Is it more wise to invest in Bitcoin or in Ethereum for the next 5 years? What do you think an why?

I think ethereum is the better investment for the future. I feel bitcoin has already seen much of its price rise whereas ethereum still has quite a lot of room to grow.

I think that both Crypto-currencies will actively develop over the next 5 years and you need to distribute your funds equally to ensure a good profit.

bitcoin is astoningishly complex, and ethereum is a beast in terms of complexity.

Yes it is more wise to invest with Bitcoin compare to Ethereum for me because we all see that if the price of BTC goes up it is the same with ETH, it is just like that Ethereum's price is still dependent on Bitcoin's.

Maybe for the exponential growth of price but when it comes to the more stronger and stable I can say that Ethereum will lose that battle because of them changing to POS and some issues with ICO's, but let's just wait what will really happen in the future.

I believe ethereum is better for long term investmen which you are talking about 5 years. but anyway I would divide it like %70 eth and %30btc. so if you have 10K USD to invest, 7K for eth and 3K for btc.

I trust the bitcoin. But it is only in the long term. In the short term is very often cheaper to buy Ethereum. It seems to me that it is now the most popular coins. I rarely engaged in speculation on the stock exchange so my investment asset all placed in bitcoins. In cryptocurrency market a large selection of coins and everyone can find something what he likes.

Bitcoin is safer while Ethereum has much more room for growth. It all depends on what wise is in your vocabulary.

It'll be best if you will invest in both coins. The two top cryptocurrency there is. If you're saying that bitcoin might not pump in the future, then you are wrong. Many veterans are investing on both coins. So follow the vets and probably we can earn alot of money.

In a 5 year time span, I think it's better to invest in bitcoins. Both coins are great in long terms, but bitcoin's price increase is much faster than ethereum, it's more of an exponential growth. Whereas in ethereum, it increases slowly.

I think it will be best to invest in both bitcoin and etherium, bitcoin was the first and many people are already using it, etherium on the other hand might follow bitcoin's track so if you missed investing in bitcoin back when it was still a dollar or less then you can still invest now and then half of that you just invest in etherium as the price is still not that high, by the time it shoots up say about 3 years then you already have that much profit from it. In my opinion. If you have good capital then bitcoin is the best option as it has big potential compare to ethereum.

I think BTC is a better choice to invest for few simple reasons we all know and probably you know it also.Only from the beginning of this year BTC price is go up around 350% and we have 4000$+ these days despite all the bad news which came mainly from China.You also know for sure that BTC is best known cryptocurrency in the world which attracts more and more attention every day.That's why we can expect significant growth in next years,but I think big things is comming in next 10-15 years-especially at the time when 20 million BTC is mined(around 2030.)

On the other side ETH is certainly interesting coin and I think you should more to explore about all its advantages and disadvantages.Someone suggested to you to invest in ratio 70/30 in favor of BTC and I think this is good suggestion.

better to invest in bitcoin, altcoin are very dangerous and do not offer the same stability, i can agree that ETH is a strong coin but it can still die if something go wrong because there is no real adoption and usage like bitcoin

Had you invested your money into Bitcoin 5 years ago, you would have been so happy right now (at least financially speaking and not including other things in life) because the value of what you are investing in could have grown too much that you might have been shocked seeing its corresponding dollar value.

Now, to answer your concern, I would say a BIG yes as I am sure that five years from now the value of both Bitcoin and Ethereum could have multiplied many times compared to what it got today. I hope so. but in the concept of investment there are risks in every trip, but if seen from the growth of bitcoin and eth has a bright future, 5 years will come its value will be even greater if there is no obstacle in some countries that adopt bitcoin more.

I would definitely but both because diversification is actually a good thing in Long term. I will divide my investment by 33% to Bitcoin, 33% to ethereum and the remaining 33% to different altcoins and ICO's.

Yes it is more wise to invest in Bitcoin or Ethereum in the next five years  because these coins are the top and giants in terms of popularity, price, stability, volatility and usability. Bitcoin is undisputed, tough, unstoppable and ia the father of all coins. ETH fall in line next to Bitcoin because of it's uniqueness and the ability to withstand the test of time. We can fully give our trust in these coins other than those new ones that suddenly appeared and then disappeared. Unfortunately, I converted all my coins into fiat just yesterday because I was accidentally collapsed and hit my head on the floor cement. Since I am worried about what would happen I coverted it all and withdraw for my medical check up. For now I have nothing in my wallet. ;D

technology for Smart contracts, but nobody used it for that. They then re-invented themselves during the scaling wars and

I think that there would not be a major increase in price of bitcoin in the coming years so investing now in bitcoin is not a great decision but investing in ethereum is actually great as it has lots of potential and the price is also not that much high.

