This is something which I've beleived for awhile, which is the prospect that if big governments and banks worked heavily together they'd be able to remove Bitcoin from the face of the earth. They wouldn't ban it, as that would be a tough thing to swallow for the American people as they wouldn't see a good reason to do that ( at least in my mind here) But they could just go ahead and regulate Bitcoin into oblivion, making it hard for Bitcoin businesses (buying and selling, trading, etc) to operate within their countries, or be subject to insane taxes, KYC AML and such.

Do you think Governments could kill Bitcoin?

Well, they can buy down 21 million BTC and keep all of them to themselves, essentially 'killing' Bitcoin. :) On a serious note, no, I feel that it is difficult for them to do so. Even if countries like China tries to ban Bitcoin in their own country, they cant exactly do so to the whole world, and there will always be a use for Bitcoin somewhere else.

Bitcoin is still gaining popularity, and its community is growing, so unless all the governments team up and say NO to BTC, it would not happen (I hope).
Citizens > Government, and we need to believe this as well.

They won't be able to 100% stop it. As you see we already should pass a lot of steps of verification on all exchanges to exchange our bitcoins to fiat money and thats where the governments will probably strike ( and that will hurt). In other way we still gona be able to use it like we use cash (but I don't think that any store will accept btc so  you will only deal with other people).

They could try by making their own version of bitcoin but it won't be enough to stop bitcoin. One way of killing bitcoin is to cut the internet access of everyone so there would be no transactions being made every second but that's unlikely to happen.

Buying all bitcoin would make the price very expensive and this can't be possible since some of the coins are already burned and some can't be moved like the 50 btc mined from the genesis block.

They couldn't kill it completely, but they can prevent mass adoption by simply outlawing it. Most people wouldn't risk getting fined or imprisoned just to use an alternative payment system, so Bitcoin community wouldn't be able to grow to any significant size. And the second problem is mining - right now it's relatively centralized and draws huge amounts of electricity - together it makes it easy to shut it down. Without mining Bitcoin's price can't freely grow, because mining protects the network from double-spending attacks, so when hashrate is low the network becomes less secure, meaning it's cheaper to attack it, so it can't sustain above certain amounts of value.

We can sense that the government and banking officials is now on offensive by painting cryptocurrency as a fraud/scam. But they can’t or investors never trust them because we all know about they’re own interest and profits that’s why they’re doing such move on bitcoin. With the help of internet and social media they can’t manage to stop it and that’s the truth.

They could kill bitcoin. In Illegal Way but it will take longer since they should kill all the nodes, if one of the servers have been affected it will alert other servers and also the bitcoin community that something bad is happening. They could also buy the 21 Million BTC on the highest price they could and just hold it forever ( but then again it will take longer ). And I don't even think they will do it , they can gain something from Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Field Why Stop or kill it. Think about that.

Lets go back to China. With their government's absolute power over their citizens, have we seen them use a sufficient way to kill BTC? No we havent. They can claim that they will regulate it, suppress it or kill it but in practice we havent seen anything close to it. So, no. BTC, for now, cant be killed.

Well, we saw how China was able to really make a dent on bitcoin's value. If every country does this, very few will continue to use bitcoins, essentially stopping it. One country cannot do it itself.

But Bitcoin gives hope to unfortunate people, those who losses their jobs, and who are not enough qualifications for government or private employment. As we can see, many people's lives changes to a more successful one because of this bitcoin. If this thing the government will consider and will realize the good side brought by bitcoin, then why should the government cut the opportunity for the success of the community and country?

no. let take a look in china's case they imposed banning bitcoin exchanges in their country as well as ICOs we all know that china has a large influence in bitcoin when the ban is issued bitcoin crashed to the ground from 4000 to 2900 although it made a huge impact on bitcoin but since many countries are adapting to bitcoin the price recovers and it made rise even higher so, therefore as long as the is a country supporting bitcoin, powerful countries like china can't stop bitcoin alone.

they state governments can not completely sabotage bitcoin, bitcoin will always be in a row, if any country is sabotaging bitcoin maybe its country does not want to be a developed and developing country because now is the age of its digital currency and saves the production of paper money.

But the question remains if all the major governments like US, China, Russia, UK, India, Japan form a cartel together to ban bitcoin. I really doubt bitcoin would have any demand. No ordinary citizen would like to buy somethin illegal. Some argue that darkweb would still use it. Yes they may but the demand for the currency would susbtantially decrease ultimately decreasing its value.

they can stop some country but not all country because they want to increase the economy of bitcoin to some country and bitcoin can lessen the number of unemployed when the didnt stop bitcoin.

I think it can not be done globally may be possible in a country that will make ban of bitcoin activities but globally it is very difficult to do because I think it is undeniable that actually bitcoin is now able to improve economic growth in a country so in my opinion there are still many countries who want to give policy to its citizens to get the freedom to follow bitcoin activities. And if a country is willing to legalize bitcoin as a legal activity this will certainly have a beneficial income for the government.

for me they can not stop the bitcoin unporket that they are all they can do that they want to even think of what bitcoin can help people and their users instead of stopping why they just do not it is better to support more people than to stop people from stopping too much of their power over bitcoin that is still silent for them so I can not stop the government from bitcoin.

Of course they can do it. The governments are powerful and they know that they can easily stop bitcoin by a simple order. They can create an order that will tell the people to stop using bitcoin and ban the exchanges of bitcoin in their country and after that it can easily stop the transaction of bitcoin and the market will react to it by having dumps and if all the governments will do the same thing then it will stop bitcoin.

In the current worldwide political scenario, if a big powerhouse opposes Bitcoin, expect the countries behind them to follow suite. A simple example would be China, banning all exchanges and applying pressure on other community counties to do the same. The profiters here are USA and allied nations which would not have imposed restrictions so at no point in time will ever country join together to stop Bitcoin as many of the nations have already realised its potential and intend to use it for their own betterment.

i think government could kill and stop bitcoin if they want and they can do it as fast as they can because they have unlimited source to do this. but i think the government will thinking to not stop or kill bitcoin and i think they are now is study about bitcoin, they have many questions about bitcoin and they need the answer. so they let us to still use bitcoin because they know that they can learn bitcoin from many ways and they want to see how bitcoin in future.

