Title: send out your women
Post by: Bimmerhead on December 09, 2010, 02:01:27 AM
Just curious.  Are there any women on this forum?

Are female anarcho-capitalist geeks that scarce?

There is actually a sex ratio available on the forum member stats  (remember you're asked about your sex during registration).

I think it's currently 3.5:1, which imo probably under evaluated.

Women are too busy shopping and grooming, to be interested in stuffs like cryptography, monetary systems, economics or politics.

I don't think she's an anarchist, though.

Not long ago someone posted that they had sent some BTC to their girlfriend's computer, but her computer hadn't finished downloading the block chain yet. She may be the first female user of Bitcoin.

To conclude with your sexual stereotyping ...  Women love things that have no "intrinsic value" and a high "generating difficulty" (jewellery, diamonds, flowers, wedding ceremonies, Harvard MBAs, etc.)

So they must be crazy about Bitcoins.

Right?  ;)

So: "Send out your women, with bitcoins!"

As a matter of fact my wife uses Bitcoin, even generates (or tries to) coints on her laptop. She's only getting 7000 khash/s on her built in Radeon, but it's the fact that counts.

Of course, she found out about it from me. Women usually take over man's hobbies and interests, and that is a sad fact.

I recently got two 5850's and she wasn't too happy about it. :D However, when she saw 300,000Mhash/s (after over-clocking) on each, she calmed down a little. ;)

Doesn't make sense:

1) The ratio of men to women was already like this far before this thread was started, so it cannot be the cause

2) Discounting a far-reaching concept such as bitcoin because a few users are "jerks" to you is pretty nonsensical, I mean, if I suffered from that kind of guilt by association I wouldn't use dollars or euros anymore, either :P

3) Women hang out in a lot of places where "disparaging" comments are made about them, yet they don't seem to care

How do you know what the ratio was before, and what it is now? And you shouldn't try to take a mathematical interpretation of what Jer said: the point is obviously that sexist behaviour makes people run away.

2) Discounting a far-reaching concept such as bitcoin because a few users are "jerks" to you is pretty nonsensical, I mean, if I suffered from that kind of guilt by association I wouldn't use dollars or euros anymore, either :P

Agreed. However, it's not a binary thing: there being more jerks has a repulsive effect. Moreover, if financial communities, forums etc. have a lot of sexist jokes like this one had so far, I'm pretty sure those make women (and men) run away too.

3) Women hang out in a lot of places where "disparaging" comments are made about them, yet they don't seem to care

Says who? At the contrary, I often saw people complaining about sexist behaviour on the internet and more precisely in technical/geek communities.

I don't understand why you're trying to defend yourself anyway. Jer has a point, and it's so obvious that we should just be ashamed and switch silently to more intelligent things to say, if we come up with any, on the matter of Bitcoin and gender. This topic could be interesting, but let's don't fall in the trap of being rude or otherwise use stereotypes, even though they're intended as jokes.

Come on guys, why can't you just admit that women are less interested in this kind of stuffs ?  To me it's not sexism, it is just realism.

Women have a lower tendancy to be interested in pretty much anything.  Whether it is art, sport, games, science, whatever...  Almost all cultural movements have been initiated by men.

I see two ways the sex ratio on this forum could reach 1:1 :

1.  some people on this forum will create fake female members just in order to defeat what I've just written ;
2.  bitcoin would have gone mainstream ;

Before I started this topic I realized that there would be gender disparity on a forum like this.  That isn't a surprising or thread-worthy topic.  I started this topic because it seemed there were ZERO women active on this forum which is really something incredible.

Yes, I realize the forum software says we have a gender ratio of something like 4.7:1.0, but I believe that is because of all the spam accounts that have been created as 'female'.

Likewise, based on this map http://maps.google.com/maps?q=https://smsz.net/btcStats/bitcoin.kml the project is dominated by North Americans and Europeans.  Not surprising given that the project is generally discussed in English.  But how about the 90 million English-speakers in India?  Two clients in the whole country?

