Title: My first three days in day trading.
Post by: dumplingsandsushi on November 09, 2017, 05:30:46 AM
So after doing a TON of research I rearranged my schedule and decided to try my hand at day trading.

I decided to start off really small, so I only put in .02 BTC to see where I can go with it.
I've been using only cryptopia.

After three days...I'm up to .0338711 BTC! Wao! I'm a rich man! lol...

I was pleasantly surprised that a simple strategy brought steady gains.
I spent a lot of time trying to figure out indicators of coins that were about to be pumped.  I looked at trade volume, spikes in value, market cap, buy/sell order history, etc.
I am going about this very cautiously, so when I felt like a coin was about to or in the beginning to middle stages of being pumped, I would buy it, and right away put in a sell order that was slightly higher for a small gain.  I tried my best to not put in too much and resell for a lot higher and the result was steady (but tiny gains).  As I get comfortable with this I will probably try larger investments.

I know I'm very amateurish but it feels good to get better at something yeah?

Anyone had similar experiences in day trading?

I'm in a very similar boat!

I have been researching a ton, setting aside a decent amount of time and trying to make slow but steady improvements. The game itself is fun, but can definitely be risky. The biggest lessons I've learned in the short period i've been involved is patience is key and your emotions are your worst indicator.

Happy to hear you've made some profit! Keep it up.

Contratulations!  But you should always keep your mind sober and understand that there is a high chance that you just was lucky enough to get this profit (sometimes you can spend days analyzing charts and get losses). Anyway the starting period is the hardest for many people simply because you should look through tons of new information.

Its good if you are doing it positively. My experience of trading is worst. My portfolio is green because of hike in BTC value. All I can say is HODL os better than trading in my opinion.

I am by far an experienced trader, but i have been around from june and crypto is one hell of a rollercoaster. Due to the fact that this is still pretty early to jump the boat you have to realise that 20up mean one day 20 down, you will see your portfolio decrease half over night. Don’t be greedy either, i did not participate in the free money 2X bs and am happy about that now. Don’t follow the herd, they will try to push you in a direction. A lot of paid shills everywhere, look at the beeeconIIIIIIIII joke (bitconnect). Green (often) meens don’t buy cause you are to late. I have done a ton of research too and am happy to see most of my coins in the top pumped coins today. That has got to mean something.

My strategy is to have 30 procent btc, the rest in alts. This has proven me to be very good because my complete portfolio has never been below its initial investment. I just don’t dare touching the steady coins. I pick a small percentage to put in some pump coin and put a sell order. This way i sold my pot coin at 0,2btc and bought VTC the day before yesterday. We all know how that went :-)

WOW you have done really well. I wish I was a good day trader but am pretty crap at it. I do like to arbitrage trade my favorite coins though when I get a chance so try to increase my little stashes that way if I can, but I don't always get the time of possibility. If you keep going like this you will end up really wealthy one day.  :). Keep this thread alive as I want to see where you are at a year from now.

Well congrats to you mate :) I've been trying to figure out how trading works and did such tons of researchs too. But I don't have much funds and I am feared to lose my money. Guess i have to gain courage for the risk

And don't forget that even if you have a losing position, you still "win" because you will have learnt what not to do and how to improve your trading model! :)

Also remember that your trading model will break eventually, so you should have proper risk management in place so you can survive bad trades and protect your capital to fight another day.

Patience is the key and don't just automatically scale up because you won a few trades already. Sooner or later you are going to lose a trade and it is better to keep it small so you do not get discouraged when the times comes. After a month or two of trading you will be in a better position to scale up your trades some more. I know it doesn't sound as exciting, but slow and steady wins the race here.

Unluckily we do not have similar way in trading because it takes a month before I resell it. You have a good strategy and techniques, it is really hard for me to predict when will the token is going to pump.

Trading is very complicated and stressful job especially for new guy. You can earn some money today, lose tomorrow and so on. The main complexity is to stay calm while trading. I dont like trading and trying to earn money with another kind of job.

So you mean it's like gambling or so? Even in gamble it requires exceptional skills to get above average profit. Trading is also like get a lot of profit today then you're not always getting profit, right? So, basically you do it with luck.

