If you don't see the point of worthless posts, well frankly, don't make worthless posts. There's plenty of opportunity in the newbie section to make valuable posts.

I see the point of making worthless posts for me: I'm making this post, to escape from newbie island.

From the perspective of the moderators or other users I can't see the point, because the hurdle - while annoying - is easy to overcome.

I like the idea of a tiny initial fractional charge for posting; plenty of other forums out there have a small one-time fee to keep the trolls and spammers out.  It is a bit of a hassle to build up five newbie posts so that I can thank the cudaminer devs and post my rig specs for feedback.

Robots don't like fluff, which is a well known fact.  These fluff posts are actually spambot repellent.   ;)

What sucks isn't having to come up with five posts... any of us could do that in a matter of minutes, blindfolded and standing on our heads...

what sucks is posting five messages... then having to lurk here for four freakin' hours to gain access to the message board for which we came here to participate...

I am not here to debate Bitcoins and Bitcoin companies and Bitcoin fees and all that jazz...

I am here because I utilize a specific website that will only communicate to its users through a message board on this site...

So, yes, there is a website owner out there... we'll call him 'Peter'... who has a wonderful entertainment website that is tons of fun to use...

but if you want to comment on it, or if you want to report a bug, you have to come here and be a newb for FOUR HOURS before you are allowed to post your comments/complaints on his own message board...

maybe that is genius...

what if you bought something from Walmart that was broken... and then you couldn't return it until you went through four hours of a 'How To Return Something' orientation seminar...

it would certainly cut down on their returns, huh?

like I said... his name must be 'Richard'...

Your five posts reveal something about the kind of critter you are. You are posting to readers who wonder whether you will say anything worth reading.

How many worthless posts would you be willing to read? (Me neither).

Think of it as a maturity test.       :)

even a small fractional cost wouldn't be effective against spammers.. if it was cheap enough to not be a deterrent to user growth. Maybe it would be better if there was an option to donate? Similar to reddit gold or something.

I honestly needed 20 attempts at solving the reg captcha. I wonder if bots are able to register at all, given humans already have a hard time doing that.

Title: Re: What is the point of 5 worthless posts?

Title: Re: What is the point of 5 worthless posts?

This said, coinvisitor (may it rest in pieces) had a pretty nice one click captcha, I'd say humans were able to solve it in 95% of all cases. Wondering why that isn't used more widespread.

And don't get me started on those slide captchas (I currently can't came up with the name.) Those guys have terrible performance problems, more often than not those captchas wouldn't load at all.

Still don't get it?... Many people earn permanent "ignore" status before they even get out of the newbie quarantine zone.

For others, the "ignore" button gets pushed later, after they try a few troll posts and readers give them the benefit of a small doubt by looking up their post history.

If you post worthless posts, you will be treated as a worthless poster sooner or later, after which you just post into a vacuum. Not a bad system, all in all.

Post away!

It's not "punishment". It's just that in this forum nobody needs to read posts from people they perceive to be making worthless noise. No emotion needed. You can ignore whomever you wish, but they can ignore you too.

Someone who posts nothing but junk eventually winds up talking only to himself/herself and nobody cares. Someone who pushes the "ignore" button out of spite or mean-spiritedness locks himself out of reading potentially-valuable posts. That's OK too - self-inflicted wounds.

People can always turn "ignore" back on or off if they change their minds about the nature of a poster.

I already know a lot about BTC so there's not much I want to post in Newbies!

I remember having a similar feeling, but look at it this way...

If you can't think of anything worthwhile to say - any worthwhile contribution to make - while you're in newbie quarantine, then why would that change if you were suddenly allowed to post anywhere?

The best way out of your dilemma is to think of useful things to post - form a habit that will make people eager to read your stuff no matter what thread it's in.

I think newbies have the impression that only newbies read the newbie forum and that only other newbies will read their posts. Not so - many/most/all of the regulars read newbie stuff. Everyone was a newbie at some point.

Bottom line to OP's question though - the only point of making 5 worthless posts is to depict yourself as someone who makes worthless posts. It's a much wiser tactic to make five worthwhile posts, but everyone has to figure things out in their own way.

4 hours is annoying .

Yeah but they'll be over quick if you'd actually search the forums to learn. You may be restricted from posting elsewhere but you're not restricted from reading. Go learn a few things and it'll make your 4 hours fly quicker. I'm not sure but i think you can still mark a thread as watched. So if you bump into an interesting thread while you wait to complete your 4 hours you can keep an eye on that thread and participate in it once you graduate from the nube section. The key is to be productive. If you complain a lot bout being "stuck" in the nube section it seems that you won't be of much help to the community. Just keep all this in mind.

I would imagine that non-Newbie status posters rarely take a look at this forum. While I agree with some sort of mechanism to insure that new accounts are legitimate users that have a positive interest in things, I feel the current mechanism only fills the the Newbie section with fluff and non important topics, and only provides a 4 hour wait time for bots/spammers to do any damage.

I don't have a cure all answer to this problem, maybe a time based system where posts are initially limited and additional posting cap razed as the account matures by age or # of posts. Also maybe implement the ability to reduce an accounts posting cap if any of the posts are flagged as spam or offensive.

Just some thoughts from a newbie who needs to make 5 posts to be able to use this forum, while simultaneously trying to suggest improvements to the process in the spirit of the forum.

Title: Re: What is the point of 5 worthless posts?
Post by: Zaih on May 26, 2013, 04:21:36 PM
It's pretty easy to also tell people who spammed their 5 posts to get our of newbie section. If you look @ someone's first 5 posts, if they're just there to get out of newbie section it makes it much more likely they're a scammer.

Peek-a-boo.       :)

Raised, I assume, for "razed". Interesting idea. I hope you'll mention it to the mods when you get your non-newbie chance soon. Really!

