Title: [ANN] ELACOIN fork: retarg @19440 diff .3 |interval calc change? see page 11+
Post by: mat5x on June 03, 2013, 06:49:52 AM
Elacoin: THE FAIR MINING COIN - reward ~= difficulty

Update #10 12/25: Still not dead. Find us on #elacoin on irc.freenode.org

  • pools http://elc.scryptmining.com  |  http://elc.blocksolved.com
  • xchgs http://cryptsy.com/markets/view/12  |  https://www.coins-e.com/exchange/ELC_BTC/
  • blkxplr http://elc.webboise.com

Update #9 06/22 18:00Z: Not Dead Yet[tm] Still around after being busy on other stuff, going to get the difficulty retargetting fixed so we can deal with CoinChoose hashwaves. Everything else will be the same (valuation, threshold value at diff 1 = 1 still, etc etc.) So no major changes, just getting back to reasonable block times, and code to deal with yet another CC hashwave.

Also we checkpointed block 21980, update your src's, WIN-QT is coming soon to github, stay tuned.

Update #8 06/10 02:40Z: Checkpoint 21600 (the 10th nInterval), retarg'd to .888 diff. Coinchoose is back up and causing stupidity. Update clients (src and .exe's updated, MAC soon is up now 06/10 05:17Z).

Update #7 06/09 06:45Z: Checkpoint 20940. Retarg'd at 19440 to .31 diff as expected. Hashing continues apace, this time without CoinChoose's disruptive influence, cuz it's down right now. next retarg at 21600, < 600 blocks

Update #6 06/07 07:21Z: MOAR checkpointz! update your clients: checkpoints.cpp: block 19400 hash: ce70abf9c0930d5cdcff555ceec6e6777f70f3a8bbc4b1efc9ac5c49a3b6c8e6

Update #6 06/06 21:15Z: update your clients plz: checkpoints.cpp: block 19350 hash: c6c725fb3c376a2cc4a0796ab4aa04af1ff472628c8e82ece55657b60b3150a5

Update #5 06/05 18:10Z: new checkpoint in the code, update your clients for all our mutual benefits. (was for block 19200)

Update #4 06/05 05:17Z: minor brainfart: 19440 is the next retarg. 2160 * 9.

Update #3 06/04 21:27Z: http://elc.Scryptmining.com pool working fine. Use that for now. Idea for a lottery give away for mining on it, base reward for mining + more for hashpower so everyone gets a chance. Ideas on parameters? :) Just want to keep things going to 19400 so we maintain a viable coin & value.

COMMENT: Next natural retarg is at 9*2160 = 19400th block. Diff now is 1.25, and max factor is /4. 1.25/4 = .3125. Profitability will increase by 4x. Worth sticking around for to get to 19400.

GIVEAWAY UPDATE: Done with the giveaway, but considering to give bounties for mining :)

UPDATE #2: Scryptmining.com fixed their reporting bug. Elacoinpool should be soon. No shares are lost, and all will be paid out.

UPDATE: All pools were updated and are serving shares. However there is a reporting bug. Shares will be paid out properly, but blocks are not being reported in stats. Pool owners have been notified. Continue mining, you will receive shares. This is a bug in pushpool.

There will be a hard fork at #17820.

We have updated ELC clients at https://github.com/elacoin/elacoin

We have a WinQT binary at GitHub. Additionally a compile guide for WinQT (see orig thread linked below).

Please see the original thread here for details on the changes: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=203647.msg2352798#msg2352798

Summary:
- base reward = difficulty. This means you always get the same reward for the same hashing power, factored by the 270day scaling factor. No worrying about 10x the hashrate giving you 1/10th the coins.

- difficulty retarg will occur at 17820 and again 270, 540 and 1080 blocks later before returning to every 2160 blocks. Estimated next diff .15 ish (40x easier than current way high diff) WILL BE 0.27 (due to the code's max /16 retarg divider) but min reward is based on diff = 1, so high benefit for mining diff < 1.

