Why do you decide to hold your altcoins? Because of your researching about that coin or just because people on this forum said it's potential?
Another reasons?

I try to hold my altcoin because i believe that the developers will be delivered its promise. I try to hold it caused by myself and there is no intervention from another person in my personal thought about that,
But i just hold the promising investment.

I did not choose altcoin but the more investment you risk the more risk of gaining high profit. Altcoins are just like bitcoins on its early stage the difference is that today bitcoin is their mother or the alpha. Altcoins has the probability of doing the same as bitcoin. Early investors of bitcoins gain so much profit for riskibg their money to it. This goes the same in risking my money to altcoins.

I always invest with my own experience and decisions. I read other people's comments to find information I didn't know about the project. Believe in yourself and make decisions, which will help you to have more investment experience later

I am a day trader,short trades for me are more profitable than holding for months.As a trader my main goal is too have as much BTC i can and to do that i need to buy alts using my BTC to trade and after that i will have more BTC than i have before.

GITHUB, for a coin, be sure to go to GITHUB to see its development team upload updated code quantity and quality, if you understand programming.
For example, EOS, its code updates very fast, the frequency is not less than 24 hours, although I do not understand what it wants to express code.

I invest in altcoins because I want to see more returns on my initial investment. I will do my own research though.

for me i look for coin potential i dont listen of what other people say i just do my own research
i always wait for a few thing to happen before buy more of the altcoin at first i just buy few then leave it and see it after a few month
if the coin have some more potential i will start to buy another batch but if not i will just sell it

I choose altcoins for trading and increasing my bitcoins.
My only goal with altcoin is to earn bitcoins by trading them.

Some good points already being posted here. I'd like to add one more.
I am always checking ANN-Thread(s) and how many pages they got in which time. If the thread is 2 months old and has only 20 pages it is most likely not too interesting for many people. After this raw check I am trying to get an idea if the comments are mostly raging or optimistic.

It is a bit like Amazon reviews. A lot of them are fake, but if you see a product with hundreds of positive reviews it will most likely not be a complete fail to buy it.

But of course, this is just an indication to filter out all the less interesting coins and is *not* an inevitable indication to buy them.

based on what i have seen in the past couple of years, most people who hold an altcoin are doing it because they bought it on top of a bubble and now the price has dropped and since they don't want to lose money and have the illusion that price will recover, the keep holding on to their now-worthless tokens. this is where the term "bag-holder" comes from.
the forum hype spam helps in this case to have more bag-holders but eventually they do a panic sell which will crash the price.

the few others are only holding an altcoin because they have bought "at the bottom" not on top of a bubble and now they are waiting for the pump and  the resulting bubble to occur.
the forum hype makes these people to take it as a sign and start dumping. because you always buy when nobody is talking about these things and sell when everyone is over excited.

because i have faith on my coin,and i believe in its developer before i invest onthem i make sure i do lots of research.our coins is our prescious thing here in crypto so before we made a decision on having them we are 100% willing to give our trust coins

I hold on to my altcoins because I believe the coins have potential to grow. I get to know about altcoins through this forum and do my due research before investing.

I choose the coins I have because I have a strong feeling that one day it will goes to the moon. I decided to hold Altcoins because they are more profitable these days compared to Bitcoin due to it's extra high value. Altcoins are cheaper to invest most especially those who are doing trading in some exchanges. I am doing research with the coins of course but sometimes I just chose those in top five or  ten Altcoins on the market for a safer long term investment. I am also looking at the background and the strength of the coins community for better result. The stronger the specific coins community is the more the potential of the coin to grow in the future.

   The reason why I hold some altcoins is "Dont hold all egg in one basket". I dont know the future, have no idea what will fall and what will rise. So the best decision for me is to keep defferent values. I would like to have anything valuable, it makes me feel more confident. I like litecoin for example, because Coinmarketcap receives donations with it

Definitely diversity should be a key consideration. Also, you just need to read about each token\company, see if you think they're technology is legit and if it can grow to be something much bigger one day...

It is part of my investment strategy to diversify my portfolio. And yes, I get to know about altcoins and new projects in Bitcointalk. But I do not rely on the recommendations to decide which coins to invest in. If I find the project interesting, I will definitely research first

I invest in an altcoin because the team who created it has an objective in mind and it is viable. I do read other people's comment about an altcoin because I want to know the coin from their perspective and maybe they have other information that I don't know about. If the coin has a large volume in exchanges then the coin is a plus for me because I can day trade with it so that I can have more of it. If the developers of the coin are active then that would be good because there are other coins in the market that are only for speculation purposes because the developers abandoned the project.

