Title: Screenplay for a Bitcoin TV Ad.
Post by: Anonymous on June 29, 2011, 11:24:17 PM
The commercial starts zoomed out from the planet earth. Sounds of media and radio spout relevant news of our current political and economic turmoil.

*music starts to play, consisting of upbeat, technical bass-like tones*

A filtered satellite stream begins zooming into Capitol Hill Washington with media feeds growing louder into pure crowd-like chatter. Then with a flash-of-light it shows our politicians looking to Obama with his smug-like glaze. Then another flash and with a black, captivating background:

APATHY

Then another flash showing SWAT teams, police vehicles and violence in the streets. Then it transitions to an image of IMF leaders, Ben Bernanke and with newspaper headlines flowing transparently throughout.

Then with a similar background as apathy:

GREED

A feed of our US printing presses and workers stacking money. Shots of the buildings of Freddy and Fannie Mae, Bank of America; Wall Street with its stock tickers and trading pits.

Then:

CORRUPTION

Shots of Greece and protests. People getting mad with our current our system. Yells, screams and excitement.

Then a giant...

HOPE

It gradually fades away. ...and what's that? What's that shining dot in the center? It's growing larger! OH, IT'S BRIGHT! It's a... BITCOIN!

A ending drum sound, bass --whatever will bring attention-- plays.

A url to a informational Bitcoin website shows below the Bitcoin. Then the same sound.

A final flash to...

WHAT IS BITCOIN?

With the same URL at the bottom. Then cut.

Your thoughts? Who wants to help me put this on TV?

How about putting it on YouTube? It's a lot cheaper, and if it goes viral it will end up on TV anyway. For free. :)

I think the first set of ads should have a very positive spin, let the anti-government ones come out second wave (because I'm pretty sure all the anti-government nuts are on Bitcoin, and ad would be to get the general public, no?)

general public

Everything is about to get really bad. Actually it already is. A good portion of America is jobless. They have every right to be upset and this ad can connect with that.

The general public can be and is politically interested.

Seriously, it's only going to take an easy to use smartphone app to go viral to send bitcoin skywards. As long as it checks the market, uses a barcode scanner, has a secure wallet, and is fast, we will have a useful ninja currency. Make a commo about that.

Is there any way this could be done as a public service announcement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_service_announcement)?

I disagree, I see so many people around avoiding politics like the plague.    I will say though it depends on the group, there is no one commercial that would work for all, but I would just try and hit things as big as possible.

Anyways, if you want to get very serious with your ad, might I suggest using Google TV Ads, cheaper, better targeting (might as well find the best audience for your ad if it is listed), ease of use of course  http://www.google.com/ads/tv/

Awesome, the fact that you said that makes me see this as "oh shit, this commercial really might happen"

I have never created one, but had went through their whole process and regulations as far as video, just never used it for what I needed to, but still always felt the service was awesome, and if I had extra money, I would have a commercial for my penis every week.

Be careful about using "Hope" as the main point of the commercial, it reminds me a bit much of Obama's running campaign.

Anyway, if I wrote it, it would have more humor and less fear tactics, but that's just me.

Anyway, good luck!

Atlas,

How long would the running time be? I'm just curious, because I think I could do that in a relatively short time, being familiar with nonlinear video editors and the like. Let me know, and I'll try my hand at it.

Have two concurrent stories.

1.A guy buying something with his credit card and his wife finding the statement and him ending up homeless because of it
2.He used a bitcoin to buy something and is still living with his wife and family because theres no bitcoin statement for her to find.
 :)

Another two concurrent stories:

1. A sad fellow looking at his income statement of his website sees sales (expressed in $) are down.
2. A woman (or any other demographic besides a white male) smiles while viewing her increased sales (expressed in BTC).

Another two concurrent stories:

1. Retired couple in rural Kansas gets a frantic call at 2 a.m. Sunday morning from their backpacking granddaughter and her friend visiting Kenya. They've just been robbed and need money NOW.