I dont think that they would be able because now crypto has almost spread everywhere and bitcoin is the base of all of them.. So Its a really difficult task to stop btc..

It would be nearly impossible for Governments to kill Bitcoin, even though they could certainly cause a lot of havoc and even push bitcoin into the underground, which could cause bitcoin to become a bigger pain in the ass for them.

So in that sense governments have a bit of a dilemma regarding how much to attempt to regulate bitcoin and how oppressive they can be towards bitcoin.

There has even been a bit of cockiness from bitcoin advocates in recent years because there is a certain level of recognition that governments have already lost their opportunity to really shut bitcoin down and to nip it in the bud.  So, in that sense, the longer bitcoin is out there and acceptable, the more resources it would take to suppress it.

In reality they can, but in virtual world they can’t. If the government of each country has a recommendation and approval to go against and banning cryptocurrency they can do that but they do anything to those who are well-trained or experienced computer users who can bypass any firewall that government will impose. This is actually be a worldwide cyber wars and crime simultaneously committed to oppose this king of regulations.

Powerful government, like US government, can stop Bitcoin, if they switch off Blokchain network. But it is not so easy, because whole Bitcoin network operates over the world, so even for US government this can be too complicated task. Other governments, like Great Britain or Germany, can not do any steps against Bitcoin network in fact. Bitcoin have more than 200 000 daily users, so people like Bitcoin.  

To stop bitcoin? no.
But some of the more powerfull goverments can have an immediate impact on the bitcoin if they announce something drastic like china that announced ICO ban, the people went into frenzy panic and bitcoin dropped like a rock.

Agree that governmenr in all nation can stop bitcoin, they can make it if they want but instead of forcing to stop bitcoin they are now learning on how to male it better. I think all government now are seeing the good benefits brings to all people, like here in our country i know that our government are now take a step to make bitcoin legalized our central bank launch an statement that they will support decentralized currency.

I do not think bitcoin will stop by the government because bitcoin is came from out of no where all people can able to mine bitcoin they can banned bitcoin if they want but they can not stop bitcoin to be popular and lots of people are continuous collecting bitcoin because we all know what can bitcoin gives to all of us. I am hoping that soon bitcoin would be our international currency and will create a physical money to spend in offline.

yes i agree because as i know bitcoin has no relationship with goverment since bitcoin started to emerge in the market. Correct me if im wrong. In my prediction even bitcoin has a dark side i think no one can stop bitcoin because of its higher value  now adays.  And thousands of supporters  That can protect bitcoin on its journey.

They can't stop Bitcoin by no means. They can create a situation where people don't use Bitcoin. But Bitcoin is a virtual money which can't be used in the real market. it is only for the virtual world.
yes, there is a way of stopping it to the government, they can buy all of the Bitcoin and they can seize the whole amount of Bitcoin. but regarding this case, the government needs to spend a massive amount of money to stop Bitcoin.

Theoretically, States can unite among themselves and to stifle bitcoin. It's enough to ban all exchanges and online exchangers to change cryptocurrency for Fiat. Will the country that will disagree with this, but the main countries were able to convince. It could be a trade war and even hot war, the revolution... it seems to Me that this is not happening because there is still consensus that bitcoin is destroying the global financial system.

Governments could regulate Bitcoin to the point that it’s not worth very much. This definitely could happen and is a reason why cryptocurrencies are high risk investments. The thing that makes me believe that it won’t happen is that there are many different countries around the world and they are not going to view Bitcoin the same way. Some countries may ban Bitcoin or want to ban it, but others may embrace it. So even if a country had major regulations against Bitcoin, they can’t make other countries do the same thing. It would be like trying to ban the internet or email. A single country or group of countries can’t stop the rest of the world from using it.

The financial institutions, government and banking sectors totally know what it means for them. This is a disruptive technology that has made people wiser and opened the eye of so many to how the system have always been manipulated as a result of the greed and profit of some top people all these while.
However, they can keep trying and we will keep seeing who will win. Give the Dog a chance to let loose after a while of being tied down and then you will see how fast it can run.

It seems to me that the faster the government will ban bitcoin than regulating it. If America will feel from the use of bitcoin the dollar will lose its position in the world then I think they will find a way to destroy bitcoin. They can organize any terrorist attack and to announce that paid for it in bitcoins. Then ban cryptocurrencies due to the fact that they are used by terrorists. Threaten countries that do not ban bitcoin stop all trade relations. What will happen then?

first thing you need to know is that why would a government want to do this? the government is not above the law, they can not force unacceptable and illogical laws upon their people. and people want bitcoin and this will only increase. not to mention that because bitcoin is global, banning bitcoin means shooting yourself in the foot!

additionally, since bitcoin is decentralized which means bitcoin is peer to peer, nobody can interfere in this. you can look at how torrents work. the government has been trying for years to fight illegal torrents aka pirating, but they have been failing miserably. and pirating is growing day by day.
bitcoin is not even illegal or immoral thing like pirating. it is like torrenting Ubuntu for example.

I do not think that governments or any other power could kill bitcoin, what they could do however is severely damage it and cause many difficulties and set backs, I feel that eventually we will reach the stage where either that happens or they accept bitcoin and it will become the new supercurrency across the world.

Imo they can't stop bitcoin and most of all they can't kill it. For example, let's compare btc to drugs(just exampe), no matter how powerful a country is, still they cant stop drug trade and so is btc which isn't illegal. They could just slow us down in achieving a higher price if they will try do it.

A big yes because if they really want to they can declare an all out war on bitcoin and impose a law that prohibiting to engage in bitcoin that anyone will be caught will be dealt accordingly and punishable of death. Do you think you can still continue to engage in bitcoin specially that if your life will be a concern? I think not therefore government can stop bitcoin but with a brute force.

They cant really stop bitcoin completely.I agree on the thing you do say they might able to slow down the progress or adoption but not completely to stop it no matter how powerful they are.Accepting the fact that not all countries would really have the same view into bitcoin.They might see negative things on most of them but there are countries would really able to see the usage of it and wouldnt tend to ban it but rather legalize it.If you would able to see on the things that they are doing now even on China.They fail to do such thing.