Just got in the right time. No one can not fail to appreciate your efforts and reasonable steps, but the coincidence of the circumstances gave such a result, because agree that in a day you can lose the same amount or more, despite the measures taken.

Luck can come your way few times but not all times.
There are some coins that are volatile. find those coins and do this.
If will be safe dude.
Otherwise you will burn all the money.

Find coins that are resting in good support and going sideways.
It is safe.
just an idea.

be sure to take profits. It so coincided that now most of the coins are at the bottom. Given the latest news about bitcoin, yesterday there was a great opportunity to buy strong altcoyins, On the weekend, I think there will be a small pullback on them. In general, the market comes to life

This is good for practice purposes, but i recomend delving further to better strategies like dip buying scalping and swing trading low caps. Day trading is not as profitable for alt markets and it is for forex or stocks. This is a different Beast, unless your doing this on BTC and even bTC have quiet days, or choopy ones where you could lose all your previus gains quickly. Stoch RSI is a good momentum indicator and easy to understand. Also look for FIbonacci Retracements , and the Basics of Support and Resistance levels, and Trendlines. With all of this you will have a better guess of where you at  and make your own charts!

Definitely! If you lose, you will learn more in what aspect you need to develop but congrats to OP for gaining some profit in his first three days of trading. Just always remember to not be greedy and have a trading plan because if you really want to be profitable on the long run then you need to learn to be consistent. If you don't have a plan, there is a tendency for you to be persuaded by your emotions. Just aim for realistic profits because you may be lucky to profit 50% in a day but there is a possibility you will lose it the next day. Consistency is the key. There are some day traders that I know only aim for 1% a day.

You're just lucky man not all the day traders are having the same fate as yours, keep up the good job and keep on learning while you are the top of your day trading experience. But don't get high much so that you won't be hurt when something goes wrong with your trades. Just remember that don't be too greedy so that you can take profits properly. Your gain is totally impressive just for an amateur.

Anyone had similar experiences in day trading?

I never did have an experience like that for having that gain when I was quite new to day trading.

Congratulations on doing well so far. One thing to be aware of is that it is easy to keep your emotions out of it when you are dealing only with small amounts. The more you scale up, the more your emotions come into play. If you bet 0.01 BTC on a trade and  you start to lose it is easy to wait until it turns into a gain... but not so easy if you are betting 10 btc and it starts to dip... the fear and panic is so much greater and you will want to limit your losses rather than ride it out, so just be aware of that effect.

I think it will be harder to make some bad decisions in the short term future because everything will grow now. It's just a matter of how much it will grow, and not necessarily if it will grow (if we're talking about respected projects).
It's certainly not easy when you'll see 50-90% drops in your portfolio, that is the time you need to prepare for.

Nevertheless, well done on your first 3 days!

Don't want to burst your bubble, but the last days have been bullish overal (the markets has been going up). Anyone made money during these days/weeks and you getting to 0.3 BTC is nothing extraordinary. If you managed to make the same money in a bear market, I would salute you, but the fact that you made that gain during a bull market doesn't mean much. My personal advice would be to put about 2 to 4% of your portfolio on each trading position. That way you'll have much more chances to mess up, and eventually if your strategy does prove to be good, you will make in the long term more money than you will lose. Don't want to discourage you as already mentioned, but I'm curious how you will perform when the entire market see's a bloody day.

That's an wrong understanding, trading has got complications. But, the end result depends upon the skills of the user as well the willingness to take risk. I personally believe, profiting through day trading or trading is possible when you have the patience to earn. Invest today and get the fruit out of it won't happy in a short however professional the user might be.

So a quick update, I placed a sell order before I went to sleep and woke up to find that the order was filled and the coin I was trading hiked up in price overnight then in the morning was starting to slow down.  There was TONS of activity, like double what I saw during the day so it started to make me wonder if the most active traders on Cryptopia are in Asia (because my time zone is Mountain Time Zone).

I can't speak for other exchanges, but on cryptopia I first look at the trade volume and see one that has had a sudden spike in trade activity.  Then I look at the percent increase in value, 30% - 50%, seemed like a good sign it is being pumped.  Next, I look at the trade history for when was the last upswing and if the current upswing is exponential or not.  The last thin I look at is the buy/sell list and how many coins are being sold for what price.  If all seems to be good I will buy then immediately list for a smaller profit.  A couple times I bought out all the lower priced coins if there were a couple listed at a low price that were selling only a couple coins.  I did have some coins that ended up being losses but overall it is still turning out as profit.

