems to be one among the important year for the growth of altcoins in a combined manner. Lots of altcoins gained good market compared to the past years as well a large investor base has got generated. I believe these all things happened just because of the price pumping that happened with ethereum.

Popularity came to altcoins, when more people started paying attention at Bitcoin and its growth. Then many people realized which potential can be hidden in crypto and started to make their alts. Some of them are extremely cool now (Monero, Ripple, DASH).

As i believe and i experienced myself this market is too big to be ruled by only one coin. There are different coins needed in different areas of life to be more efficient. I'd definetely take bitcoin over anything but that doesn't mean all alt coins are are useless or sth.

I think it is according to market situation when bitcoin market is more fluctuated then bitcoin demand increased and other altcoins demand decreased and when the bitcoin price will stable and having not too much fluctuation in result the other altcoin price will unexpected growing and you can get the chance to earn good profit from altcoins and in result the altcoins goes so popular.

and even now is only 1% of all peoples know about crypto.