IT might be true that they cannot stop the bitcoin completely, but if some of the major ones do take some serious actions that would ahve a great impact on it, say for exemple china if thye ban it than the price will fall down since they have a great cut of the total of bitcoin users, and investors and major companies will stop investing in bitcoin because they don't want to risk their bussines, another way that they could stop it is by taxing it, it may not have a major impact but it would defently cause the prices to go down a lot.

I don't think government can stop bitcoin. they cannot control bitcoin, how could they kill it? they might be able to ban it in their country as like china do so, but they cannot ban bitcoin in other countries as well or even the whole world. if they wanna do so, they have to buy all bitcoins until all bitcoin users do not have any bitcoin anymore. so there will not anybody who will do transaction dealing with bitcoin. and it will slowly disappear.

I think that my country want to kill bitcoin because the manager bank of my country banned people in the country to join bitcoin :) I'm positive think and I'm respect my country, although I 'm lose out many coin  ???

None of the above can happen btc network works because of mining and it is spread out across the world stopping every single miner is impossible. Getting accepted is also not possible because of btc not having any legal entity.

What you are saying doesn't make any sense if we won't be able to withdraw our funds to fiat what's the use of holding btc , why would people even accept it the only reason it is so famous today is because of it's value and it is also a liquid asset if that goes it will have no purpose.

You dumb if something like this will happen the government will have to spend billions and let me remind you the only way government makes money is from tax or other fees charged if they use it just buy btc they are wasting people's funds and don't forget there are thousands of alts still out there.

Do you thing government really cares if people are rich or poor they simply see btc as something which is cutting their revenue and giving more freedom and power to public. This is not a fairly tale world we live in a place where governments don't give a damn about people.

Why buy all the coins? It seems to me that if enough bitcoin to unite against the US and China. We miss the ability to buy all the necessary things directly with bitcoins. Without this bitcoin is not a currency and through the process of sharing it on the Fiat, we become defenseless against the government.

for as long as the government holds the power, they can stop anything as long as legality is concern.  In the constitution, it all states there. the power to tax, eminent domain.  as far as there is threat within the states, they can do anything.

The governments are only all powerful if you believe them to be. Thing is there are a lot of people that are waking up to the fact that they are powerful and governments are powerless, but we were giving them the power so now we're taking it back with Bitcoin.

You are very right because the value and the importance for the bitcoin and the other crypto currency is increasing day by day and now almost all the people are aware of the importance of the bitcoin, big investment in now being happen for the long time in the bitcoin it has make the bitcoin worldwide currency so the power of the bitcoin is gradually increasing more and more it is not decreasing.

Contrary for what mostly posted here, do you guys really  t hink that bitcoin is still unstoppable if all governments in the world will pushly killed it? Please don't jsut be optimistic.

How come exchanges will work now? How come merchants will accept bitcoin now? Do you think doing trading will be legit? Let's take the scene in reality. If all governments will pushed and decided to take down bitcoin, it will happened no matter.

Of course back to current situation, it will not happen by higher chances.

Which countries are strong ? I can say Usa , China , Russia  and if these countries want to stop Bitcoin  these countries and   their people cant use Bitcoin but it could be only these countries ,  if we are talking about  Bitcoin markets , it is not living only China or Usa or Russia and we know China had so much speculation about exchanges for Bitcoin but Bitcoin still powerful and still working . Bitcoin is big market and Bitcoin will be more powerful day by day and countries will not think to stop bitcoin .

If they could kill bitcoin they may have done it before but they failed to do so, that's why at the end they have to accept this digital asset. Bitcoin popularity has increased twice and thrice during this year due to it's high demand and rising price. It is much difficult to eliminate or remove a thing which is loved by people and they don't want to loose it at any cost.

I think they have been dealing with it for the last couple of months now. Why just today? Because they are really threaten by it, however, it will take them a lot of effort to quash bitcoin and their efforts will be futile and they will totally give it up because its going nowhere and it will just cost them crazy bills. Then can try all they want but I think no one can really stop bitcoin for me. Eventhough they would buy everything, which I think is very unlikely for them to. Maybe the best thing for them to do is really is just regulate it and recognized bitcoin as a new revolutionary way of changing the landscape of world economics.

Even if they successfully banned bitcoin, other crypto-currencies will rise and take the lead. There is no absolute way that they could do such a thing unless they shut the internet down, thus no more use of bitcoin. Added to that, I do not think they will ban it because it has become a way of life.

Bitcoin is used as a payment method in Japan. The majority of people still do not know about bitcoin. It is still not a big threat to the government and banks. Furthermore, "Bitcoiners" will always defend bitcoin even if the world's governments are against it.

It is no denying that China affected the bitcoin's value, but  bitcoin easily get back to its track. This only proves that bitcoin is not dependent on a powerful country but really more on the individual users. Bitcoin will only stop once people stop from using it, that may happen when most numbered bitcoin user country banned bitcoin. Let us hope that countries may see bitcoin as not a threat but an aid for development and advancement.

If the powerful governments around the world come to a agreement to stop bitcoin and any other crypto currency, they certainly can do it because internet can be controlled by them. However, it is the last thing they want to do. Government is mainly chosen by the people around the world where democracy exists. The main reason why we choose government so that we can have job, start a business with ease and proper infrastructure with low crime rates. But the majority of the governments miserably fails to do their job.

In such times, if their citizens can earn some income without asking for a job, that's a good news for them. Because those who have an alternate profession, a major percentage of them won't look for jobs which certainly reduce the pressure from the already worsened job market scenario. Crypto currency market has a given a lot of people an immense opportunity to earn money through it and have a decent life. So if a government bans bitcoin and any other crypto currency, a majority of the youth vote bank will turn against them. The politicians are power hungry animals and they usually love their position more than their wife. They won't let it happen.

Bitcoin is a blessing to many people who are earning some money to live a decent life. If government takes that away from them, their end will start from that very moment. 

Of course banks and strong goverments can stop bitcoin. Nowadays most crypto users buy and sell crypto currencies officialy. So it is obvious that if you make something official somebody can stop you because he knows about your movements.