It's from my own researching. I don't believe 99% from people said if a coin has potential (i might be believe 1% only, it's only if the person who said it is really experienced in altcoin).

because in future the only mean transactions will we crypto-currency as you can see the metals replaced by the cash and then cash by the e-currency now the e-currency will be replaced by the it as the people will became more modern. that's why i will prefer to hold them in stead of salling

Because I've seen some alternative coins looks as promising as bitcoin that is why I've decided to also invest in alt coins also there are other features which you can earn on altcoins, as a good investor always he/she not just place his money working for him on one place but also to other place in order for it to grow fast which is the same as investing in cryptocurrencies.

I am pretty sure many many people hold their coins to get more profits.
I am similar, my initial purpose is making money. But I can still hold some coins if I believe for future, and like the coins' roadmap.

It's because something boost my confidence to pour my money for the altcoin, of course it boost by reading the white paper, their plans and uses of the coin, The hype and the Vibe that is created by the team, the flexibility and the unique features of their coins added by the security measures that the altcoin can provide, of course i decided to take the risk because they are one of the top 20 coins in the market there's a reason why they are staying to the top and that is the foundation and authenticity.

I am holding unto my altcoins because of the fact that its developers and contributors promised me of their coins and no one knows what the future holds that is why i am holding and investing my altcoins not for this time but for the future because i believe our future will be ruled by cryptocurrencies and that is not too far to happen

I choose altcoin that has potential and has a higher value than ICO prices, and I also see the roadmap and I see what a good project it is. it's all that I do when choosing an altcoin.

For my portfolio, i try to pick altcoins that have real world use. I don't even touch (not even for quick daytrading) coins that have no value, like XRP - which is a great tech, no doubt about it... But the coin has no value.

It's because I support the idea and I believe it will be successful one day. It makes you proud if the project that you supported will be successful.

Base on my positive perspective about the project,even if peopleare dumping,base on my research on the project,I will be able to see life in it,and also the team behind the project has alot of impact on the coin

I chose to invest in Ethereum in the ICO back in the day because it was something new. Many people of the then small crypto community were saying that it was an opportunity not to be missed and they were right. However, it was a highly speculative investment back in the day but the craze of this year made prices go up a great deal. Not many cryptos will have the luck of repeating that.

Not for potential for me. I only select them for speculative reasons like value increase, and price rallies. I want to multiply my capital by investing and buying in them. I don't care the rest of the idea.

I choose my altcoins because they are profitable for either long term or short term trading because they have a huge volume in the market that is sustaining their price and i think that they have a good potential in the future so i chose them because of the standards that they have reached and until now i am keeping them and not planning to sell them this year.

It is all based in different aspects. The knowledge from this forum also contributes to the decision what coin should I choose. And of course the trend of the price of that altcoin should be majority in green.

I choose to buy some altcoins for two reason mainly. One is the dev team, the team should be experienced and strong. The other is how is going with the ICO progress, sold out in a short time is prefered.

Application prospects can be one of the direction of investment ALTCOIN, the most popular blockchain direction is encrypted - hybrid encryption. So, ALTCOIN I bought from the transaction is almost always of this type.

I'm holding my altcoin both out of my research and that of the buzz about the currency. If I sense that many are dumping it quite easily, this issue may lead me to give up on it as well. If its market trend shows some rising pattern, then i may hold it for a time.

I chose the coin because I believe that later the coin price I choose will have a high price and I am sure of it.

I have some altcoins that I am hodling for long term besides bitcoin. But before I make an investment that is mainly for long term. I make a research about the coin and who are the dev team behind it. If they have a good long term vision then it is a big factor for me. What is their product and how it competes with its rivals within the crypto world and how can it maintain and develop its products in the long run. Do they have any big companies or financial institutions that can vouch them as a worthy investment? There are many factors that are need to consider before investing into any investment tool. I just invest into what I believe that can be usable and can have a place in our society now and in the future.

I do not only keep altcoins in my wallet. I actively trade with them. However, a part of my coins are really stay untouched. I believe that soon they will grow as I stake on Ethererum and DASH mostly.

Altcoins have much better scope to have a rise in their price than bitcoin. I do trust in bitcoin most of the time thats i decided to reduce the amount of trading i do with different coins and stick to few of them only. One such coun is siacoin i buy it at 51 and sell it at 67 sat once in 2-3 weeks really easy 30% profit

I choose altcoins as all together they bring me more profit than Bitcoin alone. Just much time is needed to learn how to trade smart, and I spend many hours to research the market of alts. Additionally some alts are very fast.

