Title: What do you do during a panic attack?

I used to have a few short heartache from last month and had a serious panic attack I never had in my life.
It felt like I'm having a heart attack. I'm about to collapse, faint. I poured down some water on my head. Took long breaths, tried to sleep but the panic didn't stopped. It came for about an hour where are ran frantically from here and there taking long breaths.
I don't have anything to be depressed about but just had such attack first time in my life.
It was scary and the only feeling I got was I don't want to die.
Do anybody have the similar attacks? What should I do if I had it next time?

Keep calm and buy crypto :D  But for real, just breathe through it and try to remember this too shall pass, sometimes people need to take medication because of chronic panic attacks.

Slap my face and tell myself that nothing good will come out of panicking. That's if i'm alone. If i'm with a group of people i try to pretend i'm not panicking and it helps that they think i'm composed because i tend to relax a little bit and get a hold of myself.

Having had some bad panic attacks I can give some advice.

-Try to avoid having constant stress for a longer period of time, I know this might not be easy/possible depending on your situation.
-Don't try to avoid every stressy situation or you'll become locked in your house and it'll get worse.
-I have a breathing routine that I start whenever I feel an attack coming up (read this http://www.anxietycoach.com/breathingexercise.html)
-I take prescribed betablockers when I have to do something very stressful, which helps tremendously. I dose very low to diminish side effects but takes the edge off.
-Eat healty, sleep enough (7+ hours, 5 hours is not enough for anyone no matter what you think), exercise properly at least twice a week. (more important than you'd think)

just keep your cool, close your eyes and control your breathing, imagine that everything is okay and take any negative thoughts out of your head

When I get something's not similar to the panic attack, I try to get to a warm place, pr ferably ky bathroom, some place there are no people. And just concentrate on the present, feel the moment, and let the attack pass

Personally i do feel them sometimes but i dont know why specifically. It doesn't have a reason why I'm panicking in the first place. When I'm i that state, i anchor myself. I think about a very familiar and safe place in my head, breath and close my eyes

Try to learn some different breathing exercises so that if attack comes back than you may bea able to control and slow down your breathing which in turn will help in slowing down your heart. In through the nose and out through the mouth...BREATH :)

First try to avoid panicking, it makes the situation worsts you cannot think properly. But I take a deep breath.. As much as possible stay calm and pray.

Breath deeply, try to control my heart rate, if at home try taking a hot shower, analyze and rationalize where it's coming from.

I have never experienced an anxiety attack but when I am stressed or feel nervous/anxious, I take 4 very deep and long breaths. I then try to calm my mind and think about something that makes me genuinely happy.

The fact is that you need to know first what your problem is and why you have panic attacks. You probably need to start by trying to solve those problems and remove the source that radiates a panic.

Been there man, it's tough.  Like most are saying, just breath, you'll eventually get through it, and that's what you need to keep telling yourself, that it'll eventually be over.  It sounds like rubbish, but, when it's happening, to know that it will eventually end sometimes brings me relief.  Good luck!

The important is you know what to do if you experience it again, ask your Dr. for first aid or you need to do if it happen again and be relax and calm your self to thinks carefully what you need to do to survive. Bacuase when you panic it will throw all your ideas and knowledge how to survive.  :-*

For me, I just close my eyes and breathe slowly and pray. Try to refocus yourself and think of positive thoughts. Being with some you trust will also help especially if they know that you sometimes get panic attacks.

Like you i never was depressed and i was happy in general. i've had 3 very strong panic attacks through a ten year period. The last one which was the worst one, i can't even express with words how it felt.I even had several minor panic attacks days after.That week was awful.
It made me stop whatever i was doing at the time in my life, i went back to my homeplace and went through a period of refocus, balance and reevaluation of goals and life in general. Panic attacks are a strong message from you that something is very off.
It is a weird feeling when you do this and look back, it is like you just woke up and suddenly understand why your body reacted like this. I take it as a good thing, it means that in the back of your head you have an idea of what you want and where you want to be, but in the everyday life you go astray. Panic attacks, if you take the message, will get you back on your way.
'Its been a while since you posted, i hope you are good. But for longevity, food, exercise, meditation is what i found to be the solution. Every one of this has a huge impact in my life.

