Post by: WiseOldOwl on June 28, 2011, 07:26:16 AM
Hello Everyone ;D

I have been working on a service I'd like to share with you.
I have just finished it enough to release it so be gentle it is still a work in progress.

http://betterbitcoinbureau.info

We keep tabs on businesses and individuals that trade in bitcoin. You can look-up a Business/Individual for free and see what info we have archived on them. To list a business, or file an official complaint we do charge a small fee. Those fees are denominated in bitcoin.

Together we can add integrity to anonymity.

First 10 individuals/businesses with an established reputation to list with us receive a free month :)

Let me know what you think, and I will add whoever signs up asap.

You may want to look into a site redesign already.

The register page is bad... why put images next to everything when you can just say that it applies to all of the fields?  The only difference there is the username field, everything else is the exact same.  Also the little images look like crap because of the white border, I would suggest fixing them (it would take like 2 minutes in mspaint).

When I mouse over 'Search Listings' it doesn't give the Business/Individual option unless I'm already on the page, and when it does give the options I can't select either.  I try to move my mouse down and it just goes away.

Another website to register on?  It would be better to have openID or something to login with.

Edit:
Lastly, what's with the open quotations at the start of the title on every page?

-Fixed images around registration*

-I have the ability to implement OpenID now, I just want to make sure I am not sacrificing any functionality first. but it will most likely be up soon.

-The listings rollover thing ill get too soon but it should still let you click the link. It lets me.

-Open quotations was in the template for some forsaken reason, they will be gone shortly. lol

Thank you for checking it out,
I need more input like tysat's.

What do you offer that is not already offered by heatware or the #bitcoin-otc web of trust? Those 2 services are free btw.

Another thing I just realized... orange text on that background?  Find better color combos if you want to be legit.

Apparently Heatware or w/e doesn't offer much, because I have never heard of them. It really doesnt matter what you offer if you arent advertising your service.
I think a better question might be what does target offer that walmart doesn't or vice-versa.
And the average person doesn't use IRC, but the average person has heard the term BBB before.
So name recognition in combination with a actual website you can access in a heartbeat is what I offer.
Plus a rating system, comments, etc. Plus we can actually dig a little if we want where a irc bot cannot.
If you understand how the better business bureau works,
then you will be able to understand how this works.

Its a great way to build a longstanding reputation.

Ill get on the txt color jeez i didnt know everyone was so spoiled, look at mtgox for gods sakes lol.
Looks like a computer lab project and they do all sorts of business.

You'd do well to use https or some other encryption setup so that usernames and passwords don't fly cleartext through the web.

Association with the BBB is bad imo.   It is a shit business that it only takes a payment to take care of a bad name on their web sites.  I have worked for two companies that regularly pay out a fee to keep the look of their BBB page clean.

Public still trusts them, so whatever, just thought there could be a better or more original to Bitcoin name for this time of system.

Your lack of market research is not a valid excuse to dismiss established and free competing services. Heatware has been around for over a decade, there is also resellerratings.com which has also been around for more than a decade. Remember YOU are the unknown here and have to be the more compelling solution and sorry a domain name is not enough specially when people have to put money up front.

By advertizing you mean spamming 4 different subforums from the same board like you just did?

I think an even better question is what credentials do you have that guarantees you won't take people's money and run. Heatware and Resellerratings are trusted and recognized because they gave people that guarantee by not asking any money up front to make use of their services.
Heck, this thread in the forums already offers a better value than your website and it's also free: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=484.0

This community is not for the average person. I would argue most people familiar with bitcoins do know and have used IRC. This again reflects your poor or lack of market research because you are not familiar with your market's demographics.

Not enough when competing services with an established history offer the same for free. I think a revision of your business model is in order to be truly compelling. If you had started by being donation based and later on offered value add services for a fee you would gain more traction, but feel free to disregard my criticism since that's your prerogative.

Already offered by resellerratings and heatware as well. Again, you are the unknown trying to break ground here, is there any more substance to this other than a domain name?

Do you? The BBB does not require consumers to pay when filing a complaint.