I would prefer these two when I invest my money. Because this two to the Bitcoins and Ethreum has a great potential, the price may continue to rise in the next five years. And I believe that. Since I've seen it in the past 5 years bitcoins have risen nearly 3,500 $ and Etereum has also increased for just a few years due to its beautiful projects

In the matter of trading it is not ALWAYS the coins that matter but how you manipulate your investment. It is not a question of what but more of a "when". When will you buy it? Of course you should wait for the right moment that this coin will dump. In a matter of five years we don't have a single idea on what dumping news will come like what had happen in china. It could be for the development or the downgrade of cryptocurrency. BUt if I will choose today a coin of investment. I will choose BTC, I think eth is really volatile. The mother of all coin is BTC, without BTC there will be no altcoins, which is similar in the case of ETH.

I would say to split your investment, Bitcoin if you want a steady growth and Ethereum if you want a fast growth but risky.
Bitcoin is the most accepted cryptocurrency as of right now, there is no sign of any cryptocurrency taking over Bitcoin anytime soon.

Both bitcoin and ethereum has room for growth. Both of them is growing too fast and you can see that it will not die any time soon. If you want to reap in the next 5 years, you should start investing in one of the two or invest in both of them. You can still experiment in the first 2 years and then switch on where you want to go all in.

If bitcoin is higher in the next 2 years go for bitcoin but when ethereum is the one that has higher value then switch to ethereum so there is still a lot of room to adapt on what is happening on the Cryptocurrency.

It is good to invest in the bitcoin than in the ethers am not agreeing with your thinking because it is good to invest in bitcoin according to me. The other currencies are risky if not for me then for the sake of the security it is the best option. I would say if you wish to get more profit it is much more better to invest in ETH, because it is still havent shown all the potential that it has. Bitcoin is a newcomer and it hasnt got anything new to introduce. In technological way ETH is better and in popularity bitcoin is number one :D

 Bitcoin is the safe play, but Ethereum has grrater opportunity for greater percentage growth.

The challenge that exists with Ethereum is that they need to branch out from the ICO business. The illifitimaye ICOs have a negative impact on Ethereum. If they can attract businesses to use their model to build more varietyof blockchain uses this company and ether will source.

Never underestimate either of these two because both have a got a very huge potential for the future and ETH is technologically more superior than bitcoin. Especially in terms of transaction speed at least. So my recommendation would be invest in both coins. Split up your  investment in to two parts and invest in both. Because both looks good in longer term. I was initially not interested in ETH and I missed the opportunity to buy ETh at $7 price. However, I have started staking both coins now.

Every person will give you different answer. It will make you more confusing anyway. Its depend on your favourite investment. For me i choose both since both of them now become stronger. We can split our money into more coin is better than just one.

Really there is no way to tell you which of the two is going to actually be better, since it's similar to comparing apples to oranges. Now I keep my money only in bitcoin, because I'm sure of it. However, the ethereum now also has quite good prospects. This is a new crypto currency, which now costs many times less than bitcoin. How can a coin with infinite supply outperform Bitcoin in the long run?

there are so many people advertising ethereum as an investment but it really isn't wise to look at it as a long term investment in my opinion only because they are advertising it. and the only reason they are advertising it is because they want to dump it themselves.
also as the other comment says, ETH has no cap! the law of supply and demand says it can not go up. as the supply grows and keeps on growing the price declines. you can see Dogecoin for a good example.

For me, personally, it would be great and wise to invest your money to BTC if your outlook is for the next 5 years. BTC's presence is known to very little percentage of the whole population of the world and we still hit $5.7k this week. Imagine what could be the price of it in the next 5 years if people start to buy BTC and use it in their daily lives. The price of it would soar onto new levels and could give you insurmountable profits if you'll start investing into it today. Just go long for BTC and everything will be fine  ;D

I think it's even wiser to do a personal research on the underlying technologies behind Ethereum and Bitcoin and then study the history charts of both currencies, this way you should be able to make your own decision on which of the currencies to invest in.

i will stick in bitcoin, but if popssible ill cut it in half and both put an investment , ill just need to wait for a few months or years and im sure in a profit !