Additionally we have properly implemented the original ideas behind the coin, fixing up some of the code to get rid of side effects and produce as well a smooth scaling feature uncommon in other coins to avoid a violent 'halving' event situation like with BTC.

As you can see we have kept this coin alive through hard work and commitment of the community. This is not a pump and dump coin or opportunity. There is no < 0.001 difficulty opportunity here. This should be attractive to lower end miners, and trouble big rig farmers who count on blocktimes faster than network diameter to ensure orphan dominance. Sorry. Everyone will get rewards equal to their hashpower, regardless of how many new miners join the effort.

Infrastructure:
  • Pools: http://elc.scryptmining.com http://elacoinpool.com  http://zeropool.net (all 3 updated, scryptmining has been working fine the whole time since fork!)
  • Homepage http://elacoin.com
  • Exchange: http://cryptsy.com - to be updated by Vern shortly.
  • Profitability tracker: http://coinchoose.com -- needs updating talked to SAL002
  • Block explorer: coming soon
  • Irc channel: freenode.org#elacoin
  • Fountain: *soon*
  • Games: 100 ELC bounty available for 1st, 50 for 2nd, 25 for 3rd
  • Coin giveaway: reply to this thread for 1 ELC to first 100 replies!

Please discuss ELACOIN in the original thread linked above, as this thread will be a giveaway thread.

* some asked about ADDNODE =

the wiki has it, but here:

addnode=66.96.18.75:47919
addnode=199.204.38.220:9223
addnode=24.231.65.165:9223
addnode=50.56.174.121:58950

the client does irc too of course.

getting around to a round of payouts. Thanks for patience! :)

Thought of something just now that I thought earlier but forgot to underline:

DIFFICULTY DOESNT MATTER

If someone slams the diff up high and leaves, then the reward goes higher. Consider that, but discuss in main thread as per above post.

Glad to see people working on the coin - but where is Milkshake?

He's the John McAfee of altcoins eh? Whelp, his code wasnt so great, he didnt fix many of the comments from the orig LTC code that referred to the code he just changed, some of his comments were totally wrong compared to what his code said, he explained the coin somewhat differently from what the code actually entailed as well.

I think he was in over his head a little. We tried to help, but it kinda fell apart. I dont think we need the stemmer to keep a coin going, Im not sure why we need figureheads for altcoins that are supposed to embody decentralization. The community worked on this, which i think is great and more important than a single figure.

At any rate, post your addr, ELC's to be given :)

Welcome back to the coin!! :)

No, the hashrate reported by clients is an estimate. Im not sure what its based on. Look at the actual block timestamps going back and make your own estimate, along with how the weather, the FED's announcement of QE4 and the price of tea in china will affect recent block hashing rates :)

grep "new best" debug.log is handy in that respect, and you can even do  grep 'new best' debug.log | tr -s " " "," >> blocktimes.csv and import it into a spreadsheet and play with the numbers. Then make some deep pronouncement about hashrates and difficulty.

When you've figured that out, go make a mint on TRC cuz I cant figure out why the diff STILL goes up and down. Its a weird social phenomenon.

I see about .8 to 1.2 hrs per block, but luck works too, we had a 4 minute block this morn and a 4 hour. So who knows. And hashrates are coming on and offline constantly. Make a guess.

If you read the code, the max retarg downwards is /16, and it will likely be that becasue of the slow blocktimes back 135 blocks, so we're looking at 4.32556 /16 = .27 diff. that will be 16x faster blocks than .8 to 1.2 hrs average, so something like 3 to 4.5 minutes, but no one knows.

you should have done this from the start. waiting for dificulty 24 before the first reward doubling was stupid  :-\

understatement. yes, thats the whole reason for this. if it HAD made it to 24 it woulda been ok, but its like a rocket failing to achieve orbit. so close yet so far.

blocks are coming along nicely at a reasonable rate as planned. 2.05min per block since fork (!!). This worked out better than expected. Never know how much hashing power yer unleashing with a fork...

A retarg will occur at 18090 - since we're so close to exact block rate, a retarg wont change diff much.

