Title: Re: Transferring BTC Post by: optimator on May 17, 2013, 12:37:34 AM Bitcoin is a public ledger system. The bitcoins don't really exist in your wallet but in the public ledger.
Every node (bitcoin-qt) has a copy of that complete ledger. So when you send your bitcoins from an exchange to your wallet all the nodes record that transaction. When you bring your offline computer back online it will resync with the other nodes in the network and it will (once it gets the transaction) show you the correct balance. But the wallet.dat should be encrypted! Anyone who has access to unencrypted wallet.dat (or is able to decrypt it) have access to your bitcoins in that wallet. You can encrypt it in the bitcoin program or you can encrypt it independently (or both). Do not loose/forget the password! What you can do is use TrueCrypt coupled with DropBox and encrypt it on bitcoin-qt. |