Coolhwip, angry but not a troll.  Well said things in your post, this is my favorite part.  I think a lot of the Bitcoin start ups have an old school mentality of making things as dumbed down for the consumer as possible, where I would make a strong case that the average Bitcoin user, at least in this stage, knows what the fuck is up, and is looking for the best and most trustworthy services available.

Something like a BBB type service makes sense, but yeah, this thread should help people know to not make it just like the BBB.

You have 14 posts,
Look through my posts and tell me if im trustworthy with bitcoins or not.
Secondly, no wonder I havent heard of those companies, they have nothing to do with bitcoin lol, what are you talking about...
Also, I have been generally patient with the small mindedness, but that has to stop some time.
ATM, the bitcoin community is nerdy yes, In the future I hope not.
Business model??? The .info site cost me .99 cents
Bottom line is you guys are tripping, you dont have to use it if you dont want too.
The funniest part is I understand the demographics just fine. I am preparing for the future.
Market research isnt really an issue because I have absolutely nothing riding on this lol.

To previous post, I added rsa encryption of forms/passwords for now, ill buy ssl later.
You can also log in with open id now.*

If I allow complaints to be filed for free dont you think people will abuse that a little at this point???

Yes by advertising I mean posting in forums when you create something, are you serious?

I do appreciate feedback, but it should be in a relevant tone. I dont intend fo r this to be entirely a clone of the BBB. I mean I just made the site right now. It will develop and we will implement new things. I hope it turns out to be something useful to all of you at some point.

I just want to say that I invented this name: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=8927.0

Although, it's obvious enough that the OP likely did not steal it.  Just sayin.

Even if BBB is flawed, I applaud the initiative.  We need more infrastructure to support bitcoin-commerce.

Crazy... I really have never seen that thread. Its my buddy who came up with it for me, he worked for the BBB and told me he liked the idea for bitcoin. So I got the domains and threw it together. Hope you didnt have a project like this going.
Thanks for the kind words guys.

I think this type of service would be useful, even if there are other alternatives.  As bitcoin community becomes more and more diverse, not just tech-oriented, a registry like that would be helpful.

Interesting. Does it have a way for businesses to respond on the positive or negative experience? Also the BBB actually takes steps to verify that the complaints are real, what verification does your site go through to prevent false complaints.

I think you have a great idea but I would hate to see it go towards where some of the business registries are at currently where it is basically blackmailing business to buy a listing so they can respond to often false and malicious complaints.

A merchant's reputation is everything to them. It the site helps maintain an honest merchants reputation, and expose dishonest merchants you will have a successful business model. Part of what merchants would also pay for to have a membership is to be rated or be able to use your seal on their site.

Good luck with your site. I'll probably be contacting you next week when we launch.

Wondering if there is any interest in this project.
I wish it would of caught on more because we would have a more clear log of the experiences people have had.
Im going to be messing with it a little, so if you check it out and something doesnt work right its just me fiddling.
I am re-implementing openid.

The idea is good, of course.

I would suggest that design should be more like those SSL sites, with like a shield or something, which can be placed on people's site?

Is this a bug?

While I applaud you for trying to help innovate the community, I will say right now there's quite a few other sites doing things similar to your site.  my site btcmerchants.com contains merchant reviews, comments, and detailed listings of businesses accepting bitcoin, but keep at it and I'm looking forward to see the site evolve!

Here's some criticism (I hope constructive :) )

* Why do you have both Name and Username? I've entered exactly the same into both, so why not merge them?

* Why do I have to supply my name and email when posting an experience if I am already logged in?

* Also, the whole process of submitting experiences is wrong in my opinion. You should look into sites that already do such things as customer feedback and take ideas from them.

In my opinion, people should just be able to post negative or positive comments about a service and a rating...

Oh yeah, and you definitely should change the font in your logo.

The "funny" font is probably not a very good choice for a trust bureau :)

Lol
I made this in june overnight.

The reason the login has problems on some screens is because there is open id as an option.
I should eliminate everyother option and it would be cleaner.
Those bugs dont happen on my comp though.

Thanks for the suggestion. Im not trying to be a bureau of much, just a place where you can log in seo friendly manner your experience.

In my opinion, people should just be able to post negative or positive comments about a service and a rating...

Thats what you can do...
