Title: Mt. Gox to open trading in competition with churches around the world...
Post by: AngelusWebDesign on June 26, 2011, 04:57:16 AM
For some reason, I thought they were opening Sunday afternoon -- you know, when I get HOME from church.

No, it's actually 10:00 AM (CDT), right as Mass is beginning.

I know I'm not the only Bitcoin user who goes to church. I sincerely hope not!

Now trading is always going on while I'm gone to church, shopping, etc. and that's nothing new.
But a re-start of trading on Mt. Gox, which has been down for A WEEK, might provide unique opportunities that I might miss.

Why did they have to pick such a time? I still think they should have been ready by 12 hours after their original plan (namely, RIGHT NOW)

They aren't even going to be open a couple hours before 10:00, so I could get in a few orders before I leave. No, I have to just miss out.

Oh well. Maybe it will prevent me from selling at $18, and I'll get home and get to sell at $25 or something :)

I never really took the average Bitcoiner as a churchgoing chap, anywho.

I'd like to think we're all critically-minded rationalists who hold observable above the supernatural, but I have a suspicion that is not so.

I did think of one solution -- post an open order (or 5) on Tradehill.

If BTC is up to $22 on the Mount, it will certainly be at least $20 on the Hill.
If it's down to $5 on the Mount, it will probably be pretty close by (maybe $8) on the old Hill.

The exchanges have to follow each other -- if they don't, you have arbitrage opportunities which will end up bringing them in line together.

No.

I'm just saying it's yet another way I've been GOXED in the last week.
"GOX 10: The Final Goxing"

I was here for all the false openings, and now I'll miss the real one.

I just wanted to note it publicly -- no one else seems to have noticed yet.

Like I said, I have a solution that will cover things most of the way. I was just hoping to be part of the "excitement", that's all.

I'd also like to throw in that Japan is like 14 hours ahead of Central time, so the real enemy of churches is the time zones and the fact that the earth rotates. I don't remember much from the bible, but didn't it say God created this earth, and so created this whole time zone fiasco? So really, the enemy of church is God himself. This God guy sounds like a real bastard, playing tricks like that on you.

Twice it's opening has been the middle of the night for me, once when I was journeying from work.

It's always inconvenient for someone in some timezone. This time it's you.

Because your particular choice of spending sunday time is not more important than anyone elses - be it golf, work, family bbq, favourite wanking time, whatever.

Religions are renowned for their sense of self-importance.
Don't make the mistake of assuming anyone else should think you're spending your time there well - let alone take it into consideration for a globally operating concern.

right on!  I hate self righteous religiosity and really wish people would stop assuming others give a shit about their particular brand of irrationality.  This is a fucking bitcoin forum not a place to sell sky fairies.  Keep your religion to yourself or people like me will call it out for what it is, bullshit.

Yes, except the language part, they corrected themselves about 2800 years ago. They're not too observative about the other stuff.

Also OP has to go to church every week because he needs to hear the same teachings and stories very often? Does he forget them over the year or what?!

Mt. Gox -- you should delay a few hours until most people get back from church.

Come on, we're not a nation of atheists, even if some people here are!

15:00 GMT is:

11:00 EDT
10:00 CDT
9:00 MDT
8:00 PDT

That is basically PRIME TIME for churches across America on Sunday morning.

Come on, Mt. Gox -- show a little respect for America's religious sensibilities!

Come on, we're not a nation of atheists, even if some people here are!

Just a friendly reminder:

We are not a nation, but a global community. Mt. Gox is sitting in Japan, there are traders in Europa, Asia, Africa, Australia, and also some in the US.

15 GMT works fine: Most people in the US are already awake, while most people in Japan aren't already asleep. And of course it's also daytime in Europe. So for most people 15 GMT is at some point during the morning/day/evening, and only few people need to trade during the(ir) night.

In addition, it's Sunday, so many people don't need to work today (except for some middle-eastern countries, where Friday takes the role of our Sunday).

So I'd say that Sunday 15 GTM is one of the fairest solutions for everybody. If this doesn't work for you just don't go to church. Or buy a 3G SIM card and take your laptop with you.

Well, I should post a follow-up to this thread, since I started it --

Neither of my Tradehill orders filled.  It looks like by the time I got home, trading had only been going for maybe 50 minutes. And I didn't miss much!

Basically the price went down to Tradehill's, and that's about it.  No mega-crash, no mega-rally. A disappointment for anyone expecting something spectacular.

I didn't know what to expect -- but it makes sense that not much would happen. People had access to MOST of the money they wanted access to as of 26 hours ago, and there are SEVERAL other exchanges to buy/sell on. Why wait for Mt. Gox to get around to opening?

So it worked out well after all.

Matthew

Might one remind you of Exodus 20:8-11? The objection, if you have cause to have one, should be that it's on a Sunday at all... not just "B-b-but I'll miss the opening! Can't it wait till I get back from church?" True Christians™ should be spending today with their families, not fucking about on messageboards and exchanges, no? :P
Am I under the law of the Old Testament? FYI, Shabbat was yesterday...

However, my life is not trademarked, I simply strive to resemble Christ more and more.

you do know that bitcoin is the mark of the beast, right?  looks like you're going to hell regardless.

Since the Mark will be required to buy and sell, it will likely be under the control of the anti-Christ. That would be difficult as this forum can't even act as one voice.  Unless the mining pools are controlled by the anti-Christ? I know some on this forum think so.

Isn't the whole point of Bitcoin to be decentral so that the Beast cannot take over world economy?! Kidding...

I'm also a Pastafarian and I'd like to point out that our holy day is Friday, so there's no competition there.

BTW, "churches around the world" all have service at the same time, no matter what time zone? Now that's some coordination right there.

I think the Lord will understand that He can not compete with the great Gox. Does He have a bitcoin address? If so I think we should all send Him some Bitcoins just to make sure we don't anger Him and end up in hell like the fags, Jews, Muslims, evolutionists and atheists