If the governments would be able to shut down the entirety of bitcoin's mining operation around the globe and do mass arrests of people using bitcoin, sure. But if not, then no, they cannot stop bitcoin completely. There needs to be a lot of fear-mongering to happen before bitcoin users give in. Also, laws shoupd be written intelligently so that no legal loopholes would ever exist should the governments do massive arrests.

If we summarize it all, the answer should be fairly simple: no, the governments can't stop bitcoin completely.

There are a lot of things to consider before government could stop bitcoin. As of today, bitcoin has gaining popularity in terms of easy to use and easy to access and ofcourse this could also use as payment. I think even in other countries the're trying to stop bitcoin to people but it coudnt success because bitcoin has leading the most use.

Powerful governments are able to do anything so in my opinion they will be able to stop or kill bit coin if they want as they have unlimited powers but I don’t think that governments will take this step because bit coin is getting more popularity day by day and its prices are rising high which is very profitable for the investors and also for the economy of country.

I think you are right up to some extent that bitcoin has gained too much popularity worldwide and now it will be a very difficult task for any government to stop bitcoin and as you mentioned that many countries have legalized bit coin because bit coin is becoming strong and after all it is money. Specially in modern countries where the users are more eager to use online currency and so bitcoin is the best choice with them to use for their online shopping or business.

The governments have the power to run the whole country according to the rule of law so I think that it will be not a hard task for a powerful government to get the control of bit coin in their concern country. I would like to suggest that instead of discouragement every government should plan a strategy and introduce a new and modern technology for monitoring of all illegal activities regarding bit coin.

I think not because bitcoin is a digital item whose function is the same as gold that the price is not set by the government so the government can not prohibit the circulation of bitcoin. The government also can not freeze the ownership of bitcoin and bitcoin is also very easy to move to another wallet or can be easily taken out of the country so to ban the circulation of bitcoin is very difficult.

Thats right. the government will not be able to forcibly shut down bitcoin because bitcoin is in decentralized network so the government will not be able to close bitcoin even with their power. perhaps what the government can do is to provide regulation and prohibition for the use of bitcoin and you know it's enough to have an bad effect on the bitcoin market

Even the government official wanted to stop bitcoin i sure they cant do that because bitcoin is not for one country entire world know bitcoin so that they cant stop the spreading the knowledge and all about bitcoin absolutely right now continuously increasing the value of bitcoin so that no one can stop bitcoin.

Yes they can't declare bitcoin as illegal without any basis but what government can do is regulate the use of it which may cause for people to stop patronizing bitcoin since it will just be another centralized currency. Another thing that government can do is they can declare mining as illegal which may cause to the stop on processing of the transactions for the coin and will eventually cause to people stop using it.

They can declare bitcoin as a illegal but they can't stop bitcoin.Because the more day will come the more bitcoin will be popular.If they really want to stop bitcoin they should buy 21 million bitcoin which they can't do in their total lifetime

All this could happen and yes they can go that extreme but the issue is that in as much has government wants to exercise it's power, they need a reason to back whatever decision they would be taking and because every government in the powerful countries operate with some freedom for it's citizen, it becomes difficult to go that extreme as it would mean punishing some set of people who prefer to see new ways of doing things and not even hiding it because they have no ulterior motive to doing that.

Government and Banks are having there own agenda on suppressing Bitcoin. What every they planned or how strong may they be, they can only slow down the progress and development of Bitcoin, however, they cannot stop Bitcoin.

This is not the first time that strong and big country tried to stop Bitcoin. but they all failed.

If every country really started cracking down, sure bitcoins would be put into a choke hold VUT that's not going to happen because so many cou tries fully support it. Even if bitcoins where a japan only currency, they would still hold huge value. Keep them no matter what happens in your county.

Well this is my thinking, I'm not saying Bitcoin would die completely and lose the dedicated user base that it has built so far. I just think that it would not be able to grow and stuck here, as what it is today, if governments decided that's what they wanted to happen. A lot of people on this forum don't understand, or try to understate the amount of power that the government really holds.

I think there is nothing that the government can't do, if they wanted war, they could easily get it, if they wanted change, they could easily do it, so if they wanted to stop bitcoin and the cryptocurrency, I think its gonna be easy for them. There are people who are gonna do against them, but I think, they will win, unless they see something in bitcoin that could benefit them.

Actually government has the power to eliminate bitcoin if all of the governments agree to banned it together, it's mean that all country must banned bitcoin then bitcoin will slowly die, one government banning wont effect anything on bitcoin there are so many ways to bypass the banning and bitcoin has helped some people to have a better life and decreasing unemployment rate, so some of the government won't stop bitcoin

They could definitely disrupt a lot of the norms for bitcoin trading, for example they could pressure exchanges to shut down or even censor bitcoin related sites. China is a primary example of this happening right now, so it is possible.

However, let's get this clear. Not all countries are going to ban bitcoin, even if they ban bitcoin, the network will still thrive, and businesses will just move to countries where bitcoin has been legalized such as Japan.

some of the people here are getting the right answer but me i don't really have the right answer because for me the bitcoin cryptocurrencies is tallied in the internet, what i mean is if there is internet there will be bitcoin, they can't stop it unless they shut the internet.

With ease i believe, but on the public scale only. This means public conference/meeting regarding cryptocurrency would be restricted to a point where prices or related activities went underground again. Still the blockchain technology would persist as there are not geographically limited, new coins would grow. Passing a law which disallow citizen to own bitcoins is unlikely though as that is really unhelpful in anyway as it's not like the entire world would follow. Exterminating Bitcoin existence is laughable though, maybe banning national ISP would help in this context.

But not all the government of every nation have the same sentiment about bitcoin, for example Indonesia warns its citizen to stay away to cryptocurrency while Japan embrace it and it promotes to its citizen that they should accept bitcoin. So , I doubt that bitcoin would be totally eliminate, and I think if the second example is done by other nations, the countries that have negative impression about bitcoin would change their mind.

I think the government could really do whatever they want, if they want to stop bitcoin then they could do it. Government is just so powerful that they could be anywhere, any business, any  people's life as long as they would want to. So I guess stopping the bitcoin would be the same for them, its gonna be as the way they want it to be.

They would not be able to globally control ,ban or regulate bitcoin.Not all countries would agree to do so.Here,japan supports and adopts bitcoin and china takes stand against bitcoin and wants to stop its progress within the country.

