Make sure you back up your wallet regularly! Unlike a bank account, nobody can help you if you lose access to your BTC.

Why?

You don't have to declare how much you have available at your debit-card.

debit-cards are much more strongly tied to an account they can track down if necessary and your identity.

and why would everyone have their bitcoins on them at the border?  Is it because their bitcoin wallets are implanted in their spines?

This is the least of our worries.

Our family was terrorized by Homeland Security.  Read all about it here:  http://www.jmwagner.com/ and http://www.burtw.com/  Any donations to help us recover from the $300,000 in legal fees and forced donations to the Federal Asset Forfeiture slush fund are greatly appreciated!

I don't get it, you can just have you wallet in the mail.

They're not physically moving = no need to declare

They'll learn what Bitcoin is, they will assume you can access all bitcoins you have anywhere all the time easily (brainwallet, or even paper wallets at home, they'll say you could just phone your mom and ask her to scan one of those you left at home and send you by email), so for capital control reasons, they will want to know how many bitcoins altogether you have. And you will have to sign your statement and will be held liable if necessary.

Why just customs?  Why not the DMV when you renew your license?  Why not on your tax forms?  Why not everytime a cop stops you?  Since your bitcoins "live" on a distributed ledger there is no concept of bringing it into the country.

I believe from memory the question they ask on the form is 'Do you have any bearer negotiable instruments worth over $10,000?'.

I think it could be argued that Bitcoin is a bearer negotiable instrument. It would be difficult to argue if you were caught with a 1000 bitcoin Casascius gold bar and you didn't declare it. Just try not to carry those around with you on flights!

Bitcoin is their worst nightmare.  That is why we are all here!  I can carry any amount of value in my head.

I was thinking about that as I was returning from my trip to Mexico.  I'm still fairly Bitcoin poor, so it currently wouldn't have been a problem for me, but they do ask about money as you return from other countries.

Do you have BTC on you?

Well, technically it's with me wherever I go... so I do... but...

I'm also never physically holding it in my hand.  So no, I don't have anything on me.

Besides, it would be next to impossible to prove at the border, at the moment, how much BTC I have on me.  Perhaps one day in the future, but not now.

Not enforceable.

Bitcoin is not legal tender, therefore it is not expected you own any. If you own any it is a choice, and that is your privacy.

I wonder if and draconian measures will be implimented, IE, 20 years in prison if caught using virtual currency. (including other than Bitcoin.)

Therein lies the rub; they'd have to ADMIT that bitcoins are worth money to do down that path...