Fortunately I don't have often panic attacks, but when it happens, I use deep breathing and switch attention and concentrate on positive things, like nature or kittens  :)

When you are under panic attack maybe you need to call a friend that is not under panic, so he/she can help you keep calm and talk about what is your problem. Having a friend in your side is also good.

The first thing you need to do is to say no to all extra negativity in life you don't need. Don't go to forums filled with negative people and their horror stories. Life a normal life and seek help from  professionals who know what they are talking about. I don't necessarily mean a psychiatrist which may be constly but there is a lot of really good literature out there

When having a panic attack you must have a mindset that you must calm down for starters. In a panic attack you must have control over your own body and mind whereas you can avoid doing things that can make it worse. Panic attacks are a serious case and you must not take very sudden action. In a more simpler language you should avoid doing anything.

I had temperature and I had  salmonella and think what I did it was eating  a lot idk why in some kind of bad moment I eat and that is little relaxing me because I cant think about that thing and things are going more easy for me,there is a lot more less worry.

Stay relaxed try to keep quiet, close your eyes, yell and ponder what happened. Maybe you can wash your face. Keep your breath and stay calm. face everything that happens with prayer.

I know it's much easier said than done, but if you can try to get yourself calm, and reassure yourself that no matter what you're feeling, it's going to be okay, it will eventually be over.  Then, if you take long deep heavy breaths, slow, this should help amazingly.  I find lying on my back doing these breathing techniques are what helps me the most.

My therapist once tought me a good breathing technique: you should take one small breath and than breathe out as long as you can, repeat it as many times as necessory. The point is to take less oxygen than CO2 you breathe out.

It is a real mess, happened to me once or twice. In this case I take diazepam, but not too much, ask a doctor. And don't take it in other cases because it is addictive.

Hmm very uncomfortable. I used to have panic attacks few years ago. I struggled a lot to get myself to the normal track.
That is actually when I became very religious. I started reading the Bible and praying. It helped me to realize that only
God have the power over my life neither do I nor someone else and that we need to trust God. Maybe You are not a religious
person but I really do not know anything else that truly helps. I would never be religious if I did not have panic attacks

First of all try to take deep breaths and slowly step by step feel relaxed. Also, try to make positive and nice thoughts and the most important.... speak to yourself. Convince yourself that nothing bad is going to happen. Trust yourself and be the best friend of you.

I also experienced it. when panic attacks hit you can do the trick with a deep breath, Someone who experienced a panic attack may be difficult to breathe. Although there are some who do not experience this, breathing deeply can reduce stress and provide more oxygen intake into the brain so that we more easily control the mind, or it could be by calming ourselves first in a place that we feel comfortable.

Calm yourself by remembering that you are only having a panic attack and that nothing more serious is happening to you. Continue to take slow, deep, complete breaths

Breathing slowly and deeply. Anxiety can cause you to breathe very quickly, which makes both the mental and physical symptoms of a panic attack even worse. Stop and think. Think positively. Stand up for yourself. Relax your muscles.

I breath deeply and take my mind to a happy place, doing happy things.  As hard as it is I don't dwell on bad things but when I do I make myself thing of things that are fun and make me glad.

When panic attacks come, some parts of the body just feels stiff. Breathe deeply and slowly while touching parts of the body that you know will definitely respond immediately, such as the shoulders.

During the panic attacks, I count to 10. It really helps me. I advise you to breathe deeply and count to 10. You have to count slowly and completely concentrate on the account.

Pray and ask God for guidance, for all is his destiny. Immediately wake up and the spirit of panic, through clarity and sensitivity in analyzing everything that happens. How it will happen and it has happened, and do not easily make your own decisions.

