Title: Chinese translation of Bitcoin wiki (150 BTC)
Post by: Cryptoman on December 28, 2010, 07:10:49 PM
I think it would be fantastic if there were more Chinese users of Bitcoin.  First of all, the lessons learned by fending off attacks from the Chinese government would strengthen the Bitcoin network.  Secondly, having Chinese merchants online would expand the Bitcoin economy and give us more things to buy with our Bitcoins.  Thirdly, it's a step in the direction of freedom for the Chinese people.

I'm going to start the ball rolling by offering a 50 BTC bounty for translating the official Bitcoin FAQ (http://www.bitcoin.org/faq) to Chinese.  Please consider adding to this bounty or create one for another task.

Edit: Since we already have a Chinese FAQ, this project will be for translation of the wiki (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/)

Translation of Bitcoin wiki to Chinese (simplified):
Cryptoman   50 BTC
jgarzik    100 BTC
-------------------
Total      150 BTC

Nice!

Dumb question...  is this simplified or traditional Chinese?

I'm just starting to learn Mandarin Chinese (Simplified), and according to what I've read, mainland China prefers simplified characters, while Hong Kong and Taiwan use traditional characters.

You could start a Chinese language edition for the bitcoin.it project.

Actually that is a great idea, I could give it as class work for my better students, and they can use it as a way to earn some BTC(what they would spend it on I cannot guess).

It's simplified.

If the FAQ task is complete, there's no point in a bounty for that.

But I would pledge 100 BTC to see a Chinese (simplified) version of the wiki.

How many articles, though?

The English wiki seems to have some sort contributor reward system.  Presumably we can do the same for the Chinese wiki, though I have no idea how to prevent spam pages...

I've updated the project description.

Anonygas, could you take a look at the wiki and give us a feel for what you think is a reasonable way to break down this project and what the budget should be?  The wiki is obviously a moving target.  Thanks.

So I think this needs to be updated. I have a student translating the wiki at the moment, they're using my profile to do so.

What has been translated so far? the main page, the wiki FAQ, and buying bitcoins.

https://zh-cn.bitcoin.it/wiki/购买bitcoin
https://zh-cn.bitcoin.it/wiki/首页
https://zh-cn.bitcoin.it/wiki/常见问题解答

Working on securing your wallet.

What pages are needed to meet the bounty requirements?

A few hours ago, the Wiki's English Main page was accidentally turned into Chinese for a duration of 26 minutes.

Don't worry, these things happen all the time to all of us. :)

But I am just curious why don't the student open an individual account to do the wiki? Won't that be more convenient to everyone and a bit more secure (to you)?

As far as security is concerned this person has my trust, and it's only the account to the wiki, nothing else. as for ease of use, maybe. He's only starting to get a little interest in bitcoin, I just thought it would be easier to use my account, I get the payment and give to him than to set up a new account and then come on the forum asking for payment. I'm known here he's not, and he's not likely to use the forums much anyway.

I'll let jgarzik decide since he has more pledged, but I think certainly we should freeze the requirements based on what is currently implemented in the English wiki and not turn it into a moving target as people keep adding more.  What do you think is reasonable, given the current value of bitcoins?

I'd like to see a payment per page, make a list of all pages you want translated, then divide 150btc by this amount, we then have the amount per page.

Payments per page are great for motivation. I think my student would be disappointed to find out he only gets any payment after doing everything and would give up :s , remember some pages, like the very technical ones he might not be capable of translating.

The value of BTC has gone up quite a bit since this was opened :/  I cannot afford a 100 BTC pledge anymore, so I must unfortunately reduce my pledge to 50 BTC.

If the 15 most popular wiki pages are translated, I'd say that qualifies for the bounty in my opinion.

More than 1 persons will be editing the pages.

The bounty will be shared among them? According to who did what and how much?

Like I said, split the bounty between the number of pages. Pages editing history is on the wiki so it can be worked out who did what, exactly.

Also I think this should be a once off thing, to just get the Chinese version of the wiki off the ground. So first come first serve.

I am all for more resources for anything bitcoin related. And I am sure everyone feels the same.

But at the end, bitcoin is more or less real money now. You can exchange to real cash.

These is already a Contributors award which a bot will do the work on ranking contribution.

Is the Chinese version included? being counted for that Contributors award?

Is there is no bot to determine contribution level, argument or disappointment may arise.

It is awfully difficult to follow changes just by looking at the history, especially if a page is modified numerous times.

If I open a new page, write a couple of sentences. And the other people comes an write a couple of sentences each, with changes and deletion in between, how to you determine the contribution level with naked eye. And we are talking about 15 pages!

... student would be disappointed to find out he only gets any payment after doing everything and would give up ...

The bounty is not a lot but an encouragement.

Yes. It would be bad if they or anyone for that matter put in the efforts and not getting anything, or don't feel like they get a fair share. So a bit more open and quantifiable measure is better.

If the Chinese version is counted for that Contribution award, then Chinese contributors should get something at least.

I am not sure but.. how about asking MagicalTux and confirm that point first?? And maybe the bot can count contributions under the Chinese sub-domain and determine the ranking !?
And just like that contribution award, create a pool so other people can put bitcoin in it to make it more attractive?

Nefario, I trust you to manage the project on your end, so give me an address and I will send the 50 BTC to you now, and you can in turn pay out as you see fit.  Hopefully it will be you and not your student giving me an address.  :D

By the way, how much are my 75 yuan worth in BTC these days?  :)

Worth less btc than what you put in if it matched the current market rate. But since it was only you and ColdHardMetal who wanted any Yuanm, and no one here wanted bitcoins I'll just refund the original 25 btc amount or I could use that to make the payout.

It's up to you.
