Title: Satoshi Buckets - A game with a winning strategy! 1 BTC GIVEAWAY, 0.3 BTC LEFT.
Post by: bitshy on May 22, 2013, 08:17:22 PM
Come play Satoshi Buckets (http://satoshibuckets.bitshy.org), a game with a winning strategy! Here's the rules:

  • Put your coins in a bucket. Minimum bet is ฿0.005.
  • Every round one bucket falls, if all buckets have at least ฿0.05.
  • The coins in that bucket are distributed among the backers of the other buckets.
  • The buckets that did not fall continue into the next round.
  • Winning buckets can keep winning over and over again!
  • GIVEAWAY: Every day until June 27, one random backer will get ฿0.1!

Hey everyone, I made a new Bitcoin betting game (http://satoshibuckets.bitshy.org). Here are the rules:

  • There are three buckets: red, green, and blue.
  • Put your coins in a bucket. Minimum bet is ฿0.01.
  • Every round (~10 minutes) one bucket falls.
  • The coins in that bucket are distributed among the backers of the other buckets.
  • The buckets that did not fall continue into the next round.

The three buckets are:

  • red (42% chance to fall): 1RbucktdB7agZuX1qdjce4PYbURRaezc7
  • green (33% chance to fall): 1GbucketpG4rHKict89wWGJLhM1jD9RCac
  • blue (25% chance to fall): 1Bbucket59CEs93UrZDKeDJ9cETxFEm9xE

You can see more information at Satoshi Buckets (http://satoshibuckets.bitshy.org). My recommended strategy is to bet on whichever bucket has the highest long-term expected value. (Click on the link to see the calculated expected values.) This game is provably fair! It also doesn't cause blockchain spam, since rounds happen at most once per new block. Try it out!

Yes! I learned a lot about using bitcoind and about web development! Thanks. :-)

Just a heads up. I changed the minimum amount per round requirement. Now it's only necessary for there to be ฿0.01 in each bucket for a round to be triggered on new block. This means that, at this exact moment, anyone betting on the green bucket has an expected payout of 120%.

Cool idea man.
I think a more proffesional design will atrract more people to place bets.
Also, you can make the minimum even lower

I can do graphic design for you.  I'm not very established on the forums so I can do it for a low price.
(it's a win-win, you get a low price and I get more rep on the forums!)

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I don't think setting a lower minimum is a good idea -- the transaction cost starts eating up all of the bet. Right now the minimum is around $1 per bet. I don't think that's too much.

The Goat Master, send me a PM.

Hi pheaonix, thank you for reporting this! I will reimburse you manually, and I am already at work trying to prevent this problem in the future. Due to an wrong coding, Satoshi buckets can't find the return address.

Technical details: I'm using the change output to find the return address. This doesn't work when a transaction doesn't have a change output, like this one. So now I have to look at the script signature to find the return address.

Satoshi Buckets has passed the ten round mark! In the last ten rounds:

  • Red won 5 times, with ฿0.10 = $12.91 received total.
  • Green won 8 times, with ฿0.121 = $14.75 received total.
  • Blue won 7 times, with ฿0.071 = $8.65 received total.

You earn some amount whenever a bucket falls. If your bucket falls, you only earn 0.5% of your original value. If someone else's bucket falls, you split half of the fallen bucket with the other people that invested in your bucket.

Every round, one bucket falls. However, if there is not at least 0.01 BTC in each bucket, the round is skipped.

Hey folks! I've raised the minimum amount in each bucket per round to 0.02 BTC. This will reduce the amount of money that is chewed up in Bitcoin transaction fees. This should also raise the expected value of all the current buckets!

So i'm a little unclear on the payout schema here.

When a bucket falls the total is cut in half and pays the other 2 buckets (which didn't fall).

How is the payout distributed inside each bucket... proportionally? So put in 0.1 and 10 others put in 0.01... I would get half the payout going to that bucket.. or 25% of the fallen bucket?

Post by: i3lome on June 07, 2013, 05:52:39 AM
To me it seems  it 1 bucket falls with .01 btc  ~3% is subtracted and the rest goes to each person with a bet on a bucket

Say Ted bids 0.01 Red, BoB bids 0.01 Blue and James goes 0.01 Green.

Red Falls
Ted loses his 0.01
0.01- 3% (server cost)= ~0.008

Bob and James receive ~0.004 and goes to the next Round.

Then the fun continues

Hi firefop!

When a bucket falls, with value X, the following happens:

  • An estimated transaction fee is subtracted from X.
  • The house fee is applied to X. (At the moment, that's 0.05%.)
  • X is split in half. One half goes to one bucket, the other half goes to the other.
  • Each half is distributed fairly among the backers of the other buckets, proportionally to how much they backed the other bucket by.

So in case that you had 0.1 BTC in a bucket, and 10 other people had 0.01 BTC in that bucket, you would get half of the payout going to that bucket. That's roughly 25% of the value of the fallen bucket. This is true regardless of whatever the other standing bucket contains.