When a person suffers a panic attack, the anxiety gets out of control, loses control and is frightened by that lack of control. "The heart rate increases, breathing becomes difficult, there is hyperventilation, increased temperature and tremor."

"The autonomic nervous system is triggered and you have to reassure him by transmitting the feeling that there is no danger, that there is no extreme situation and that what happens is not serious. By changing the focus of attention and the importance we give to the symptoms of the panic attack, they diminish. "

The best way to achieve this is:
• Do and think about something else.
• Change the subject of conversation.
• Get to work on something.
• Carry out any activity that allows you not to give importance to the symptoms you are having.
• Instead of hyperventilating, breathe more slowly.

I used to have a few short heartache from last month and had a serious panic attack I never had in my life.
It felt like I'm having a heart attack. I'm about to collapse, faint. I poured down some water on my head. Took long breaths, tried to sleep but the panic didn't stopped. It came for about an hour where are ran frantically from here and there taking long breaths.
I don't have anything to be depressed about but just had such attack first time in my life.
It was scary and the only feeling I got was I don't want to die.
Do anybody have the similar attacks? What should I do if I had it next time?

be calm and if possible call someone to accompany you. if it is severe, call 911 and wait calmly.
do diet and exercise.

The Four Steps:
Relax.
Stop Negative Thinking.

Here's How:
Step 1. Relax.
Relax by taking slow, deep, complete breaths. Calm yourself by remembering that you are only having a panic attack and that nothing more serious is happening to you. Continue to take slow, deep, complete breaths. Slow, deep, complete breaths will relax your body, which is the first step to reversing the release of adrenaline.

Step 2. Stop Negative Thinking.
Stop negative thinking by shouting the word "STOP!!!" really loud inside your head. By shouting the word "STOP" you are interrupting the emergency message that your brain is sending to your adrenal glands. Often people having a panic attack get into an endless loop repeating the same catastrophic thoughts over and over in their head. Interrupting this endless loop gives you the opportunity to replace the scary message with a calming one.

Step 3. Use Coping Statements.
A coping statement is a positive statement that is at least as strong as the catastrophic statement that you have been scaring yourself with. Replace the negative thought with a positive one. Choose a statement that addresses the negative thought.

For example, if you think that you are having a heart attack (a common fear during a panic attack) then you might be saying something in your head like, "Oh my God, I'm having a heart attack" or, "I'm gonna die, oh my God, I'm gonna die!" After you shout the word "STOP!" immediately replace the fear thought with a positive statement that helps you to cope with the situation, such as "I'm only having a panic attack and it will be over in three minutes if I relax" or, "My fear is making my heart pound harder, my heart is fine."

If you feel afraid hearing footsteps behind you on the street you might say, "I've walked down this street hundreds of times" or, "I walk alone on the street every night when I come home from work; what I hear behind me is someone else who is walking home from work."

Other coping statements might be, "I've gotten through this situation many times before and I can get through it again" or, "I am fine, everything is fine."

Brainstorm the kinds of fearful thoughts that bring on panic for you and then make a long list of coping statements that you can look at when you need to rather than trying to think of coping statements in the middle of a panic attack.

Note: If your fear is in response to a real danger I suggest that you consider making new choices that address those fears. If you are concerned about your health consult with your doctor.

Step 4. Accept Your Feelings.
Accepting your feelings is very important. Minimizing this experience usually serves to perpetuate it.

Start by identifying what emotion you are feeling. Most panic attacks are caused by the emotion of fear or some variation of fear. Identify the emotion you are feeling and find the reason that you feel it.

Validate that feeling and the reason for it. If you are having a panic attack before giving a speech, you are afraid because it's scary. Stage fright is a common cause of fear and panic. If you're afraid that you're having a heart attack, it's certainly valid to be afraid of that. If you are afraid of footsteps behind you on the street it's reasonable to be afraid that something bad might happen to you.