At this point the highest diff (if suddenly the last 120 remaining blocks were mined in 0 time), we'd have a max diff of .486. But that wont happen.

if you value this coin put pressure on CoinChoose to update their totals. we are at 16x lower diff than reported. Thus the 15% efficiency is actually 15.07 x 16% of BTC. Yes, ~250%.

additionally, get dustcoin.com to add us to their calculator.

what can you do. every coin is subject to this, even BTC. there's a billion $ in btc, so someone who thinks $10M is worth wasteing on it to get $100M of value could do the same thing.

unfortunately for these coins, somone willing to waste $100 of hashing power on messing with us can do the same thing. the only protection of course is to have more hash power.

the coin isnt instantly dead, just those blocks arent valid in your and my chain. what that means for future is the same as any coin: i dont know. why would someonetry to take over the coin so hard as to make its value $0? dont they want value in the coin? so obviously the coin will survive or there's no point to it. keep mining, the rewards are still more than usual.

Not for long, with coinchoose showing 400% profitability the difficulty is about to spike back to 2+ within hours. Most blocks are being found in <20 seconds now. We'll see what happens but I'm guessing with the extemely low volume on cryptsy and an influx of miners looking to dump that the price is going to plummet.

Sorry guys, if the pool had any kind of balance I'd try to help out and send some extra along as well, but I'm as wiped out as everyone else.

Note; There were a couple of blocks confirmed after this incident that I need to manually pay out. I'll look into doing that tomorrow (late here).    Thanks for the support at the pool and hopefully things stick from here on out.

from what I understand, there's a server out there pumping out 12s blocks when the block time should be more like... 2 minutes. So someone has a lot of hash power they're throwing at this.

thats just reporting error. sometings up with stats reporting, but its paying out shares. this is on all 3 pools (which use the same software)

i am thinking there's a bug with the retargetting inteval changes. i bet at 19400 things clear up nbut i dont know the software well.

maybe one of the 3 pool operators can comment.

WindMaster?

note the negative shares reported on ZeroPool.

On http://elc.scryptmining.com/ which was the one I was mining on with about 5500 KH/s there are over 220,000 shares on this current round, which is crazy for a difficulty at just over 1.  And it still shows that I have 9000 unpaid shares, which leads me to believe that the shares are being reported but the blocks aren't actually being found.  I mean, I guess I could be wrong and it's just a stats problem, but it all seems pretty strange.

likely cuz of the very fast block times we were having when 80MH joined the network when the coin became profitable based on a 0.05BTC deep base because coinChoose values things wrong.

I mean, I guess I could be wrong and it's just a stats problem, but it all seems pretty strange.

its a bug with the pool software. welcome to experimental software. (BTC is experimental too, there's no refunds available from the issuing company you bought the software box from.) :)

i didnt write the pool software and it seems we've uncovered an issue. im sure sufficient logs are available to split out the values properly, i mean i see zero pool giving me proper shares too.
those shares just have to be triggered to be paid out.

at 19400 i have a feeling things will all go back to normal. I think the retargetting interval change confused the pool payout scheduler.

Makes sense, I guess we shall see when we hit 19400, which at the the hashrate it's going at now, shouldn't be too long. :)

Reporting well my ass. This pool rob my coins, for the first 1000 shares i have 1.09 coin, for the next 8000+ i have nothing, and over all of that after repairing pool, my final balance drop to 0.89 coin.
It`s not fair, and until i have not refunded from dev. of this pool i claim that is a scam pool, that works for interest of his dev.

I've been sending some units to the coin for a bit now. Lately, I've found some blocks, but they're immediately rejected. Happened with the last five blocks - gogo solo mining!

Found block for pool 0!
Rejected 00025f9f Diff 27.6K/10234 BLOCK! GPU 0 pool 0
New block detected on network
New block detected on network

Found block for pool 0!
Rejected 0003089f Diff 21.6K/10234 BLOCK! GPU 1 pool 0

likely cuz of the very fast block times we were having when 80MH joined the network when the coin became profitable based on a 0.05BTC deep base because coinChoose values things wrong.