The only thing that they could do is imply strict regulations on exchanges,asking them to strictly follow KYC and further imply rules so that exchanges itself would feel very hard to survive and close them by themselves.

But the bitter truth is that bitcoin would survive in other parts of the world and would continue to progress.

i think even the most powerful government with banks alliance will not stop bitcoin, because they cant stop the flow and influence of this bitcoin in most of people in the world that gets involve in this investment project, as we can see now, more article and blogs that against or has a negative content about bitcoin are spreading all over the net, but who cares? if all of us (bitcoin holder) continue believing and supporting bitcoin, no one can stop bitcoin even the most powerful government had a power to stop this success.

Governments can do a lot of harm to Bitcoin usage, if they want. For example, if they are interested then they can order the exchanges to be closed down (including Localbitcoins). They can make the possession of Bitcoins a criminal offense. It may be very difficult to trace down the coins to individuals, but with adequate effort the authorities can trace a few individuals and then they can publicize their case to scare others.

Many users are going to resign to their full time job to make bitcoins. The government will consider it and they realized that bitcoin has many aspect in life.

Its an interesting question - but I think that any government that did this would basically be saying in no uncertain terms that they are the final arbiters of all money created.

It would mean that they are saying that you are not allowed to trade freely and that you are stuck with the currency of the country that you trade with.

If all governments said this then it would mean that they have created a monetary alliance that is stronger than Bitcoin because they could easily "outlaw" Bitcoin (using the legal system - they wouldn't be able to shut it down technically) and make their new currency legal tender.

If that were to happen then there would be no need for Bitcoin because it would mean that there would now be a borderless currency (which is one of the main value propositions of Bitcoin) and most likely the price of Bitcoin would drop.

If, however, they went about outlawing Bitcoin without providing an alternative - its likely that it wouldn't be a universal deal - there would still be countries that value the economic freedom of the individual above outlawing Bitcoin and would most likely not join the alliance - meaning Bitcoin could be mined and distributed legally there.

They can't kill it. They can deter 95% or more of users which is as good as doing so by strangling the exchanges. A Bitcoin that can't easily be exchanged suddenly becomes a lot less attractive to most people.

Governments together can kill bitcoin, but I believe that governments across the world will never unite and have same agendas. Powerful governments have influence just in some parts of the world, but they can't cover all the world, they can't cover their own territories because there are illegal actions done everywhere.

I don't really think they could kill Bitcoin in the way you mean it by overregulating it, though I certainly see that as a legitimate point of concern. This is what now happens in China and will likely happen in Russia too in the next few months. Bitcoin and other cryptos depend on exchanges but such exchanges like Bitfinex, which seems to get most Bitcoin trading nowadays, are registered in territories which are rather liberal in this respect. In this manner, overregulation even in the US and EU may not have the effect the governments may be looking for.

Technically stopping bitcoin is not possible till the last country on earth is allowing it. We need to understand that bitcoin is a peer to peer crypto currency. All it needs is a blockchain which keeps the ledger of transactions. Here no central authority could decide what can be modified or done once transaction is done(block is mined). The way govt has been controlling the economy by threatening a person or company was with there ability to  confiscate the cash and seize or froze the bank accounts. In other words govt could disable a person from using currency. And with help of other countries and organizations like InterPol they managed to force their action in other countries as well. Of course other countries also do the same. With bitcoin there is no such control available for govt. Thus they cannot kill it completely. However they could put curbs on bitcoin or crypto currency to the level that will demoralize people from using bitoin. Or they could even make it illegal to posses the coins. Or heavily tax the coins and companies which deals in bitocin.

I think yes since you have stated on the subject that they are powerful government so I think they can put bitcoin into a total shut down in any time they want. I think, government can't like literally close down bitcoin, destroy all the mines and somehow prohibit having a bitcoin wallet. So in a way, for some geeks and bitcoin enthusiasts, they can mine and send their coins like forever. But even as simple thing as closing down exchanges would kill bitcoin. Exchanges have to meet the countries regulations and they can't be random places and if there are no means to change bitcoins to dollars most of the investors and traders would abandon it totally. And with no shops or places where you can spend your bitcoins, they will become worthless.

For sure the exchanges is where it will hurt but that would not and cannot stop the community. That is the gospel of satoshi in the first place, the power is in our hands and unless we want to relinquish that power, I do not see how it can be possible for them to ever stop it. Any store won't accept it if they declare it only illegal and I am sure the whole country worldwide would do that and if as community we decide to make use of it as currency, then we are good to go.

If ever the government and banks have agreed upon banning bitcoin in their country, then people can't do anything but follow the order especially if there are consequences of violating that order. It would be hard to stop bitcoin completely. Every country has strict laws against drugs and drug trafficking with severe punishments, and in many countries people are executed for selling drugs, but did it ever stop anyone who is involved in the business? It just made risk premiums higher. Of course, bitcoin is not drugs while bitcoin users are certainly not junkies, and its price will likely crash instead of rising if a universal ban is established, but they won't be able to eradicate it completely just like they can't weed out cannabis.

I am always concerned about the government. They could really do so by implying new laws and regulation on how to handle the crypto currencies. However people can always plead in front of the law to make the life easier and humanly by putting the humble request. This is what law gives, a power to human rights. Governments are collecting taxes on bitcoin and income from the bitcoin. In countries which are recognizing bitcoin or crypto currency as property will attract the property tax, whereas in countries where bitcoin is recognized as the accumulated wealth will be taxed under the wealth tax. This wealth tax is applied to the gold, silver, other precious metal and stones like diamond, ruby, perls etc etc. 21M bitcoins is not going to kill the bitcoin, in fact it is that number which has kept bitcoin users loyal to it. Because of limit on crypto coins, there is trust among the users that if tomorrow bitcoin touches a million per coin then devels wont take advantage of it by increasing more coin limit. Its possible for governments to restrict bitcoin usage but I don't it's possible to be stopped

Powerful governments can do whatever they want to, this has always been the case so it includes killing BTC if they want to. For example they can make up new laws making having BTC illegal and criminal. Meaning they can arrest and detain you as if you were in possession of lots of hard drugs. They can pass these kind of laws under the fog of that BTC is too easily used to fund terrorism, illegal activities etc. This year alone the US justice department seized tons of BTC by seizing and closing darkweb and an exchange.
Also the banks could easily destroy BTC without any help of government at all, all they have to do is forbid any exchange of BTC into real currency. If you can't pay out your BTC into your bank account then all you are left with is the option to sell it on the street like a 5$ crack dealer.