I'm really trying my best to stay patient and steady.  Even if I start getting more BTC to trade with, I am sticking to making small .01 to .02 purchases cause that is what seems to have worked the last couple days.

I hadn't considered that now alts are almost all rising quickly, so I am trying to monitor the market to see when this bull run slows down and try to adjust based on that.  When it starts to slow down, it looks like I won't be able to make multiple buy/sell orders throughout the day as easily.

it is nice to see this method of trading is catching on.
this is what i have been using for a while too. and actually  the firs time i heard about it on this forum and i tried it out and it has worked so far for me.
however it is worth mentioning that this is a riskier strategy for trading but if you get the hang of it, you can make a much better profit than any other altcoin investment strategy that you have now.

i say you are on the right path and good job on starting small. you will be a lot more successful this way because with small amount you don't fear that much about losing and instead you learn a lot.

I know I'm very amateurish but it feels good to get better at something yeah?

Anyone had similar experiences in day trading?

We`d rather list trading selection criterias and tips..

Although day trading is great but I would suggest that you learn technical analysis if you want to get into it. Else the best strategy is to buy and hold coins for long term. People who buy and hold for long term make more money unless you are a whale who is influencing the markets day trading.

You are one of the good traders in the future. Thanks for your experience and share it to us and I consider this as more effective when dealing with small amount of Bitcoin. Although trading is like gambling but your profit would be close as for the winning.

There is nothing more satisfying than spending time doing your own research and then getting good profit back. It is not such a huge gain but it's a start and of course a good one. When i heard for the first time about cryptos it was 2 years ago from a dear friend. I spent more than 6 month looking at his move and studying the market. I also started whit a small amount of BTC and I've learnt many lessons: the best one is to take a position and go all the way in it

more 60% in 3days, nice, but don't take too much trust because down are often more fast than increase
also don't keep all your budget in one only coin

well simple is perfect i do a lot of research too before i started trading coins but in my experience the more indicators you put in your mind the more problems you will face before trading, because in cryptocurrency trading funda is more imporatant other than any trading currency.

That's good for you. Ive try putting small amount and go trading how many times but always ended cutting losses and selling the alt I bought in lower price due to scare of having nothing left at end. I also make lots of research how to be successful trader but I cant still catch on it.

Cool. Congrats to you if can really stay rational and not greedy i guess you can make some good money.
I however did not that good experience with day trading.
I looked all day the prices up and thought about it. Sometimes I did good gains, but at some days to sell at the high and made loses.
I stopped it with with a slight minus.
Know I am just investing long term. It is much easier and less risky i think.

In day trading correct timing and patience are most important. Like currently it is a good time to trade in Altcoins, as lose chances are less, for example investing in Eth at $280 is better than investing when it is about $400. Good luck

Congratulations. I have to say that you did good on your first 3 days of trading. Not all that tried trading is as fortunate as you. I think that's what they call beginners luck. Just keep what you are doing until you get comfortable and until you master the techniques in trading. Don't be greedy and stick to what you've been doing so far. Goodluck mate.  ;D

That's good for you. Trading is one good way of earning bitcoin. A lot of people are earning bitcoin through trading altcoins. It is profitable, you just need to find cheap coins with good potential. However, you should be careful because there's a lot of shitcoins that are not worth investing.

Great post as it's an interesting read, people always like to hear of others experiences. The key is to have your strategy and stick to them, we can all get a little excited, a little greedy but that's usually when we crash and burn. Just remember at the end of the day, profit is profit! It would be good to see you keep updating this thread, maybe like a weekly update or something!

I joined a free trading signal group on Telegram. To test the water, I only practiced paper trading based on their BUY/SELL signal. It has been profitable on paper, I am thinking to do actual trading, but I am still worried. I know for a fact that people lose more than profiting with Day trading.  It's tempting but I am resisting and holding on my bags.