2. Obvious parallel when Bitcoin infrastructure is better established.

Preferably 30 seconds, which I have a feeling would be hard. I had some media guy email me over this with a simple "let's do this". Does that happen to be you, by chance? Haha.

Two concurrent stories:
1. person who inserts a dollar bill in a vending machine repeatedly, just to have it spit back out at him/her.
2. Another who simply sends a few bitcoins with their cell phone and receives their convenience food.

"Use Bitcoin, for the love of packaged snacks!"

What, not convincing enough?

There are unforeseen social benefits to bitcoin transactions. Try to think of things people haven't thought much about. Remember those credit card commercials about the speed of swiping a card versus paying cash and making change? There are going to be ways to used bitcoins with smartphones that haven't been thought of yet that make bitcoins more useful and fun than cash or credit.

Nope, wasn't me - but I'll give it a shot and see if I can fit a 30-second window. It may go to a minute, though. I'll let you know if I have something in a few days.

Edit: Well, saw someone else is running with it in the "Donations for a Bitcoin Video Ad" thread, so I guess I'll work on something else :)

I don't like that ad idea.  It seems a lot more like a circlejerk for people who already know about bitcoin.  What you need to do is come up with an ad that shows bitcoin to newcomers.  The ad you have is way too dramatic for Joe Schmoe to take it seriously.

What you need to do is open it with a talk about what type of values bitcoin has.  Freedom, choice, no central authority, complete control, anonymity, etc.  These are personal values about how the world should work.  Bitcoin is merely a way to meet those values.

So you talk about values, then you introduce bitcoin, then you briefly explain what bitcoin is and how it works, and you give a URL for more info.  Just my 2 cents...

I love the idea but it screams. Cheap scare tricks, and might make a lot of people think bitcoins is something from russia.
Though zeitgeist is one of the most viewed documentaries...

But, be sure to test the advertizing and see if it is effective.

I believe that showing people what they have to earn from owning bitcoins is better in the long run.

Brainstorming:

How about?

What "currency" increased a thousandfold in value over one year and is expected to continue to rise in value?
Answer: Bitcoin

What currency has lost a 1000%? since it was introduced in 1920?
Answer: The dollar

What "currency" is controlled by no government, but all the people on the earth?
Answer: Bitcoin

How can you send in one second all over earth 24h a day to anyone with no fee?
Answer: Bitcoin

What will revolutionize the way people do business?
Answer: Bitcoin

This is a terrible idea.

Right from the start you're alienating at least 47% of the audience (Obama's current approval ratings), and from then on you will further alienate others who disagree with the political agenda crammed into this.

I personally do not disagree with everything you have put here, but why would you make this some sort of propaganda ad?

Bitcoin has real benefits, not just political grudge bonuses. Bitcoin is a currency, it is not some revolutionary concept targeted at overthrowing some evil.

Assuming this is going to be made, make the ad about Bitcoin and the problems it would solve for transactions, not politics.

Please don't alienate yet more people from trying Bitcoin out.

I've heard of that, it's a clever way that Satoshi proved a timestamp while perhaps opinionated as well. And? I think you missed the part where I said I didn't entirely disagree with your politics. We just don't want to make people think Bitcoin is primarily conspiratorial and alienate them, when the point is to encourage people to adopt Bitcoin. Right?

Man I get the feeling Atlas is taking way too much on his shoulders.

Hosting the immortal Bitcoin Podcast.
Asking strangers on the internet for $5 so he can play Team Fortress 2.
Writing this script/developing the commercial.
Forming the Team Fortress 2 Hat bitcoin exchange server.
Developing Easycoin, the worlds first virtual currency backed by a virtual currency.
Raising a bitcoin funded private mercenary army.

All while not having a job and depending completely on your parents.  The world truly oppresses you, young white privileged western male.  Won't someone break your chains of enslavement?!