They tried, but they could not and they ended up coming to terms of the fact that they cannot. They are obviously trying to frustrate the efforts but at the end, it ended up sending just an empty message. These guys already know that the power is out from them and obviously why they will try to create their own crypto which no one will accept or possibly even try to push B2X on us ;D , which we already know the truth of what is coming. They have failed and they will keep failing.

The market cap coin stamp is enormous, user is global and bitcoin is decentralized so no matter how strong the government can not stop bitcoin.

Even the powerest Gov't cannot stop Bitcoin! You see China banned Bitcoin since October, and now the value of Bitcoin is growing rapidly than before!

currently very difficult to destroy bitcoin because bitcoin users has increasing rapidlly although there are some countries attempts to banned bitcoin but they cannot prohibit their people because bitcoin is independent and there was no countries able to control bitcoin but in my point of view there is one chance if government want to destroy bitcoin they can shutting down internet connection as the prime thing for use bitcoin and if there is no internet connection bitcoin will be useless and people will stop using it but indeed impossible to shutting down internet

If desired, the government could destroy Bitcoin. However, they can not ban people from using it because all account information is untrue and they will not be able to investigate the account holder. They can only adjust Bitcoin and make it more user-friendly, since they will give up Bitcoin.

I don't think government can do anything to Bitcoin (not at least indirectly though) But let's assume that they want to remove Bitcoin from the Earth, then the only thing they need to do is to somehow stop the block chain network which is impossible.

Governments if come together can definitely reduce the demand by banning or making cryptocurrencies illegal. But they can't completely eradicate Bitcoin or cryptos from the system. Bitcoin is not available in any physical form but is only a data which is indistinguishable. There is no way government can completely ban something on internet. It is impossible.

It will be difficult for the world government to ban bitcoin completely from existence because they them will be affected in the process of trying to ban bitcoin. One way I know in which the world government can ban bitcoin is by them to close the internet which I think is not impossible for such a thing to happen in this 21st century.

They couldn't kill it completely, but they can prevent mass adoption by simply outlawing it. ???

United they stand, divided they fall. If countries unite the possibility of bitcoin being thrown out of the society is very High, but at the end of day expecting countries to unite on a mutual common platform is impossible,that too when their opposite interest is bitcoin. They would just make some regulatory measures at the most. But the thing with regulations is that people find some way or the other to against it and keep their own interests as top most priority and will find an opportunity cost for bitcoin is no other way is found.

You are right bro! They wanted to not like they did not. They were being cautious though knowing there is really nothing to stop and funny enough, the more they kept coming with the attack, the more they kept realizing it was even growing the more and becoming even more unstoppable.

Actually government support towards bitcoin is also a huge factor that maybe affect bitcoins existence. But it doesn't mean that they can wipe out bitcoin at all, not even a powerful government. Considering that China is one of the powerful country, but what happen to bitcoin after leaving it will keep increasing instead of crashing. It is impossible for the government to have full control over Bitcoin unless they bought all 21m Bitcoin which will make holders happy and killing the Bitcoin at the same time. If i were part of the government since i cannot control Bitcoin i will just call a meeting and get votes to make the government invest in Bitcoin and find ways to integrate Bitcoin to our country. Exactly! No one has the power to control bitcoin. The government can never find ways to control because they can never stop a single miner. Maybe they can only do some regulations about it. If they really want to stop bitcoin, they could have than that before. They knew what bitcoin's capacity is and we might know, what if one of government officials is secretly into bitcoin, right?

They could not completely kill it because there would always be others who would take the risk even if it is illegal in their country. However, they can slow down the growth of mass adoption because many would not want to risk to be imprisoned or be fined by using it. I, for one, would not want to do something illegal so I would just let go of it even if there is a big potential to earn significant amount because there would be other opportunities out there that would not make me be imprisoned. However, if they will just implement insane taxes instead of making it illegal and I can still profit from it then I will continue to use it.

Just if in one day they unite against bitcoin, there's always some people who find a hole and probably using it underground. By that, the government would need to put an effort to find the underground transaction and arrest the criminals but still not going to give the government any benefits becasue basically they forbid it and will seem to be worthless in real life, instead, the government will just wasting money on their effort to find out any bitcoin users in their country.

Well, Bitcoin doesn't really need much network bandwidth to have nodes running and validating transactions. Someone with a basic 3g connection from a burner phone(bought with cash) could easily get internet from their phone onto their computer and run node/wallet software(mining too if it was absolutely needed).

The governments won't be able to forbid bitcoin on all earth. Because there will always be countries which will permit to use cryptocurrency in own territory. I see many options on how they can instantly kill Bitcoin. And I think the best possible ways are tracking down all the wallet providers and blocking them or going to all internet service providers and block all the websites and wallet related to Bitcoin. The government has its power to do due on its full of sources. Bitcoin is demand and popular nowadays, in the world of crypto currency and gives income to those jobless people in the society by working hard and passionate in bitcoin. Well the government can do whatever they want because they have the power to ban something or make something illegal but then bitcoin is decentralize and its anonymous and the only way they can stop bitcoin is to cut the internet which is very impossible to happen. You know they could have thought about it at some point but they also know that would be sending the wrong messages. All the government around the world could not even cooperate to do little things, you think it is a currency that has gone massive that they would now come together to attack. Think about it, that is like attacking the masses altogether, that is like stopping them from doing whatever they wish to do.