You were just lucky, you know that bitcoin fork was cancelled and basically all alts had huge gainz after the fork, because people jump back to alts? If you can keep this up for a month, you will be wealthy, but I am just calling it a luck.

Title: Re: My first three days in day trading.

Have you ever considered that you were able to make these gains because segwit was cancelled and people are bringing money back into alts?

While I am really happy for your success I think you will start to find it difficult to maintain those gains.
Already, a lot of alts are starting to slow down.  On top of that doesn't Cryptopia mostly offer shitcoins?
Unless you are careful with how much you put in you could easily end up with a bag full of nothing.

If I were you, I would take this into consideration and adjust your investing accordingly.
Maybe take just 10 to 20% of what you earned to invest and the rest put into a long term hold so if you lose you won't lose everything.

Its important to know when to stop when day trading. Closing a trade with a profit brings with it its own emotions, one of which is euphoria. Whilst its not abnormal to feel euphoric about closing a day profitably, if not careful it can also validate a bad trading strategy i.e. if you close in a bull market when all alts are up; where your alt is up by virtue of a lot of buying in the market generally. Always keep an eye on indicators and volume!

Have not day traded, but great job! Be ready to lose some as well, but don't let it get you down. Keep at it, and at times put some of the profits aside just incase everything goes sour one trade.

Another Update:

Well, after a streak of ups and then a bunch of ups and downs I decided to stop at neblio.
After 4 1/2 days of day trading I went from .02btc to .03701445btc. That final bit I put into neblio and now I'm just going to hold.
It was an insane rush the first couple days I made steady gains.
But after some input that it was most likely a combination of luck and the current uptick in tons of alts, i tried to be more cautious.
Today was a huge stressful nerve wreck haha, so I decided to take a break and just watch the market for awhile.
I consider myself very fortunate to get this far and learned a lot.

For those that are interested, here are the coins I went through, it was pretty insane.
I hope you don't see it as shilling because it most definitely is not, a lot of these are already falling now.

cloakcoin
neo
safex
smartcash
mothership (lost a little)
hshare
open trade network (made huge gains on this one)
B3 coin (another one with huge gains)
dubaicoin
alis (lost a bunch)
innova (lost a little)
ormeus coin
bitcoin cash
and finally neblio just now.

...yeah, my brain is fried.

Been there first day of trading was really frustrating for me , I was in the middle of bitcoin and ETH rally , I was so greedy that I was expecting for 50% gain. I was just watching the price being pump for about 40% then suddenly in a blink of an eye Bitcoin dump lightning fast. I was new back then so I was not expecting for a sudden drop like that. Same goes to ETH, That's why I hate to do day trade I need to be watching it 24/7 to profit.

Actually, that's better than day-trading. Putting your coins in sell orders doesn't necessarily mean that you are doing a daytrading, especially that you are setting an specific price for your coins being put in sell order. That's not a long term investment, but I don't also consider that as daytrading. You're actually waiting for days or weeks (like in your case, you were able to sold the coins after 3 days) before you were able to sell it in a specific price.

Three days you passed very good time with trading. But trading is actually not easy it's very difficult.Need more analysis it's very lengthy process.Because it's not possible to do something good at a very short time.

Our STOCK, who art on the support, jump be thy name. Thy bounce begin as it is in heaven. Give us a breakout triangle, our daily bread. Forgive us our losses, as we have as we have also taken other peoples losses. And do not bring a red day for us, but rescue us from evil.

I have been doing that too. The first time I found about this is when I saw a coin quickly rising up in seconds so I thought Id buy some, in a minutes time, it suddenly stopped and the sell orders were on hold. That's when I though Id sell my coins in the highest buy order(which is may more than my bought price). But I noticed that if you go on small start-up you'll end up losing your bitcoin just by the fees, so if you really wan to earn though this, bigger amount would be better.

I think your future will be good. But be careful because not every day is such because Not but but we can not avoid it. So when that point comes, you will stop your emotions because that will bring you to the Loser. Always keep in mind that Do not sell a loser in price because you're more likely to break your portfolio.

For 90% of us, the best long-term strategy is to buy and hold. Great to hear you've made some profit, but this time you were lucky.
You can say you're a trader if you don't loose more than 10% of deposit in BTC (not USD) after a year of trading. But one trade is just like a toss of coin.

