Title: Better Heatsink for your USB Block Erupters
Post by: Bitcoinbernd on June 19, 2013, 12:58:20 PM
Hi everybody :)

I would like to show you a way how to provide better passive cooling for your USB Block Erupters. This might extend the life expectancy of your sticks (I hope!).

  • Step 1: Unscrew the original cooler.
    http://abload.de/thumb/img_08164mkyx.jpg (http://abload.de/image.php?img=img_08164mkyx.jpg)

  • Step 2: Eiter place the original thermal pad, or order the Phobya thermal-pad (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0051C2L1S/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1638&creative=19454&creativeASIN=B0051C2L1S&linkCode=as2&tag=blovonpetpik-21) for thermal transfer between the board and your passive cooler. (One Phobyastripe is enough for three Block Erupters)
    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21iR1997geL._SX342_.jpg (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0051C2L1S/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1638&creative=19454&creativeASIN=B0051C2L1S&linkCode=as2&tag=blovonpetpik-21)

  • Step 3: Using cable ties mount your northbridge passive cooler onto your Block Erupter.
    http://abload.de/thumb/img_0817p5jic.jpg (http://abload.de/image.php?img=img_0817p5jic.jpg) http://abload.de/thumb/img_0819c8k9e.jpg (http://abload.de/image.php?img=img_0819c8k9e.jpg)

  • Step 4: Optionaly attach one of the Raspberry-Pi-Heatsinks (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B009A8ATOK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1638&creative=19454&creativeASIN=B009A8ATOK&linkCode=as2&tag=blovonpetpik-21) directly onto the ASIC on the other side of the board
    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21HDyxbV8NL.jpg (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B009A8ATOK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1638&creative=19454&creativeASIN=B009A8ATOK&linkCode=as2&tag=blovonpetpik-21)
(Im sorry I cannot provide a picture for this. Im still waiting for delivery of these...)

Have fun. :)

That heatsink is HUGE.

That heatsink is HUGE.

I got three USB Block Erupters. And the cooler on the picture above is the smallest of all three. ;) Here are the other ones:

You seems to paint the lily.
The oringe heatsink is enough.
你的做法是画蛇添足。

My USB fan is doing a great job keeping mine cool.  That heatsink is cool, but probably overkill.  Not to mention, I wouldn't be able to still fit them in my hub next to each other.  ;)

Look for GPU memory heatsinks, the individual ones. They'd be perfect size.

Those sinks will not fit in 10+ hubs, like Anker.  Just blow air at it, they are cool to touch.

Hahaha, fabulous, qwk! :D
Is the entire heatsink getting hot or at least warm? :)

Try removing the original heatsink and attach the Erupter along with its original thermal-pad on your heatsink. Dont worry, its not sticky or anything. :)

HAHA omg. A heatsink designed for 100W of heat, and it's dissipating 3W? 2.5W?

7W/mK? If you were serious about cooling your miner, you'd get the best thermal pads money can buy:  Fujipoly 17W/mK (http://www.frozencpu.com/products/17499/thr-181/Fujipoly_Ultra_Extreme_System_Builder_Thermal_Pad_-_60_x_50_x_05_-_Thermal_Conductivity_170_WmK.html).

Luke warm to the touch. I get a reading of up to 30 C˚ on my thermometer.
Hottest spot on the Asic is about 51 C˚.

I'll see  ;D

Alright, now I am REALLY interested in the values after you remove the original heatsink! :)

Did some experiments with forced air cooling of my USB Erupter.
See attached plot, what a little USB powered fan can do:

Taped a tiny Pt100 sensor to the heatsink and recorded
the temperature over time. When the temperature was at it's
max, a fan was pointed at it. You can see nicely the huge
effect a simple fan has.

Used this fan:

OMG, more than 70 C˚! Probably because i don't have anything to push the asic down onto my heatsink, it's just lying on top with maybe a tiny layer of air separating it from the sink. Guess I'll have to find some huge oversized clamps somewhere.

holds head in shame at some attempts at cooling....... what you need liquid cooling if i had the money to buy them id liquid cool a row of 10 of them just for the hell of it XD

i also accept donations to make 10 USB Block Erupters water cooled all i need are the actual block erupters got the rest of the cooling stuff XD

Yes. Original heatsink plus usb fan is enough.

Greetings.

I have 2 CPU fans blowing directly my 2 USB Gizmos and now they don't go higher than 40ºC. But with a ARCTIC Breeze Mobile (or another equivalent), it will stay fixed to the same HUB you are using for the USB Gizmos.

I already bought this kit @ eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121059845105?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121059845105?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649)

The kit contains:

  • 1 x SoC Heatsink with pre-applied tape (14x14x10mm)
  • 1 x LAN Heatsink (8x8x6mm)
  • 1 x Voltage Regulator Heatsink (8x6x5mm)
  • 1 x Thermal Tape
  • 1 x Installation Guide

As the BE100 ASIC ship is the one who has more thermal emission and measures 6x6mm, the best heatsink of the kit is the Voltage Regulator Heatsink (8x6x5mm). But as the 8x8x5mm LAN heatsink also fits in the space, I'll use it for the ASIC of my second USB Gizmo.

I will glue those heatsinks directly on the ASIC's with the included thermal tape.

Best regards.

Three RAM heatsinks with adhesive tape on the existing heatsink, and one MOS heatsink with adhesive tape on the BE100 chip. Can easily be removed, and are sourced for next to nothing on ebay. Seems to work (they get really hot). I place them in the USB ports of my computers where the exit airflow from the case helps a bit.

So funny story, I've been doing that for about the last 10 months or so with my FPGA Single. Slapped a big old solid copper heatsink on it from an old computer I had lying around that died years ago. This is it without the top fan (I took it off to clean it, as you can see.  :o :o :o ) This let me bumped it up from barely 816 to the 880 firmware, with lower temps.