Governments have a limit and the only thing they can ever do at this stage is to regulate it, because trying to stop something that does not wish to stop and the community is growing stronger, is just like looking for trouble, which may even cause revolution.

i think it is impossible for the government to completely stop Bitcoin. I would hate to live in your world where you think governments are powerful. They have absolutely zero power in reality, but virtually people believe they do because of FIAT money. FIAT money has been taking power from the people and giving it to TPTB. Government cannot do nothing about bitcoin. Bitcoin is decentralized and no one can stop it aside from internet. Internet is the heart of bitcoin, without this bitcoin is useless. But, we also know that no one owns internet and even government can't stop it. If they had been able to find Satoshi  Nakomotto, you think they won't have threatened the man to give up his mission or probably even if it is a group. They can restrict exchanges but that would eventually be to their own detriments and you cannot just restrict exchanges without at least a reasonable conclusion why you should and you will definitely have a policy in place for any exchange that wants to go on with their daily activities.

May. They can control their citizens. They can investigate the IP address access to Bitcoin sites and know who is visiting. They can block transfers and receive money from abroad without a clear purpose. If they want, they can do everything to lock Bitcoin. For any other reason they may ban bitcoin, but knowing the percentages of profits bitcoin is making now a days and the economical war that would be starting in near future, when all these things combine, bitcoin is claimed as illegal but they can’t make it to end. Yes! that is very easy. Government will just declare martial rule vs bitcoin that anyone will engage in digital currencies will be shoot to kill or a lifetime imprisonment. I think the government has the ability to remove bitcoin. One thing I can see is when they make a law that prohibits bitcoin and by using bitcoin you will get punished. I think many people will stop using bitcoin because they are afraid on their government. This can be stopped by the government but many will still continue using bitcoin. I can hardly find any person living on this earth or any government who can actually stop bitcoin. it is because of the reason that bitcoin is decentralized in nature which actually means that there is no one out of us who can actually control bitcoin.

I don't think they can. I mean, we know that they had been trying for years to somewhat have a control over bitcoin but with no luck, they can't. Bitcoin is made that way so that we can no longer be in control by the government. Every transactions were making are always being monitored by the bank and the government if we are using real money but with bitcoin, they can't and that is the beauty of it.

Even though the strong governance of the government of a certain country can totally make bitcoin to be shut down on their country, they could not still do it because the concern of its citizens or people is also a must have before deciding or issuing a mandatory decision to put out bitcoin on their lives. The difference with those issues is that bitcoin puts their fate at risk, if bitcoin becomes as powerful as we think it can get then governments in their current form will need to stop existing, it is going to be impossible to maintain the huge governments we have now, and that is something they hate, most people employed in the government are overpaid in my country and in most countries too, once they face the private sector they realize how little they are going to be paid so you can be sure that everyone related to the government will fight for what they consider to be their rights.

They could if Bitcoin wasn't as big as it is right now. Bitcoin has been growing so big that "fighting" Bitcoin right now is like fighting a losing battle. I'm sure it is also not in their best interest to stop Bitcoin completely. That will require too much work and little to no benefit.

What government should do, instead, is regulate Bitcoin loosely. The government could classify it as an asset or anything else and start taxing profit from Bitcoin trading if they haven't already. I think you made a good point here. If governments try to ban bitcoin or make it illegal, people can still try to use it underground anyway, and they will spend a lot more time and money, trying to catch those who are using it illegally. If they just regulate it, to make it harder to use it for illegal activities, like they try to do with fiat already, then they will be able to get tax revenues for those that have no intentions of doing any illegal things with it, and just want to use it because they find it convenient.

As powerful as the governments and any other private banks, they can do as much as they can to stop or erase the face bitcoin in the society but I think they can't stop or kill it completely for as long people believe in it. Government have the power,  but not totally removed it in the existence. They could ban it like in China.  Bitcoin is circulating now worldwide and the government have no idea who are the holder of bitcoin. I've watched the movie "bitcoin hacker". and there, the subject matter is:
the government is worried if bitcoin is used as a means of money laundering by the mafia. then, the government and the state police are trying to find the bitcoin holders. after watching the movie, I also became worried if it happened. hopefully nobody takes advantage of bitcoin for criminal purposes, so there is no problem with the government and bitcoin can continue to exist.

Well im not an internet expert but i think that they can put a stop to its people by regulating or putting a internet censorship over its population, just like China has over its citizen they have some internet censorship but i dont know to what extent.

Not really the US monitors all the Internet and many of the servers run through the US so they can in theory block a great degree of Internet traffic and that includes bitcoin as well, but at the end it does not matter as long as there are other countries that accept bitcoin, this is why I think in the future governments will have no other option but to accept bitcoin whether they like it or not.

Yeah, I'm sure governments will love to erase bitcoin from the minds of the people but they cannot do that and they understand very clearly they cannot make people to not adopt bitcoin, they have been trying to buy time but it seems they are finally realizing that is going to fail as well, so they are going to try to regulate exchanges and they are soon going to realize that is going to fail once again.

I also agree that they can't stop bitcoin to live so long and help people like us because we know that all people that use bitcoin really trusted this for all years it comes.

i think, yes they can, with the use of international laws regarding forex, tax and any laws stated in each country,  they can unite to form a law to halt mining by tax laws, with mobilized advertisement or blockout news regarding bitcoin and mis interpret it as illegal, they can, but let's us not give them the idea, let us enjoy bitcoin while we can.

Disagree, in theory governments should care about the well being of their people, but how many times have you seen misplaced policies that instead of helping people damage people and those policies are left in place, governments have learned to become self serving so even if they know that people are going to benefit from bitcoin they are not going to make it legal if they think bitcoin is going to affect their interests.

Goverment is the higher power of all transaction in every country. We the people also are belong to goverment. I agree with that, government can take decisions whether to ban it or not, ultimately the decision takers are the government. Many countries still not given green signal to BC, recently China also banned the use of bitcoin. Higher authority have all the power to regulate it once govt says no, nobody can able to stop it.

The government is so powerful that they can able to control or cease everything within their grasp. They could declare martial law against bitcoin and other digital currencies in which if people will use bitcoin they will face consequences of not following the law like life imprisonment or most worst is punishable by death. The governments do not have the last word when it comes to anything, at the end people are the ones to take the decision, just look at the war on drugs, marijuana has been illegal for a long time and yet it is the illegal drug with the biggest usage and in many countries governments are giving up and making it legal, if people keep using bitcoin despite being illegal that is going to force the government to accept bitcoin.