Subject to disagreement - I value based on currently open orders to purchase averaged up to a minimal order.  I understand you want me to factor in prior orders, but that would require some sort of technical analysis to my calcs, which I am still not a believer in :). Plus, I'd rather undervalue (on a consistent basis to all coins), than over value as it would lead miners to be disappointed when they get less than they believe they should have.

Hey, glad to see you always assume the worst.  Let me know your username, or pm me, and I'll gladly look into it and let you know.

I love being a pool op, your always a scammer at the slightest sign of inconsistency, when 99% of the time it could easily be fixed off the boards :)

Other things to keep in mind:
#1 The orhpan fest for the first 238 blocks when someone with more hash power than the network replaced the chain, and everyone lost all their coins (not just the pool, everyone mining ELC up to that point). So no payouts for those shares, as the pool had no coins to give out.
#2, blocks from ~12am EST to ~6:30am EST (when the pool wasn't reporting properly) where incorrectly paid out as 1 reward blocks instead of 0.909792. This was due to me rushing a bit to clean up the backlog properly.  A slight adjustment to balances was made to correct this shortly after (or the pool would be negative funds).
#3. Any mining done in the last ~2hrs (since the 6:30am cleanup) should be 100% fine and dandy as I mentioned, if its not, I need some details so I can investigate.
#4 With the coin requiring 120 confirms and the current global hashrate, we are currently ~4.5hrs delayed in final confirmation of coins (ie: taking 4.5hrs to see payouts).  This has nothing to do with the pool perse, its just how long its taking the network in general to chew through 120 confirmations.  (You can see the last confirmed blocks on the pool blocks stats page).  If the pool had a surplus balance of ELC I'd gladly reduce this (much less stress on the servers storing all the share info over 120 confirms), but it doesn't at this point.

Not saying any of the above is the cause of your problems, but stuff to keep in mind.  As I said, I need your user details so I can look further into your complaint.

In case you didnt notice _ALL 3 POOLS_ suffered the same error and reported the same error at the same exact block number.

Doesnt that sound like a bug to you instead of coordinated malicious attack? Ruining the coin isnt worth any $ to ANYONE, so there's no point in it.

Stop assuming the worst in people.

It's too bad Bitcoin protocols help create and the BTC net is a Super Computer designed to calculate away the need for human trust. It seems that it's WORKING TOO WELL.

at block 19400 there'll be a retarget and the difficulty will drop by 4x. profitability will increase by 4x.

value on coinchoose is 35% profitability. that can change up or down in a second of course with buys. I dont agree with coinchoose's valuation, consider this

someone selling 100 ELC for .0025, someone buying at 0.0020, they dont meet. value of coin is based on 0.002 now.

but if the buy price was HIGHER, the trade would execute and _DROP_ the valuation of the coin to the next (possibly much lower) bidder, even though it just performed much higher. so i think it's unfair to ignore previous trades and asking prices.

at any rate, itll climb to 140%.

What you hope is the market will adapt and a new buy order is placed matching the prior price.  If no buy price is placed at that level, then the coin is in a downward movement.

Sounds fair in some ways I spose...

it's a tricky thing to value - you say it values on a significant BTC equiv order, what if the market is too small to meet the minimum total BTC value on the buy side, how is that handled?

All of the orders are averaged.

Honestly, I am debating whether I just want the price for one block of the cryptocurrency.  That would be smaller, but more accurately reflects what the market will have for a minor.   But I am getting constant pressure to "under" report profitability from the users.  Hard to balance.

One block, like power cost? Power cost is different values in different markets. hmm. odd. depth of market is kinda already ignored, since you take an abitrary .5BTC sizing regardless of the sizing of the market - sometimes there's not enuf to satisfy a .5BTC value, othertimes thats just a 100th of the total bid values.

1 block instead would be another abitrary valuation, and interesting in ELC's case with low reward (high value_) coins.

