Title: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: herzmeister on May 28, 2013, 10:38:55 PM ...how many bitcoins you totally have.
Just my guess. :) Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: Malawi on May 28, 2013, 10:40:40 PM ...how many bitcoins you totally have. Just my guess. :) Why? You don't have to declare how much you have available at your debit-card. Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: herzmeister on May 28, 2013, 11:00:42 PM debit-cards are much more strongly tied to an account they can track down if necessary and your identity.
Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: CanadianGuy on May 28, 2013, 11:03:10 PM and why would everyone have their bitcoins on them at the border? Is it because their bitcoin wallets are implanted in their spines?
Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: Elwar on May 28, 2013, 11:03:58 PM My answer.
I have no bitcoins. (on me) Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: BurtW on May 28, 2013, 11:06:06 PM This is the least of our worries.
Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: BitAddict on May 28, 2013, 11:10:41 PM I don't get it, you can just have you wallet in the mail.
They're not physically moving = no need to declare Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: herzmeister on May 28, 2013, 11:41:40 PM They'll learn what Bitcoin is, they will assume you can access all bitcoins you have anywhere all the time easily (brainwallet, or even paper wallets at home, they'll say you could just phone your mom and ask her to scan one of those you left at home and send you by email), so for capital control reasons, they will want to know how many bitcoins altogether you have. And you will have to sign your statement and will be held liable if necessary.
Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: jag2k2 on May 29, 2013, 12:32:37 AM Why just customs? Why not the DMV when you renew your license? Why not on your tax forms? Why not everytime a cop stops you? Since your bitcoins "live" on a distributed ledger there is no concept of bringing it into the country.
Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: BTCLuke on May 29, 2013, 12:36:44 AM The only correct answer:
"What's a bitcoin?" Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: dadj on May 29, 2013, 12:51:00 AM I believe from memory the question they ask on the form is 'Do you have any bearer negotiable instruments worth over $10,000?'.
I think it could be argued that Bitcoin is a bearer negotiable instrument. It would be difficult to argue if you were caught with a 1000 bitcoin Casascius gold bar and you didn't declare it. Just try not to carry those around with you on flights! Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: BurtW on May 29, 2013, 12:59:33 AM Bitcoin is their worst nightmare. That is why we are all here! I can carry any amount of value in my head.

I can carry any amount of value in my head. Almost like a PIN code Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: Lorren on May 29, 2013, 02:43:03 AM I was thinking about that as I was returning from my trip to Mexico. I'm still fairly Bitcoin poor, so it currently wouldn't have been a problem for me, but they do ask about money as you return from other countries.
Do you have BTC on you? Well, technically it's with me wherever I go... so I do... but... I'm also never physically holding it in my hand. So no, I don't have anything on me. Besides, it would be next to impossible to prove at the border, at the moment, how much BTC I have on me. Perhaps one day in the future, but not now. Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: Crystallas on May 29, 2013, 02:45:09 AM Not enforceable.
Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: CtrlAltBernanke420 on May 29, 2013, 03:58:15 AM Not enforceable. Bitcoin is not legal tender, therefore it is not expected you own any. If you own any it is a choice, and that is your privacy. I wonder if and draconian measures will be implimented, IE, 20 years in prison if caught using virtual currency. (including other than Bitcoin.) -A friend gave them to you. They can not prove you knew they were worth money. Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs... Post by: BTCLuke on May 29, 2013, 04:05:03 AM -A friend gave them to you. They can not prove you knew they were worth money. Therein lies the rub; they'd have to ADMIT that bitcoins are worth money to do down that path...Title: Re: In the future, you will have to declare at the customs...