I'm not sure why you would think Bitcoin has reached it's ceiling already. But, I don't understand why you think Ethereum  as the best short term investment. Bitcoin has it's drops and it's rises and has the biggest coverage throughout the news. Which means it's more susceptible to news causing the price to differ from each month.

I agree. Both coins are really great for investment. Surely because they both can give anyone a pretty decent amount of profit if they are willing to wait. But in terms of making money the fastest, i prefer etherium over bitcoin because etherium is much cheaper and is a much more volatile crypto currency. Which is pretty great if you ask me. Bitcoins are awesome too and can get you a much more greater profit. Only if you are in for the long term. So which of the is great. It only depends on your wants. But i suggest to get your hands on both rather than choose between two winning choices.

If you would ask this question a year ago Bitcoin would be the winner but ETH gained much more (even when you look 4 month back).

Personally I hold 45% BTC, 45% ETH and 10% other tokens and I will change and play with my holdings as the market keeps growing.

You should consider selling all your ETH before the fork and buying BTC and after you receive your FREE Bitcoin Gold, you can

sell those FREE coins to buy some ETH again. The Alt coins are not going to give you as much of a boost as BTC will do after

the fork. You will still have the BTC you bought and some FREE ETH.  ;)

If you are interested in the opportunity to invest money in buying the coins and expect a profit for several years, while doing nothing there is no better option than bitcoin you will not. If you are willing to work and earn more then you need to trade on the exchange. There is always need to sell and buy coins. It is difficult but profitable.

In my opinion it's wise to invest in both. One (bitcoin) is used as store of value and due to it's limited supply it will keep on rising, and has it keeps getting more and more mainstream acceptance it can rise to very high values. The other (ethereum) is used more and more as the base of many projects that can become successful in the future and if they have success so does ethereum because of the gas used and thus increasing its value.

Someone else mentioned an investment ratio of 70/30 to bitcoin. I agree with this 100%. Bitcoin is huge and the #1 currency with ethereum behind it. Of course you'd want to be in the top 2.

Both Bitcoin and Ethereum are great. I have already invested a lot of money in Ethereum but I decided to move to Bitcoin recently. If I were you, I would invest in Bitcoin. Bitcoin value has rapidly grown in the last few months. Investing directly into Bitcoin became even more profitable than mining. What a pity I have spent a fortune on Ethereum mining equipment.

Bitcoin has the largest user base, the greatest network effect and it also has a limited supply, which makes it a better store of value. I don't see anything better than this for the next 5 years.

I think both have a bright future, I think bitcoin is a better investment but Ethereum is a very interesting proposition from a technology point of view. I dont think they are necessarily competing head to head, its like comparing stocks and bonds.

Thinking about investing in Bitcoin or Ethereum is the same as a few years ago, investors discussed the topic of investing in a company that manufactures an Apple or Blackberry device. At the present time, it became obvious which of them won.

As of today, bitcoins price has increased more than 50% from when i first discovered bitcoin  and i was still a newbie then. And if only i knew how it works and has money to invest in bitcoin, I think it would have been the wisest decision to make. Imagine that in the next 5 years of investment in bitcoin, its price rises to maybe triple its price now. It would be better than investing in banks which will give you less than 50 % even after 10 years.

Nicely said! Ethereum is growing community, before we speculated about bitcoin on 1000 dollars and now bitcoin is over 6000 dollars, now we can expect ethereum to go to 1000 dollars. I'm not some big fan of ethereum but look what is happening now, icos are having their year, everyday new ico appears and many use ethereum smart contracts. They are tied for ethereum, and that will boost ethereum progress, also this icos are using ethereum wallets, you need gas for sending them, all that tells me that ethereum price will grow a lot in the future.

I hold 15% eth and I am currently struggling given the lack of answers on one topic: how many tokens will there be available?
It seems they have this kind of mentality where price does not really matter, which is one problem I have (if you invest and lose 70% because of bad decisions from their side, at least the community is quite upfront about the fact that they dont care).

So they say it is going to be more or less 100Mln coins available. They always state "roughly" because they are not really sure. They also expect "roughly" a 3% annual growth (let's say, 3 mln token every year) because some coins will get dumped (3 mln a year of dumped coins seems a bit too much to me...).

On the other hand PoS might improve the thing if you believe so, but I am starting to doubt PoS will be as profitable as they say:
- they either create more money and increase inflation for more than 3% to pay people
- PoS will be paid mainly on transactions, which divided by everybody (because having no need for a rig means almost everybody will try to gain from PoS and you won't be even able to repay for the inflation)

For me the answer is clear. Bitcoin is more profitable. This year bitcoin has shown growth rates 6 times. What is the coin of all available can boast such a result? New coins can grow as fast but there is a high risk that they will be Scam. Bitcoin will continue to remain the leader of the cryptocurrency.