I just wanted to give a quick shout out to Nearmiss, we discussed the fact that the pool was not paying out when it was finding blocks because of the bug in the reward numbers and he happily paid me out of pocket to make things right.  Great service from a pool owner and one that I would be happy to point my hashes at whenever I can.

It's moving along, the hash rate reported by the debug console isn't the immediate hashrate, it's calculated over several blocks. There's a fair amount(10mhash?) on the network right now just from talking to people. sometime tomorrow the retarget should roll around.

I let mat5x know about the title.

CHANGING RETARG TO EVERY BLOCK?

I just realized something completely obvious (and no one else mentioned it either so we all fail).

This coin was originally launched to give a reward = diff but milkshake kinda mussed that up. But with the original idea, gaming the diff would never matter. Thus, logically, having a diff retarg frequently wouldnt matter either, there's no gaming to be had. A faster block time would ensure that people couldnt throw on and off hashing power (2 minutes is ok, 1 minute would be better, <40s is supposedly too fast for network equity, but i think we have to leave it at 2 minutes to avoid screwing things up), and further more it would solve stalled coinitis, allowing xactions to go thru.

Then we'd never suffer stalled blockchains when interest got low and giant swings in hashpower when valuations pile up (or decay) and then coinChoose suddenly indicates ELC's super profitable.

The point of this coin in fact WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY WITHOUT RETARG EVERY BLOCK. This cannot produce a TRC yoyo-diff effect, TRC has static value for all diffs, so gaming it works.

Actually, every block wouldnt be ideal not because of hashpower on the network, but because of random luck of small #s of miners. Statistical variations could cause block diff to shoot up very high. That indicates a max multiplier/divider (4x higher or lower in most coins, and ELC now) is required, but I worry this allows hopping in with giant rig as the diff wont climb fast enough.

Need some way to seperate luck from hashpower on the coin, but I dont think that is possible. All I know is that 3 days is too long for a retarg. Perhaps, asymetric climb/decay mutlipliers like
other coins have would be good? Not sure. Need more brains thinking on this. What's the ideal retarg interval, and multiplier? Trying to avoid the TRC effect here. Maybe every block, but with a bigger max increase (16x would be fine, if the next block is too long, then itll drop back down 16x...). Gives opportunities to bounce the coin off a 1.0 diff and score high rewards (as the coin is worth at least 1.0 base), but that also encourages many to mine, destroying the opportunity for a soloist to enjoy such raquetball).

Yes, another damn fork would probably make people start calling this SchizoCoin. Fixing this properly once and for all without destroying the work of 10-15 people's efforts by just making yet another new alcoin would be best, as it would be a clone of ELC anyway. So let's fix ELC itself.

(The only other thing that also should be fixed was the accidental implicity floor(diff) casting in the reward code, which does produce some discrepancy in value, which is why it's 0.90 instead of 1.11 or so right now, which is unfortunate. The code was floated many blocks/hours before the fork, and no one caught the bug, so we're all to blame? heh. It's all a learning experience!)

Im not sure if this helps fix problems with 51% attacks either, but i have a gut feeling that it does.

It would be good to fork this before the retarg @19440 so we dont get 500 new downloaders that all need to redownload YET again. That will hurt an alt coin that hasnt become popular for the right reasons yet.

Comments? Barwizi? WindMaster? et al?

The only changes I would make would be to multiply diff before the reward calc, then divide the end result by the same (10000? have to test we dont blow int64 in the far future with high diff values), and of course, the retarget frequency (which would amount to removing an if statement entirely, more or less), and changing the interval constant settings. Maintaining the base calc of diff = 1 for reward purpose would keep interest in the coin as well, as is alreeady the case in the code (ie leave that part as is).

From the coin i released today i can safely say that 2 min times are viable if difficulty adjusts quickly enough to react to changes in hash rates. This effectively discouraged the guys with farms from trying to rape it. Stability in that sense was acheived. I support you idea though per block difficulty change is something i have limited knowledge on. If you look at bitgem, it's based on that model i think, but everytime i've tried it, i am unsatisfied with the results. Perhaps every 5 blocks would work, esp in the beginning were the initial hash spikes.

modified my original post idea there above, reread and comment.