They are falling. :-) You just gotta be patient. This game is all based on the blockchain and its inherent unpredictibility. So sometimes it takes a while, but it will fall.

Rest assured that when a problem does occur, I will take care of it. Thanks for letting me know your concern!

I'll have to think about this. I have already thought about implementing a companion game where you bet on which bucket is going to fall. If you get it right, you get some of the fallen bucket's money. Otherwise, the money goes to the people who played in that bucket.

But unless there is some demand for that, I'm going to leave the buckets as they are for now, and let the player base grow, before trying something too different.

I did a more in-depth analysis of the bucket history. Here's what I extracted.

Mean payouts:

  • R: x1.05207502692
  • G: x0.843458794071
  • B: x1.13571379612

One-round winnings:

  • R: x0.868529463366
  • G: x0.680212456483
  • B: x0.387926613817

Long-term winnings:

  • R: x1.21928174665
  • G: x1.12886322565
  • B: x1.47710518338

Explanation:

  • Mean payouts: The overall expected value of spending 1 BTC indiscriminately on a given bucket. That is, without any kind of strategy, other than "always bet on a particular bucket".
  • One-round winnings: The overall expected value of winning a single round, immediately.
  • Long-term winnings: The overall expected value of winning a single round, after many rounds.

I think it's interesting that a game with simple rules results in so much unknown behavior. I think it's also interesting that the green bucket has been losing so much lately. You'd expect it to always be somewhere in the middle!

Changes have been made:

  • Reduced the minimum bet to ฿0.005. (Was ฿0.01.)
  • Increased the minimum round amount to ฿0.025. (Was ฿0.02.)

This is the best time to try out Satoshi Buckets! The house fee is 0.5% for one more day (then it will be raised to 1%, to try and cover the costs of running the server). The minimum bet is very low now, so it's a good time to try it out.

Also, every time you win you keep going onto the next round. So at the end of the day, a single bet can count multiple times in the giveaway!

Warning: The red bucket on blockchain.info is temporarily out of sync with the actual red bucket. So ignore whatever blockchain.info says right now. This was caused by a floating point rounding error, and it has been fixed moving forward. The current sync issue should just resolve itself with time.

"Every round one bucket falls, if all buckets have at least ฿0.025"

all buckets have atleast 0.025 but no buckets fell is there any reason why am I missing something?  The rounds just keep restarting and the chance percentage keeps going up.

Sorry about the inconvenience! Sometimes one of the bets takes a long time to confirm.

The site tallies up all the bets, including the unconfirmed ones. Once every bucket has a confirmed ฿0.025, one bucket falls. But if some bet takes a long time to confirm, it won't be part of the round, so a round won't trigger.

First giveaway day results are coming right up!

FIRST GIVEAWAY DAY RESULTS!

There were 13 fallen buckets on June 11, 2013, in the GMT time zone. In total, there were 68 entries in the giveaway. The last block hash of any fallen bucket was 00000000000000c3201f1711f70ef1560aa987be5a797bd42a702c09312200c6, which, when divided by 68, gives us a remainder of 10. That means the 11th entry wins.

So who was the winner?

A little bit of math about the giveaway:

There were 68 entries yesterday. Each 0.005 BTC bet was worth about 2.5 entries on average. Each 0.005 BTC bet gave you around 4% chance to win the giveaway. That means that each 0.005 BTC bet gives you 4% chance to earn 0.1 BTC -- that's 0.004 BTC expected value -- beyond what you already earn from playing Satoshi Buckets.

IN OTHER WORDS, minimum bets are about 80% cheaper thanks to the giveaway. The expected return of a minimum bet is much more than 100%!

These are much better odds than, say, SatoshiDice. (That's why this is a giveaway, not a lottery.)

There have been some rather huge buckets lately! There was a round with R=0.125, G=0.19, B=0.15. That was the biggest round yet!

If things like this happen more often, I'll raise the minimum round threshold to 0.05 BTC per bucket, to prevent people from winning a large bucket with a much, much smaller bet amount. (This would once again also reduce back and forth transaction fees.)

SECOND GIVEAWAY DAY RESULTS!

This time there were 32 fallen buckets, for a total of 206 entries in the giveaway.

THIRD GIVEAWAY DAY RESULTS!

This time I went with a slightly different method of selecting the winner, which is a lot easier to administer manually and less error prone. (It also slightly benefits people who enter in smaller rounds over larger rounds. Sorry, but I do think the simplification is worth it.) Essentially, the block hash is now used to pick the winning transaction, and then to select an entry at random from it.

So, the last considered block was 00000000000000e9e6d637cadd9059c0ab1cf11175b8f25722ad00270fd01265. This selects the 19th transaction, 5fda6b83c423cad6fdf692937bc5033bd06fa0cc613120fd88a3ce628287008e, and the first entry from that transaction.

CONGRATULATIONS 1BdHQJKjQBn3eKpLWBNNw9kqURrPDRopeY, YOU WIN 0.1 BTC!

transaction index = (block hash / 256) % number of transactions
winning entry index = block hash % number of entries in chosen transaction
These indices are 0-based, not 1-based.