Actually many are expecting a return of normal altcoin prices after these months down, possibly a result of the skyrocketing rise in bitcoin prices.
And the altcoin holders believe in the future the coins they hold will have a high value according to price when ico..hope the best and the altcoin we hold is really worth.

Well about chosing your altcoins, people are investing their money on an altcoin and if they invest in the wrong altcoin which is not that good and it's price drops they will lose their money. So people research and find out which altcoin would be the best to invest in and then invest in it. If you won't chose the altcoins and carelessly invest in some coins which don't have potential you will suffer from loss. That would be the only reason i can think of.

My first purchaeses were just because of the speculation and hype actions. I just bought them to earn money and I did this. Then I started to seek for real and developing project coins. Then earning money became harder.

Speaking seriously, it depends. Thre are some ppl who hold to hold, like Satoshi   8) The others do it for different reasos. It's like I dunno, love, friendship and other feelings, there are no common reasons. It just happens  ;D Check the tweets about altcoins to feel me ))

Upon the trading perspective as well upon the possibility to earn good through altcoins preferr the same. With bitcoin profiting is promised, but it is not affordable for all levels of people. To have a diversified portfolio I keep buying and holding altcoins for long term profiting.

A combination of both. First you need to see there is excitement on the coin, then check the dev team and pick something that should economically stand (what is their target market? Will the token/coin be used for something or is it just a currency?) people seem to neglect the last part and just ride on hope

I'm not hold all altcoin. I think, altcoin is different way to investment for short term. At the moment, i was held several altcoin.

Yes. What you just said is just one of the reasons why we are holding coins. We should always do research and make sure that that coin has the potential to grow in the future.

New technology, skilled team, active community etc.

there is nothing wrong when choosing altcoin for my opinion i earn first in altcoin and as of now i am still earning just make sure for the coin that you are trying to choose for what and how will it be benefited for you.

I always invested in Altcoin, only they aroused great interest for me. The BTC has just started flying to the moon. But this flight will soon go down. Keep yourself in hands)

I do hold certain altcoins when I see it has a future or there is development of the project. Usually, I always upto date if there is new about the project and developer is very active. These are the reasons why I do hold and believe worth it.

Since altcoin has produced many coins and today it continues to appear many coins, i think altcoin can have a
a good future, there are altcoins that increases and being known, also these coins are the future of altcoin, the ethereum,dogecoins,neo and many coins but the best in all of those is the ethereum, because eth can put the altcoin in the level of bitcoin thats why altcoin has a good future.

I have 2 ALTs that I like what the developers are doing and I am interested in their vision and where they will take the coin. Particularly if it's aimed at the failings that bitcoin has. I have 2 others that my wife liked the look of as they have pretty logos. Hey ho. All about getting her involved I suppose.

I will choose to include teams, technology, application feasibility, marketing and so on. At the same time, there is a strong community support.

Trust and you will get paid for reading and writing as well.

I like to investing in many altcoins because I think they'll grow in the future.
I read carefully about them before I buy and always try to avoid the sh__coins even if they are gainig 100% every day.
Not all the coins worth buying them, You have to by very careful.

The first I researh the information about a coin myself. After choosinga a potetial coin, I will ask some experts in this forum and my friends. If they say it is ok, I will invest in it.

Personally I analyze what that coin is supposed to back, and if I like the project as a whole (the team, whitepaper, road-map and the number of coins), as this has great impact on the long-term price of the coin.

I visit coinmarketcap, find top gainers and research on them, if is  project with a good track record, I invest in then.

The network effect is extremely important and there are examples were better technologies lost to the competition because of the latter's network effect.

In addition, being the oldest running crypto-currency and with the larger market cap means that it was consistently attacked for years; it is the most battle tested and the safest in terms of technical hacking. It also has the largest processing power which means that a majority attack (51%) is not really feasible, incentive-wise.

Most altcoins (there are ~700 right now) have nothing new to offer. Some, however, do add new features. They have (maybe debatable) technological advantages over Bitcoin:

• Dash and the master-node layer with their innovative governance model
• Ethereum which allows complex smart contracts to be easily created
• Maidsafe, NXT, BitShares, ...

It is not easy to compare one on one these coins but Bitcoin is in no way superior technically speaking (and some times it can easily be considered worse!).

Technically speaking most innovations happen in altcoins since it is both:

• easier -- they don't have to support compatibility with the large infrastructure that Bitcoin has nor convince so many people for a change
  
• and safer -- not so much money at stake

Having said that, the altcoin experimentation have greatest risks, could lead to new unexpected attacks and so on. Bitcoin learns from altcoins and can implement some of the features (some cannot without overhauling the system) in the future if they prove successful without risking much.