5 might be good, but why 5? seems to me that number should be dynamic, contingent on some behaviour in the last N blocks, where the retarg is calculated to be on f(N) blocks instead.

I need to sleep on this. WindMaster needs to wake to it! :)

brainstorm people!

I feel the biggest problem is seperating luck from wild swings in hashpower, to determine what the cause is. Otherwise we might still have a TRC situation, if we limit the incr/decr in diff to x4//4 (could be higher, but then we also risk having it swing around too much when there's few # of nodes in the system, which means averaging of luck on the block is much less fine).

ha. i think i know.

might be hard to do tho - if the diff goes up by N, then the block time should go down to compensate, to ensure we've not committed to a high diff for no reason (or same, a low diff).

so after a wild swing, the block time drops. interesting. then theres no benefit to swinging up the block by diff 16 (say thats our max factor), to let it drop back down suddenly by x16 so you get
to hash into it at alow diff. the block would be worth less too of course,  if its a shorter-time block. course, we cant go too short or we run into orphan problems. even a blocktime of 15s results in the odd 1-2s blocks, or shorter, which causes reorgs :/

30s might be a good lower bound, though thats only a factor of 4. but a multiplier of x16 or /16  with a time factor incr/decr of /4 or x4 respectively would counteract the impact of a sudden swing that large. decreases gamability of hopping in and out, as you get 1/4 of the benefit of the swing you cause if you are a big rigfarm. averaging over the last 2 blocks would further mitigate hash power swings, as its harder for people to throw power in and out on that short a scale, where as luck does work the same at all scales (and there we have our filter of luck vs hopping)

WindMaster, help us nail this idea down.

btw, does anyone have the distribution curve handy for 'luck' on scrypt mining? is it a normal distribution? (no it cant be. lower bound is closed at 0, upper is infinite.)

what's the probability of a 1/15th time block for scrypt?

i've never tried dynamic difficulty adjustment due to coding issues. If it can be done clean then it would be perfect.

Can I buy some elacoin?

elacoin is pretty cheap on cryptsy right now(well, depends on whether you think the coin has a future or not I guess?)

if you don't want to use the exchange, I'll sell some to you but my sell price is more than twice the cryptsy buy price at 0.0015btc/ELC. If anyone cares to outbid me, have at it :P

I'll take LTC or BTC.

WindMaster, help us nail this idea down.

Sorry, real busy at the moment.  I'll weigh in when I can though.  I've been leaving an IRC window open on #elacoin so I can occasionally read back through what's been discussed when I have a free moment here and there.

Yes, another damn fork would probably make people start calling this SchizoCoin. Fixing this properly once and for all without destroying the work of 10-15 people's efforts by just making yet another new alcoin would be best, as it would be a clone of ELC anyway. So let's fix ELC itself.

Yeah, I think the "SchizoCoin" comment would be apt.  Hard forks and incompatible client changes are an absolute last resort to fix something fundamentally wrong with a coin that it simply won't survive without fixing.  It's not really a tool for trying out random experiments in tweaking coin parameters without carefully contemplating what types of unintended consequences could occur, since there are many people who hold ELC with a certain understanding of what the coin parameters are/were.  Remember our IRC conversation the other night where multiple potentially exploitable issues surrounding the changes to the retarget calculations made in the last hard fork a little over a week ago were uncovered?  Fortunately they don't appear to have been exploited, and the window of opportunity for them to be exploited has now passed.

A healthy coin isn't one that needs to hard fork twice in just over a week's time!  I would say, "slow down, think carefully, the world isn't going to end tomorrow if the latest experimental coin parameters aren't implemented immediately, be sure all unintended consequences have been thought of, and that the changes are actually absolutely necessary to fix a fundamental flaw that dooms the coin otherwise."

Wise words, but we're slowly dying here. A checkpoint cant hurt to start.