In all of these cases take the appropriate precautions. Have a regular check up so that you know that your heart is healthy. Walk in a well-lit area and be aware of your surroundings on the street. Walk like a warrior and not like a victim. These are all important precautions to ensure your safety. Then, when you use a coping statement that reminds you that you had a check up recently and that your heart is fine, you can reassure yourself that it's okay to be afraid, knowing that you are safe.

Fear is a positive emotion that reminds you to take care of yourself. Listen to your feelings, take good care of yourself, and keep your emotions in proportion to the situation by keeping an appropriate perspective.

Many people have stopped having panic attacks after learning these steps. However, there is a deeper solution to permanently resolving panic and anxiety responses, fully giving you emotional freedom and happiness. Your mind has the power to significantly influence your negative responses in all situations. To deal with it, I took some chill pills, and right now drinking a beer,
but I don't recommend that. Better answers above that I will be noting.

Proper breathing, socializing (even if just online), getting lost in something you enjoy and getting good sleep all help.
Avoid caffeine and you can look into trying maca root. Helps my panic attacks a lot. Also, check your toothpaste for xylitol. That stuff gives some people panic attacks.

I have panic attacks too. During them i try to breath normaly and im telling myself that everything is going to be allright. I know its hard but i just try to think positive. Meditacion and yoga helps too :)

I just experienced this about two months ago. I am not quite sure what is happening to me by that time but I just recalled a very poignant event in the past and suddenly I became very uneasy then my body and hands are trembling, I also can't stand very well by that time and can't even hold on to things sturdily. What I did to manage myself was just sit down and drink water; it helped actually in as quick as 10 Minutes.

I find that the best tactic for tackling a panic attack is not to fight it. In my experience, the worst panic attacks I've faced were the ones during which I kept telling myself to "calm down." The panic attack is scary enough without you beating yourself up over it while it's happening. I find that a very effective way of dealing with the anxiety is to retire to a quiet room or area, even if the best I can manage is a bathroom stall. I allow myself to feel the worry, I give myself permission to be afraid. I tell myself that it will not be permanent, that it will pass, that everything is going to be okay. I breathe through it, and keep telling myself to breathe, to let the fear pass over and through me, and that everything will be okay.

I have the same complaint. This attack is such a silent killer, that I can't ignore. Since it's only me myself know how it feels, I always try to make peace with myself whenever the panic comes up, I just try to take a deep breath, inhale it and exhale it slowly for several times and try to take my brain to think cool things, cool people in my life, I go see the green to get fresh air, stay there as long as possible until I feel calm. Avoid nicotine and caffeine during cooling down process.

It's really hard to be in the middle of the situation and you get panic. It seems like you are able to do things you're not doing before. I think that is adrenalin rush thing? But it will be helpful if you will stay a little calm in able to think properly. Think what will happen later after that situation that you might regret so it will allow you to overcome the panic attack.

I breathe heavily. Breathing and counting my breaths really help me from panicking. I like to count my breaths loudly.

When we experience panic attack we sometimes forget that this life has been outlined or forgot that God is great above all the problems we face, for that should be when we experience panic attack the first thing we must do is remember God then pleaded with Him pacified our hearts and eased all our affairs because everything that happens in this world is by His will.

When panic attacks I'll try to calm myself by drinking water and inhale,exhale then try not to think too much ot listen to the music.

If panic attack happens it is very important for us to change our focus, as for how can be done by using the moment, this moment I call it "cool mind".
 to master this attitude we just do 2 simple steps "Ignore feeling and manage Mindset"

I will always, but always recommend calling 911, because having panic attack is a really serious thing and you will end up in hospital, so yeah. You can't calm down when you have panic attack, only meds can calm down. And I recommend to people to try to learn the difference between panic attack and anxiety attack. When you have panic attack you can't calm down yourself, and when you have anxiety attack you can help yourself.

Hi! I've experienced anxiety/panic attacks when i was in highschool mostly. Then random events thru college and until I was working. What helped me was I was assured that nothing was going to stop my body from breathing and chances of fainting is very very small. Sometimes other people like me panic more when they think that they are running out of breathe when actually YOU ARE OVER BREATHING. The sensation is the same and it's quite scary TBH.