Winner:

Last block hash chooses 1st entry from 19th transaction.

Seems like a great idead. Might participate when I have the time.

Yay! :-)

Satoshi Buckets is a lot more fun when multiple people are playing. You see the buckets go up and down in real time.

Satoshi Buckets is back!

Satoshi Buckets was offline for a few days due to a hardware failure (look in the other thread for the drama and the mystery and the details), but it is officially up and running now.

The giveaway continues!

Coming up: fourth giveaway results. But first, an announcement.

ANN: The bucket minimum per round has been increased to 0.05 BTC.

This will result in smaller transaction fees, and more fluidity (since the minimum bet is now one tenth of the round minimum). This change was instituted at a time when the red bucket had 0 BTC and the green and blue buckets had 0.05 BTC, so nobody was negatively affected. (The expected value of the red bucket went down, but nobody was betting there. The expected values of the green and blue buckets went up.)

FOURTH GIVEAWAY RESULTS

This time, we considered transactions from 14th to the 18th, since there was an interruption of service. There were 33 transactions considered. The last block hash was , so the 22nd transaction was picked, and the 3rd entry from that transaction is the winner.

So ...

Hi nice idea but your "next round in" timer is not working properly.
It counts down the all of a sudden it jerks and starts counting back up again.
if I refresh the page the counter is on a totally different number.
I had you open on my iPad and its counter was totally different to my computer.
The counter chance factor rises and rises to over 90 % and then goes back to 50%
 with nothing happening.
Please can you explain what is going on & yes the wagers are all on 0.05 or over.

Thank you

Hi dirty dog. Thanks for the feedback!

The round timer counts the time since the last block, and gives you the time that you can expect a new block. It's independent of when a round is actually triggered or not -- it resets every time a new block is found. As you know, a round is triggered when a new block is found, as long as all buckets have 0.05 BTC or more.

It can happen that the web site says all buckets have 0.05 BTC or more, but a round isn't triggered on the next block. This happens only when one of the transactions doesn't get confirmed in the new block. This transaction will usually get confirmed in the next block, so sometimes there is a one round delay. There isn't much that can be done about this.

There was a bug I found earlier today with rounds not triggering that was caused by a floating point error. (Basically, the server thought there were only 0.04999999 BTC, not 0.05 BTC, so it didn't trigger.) But I fixed that, so there shouldn't be any more problems with rounds getting triggered.

Hi

Thanks for explanation, I am really enjoying the game, however the red bucket with the highest % odds (42%) to fall, refuses to fall, great for the investors of that bucket, but not for me. Is there anyway we can see a history of previous games, so that we can monitor how buckets have fallen in the past??

Once again great game, I might just become a regular.

There isn't currently a history page, but you can download history.csv (http://satoshibuckets.bitshy.org/live/history.csv), a file that contains all of the bucket history. You can open it in a text editor like notepad, or in a spreadsheet program like Excel. You can also click on the buckets to see the individual bucket history.

Glad you're enjoying it!

This red bucket is making me rich! :-D

Red bucket has been really lucky today, and yesterday!

The last couple of days I tried a different set-up for round minimum. I consider it a failed experiment, and we're back at 0.05 BTC minimum per round. Just a heads up.

I won the giveaway! :-D

Congrats!

Hi Bitshy.

I noticed you have not posted winners since day 6 ??

I know your site is a bit quite of late, I lost all mine so I will have to wait for a refill before I can play again ;P

I was not a big fan of different BTC amounts depending on bucket, as it minimized the ability for a player to take advantages of unbalanced buckets.

I certainly think you are on to something with your game, however I am not sure if buckets will ever become mainstream.

Having to wait a good couple of minutes for the BTC to clear is definitely a big disadvantage compared to your competitors that are instant.

There is certainly a fortune to be made with the right game, (I wish I had your ability to create) I just went to  https://just-dice.com/ You can't believe the volume over one bet per second.

If you could imitate that wow.

Keep on programming
cheers

PS. Why not put your website as your signature, free advertising, and that way I can go straight to your website from this thread.

GIVEAWAY RESULTS #7!

Due to a lower transaction volume, I clumped together the last two days with giveaway day #7. This gives 28 transactions, which is around the same volume as the previous giveaways -- so I don't think anyone has really been hurt. This means that the giveaway can last a bit longer, too.

So, having said that....

CONGRATULATIONS 1H7E7YqMoWQZsUCumbvyASYJzpnz3dudaB, YOU WIN 0.1 BTC! (https://blockchain.info/tx/70a5ebdd5fbd29baacbf58a7ef6442515117c244e17aa5cfa1d86e81f5f2bd4d)

Thank you for your thoughts and your encouragement! I'm sorry about the slowness of posting the giveaway. The last couple days have been very complicated for me in real life.

I reverted the "different bucket minimums" change, so we're back at ฿0.05 round minimum. It's a lot simpler and quite a bit more interesting, like that.