Just some thoughts from a newbie who needs to make 5 posts to be able to use this forum, while simultaneously trying to suggest improvements to the process in the spirit of the forum.

I remember that self-conscious feeling. Is anybody listening? Do I really have to do this? Should I pretend to do something useful to beat the system?... Relax - it's your system you are trying to improve. The newbie thing will be over before you know it. As a quick self-test of any suggestion for improvements to the newbie system, ask yourself whether you would still think it was an improvement if you were no longer a newbie? Will you still champion the idea when you are on the other side of the fence? Yours has merit, I think. Most don't - they are blatantly short-sighted, self-serving, opportunistic and not at all aimed at improving the community.

See you on the inside soon (he said smugly).

the sense of 5 posts is.... none, better way would  be 0.01 or 0.005 btc to get full access.
People would think twice before troliing

except that would require a great deal of work by the moderators to keep track of who donated and is now allowed access.  This is easier.

Not only does it help with spam but I think it's a good practice overall anyways, makes people get more involved in the community as soon as they sign up. I'd think it makes for a lot less accounts that aren't ever being used to post too.

To me it seems quite logical to have a 5 post history to use the forum in general. People who scam and spam i think might not do so here just for the shear inconvenience. hopefully these folks with just move along to another place to do their dirty work.

Also in 5 posts people will probably get a sense of the typr of person you are.

Anyway, I am new to bitcoin and play poker on seals with clubs, a bitcoin poker site.

I am excited to learn more about btc through this forum

Problem is though, I see scammers all over the forum. I browse the custom hardware sub forum allot since that's my interest, think I saw a good 5 threads just this week for scamware, shame too looking at the blockchain some people actually buy into them. I mean its not hard to just bs these posts for scammers but it probably keeps bots out alright.

I don't get how your first 5 posts are "useless". Your first posts are what you make them - try not to make them useless.

that would be good if anyone would check if that posts are useless or not because right now its not working as intended. i proposed ability to rate posts in another thread - that ability would open whole new solutions for spam/stupid posts problem

The point of having someone post five times before being let loose is to build trust. If you're a one-timer that just wants to post a link to your new spam-filled site, not having five newbie posts will help to prevent that spam. This system is to (hopefully) determine if you actually want to contribute to the community.

I think the attitude of making worthless posts is the problem, you could easily use your first 4 hours to soak up as much knowledge as you could. On my personal account I had more than probably 14 hours on the board before I made a post. When I got here it was just so much to learn so I dove in head first. I mean I still have a ton to learn but just observing and taking things in are more valuable than most people think.

The posts are not worthless if you make them valuable.  Do your best.
Established members do read in this area.  Do your best.
Post your questions and comments.  Do your best
I suspect that you can move your thread to another area after you achieve status.  Do your best.

No - maybe because mine are somewhat useful and I display an actual knowledge of crypto (and they are more than 6 words long - on average).

I didn't realise they did this I have never had that problem.

Are you sure they do this?

Yup, that's an important part of it. You'll also find it handy when you're wondering whether to add someone to your ignore list - look back at their post history. If it's junk, it's probably safe to ignore their future offerings unless you're a masochist. I saw one today - dozens of posts, each with the single word "bump" - I imagine he thought he was beating the system. No matter - I'll never have to read his stuff again, and neither would you unless you choose to. Self-inflicted wounds, nice system.                     :)

I think this restriction is simply forcing newcomers to post garbage.  Why?  Because most people will only actually register on a forum when they want to contribute to a thread they have been following, or to ask a question in same.  Very frustrating. This forum is likely missing out on a fair amount of valuable contributions due to this restriction, because a lot of people simply won't bother.

Its just to help the system not get overloaded with spam and a lot of worthless stuff. Its pretty good tbh. The time limit is a pain though...

They should change the conditions of the 5 post, as I've seen before in a non related forum as it wont let you  into certain areas in the forum unless you have a certain amount of useful, helpful/informative post, all other post wont count, which they kind of have in the whitelist section but should definitely be expanded here to reduce the one word post, hi,ty, etc

Yeah, this is not a really new concept.  It helps cut down on a flood of the same questions and comments from being spammed all over.  Hopefully in the 4 hours everyone takes the time to see if what they wanted to post about is already covered.

the sense of 5 posts is.... none, better way would  be 0.01 or 0.005 btc to get full access.
People would think twice before troliing

I like the idea of a tiny initial fractional charge for posting; plenty of other forums out there have a small one-time fee to keep the trolls and spammers out.  It is a bit of a hassle to build up five newbie posts so that I can thank the cudaminer devs and post my rig specs for feedback.

Anything worth doing just takes time. I love this forum and highly recommend it!

Bump...not that it's needed, but it's still a post.

Is annoying as there's a thread above I'd like to say something really clever.

Honestly, I don't understand the 5 post minimum. I joined the site to give thanks to someone who posted some information that solved a problem.

I joined to thank someone for creating a program that I have found incredibly useful.  The four hour time frame has been harder for me than the post minimum.

It could be to actually start you on a trend of posting in the hopes that you might break the ice and be helpful to each other...  yup, I know it's kind of a mind-f**k  :-P

1) Instead of worthless posts why not post something about how you got interested in bitcoin, how long you've been involved, whether you mine or buy BTC, etc.? Posting a bunch of worthless posts just to get your numbers up will eventually get you ignored by other members.

2)You will appreciate this hurdle directed against spammers and scammers once you get through.

3)For those rushing to get through for group buys, there are new ones posted all the time.

4)If you are a long time lurker but recent registrant you already know all this.

I don't know what possessed me to wait so long to register. Of course I want to comment now but I need these posts.
Hmmm, worthwhile post...does anyone think there will be a flood of cheap video cards to ebay shortly?