I'm not 'trying to defend myself' (if you read the thread, I was making fun of men, not of women). My point is that there are a zillion threads in this forum that are about actual, you know, interesting stuffs, opportunities to earn money, participate in crypography discussions, and so on, where gender doesn't make any difference at all.

However, such an accomplished hacker who does her own chip design is not likely to get her maths wrong this badly. The ratio of men to women is actually HIGH and only likely to get HIGHER with such displays of sexism. Then again, we all make mistakes.

The point remains, though, that all of the gay-bashing and sexism here and in IRC is probably turning away good potential members of the community. I'm thinking of one person in particular. (Aside from being hurtful in the first place.)

Your comments are not so innocent as you think,

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCjDxAwfXV0

Having seen that video, you won't attribute blacks doing poorly due to their race.

I'm no walking vagina and even think women have too many rights (automatically gain child in divorce, free paycheck, can't hit a lady, ...). BUT my sister is a physics major (not because of me, but because of Carl Sagan) and she tells me that other girls ridicule her for being clever. She's not weird or ugly, just highly educated. That's out of place. Girls comment to her why she knows all this esoteric knowledge as though it's a bad thing. Whereas I grew up being respected as a genius by peers.

So HUR HUR HUR get back to the kitchen = you're being an asshole.

guys this is a complete misunderstanding.

What I mean is that we could all try to spread the word about the greatness of bitcoin to intelligent women we know.

Women are often great in business and often even superior to men when it comes to financials, trading etc.

I am sure bitcoin will be interesting to those women.

If some women get to use it, we have 50% growth potential for bitcoins.

There are equal numbers of men and women -_-

If equal numbers of women match an all male figure, that place doubles in size.

It grows from 100% -> 200%, by a growth of 100%

You're right guys.  We should definitely try to have women know about bitcoins.  We can't just ignore them, since they are so numerous and have such a huge consumming power.

I suggest we start a campaign, aiming mainly at hair-dressing salons and shoes shops.  On the web, maybe we could reach them on health, beauty or astrology forums.

Need I say more :)

Unfortunately, now that this thread exists, we can not be sure that this woman is not a feminist man who tries to disguise himself in order to increase female ratio here.

I suggest we start a campaign, aiming mainly at hair-dressing salons and shoes shops.  On the web, maybe we could reach them on health, beauty or astrology forums.

You're making bitcoiners look like idiots.

Somebody should really make a very expensive on-line shoe store that sell designer shoes and handbags exclusivity for bitcoin.  (many, many bitcoins).  ;D

My username is male, but I'm a woman. This name is somewhat random, it's just the name of an artist I like. I started buying Bitcoins back when they cost $1. I just build a mining rig. I wouldn't call myself an anarcho-capitalist but I spend some of my free time reading about libertarianism, and some of my friends are libertarian.

I think there are more women on the internet than you realize. I have been using male-centric forums (gaming, stuff like that) since I was 12, and there are a few problems associated with being female. If you want some insight, read this blog. http://fatuglyorslutty.com/ Do you guys ever have to deal with gamer girls randomly messaging you and asking if you like to have sex with animals? Yeah, didn't think so.

I noticed some of you saying that women copy men. I learned about Bitcoins from a male friend, and I got two other friends into it, both male. I suppose it's considered a bad thing if women do not know what men already know, yet some people also consider it a sign of weakness when women learn things from men. I can only conclude that society is trying to make my life more difficult, so screw you, society.

Women have a lower tendancy to be interested in pretty much anything.  Whether it is art, sport, games, science, whatever...  Almost all cultural movements have been initiated by men.
You left out the institute of marriage, and religious conservatism, which reduced women to male property/baby factories for hundreds of years.

Sexist reasons aside, there are practical reasons why selling beauty products will not attract hoards of females to Bitcoin. Bitcoin is new and confusing. Anybody who gets into it now, when it's still new and confusing, will have to be somewhat technically inclined, wether male or female. There is not a huge crossover between fashion victims, and technology victims. This is true for both genders.

If you want women in Bitcoin, you'd probably have more success if you went after female gamers. Most Sims players are female, for example. You have the best chance of reaching people who already spend all day hanging out on the internet, not people who are into astrology and expensive shoes. Sheesh.