Congratulation.. I also use this strategy for trading time. Start with low balance make a money management system. Start Market analysis, Research about coins which is chosen by me.  I also looked at trade volume, spikes in value, market cap, buy/sell order history, etc. But Every time is not working of this strategy. When my luck don't favor to me. It's really feel bad. So I always active my money management system to recover my loss.

Very tempting to jump into trading when getting started.. but I'd like to suggest that you put some aside and LT HODL something legit like BTC (in fact.. I'd definitely suggest BTC) for a year or more and compare % gains at the end. It may well end up being more profitable for you to sit on your hands, but it's easy to fool yourself into thinking relatively small profits are the way to go... and in crypto 'small' profits can be 100%.

I completely agree with you dude. Personally, I feel that HODLING the coins for long term profits is the way to go. HODLING returned positive results majority of the time and I have earned good profits this way after trading in the crypto market for sometime. I have dabbled with daytrading and I lost money quickly due to my limited knowledge of the day trading market. I have no knowledge of stock or forex trading which was one of my biggest disadvantages while entering the crypto market.

But the moment i got hold of myself and knows what works as against what doesn't, profit started rolling in. I think you are on the right course!

If there is a posivite and upward trend, this will make you rich when you hold. If the trend is negative and bearish, this will make you lose hard. These are the fundamentals.

And crypto world is now under upward trend generally.

This is a very warming post. While others are whining and complaining and even planning to go away from trading, here you are sharing some good experiences about trading. I have not gone through such a very smooth and gaining trading when I started it but I still stuck to it and gained some significant profit later on. I think you continue with mostly small amounts and then try some 1 or 2 coins which you are trusting very much with a big amount.

It seems like you have made your job of a day trader very well and now you can enjoy your profit (0,01 BTC is not a negligible amount, for me at least) or reinvest (I think you are going this way). You have not made any major mistake so far and you were rewarded, but pay attention as things can turn around just in the moment when you expect it the least. Anyway, I wish you luck in your upcoming challenges in a life of a trader so we would be able to read your next successful story  ;).

As i know cryptopia exchange does not have stop limit feature that important to use in trading for stop loss, and in that times all crypto in bull run so is more easy to make profit. And when bearish trend started on january till now , i think more than 60% of crypto trader in loss. Crypto has high volatility so we should be cut loss whenever the prediction wrong to minimize loss.

Maybe you do have talent in daily trading, but I think the one that makes you successful, is that you are at the moment all the coins are experiencing very good growth. But you can do it at any time, because fluctuations are available for games like that, it's just that the risk level will be different now.

Op has made a clear decision and has done a lot of analysis prior to the active participation into day trading activities. From my understanding when one has learned to make use of the small price variation within the buying and selling point surely he'll earn good as well it shows the way the market needs to be viewed than just having a wild predictions.

If you are very comfortable with your style of trading things will be more brighter for your future, as you are very keen to monitor movements around the exchange, and you also have a lots of exchange to check out, Binance is one of those that you can also try your skills since you mention that you will going to invest more, so you also need to check whether other exchange will bring you same confidence that you've got from cryptopia, good luck to you.

Trading is always risky due to huge volatility here and all indicators fail when any big news hit the market. If the positive news comes then you cannot catch it and if it comes against the trend then no one wants to buy in a sudden drop. Holding and patience is the best strategy here as per my opinion.

I have worse three days in trading, if I am not mistaken, I have lost everything that I have invested in and it was so worreing for me and for my family as well. I hope that I will not make similar mistakes later because they are too obvious to be done.

In the early days of trading on the crypto stock exchange, I was lucky, because the market was going up. And if I did nothing in the trade, I would get more profit.

The hours of patience have actually been paid off. See? If you rushed out and sold your bitcoin, you would not get this profit. Trading requires patience and positive thinking. Without them both, you will be at a total loss. I am very happy for you, I hope you will stick for that strategy and never ever lose faith in the coin you invested in. And I hope these people learn to be patient because patience is the key to success nothing less nothing more.