So what I did/do (ofc, it varies from people to people):

- Condition my mind this is "just" a panic attack, nothing bad will happen
- Normalize my breathing, make sure I don't breathe to fast
- Think of something else or go to a different spot to tell my brain to relax (fight or flight)

Feeling shortness of breath and shortness are the main symptoms of panic attacks. However, these symptoms can get worse if we just take a short breath. Try to breathe the stomach. When the attack comes, take a deep breath, shake your shoulders, and focus on deep breathing and remove through the stomach. Place your hands on your stomach to feel it

Keep calm and buy crypto :D  But for real, just breathe through it and try to remember this too shall pass, sometimes people need to take medication because of chronic panic attacks.

Talk to my self
Remind yourself that the panic attack will end and will not make you faint. Understanding faint physiology will help. Someone will faint when his blood pressure is low. When panic attacks, we may feel faint, but actually not because our blood pressure does not go down.

It may be easy to say relaxed words, but when panic attacks come, some parts of the body just feel stiff. Breathe deeply and slowly while touching parts of the body that you know will definitely respond immediately, for example the shoulder.

the first time I had a panic attack was the high school time, then I was a math test, my favorite field, but the time of the replication stayed a little but still a lot of questions I had not done, I was panicked, I did not know what to do, I took a breath and prayed to God, I calmed myself and tried to think clearly, I did the easy thing, the end of the story I could not do all the questions, just two things I did not work, but all the things I did was right, From that scheme I started working on a simple matter first

Panic attack's are very scary. One thing my doctor recommended was breathing through a straw (this is similar to breathing into a brown paper bag), the idea is it slows your breathing which in return slows your hear rate. This will allow you to feel like you can breath again and work on slowing the other physical responses your body down to it's normal state. GOOD LUCK

Last year I often get panic attacks. This is a very terrible and nasty feeling. I try to avoid stress and a lot of people. I take sedatives and try to sleep well.

I am the type of person who is easy to panic and easy to stress. When I am nervous or panicked my hands and feet will usually feel cold, dry mouth, my stomach feels nauseous, heart palpitations and my body starts to vibrate. Usually when experiencing gejela like this I need a lot of water. In one swallow I can spend 2-3 bottles of mineral water, and after drinking enough water I will usually feel better.

When I was in to the state of panic I then not trying to be calm and don’t haste took the decision.<br />Because if any of the state of panic usually mind often to bring emotion.<br />And I always pray in order to on god that can be overpowering in any circumstances.<br />Now I still learn to remain calm at the time is freaking out

Stop negative thinking by shouting the word "STOP!!!" really loud inside your head. By shouting the word "STOP" you are interrupting the emergency message that your brain is sending to your adrenal glands

When I get something's not similar to the panic attack, I try to get to a warm place, pr ferably ky bathroom, some place there are no people. And just concentrate on the present, feel the moment, and let the attack pass

I usually do is relax myself by breathing smoothly. Just deep inhale and exhale process. Then I assess the current situation.

xanax is good. but i use it only as last resort. as soon as i feal the panick kicks in i start breathing tehnic. there are various on internet. like breathe in for 8 seconds, hold for 4 and out for 7 idk now. if i remember corectly that "moves the brain out" of primal part fight flight of freeze. also i spread as much as i can. if you put your hands in the air in the V shape it increases confidence. some people do that before going on stage. basicaly i refuse to cluch into myself. i head its better to walk or run rather then go to bad, becouse brain thinks oh shit there is some danger we need to get the f out of here, so when you walk your brain gets the massage: we went away from danger. i also go away from noisy places and away from people, couse i get easyaly frustrated by noise (headphones or earplugs help here), definitely hate car noise. also i tend to go to disociative states, and think other people can see im not right in my head, so i avoide eye contact so noone would ask me anything. i live in noisy city, it helps to know the city well in sense, know places where you can "hide". i hide from people and from noise in for example: WC, parks, lonelyplaces, nature, dog parks, lybraries. my friend finds it helpful to awnser this in his head: name 3 tings you can hear right now, name 3 things you can feal/touch, name 3 tings you taste now, name 5 tings you see now.