The valuation of the coin to date will largely remain the same - anyone who invested in it isnt going to be too upset that the coin survives with SOME value, vs not surviving at ALL.

The spirit of the valuation will be the same, we just need to retarg difficulty better/faster. Perhaps people DID invest into ELC gaming on the fact that the difficulty would get messedup by a CoinChoose wave, and thats how they made their profit (i would posit those people are no longer holders of ELC!). Anyone else who is holding i dont think is betting too heavily on the block rate
being once/12 hrs :/ except the AWS-miner guy who reorg'd 168 blocks as you say...

I dont want to put all my experimental ideas into Elacoin right now, its not the right coin for it. People need a coin to be stable/remain the same as you say, tho the threat of total death gives us some wiggle room to improve it back into life. The coin as is and its reward are just FINE, just need to recalc difficulty more frequently (or semi dynamically, as we dont want 0.1s blocktimes if/when the CC wave comes back).

For other ideas id love to talk to you in more detail about some other stuff, but right now i have it on hold mostly in my head as i deal with real life stuff. But id like to get thinking. Find me in PMs or irc..

gentlemen and ladies, i made my views clear earlier. and now we are where i said we would be. i'm done with this coin, i have my own. Piece of advice, do what i said, and react to market developments, the ideas behind this coin are ancient and i'm glad i sold when interest and price were high.

yeah not sure what happened to all the pools for ELC? p2pool delisted it, Trenal's pool is down, and Vern doesnt have the domain for elacoinpool.org anymore.

anyone? :)

I see the floor() of the diff is going to bite us again at the next retarg. But fixing that means another fork. This means the 'coin is dead'. Then again, anyone holding value in the coin will be hotpotatoed because no transactions will take place if its truly dead. So it's a trade off - let it die, or fix it so it hobbles along. Im sure those with no holdings would love to let it die, since they're not in the game. Those with however...

basically, the
Code:
int64 diff
in the reward calc should be
Code:
double diff

Comments?

now that the difficulty is higher, the correction isnt so important as the ratio of the 'miscalc' or whatever you wanna call it vs the diff gets smaller with higher diff. So just keep mining...

lol wut?

I dont control anything in the coin specifically except the source code, and have not put out any new code in months (ie we're keeping it stable as it is, warts and all). That way everyone knows the code/rules going forward. Just because I take an interest in this coin doesnt mean Im scamming. I have no power to ( in fact, anyone who has sold coins lately has probably sold some to me, so you've been cashing out on my dime.)

This just shows people _STILL_ dont understand how cryptocoins work at all. The only centralized control in ELC is four entities:

  • cryptsy who could fuck with the bidding to influence the coin one way or other. Or get hacked and get coins stolen. I have no stake in cryptsy (or even contact with them).
  • scryptmining.com which is a pool which could either walk away with stored coins, pay out less, or do a 30% attack (per the Stanford Cornell paper) as they hold lots of hash power, or get hacked. same for the other pool.
  • middle coin which is a floating pool vs most profitable coin. same deal above - with additional hash power to throw at any coin to hashtsunami it to fuck the difficulty up so high itll be forever before it comes down.
  • CoinChoose which lists relative coin difficulties/reward/profitability. He could fake any numbers he wants and many floating pools would follow it however he wanted. He could pumpcrash any coin he wants pretty easily.

(edit: in case you're really new to all this ALL coins suffer that same points above, including bitcoin.)

Do you use any of the above? If so then you are contributing to centralized authority of a distributed coin, weakening its resistance to takeover and authority. This breaks things way more than I could ever hope to.

I just happen to believe that the coin will go higher eventually, and be a good store of value for miners since the reward is constant per mining KH/s. If you don't, then sell me your coins.

So explain how it's a scam.  It's just as much a scam as people calling those who mined btc in 2011 'scammers' for being early adopters and risking their power bills for an unproven (still, as yet) idea. Standard response to people who didnt mine BTC in 2010/11 is 'cry more, noob.', amirite?