I think you have a pretty good level of analysis even though you are still in the beginner class at that time. It becomes a good start that will foster enthusiasm to work even harder by reaching out to something wider. The crypto situation seems to have compared 180 degrees from the initial trade you did. Currently, it is more difficult to trade and produce good results. Because crypto is very easy to change and the current number is very bad. It is necessary to increase the level of analysis as well because it is now rife with coins that scams are everywhere.

Trading is not as easy as people this it is. If care is not taken one can loss all his life savings to one trading.

I think you have chosen the right strategy, especially in the current market you will be able to earn a lot. The main thing is not to be greedy, it can lead to losses.

Don't think about the small profits. You really did great as you were not experienced and yet managed to get a good profit of approx 0.0128711 BTC. That is really great. Most of the time i try day-trading, i faces loss and hence i leave day trading. Trading for long terms have been profitable for me but not day trading. Perhaps I can't understand the dips much properly and hence have loss in it.

I had same problems as the majority if people here have as well. I have spent too much money that day but I don't regret now because I have learnt how to do it.

should always keep your mind sober and understand that there is a high chance that you just was lucky enough to get this profit sometimes you can spend days analyzing charts the starting period is the hardest for many people simply because you should look through tons of new information....

It seems that the time of HODL and investing in new projects in cryptocurrency is coming to its logical conclusion. You will either have to study trading or leave the cryptocurrency market

In the early days of my trading, i made a small profit from my investment, but maybe it was due to luck because at that time i am very panic, confused and there was no knowledge about the trading.
I also found that the day trading is very risky but also full of money, and also found that crypto currency trading requires a lots of funds, strategy, patience and most important knowledge about crypto currencies because the crypto market is very volatile nature.
Then i decided to learn it and now after learning and controlling all these things, i have come again for business and now it is making good profit.

swing trading is really nice. because swing traders use technical analysis to look for low prices and sell at a higher price.. i tried this with BTK and made a good profit out of it

my 1st day in trading is not that cool, i invested in the coin like a cheap one and then the coin keeps on selling high and i did sell my coin for me to gain profit but suddenly my sell order didnt hit, i dont know the reason why or maybe some buyer  dont want to buy more coins, so i wait a little longer and then i cancel it and sell again my coins at the same price i bought but i lose some sat due to interest of the market exchange.  ;D

Agree with you, the most feared in trading cryptocurency is "greedy"
There is no senior in the cryptocurrency trade, because the market is always changing and cannot be guessed.

see from the first time you trade it was a good start because not everyone succeeded in trading  first failure due to lack of strategy and lack of trading knowledge. I myself always failed in my first trading because I was lazy to learn good trading methods

Yes, during the period of global growth, we can say that any project that previously had at least some fame had chances to be pumped up with money, but what to do now? It seems to me that now it is getting harder at times.

Greed should not be a thing when you are not ignorant of what you are doing. The craziest aspect of trading in general is to trade without knowledge, strategy and plan. The OP apparently had his first three days in trading well for him because he was able to follow a plan which we know a lot of people cannot have because they simply are so reluctant to learning.

Nevertheless, I would have loved to see how the OP was able to manage the bear trend, since when he posted this was the period of the bulls in the market, so it was easy to trade and make something substantial during that period.

Well greed has already turned good profits to heavy losses a lot of times in the past. You should have the presence of mind to know that you've made enough profit. These are lessons that are taught over and over again with trading in crypto.

I agree with you. Greed has ruined many. One of the rules that should be followed when trading, this is how much you have not earned, you should leave 10 percent of the profits.

I think it's less time if it's only 3 days. we should be able to analyze a coin in the market, whether it has a good development and is long enough or not, because if we are wrong it will suffer a lot of losses.

That has always been an advantage of having a strategy if you want to trade, and you certainly cannot have a strategy if you do not learn the basic things you need to know when it comes to trading, using indicators and analyzing the market.

One thing a lot of people always find very hard to achieve because they are too lazy to learn. With that kind of attitude, he will always be able to build confidence around his strategy and make better decisions for himself in the long run.

It depends a lot on which market you are trading. Different  market conditions require different strategies.
I was practicing also with small amounts at the start but took me long to figure out how to trade profitably
long term and still learning. Would be nice to hear what are your impressions after a year ....

with daily baiting unnecessary time is almost none, Because it is always possible to control the market. But this is only when you are working under the influence of excitement.