Yes sure. Bitcoin is the king and heart of cryptocurrency as of now. Every coin depends on it. And the value of it was so high. 5 years actually is a long time to run. Many things will happen, but since bitcoin now has a good reputation. I think it also has a potential to stay and improve in the digital currency so its better to invest now . It's not just about what's profitable. If we look at how much growth Ethereum went through in the recent times, it's safe to say that it's actually Ethereum that has been more profitable. Important is that Bitcoin has a massive long term growth potential, while Ethereum is nothing more than a shitcoin that thrives on ICO's to obtain value. Stay far away from Ethereum. It's long term business model makes zero sense. And it's short term reason to exist apparently is to buy into ICOs, which 99.99% will be found to be scams and disappear.

Bitcoin will always give you higher profits but its always good to diversify your investments at different places to minimize the risk in future and ethereum is the best altcoin that has great value and if you invest money in it then it will not disappoint you in future.

I think bitcoin would be the better choice, although, many have said through their replies that it has seen its best price rise, but still, you have to consider that amongst all the digital currencies, it has been the most aggressive in terms of increase in value, and it is the one that virtually introduced e-currencies in the global market today. both were good and recomended if your into long term investing but ill vouch bitcoin in terms of profitability because its obvious that bitcoins value is way too much high compared to etherium and actually  in my case i put all 100% of my funds in bitcoin because i believe that i can earn much more to it rather than spreading my funds to some coins/altcoins that it would take months or years for their value to pump.

Invest in both. ETH for shortterm investments. By sticking to our ultimate goal of BTC. Because, very unfortunate at all considering current eth value very cheap which of course potentially shiny in future.

Op I would have second that you invest in ethereum for you to get high return on your  investment in the next 5 years but since you mentioned "wise" decision I will say it will be rational for you to in both Bitcoin and ethereum.

Since ethereum in most cases depends on Bitcoin market value fluctuations to react I will say you should invest in both Bitcoin and ethereum at the same time so that you will benefit from what ever happen positively to Bitcoin and ethereum. You can use the percentage of 50% each of your capital for both Bitcoin and ethereum.

Etherium is indeed a good investment but your are referring to 5 long years and I think Bitcoin will be a better investment than Etherium with that length of time. Etherium is known for short term investment . Bitcoin's value will increase much within 5 years as we can see as of this moment where it is already expensive. Although Etheirum is good imvestment. but i will never like to invest my assets in Etherium for 5 years. To me i personally can trust on bitcoin for next five years and cannot trust on any other currency. In fact bitcoin is the only currency which have more potential and for which we can believe for next 5 or even for next 10 years. I think that more wise is to invest in Bitcoin. Simply because Bitcoin is stronger and more people support it, therefor we can say that it will last longer (not 100% certainty). for me Bitcoin is much better than ETH even I invest on both. the new prediction for the price of bitcoin for the next 5 years is raised up to $25000 so if you own a couple of bitcoins it could multiple. so bitcoin has more potential than eth in 2022.

Bitcoin will always be the most profitable token to invest out there. It yields returns for as much as 30-50% in a few months and it comes better with age. Ethereum can be an option but the pricing for me is a bit way too stiff and the pricing won't even budge in a month. Yes, with bitcoin we have been gaining more profit and the growth keeps continuing with minor as well large scale fluctuations. With bitcoin what's required is the patience to hold as well a good fiat backing as the price seems high. With ethereum the price is affordable and has growth taking place at certain time interval.

Lots of people have talked technicals (what seems to be "going up", price movements, etc), so I'm gonna talk fundamentals for a bit.

BTC is still the king as far as "what can you buy with it" and "how hard is it to 51% attack", and network effects mean that those advantages are hard to overcome.

However, Ethereum seems much better at getting technical improvements pushed through. Features continue to be added, bugs continue to be fixed, etc, without much drama, even when it requires a breaking change. Bitcoin, lately, has not been so good at that (18 months between the HKC and SegWit getting enabled, with multiple forks along the way); it's harder for me to be certain that, five years from now, we will see much progress on the longstanding bugs/issues that weren't fixed by SegWit.

So long story made short? Even though I've previously held only BTC as my cryptocoin of choice, I'm considering rebalancing into a 70%-30% split based on the above.