I would think that this community is one of the least sexist that I have every been in... I guess we put a much higher weight on competency than gender.  Also being pseudo anonymous means that there isn't any real barriers for either gender to participate.

For me, I try my best to judge people by what is important (are they good people for the job they are doing).  However, I hold the right for people to be stupid, and judge people for stupid reasons, like gender.

On the chick gamers view:  maybe a site that sells SIMS clothes and other cool gear would be attractive to such a demographic.  :)

Any attempt to appeal to women in general will likely just come across as sexist. Hell, it would be sexist, since you would be implicitly claiming gender is important in economic affairs.

Bitcoin as a system is about as egalitarian as it gets. The block chain doesn't care about your gender. It has no way of even knowing your gender.

Yeah, I'm not trying to accuse this community as a whole of being sexist. I really don't think it is.

Even those sexist-sounding statements, like we need to attract women by selling shoes, probably aren't sexist so much as somewhat clueless. I doubt any of us here have a degree in marketing, and even if we DID, how the hell would we know how to market Bitcoin to anybody? Let alone target certain demographics? It's just a hard sell, no matter how you look at it.

I tried getting all the people I know on face book to use it.
I posted something before the weusecoins vid came out.
then the vid when it came out.
when the value shot up over $5 I tried to get everyone to get atleast .02btc by signing up for bitcoin bonus (the only referral I feel comfortable sharing with everyone, since everything else is gambling, porn, or pyramids)
My xGF showed some interest, but wanted me to explain it more and why she should use it.
my grandmother tried to sign up, but got confused at some point.  She is also on a new win laptop and is used to her old eMac.
no one else showed much interest

I think the problem is that for most people that are not tech-savy, bitcoins are to hard/confusing to even get started. As we all know, generally men are more tech-savy then women. In many technical jobs that I have had, it seems the ratio of men to women is 20:1. I think it has to do with how we grow up, men are more likely to play on a computer. This may change as more and more kids get into social networking and such. Although, everything has been dumbed down for them so much that they my not try to spend the time to learn anything.

How may billionaires are female? How many economists? How many fortune 500 CEOs? Gimme a break. I'm happy there are so few female bitcoiners. This forum is full of enough economic illiterates, crybabies,  and crackpots as it is.  We need chicks contributing more noise the way we need weaker cryptography.

Woman, but hesitated to post it because most who make an issue of saying it our of any context, rather than just being it are AWs and trolling for special attention.

Yes all the sexist comments are so awful because we know that women, on women dominated forums would never make sexist comments about men. Men integrate through rough play, women exclude. Girls who cannot take an Indian Burn don't get in the clubhouse. No special rules. If the play gets rougher than the boys had to put up with- and we decide your clubhouse is not worth it because it's full of stupid boys anyway.

The reality is my gender has been a non-issue on the Bitcoin forums.

That being said I think there are gender issues behind the use and marketing of Bitcoin. Bitcoin relies on keeping track of your wallet.dat file- yet no man ever knows where his wallet is without asking a woman- does this mean we will control the new economy?

Also, I thought real men did not carry little coin purses? Even credit cards are considerably less impressive then a neat wad of hundreds in a money clip. Are you at all concerned about the perception of Bitcoins as not only geeky- but the virtual equivalent of a man-bag/murse? ;-)

Well, I run a naughty brick and mortar business, therefor it follows that trying to run that business and roll out Bitcoin as a form of payment is by extension "naughty" as well. When you put it that way it makes perfect sense and certianly something that the forum Mods need to put a stop to ;D

After all who wants chicks to take Bitcoins to hang around naked with you, sounds like a terrible precedent for the sort of guy that frequents the Bitcoin forum and something they should really take a stand against LOL.

Ehh, happy endings are easy to come by. Finding a hot chick who will go make you a sammich if told, then feign very convincing tears that she toasted it "all wrong" and just can't do anything right and is so lucky to have a guy like you... Well- our market is fairly secure without the happy endings ;D