Governments are certainly not as powerful as they want to be or want us to believe they are. We hear it now and then that some especially rogue government has been overthrown by people, so it is not like they are almighty and all that. Governments will find ways to limit, control, and perhaps eliminate Bitcoin and other crypto currencies if they want to but they failed. Bevause I believe that even big governments have the power to crush bitcoin yet they cant kill it for sure. Because the technology behind it is too powerful to be controlled so the digital currency won't disappear.. So I don't think that Bitcoin is an easy target to get down.

If all the countries will ban BTC then for example an overall BAN, people will have no choice, especially the legit ones will just sell all their coins and some miners will be forced to halt their operations BTC price will incredibly drop, it's not a matter of do you think they could stop BTC, but as we all know BTC purely relies on its supply and its users so even if there are people who are still using it in case of an overall BAN, there will be a lot of people who will sell and BTC will be again go in the dark market only.

Don't think the governments would put that much effort into totally destroying Bitcoin. It would have to be a major effort undertaken by almost all the governments in the world. I don't think so...because many people who are the investor put thier big capital to this kind of investment.and the bitcoin is in the long run... Asa we observed.. Government is very powerful and all the governments of the world combined together could influence the state of the Bitcoin very much. They couldn't probably destroy the Bitcoin but they could lower the usage of it with the law. They could bring legal orders that would forbid the usage of the Bitcoin. Every transaction can be tracked and in the end, they could see the final user which got the share of the transaction. Most powerful of agencies can track the Bitcoin way even if we are blind believing we are anonymous. The government can ruin the whole system of the decentralization but that will not happen because the powerful leaders are also using their share of the "cookie".

It depends on each countries government since each government have their own policy to follow. Japan government have approved it because they feel and believe that bitcoin is the future money. However, China have stopped because it needs their paper currency should exists and don't want to further think of future prospects. Banning would be possible but talking or pertaining on a complete ban isnt really possible which we do know making underground transactions can really be done even no matter how government would prohibited such usage of bitcoin. No one can easilg demolish bitcoin. Because bitcoin is decentralized and no one knows who are the mastermind or the real managaer of this whole digital money. Maybe the only thing that government can do in this kind of matter is giving some tax to those bounty hunters and holders.

Government can do anything at their own country but that think must be visible. There are some governments who banned BTC at their country but if people want then it is very hard to stop. Now a days almost 99% of online program processes by blind way.

I think, depending on the leader in a country, they have reasons why other country banned bitcoin. Especially governments are not able to tract payments in bitcoin because it become very much difficult for governments to audit transactions and perform their obligations. If the governments could not benefit from bitcoin, then I think they will do everything to ban bitcoin. Governments always wanted percentage from all "business related estanlishments" and money generating products. Bitcoin is not exempted to that because it is always related to money. If Government cannot ban bitcoin, then atleast they could regulate or control it in all ways they wanted.

Wel there are people who will do everything and go through extremes to have access to bitcoins even if governments illegalize it. Yes it is possible but I don't think they are going to do it. With the fast growing Bitcoin community and the thousands of people that experience the changes brought by Bitcoin, even the government themselves know and saw the potential and the big help it can do to people's lives. They may regulate it, at least try to have a bit of control over it but not totally killing it. it's like killing the goose that lays golden eggs.

But we dont have a one world government. Every nation has his own government and own principles. One or more country can destroy bitcoin in their own country but that will only be in their country and not the whole world. Definitely, as we all know that the government can create in their own law and yes it's possible ti kill bitcoin in their particular country. What governments can do is to make it harder for the people to exchange bitcoin into the local fiat. But that's it.

The governments could stop bitcoin. First,  the governments could make bitcoin illegal to buy/sell/own bitcoin. This would reduce the demand for bitcoin for anything other than black market transactions. Second, they could increase pressure on anyone exchanging bitcoin for cash to record the transaction and identity of whomever they bought or sold from. This would make it much harder to use bitcoin anonymously and also substantially reduce the ease of using bitcoin. If the governments could do those two thing,  it would stop bitcoin I guess.

           I don't think that any government could stop Bitcoin since Bitcoin is a decentralized cryptocurrency that the transaction is done without any third party interference and it is done all over the globe freely. Since Bitcoin is not linked to any territory or financial institute we need only network connections and wallets for the transaction it is not necessary for exchanges so I don't think that even powerful governments could stop Bitcoin even if they wanted.

Sure, they can do it. A government has big power to push bitcoin's activity in a country. Even they can't to stop 100 percent. So, I think to make Bitcoin will survive, we have to collaborate with government. I mean, we have to pay taxes for digital asset, fee transaction, or something else. I think the government cannot fully stop bitcoin but it can decrease its users by using verifications and age limit. They might add rules and regulations that can hinder users to have proper transactions.The government can also ban bitcoin if they are really that desperate and we all know that if the users decrease the value of the bitcoin decreases.It is like a direct proportion between the users and the bitcoin value. Bitcoin has no centre to attack. There is no single organisation or person that controls Bitcoin and transactions don't go through a central clearing house there is really no way a regulator can stop people from downloading Bitcoin wallets and sending each other bitcoins. If they shut down the internet, people will send each other Bitcoin via SMS and if they shut down the electricity supply, people will use solar and battery-powered solutions.

But for current market capitalization which compared to other like gold is not really that high, by having so many capital you can easily manipulate bitcoin and I think that's the only thing that makes bitcoin still vulnerable against attack, also there's 51% attack aswell.
We need to take this into account that there's still vulnerability in bitcoin that needs to be solved, just hoping that the development of bitcoin will eventually solve all these.

Uhm… can the government do everything? I’m not sure about that but anyway, if I’m asked whether the government can stop Bitcoin, Eehm.. I will say yes. I was once discussing with someone on the same topic and he said that the only way that the government can destroy Bitcoin is with the help of quantum computers.

I think not all government to all country is have the same thinking about bitcoin some of them think that bitcoin is a big help to their economy and their people. And some them are ban bitcoin to their country because they scared that bitcoin will be choose their people than to their own currency. Yes the government have the power to restrain and allow any form of investment, products, medium of exchange. For some reason I think the government would only do this if they have seen that bitcoin from their area have cause some problems like drug trades illegal activities and the like the government have the power to cease the use of this medium to lessen the illegal activities that its citizens have conducted.
