Title: If Bitcoin dies... what could I do with 50 GPUs?
Post by: donjonson on June 16, 2013, 02:12:56 PM
Let's say Bitcoin (and all alts) goes to zero because Nakamoto was wrong :). What could I do with 50 GPUs besides selling them, have fun with my kids (and the whole school) or replace my home heater with them?

Any ideas that have been implemented? Like starting a "gaming center" or process proteins...

Crack some WPA passwords...  Mine litecoin...  sell them on eBay.  Let them age in your closet until you dispose of them.

Erm, I think ASICs are going to make your GPUs worthless before something happens to Bitcoin.

You can use them for Folding@Home - protein simulation to try and find cures for diseases.

But if I were you I'd sell the cards, all of them except for maybe 2 or three to have an awesome gaming machine with.

Sell them quick enough before the market is flooded with newer and better GPUS that ultimately put yours into no purpose

My estimated time of Bitcoins dieing (lets say?) the year: 2020. Don't ask why I think the year 2020. I'm just speculating.
(I hope that doesn't happen) but your GPUS will be no good in 2020.

GPU are also useful for 3D visualization in real-time, for example Lumion or the Unreal Development Kit. My advice would be to contact some high end architecture firms and tell them you have a load of GPU they could use/rent/buy. They could use them to present real-time presentations to clients. It is not just architecture, medicine, engineering all have potential uses for large amounts of raw computing power. With the amount of GPU you have you could rent to lots of different firms at once. If you were to set up a professional looking website I expect you could attract some top end clients, just make sure you clearly demonstrate the advantages of real time rendering and I bet this would be a good niche. The more I think about this the more I think I should have kept this idea secret lol.

Potential Youtube Research...

Lumion
UDK Architecture

You might want to try your hand at cracking hashes for Bitcoin over at HashBounty (http://www.hashbounty.net/bounties (http://www.hashbounty.net/bounties)) using ocl-Hachcat plus (http://hashcat.net/oclhashcat-plus/ (http://hashcat.net/oclhashcat-plus/)).

If you use something like VirtualCL (http://www.mosix.org/txt_vcl.html (http://www.mosix.org/txt_vcl.html)), you could distribute the work to multiple computers, allowing you to fully utilize all of your GPUs.

Couldnt you use them as servers for gamers etc..  or get with a server based company maybe they could help you out.  set them up as game servers to host online games or something like that im guessing what else could you do keep mining.  Web servers or game servers maybe thats still a lot of power that can be used why throw them out but a big waste of energy.  Still think they might be useful though.  Can upgrade mobo and still use them somehow or sell them on ebay easiest thing to liquidate without future headaches.

Point the cards to the MilkyWay@HOME project, or one of the other BOINC projects that support GPU. They often require double bit precision cards though. To find out if your card supports double bit precision or just single bit, refer to the ATI/AMD GPU list on wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

Of course though its donating cycles, electricity and operating costs to charity and for science, so you won't see any money from it. Sometimes there are prizes for competitions on some projects but to my knowledge none of them provide reimbursement for the work done (at least none that would approach break-even).

That's what *I'd* do, anyway.