I keep a half piece of eth just to be able to collect free airdrop tokens and to be familiar with its concept/see how it works.

There is no way eth can handle these infinite amounts of new tokens popping every second. It is going to blow up at some point.

To send/trade tokens you need to own eth, to pay the network fee. They call it "gas". This is the thing what makes everybody to hold a little eth at least.

Second, I tried to trade some tokens and somehow i found myself at ether delta. That's very crazy but they actually asked my private keys so they can see my wallet balance and transfer its balance to ether delta so i can make trades.

That's fucking nuts. Crazy. Unprofessional. Insecure.

I handled my priv keys to them since the amount i hold is so little and i dont worry about them being stolen and everybody was doing so, i guess.

If i was holding eth as much as my bitcoins (dollarwise) I would never ever give my private keys to any goddamn website while i was connected to the internet.

Even My ether wallet has an option for us to recover wallets by entering the private keys. Wtf? Do people actually write down their priv keys in a website while they are connected to the internet? Wew. No wonder forums are filled with ethereum users got hacked crying out loud.

In my opinion, would it be wise if we used both bitcoin and ethereum? Like bitcoin, ethereum is a distributed public block chain network. They are both good coins of course. I think there is nothing wrong of choosing these type of technology since both gives us good profits in return. Although there are some significant technical differences between the two, the most important distinction to note is that bitcoin and ethereum differ substantially in purpose and capability.

Well you can buy some alts that are really promising but it seems that you have some trust issues with altcoins so I just leave it with you. But if you want to buy some alts someday it will be good and of course bitcoin, the greatest investment of all time and nothing can beat it.

Well, everyone has their way of viewing things. For me, I will say invest into bitcoin and wait for that 5 years and you will have a good profit. Investing into ETH is good too, but the margin between them will be high.
In a practical aspect, invest of them both with 50% on each and see what you get by the end of the year.

I feel like Ethereum does not deserve to hold 20% of bitcoin's market captilization and most of it is generated from hype. Bitcoin has some hype as well(of course), but i think it is safe to say that the product bitcoin is offering is just more mature right now.

Speaking about 1 or 2 years investment period I would definitely say Bitcoin. While, five years is a long term for the crypto industry, many things will change in five years, but I would still make it 70/30 in favour of Bitcoin.

Bitcoin has gone so far that it requires not much worth investing as compared to ethereum but my major problem is that Bitcoin fluctuation is the major factor that move ethereum to both positive and negative trend over time. It really can give you bigger profit if the value of bitcoin and ethereum will be parallel rising of its price, but you must monitor it in several months if there's progress with your holdings. That five years is very far if we have to analyze since this year and for next years to come and go. I understand your opinion, but to be honest, today the price of Bitcoin continue to increases its value and passed $7,000 - new ATH price within 1 week. And the market does not seems stop at this price, the demand still strongly to make the price of Bitcoin continue create ATH price.

They are both good for a long term investment run. Bitcoin for sure now is rising very high on daily basis, but ethereum is yet to rise on it's path, so it will be better you invest 70% on ETH and 30% on bitcoin.

Ethereum has dropped for a while this month, but I expect it to rise up in the coming years. In the span of 5 years, you can profit more in ethereum than bitcoin.

Dont you just love the way that most of the people advising Eth are based mainly on the *assumption that "It has more room to grow" 

ie. its cheaper to buy more of, so *if it eventually manages to deliver on some of its big-dream promises (other than being a great tool for scamming idiots with ICO's), then it *might climb in price a *bit.. 

but with an adjustable-emission-rate, and endless supply of Eth's (that can be easily changed too), and all sorts of other characteristics very different to BTC (many of Eths are undesire-able, but thats just my opinion) then I just cant see Eth *ever getting anywhere *near Btc.. so the whole "it has more room to grow" claim is bogus..

It will NEVER be used as an actual currency, as there is zero incentive for the public to buy it, and zero incentive for merchants to adopt it.

It's codebase is a buggy, messy, rube goldberg machine. It's attack surface is huge.

Buy Bitcoin, every year, at whatever price it is at. Long term it will provide a store of value for you, and give you a well-known and trusted cryptotocurrency that will be accepted everywhere by merchants all over the world.

I don't get the point of smart contracts so much. I can imagine paying a robot some mBTC to deliver groceries but a "smart contract" seems unnecessary for the entire human race to be involved in.

I'm also starting to come round to the "buy BTC at whatever price" indeed. As long as it keeps going up, the price you buy in at matters less.