Holding your breath for atleast 45 secs would do the trick...but if you have a girlfriend or a boyfriend you can invite him/her over so that you guys can makeout this because in the process of kissing the person you love you hold your breath for atleast  20secs so in this process your panick attack will reduce gradually. this is a very credible method for taming panic attack.

In the movie, 3 Idiots, the guy just sings "all is well, all is well" and feels better. Condition yourself to respond calmly to a set of words, which you can tell yourself in case you panic.

Always bring a paper bag for you big enough for you to breathe in it for a few minutes or until you stabilize your breathing. Usually, you will start to hyperventilate during a panic attack so this would be a good precautionary measure. Concentrate on your breathing during your attacks and if you can, go to a place that is not too crowded or noisy as this can add more 'panic'. You can also do relaxing exercises to condition yourself for when you get an attack.

I used to have a few short heartache from last month and had a serious panic attack I never had in my life.
It felt like I'm having a heart attack. I'm about to collapse, faint. I poured down some water on my head. Took long breaths, tried to sleep but the panic didn't stopped. It came for about an hour where are ran frantically from here and there taking long breaths.
I don't have anything to be depressed about but just had such attack first time in my life.
It was scary and the only feeling I got was I don't want to die.
Do anybody have the similar attacks? What should I do if I had it next time?

Well you probably DO have something that's bothering you. Subconsciousness often speaks to us in this way. Try resolving your problems that you have for an extended period of time. That's very unhealthy and after some time it starts pushing you towards depression.
Deal with your problems as best as you can, don't run from them because sooner or later they'll catch you.

Trying to take a deep breath can actually aggravate the panic because in such situations it is difficult to breathe deeply. Concentrating on the breath will let the body focus on the other side of the breath without having to breathe deeply. "This will keep you focused with the natural flow of breathing, and not force the body to rush into deep breathing and aggravate panic.

It's easy to say that when you never had a panic attack. The best way to fight a panic attack is right breathing

The breath must necessarily be shorter than the exhalation.
It is important to maintain balance - do not oversaturate the brain with oxygen (frequent breathing can cause hyperventilation).
The main thing is the rhythm: breathing into One Two, delay of One Two, an exhalation for One Two Three, delay of One and so on.


This will help you quickly calm down and get rid of a panic attack. The main thing is to quickly realize the problem and begin to control breathing

Hey! great topic - I used to have panic attacks several years ago. It actually might mean a lot of things
I suggest getting ready for deep work with a specialist to get to the root cause - it might be a repressed affect, something from within your psyche.
It took my at least 18 months to work through mine

But don't take a mechanistic approach of "I just need to breathe" - though it is a great idea to save the moment if you have something important to do right now and cannot find a safe place to go through the experience. Having someone who you trust and who cares about you is also very important and helpful.
Try to get grounded and live through it, do not repress. Thats my suggestion

Yup I get these from time to time, usually when I'm smoking weed though.

Basically, it's like the world is closing in. Breathing becomes increasingly difficult. Reminds me of speaker/microphone feedback.

Best thing I found to do is to let whoever I'm with (usually they happen when I'm with people, sweet I know) what's happening.

"Hey, gonna lay down and roll my eyes as far back into my head as possible. Could you grab me some water and crack the window?"

I lay down and my only job is to watch my breathe, and feel the sensations. Having a panic attack? Nothing you can do about it.

Might as well really inspect it, become a scientist about it. What is this feeling? Pay close attention....

Wait a minute, I'm doing something about it...

Right around this point I drift off into the weirdest dreams, then come back feeling weak, hot, and cold.


Friends all thinkin wtf?

But really, shit is terrifying when it's happening..  Hope this can help. Can't imagine an hourly long attack.

Take deep breaths and think happy thoughts. Remember that all that's happening is normal and that it'll pass really soon.
