Title: Is it worth getting paid in Bitcoin for freelance work?

I’m a web developer/designer and wondered if it’s worth getting paid in bitcoin? I’m from the UK and not sure how it would work in terms of the end of year tax return.

It is worth,if the bitcoin price volatility is low and the buyer doesn`t mind paying high transaction fees.
I`m not familiar with the UK tax system, but you will have convert all your bitcoin earnings into fiat money.
Paying with cryptocurrencies for freelance work is better compared to paypal payments.
Paypal fees are getting insane and the buyers can get a refund pretty easy.

A lot of factors come into play when getting paid in Bitcoin.

The price per coin and the amount of Bitcoin.

If you receive very little Bitcoin for your task and you decide to cash the coins out on an exchange, you might not have enough Bitcoins to pay for the transaction fee.

This the problem with freelancers paid with Bitcoin. The only advantage is if you bet to see the price increasing so you get more for the same job. The problem comes when it's time to report the income on the taxes properly. With the lack of considerations for freelancers and their status it is less constraining to use the traditional methods

It's worth it. But don't rely on it. You should accept FIAT currencies first and offer a Bitcoin option in case people want to use it.
Bitcoin is a great investment and I believe its value will go up, so its worth having some. You are liable to capital gains tax when you sell your Bitcoin for GBP.
You'll have to report your gains upon conversion to the HMRC, not sure how that works though as I'm not from the UK.
You're not liable to any taxes when you just keep your Bitcoin.

I guess doing signature campaigns is quite a freelance work to consider and it's very nice having bitcoin as our earnings each week so for me paying freelance job by means of bitcoin is really a good idea besides the value of bitcoin continue to appreciate so if we receive bitcoin as a payment we already have an investment in an instant.

Why not?

I know many friends working in this way and they earn more than they can earn from real life jobs. In UK, you need to prepare a document showing your income so that you can pay your income tax to the government, as far as I know.

I feel it is worth getting paid in BTC for freelance work if you have another source of income in fiat. Currently it is not fast and cost saving to convert BTC to fiat for living expenses.

As for the tax portion, I can’t comment because I am not familiar with UK tax.

Yeah, it is worth it. Getting paid in bitcoin for your services is the best way you can get paid. As the price of bitcoin is ever increasing,  you will make more profit as from the time you get paid in bitcoin to the time you get to sell your bitcoin.

This is actually quite a decent way to earn. You won't have to worry about losing money(if you're afraid of a risky investment) because you are only investing your time and effort. Your only problem will be finding the legit ones that actually pays you and it will be worth it.

You can get good payment for your web developing/designing services if you can design good website for different ICO and get into their developer team as UI developer. You can take payment in either bitcoin, eth or in form of their own token.

You can save on taxes as you can anonymously trade bitcoin with any local guy near you if you want to do so. In UK trading bitcoin is legal so you can send/receive/trade bitcoin freely.

Of course yes, your service is worth paid with bitcoin because the price of bitcoin is always going up trend although you just get small amount of bitcoin but the values is always increase time by time, if you keep it for long time or at least some of bitcoin be held for long time, and about the taxes must be paid to your government you can sell some bitcoin to fiat money, i think it is good solution but i am not sure about your problem with tax return, please make it more clear. Thank you so much.

It is good to earn some BTC if you believe in it and want to save it for future purpose. The advantage is that BTC is a irreversible payment method, which means you client can’t reserve the payment from your completed task.

The disadvantage is that the high transaction fee to convert BTC to fiat if you need it for living expenses.

Well, if you are asking in terms of taxation then is most of the countries, you will be taxed only when you will cash out your funds and hence if you don't want to cash out a certain portion of your earnings then it will remain untaxable as far as you are not cashing out those funds. On the other hand, if you are earning a living from your freelancing work then you will have to pay taxes since you will be cashing our the funds in that case so considering your situation, you can decide that if it is appropriate to charge fees in BTC or not.

Well in my country, even freelancing is not taxable and traceable as most people work online and get income in dollars or skill and other online payment methods. Bitcoin has made payment through freelancing more easy and now people can easy get their reward of online work though bitcoins.

Depends if you want to gamble on your livelihood. If you have funds back then I would say yeah take the investment and see what becomes of it. Worst thing happens is you lose a few months work best thing is you gain a few years worth of living. But do know even if you do this you will have to pay tax because you did provide a service that aspect is not negotiable.

It's good, but I'd do 50/50. Why not? Take the risk and see what happens. Worst case scenario, you're able to trade the Bitcoin into other altcoins. And figure out what the best thing to do is

That's some great country, believe me. I have heard of countries with 0% income tax, like Qatar, but it's among a few extreme cases. 90% of countries have income tax and it doesn't matter if you're employed by a company or running your own business.
I'd say it's worth getting paid in BTC because the chances of losing money on this deal are small, while you can really win a lot by holding. Don't act on my opinions though, I'm a gambler, I have some savings and I like my chances here. It may not be a good idea if the life of your family depends on your income.

Definitely worth it but kinda risky! I'm a freelancer too but I haven't found any work that pays bitcoin. If ever you get paid in bitcoin and you hodl, as long as the price will continue to rise then that would be great for you.

Go to the service section of bitcointalk. Plenty of work for BTC to be found there including graphics, coding, translation, social media management, advertising...

But it only applies if you are looking to make a living from this "freelancer work"

I suggest you to do it, only if you are aware of how your taxes for cryptos works in your country, i do not know how they work at 100% because i am not from there, but in my country it works almost by the same way.

You need to pay 10% over all your earnings

it depends because if you are in other countries they will charge you with taxes (mostly Europe countries).Even in our country, they might implement or consider taxing us if the Bitcoin community continues to spread its influence or trend to my fellow citizen. but currently I'm not facing any problems with bitcoin and I think that it is a very honorable job where we got to see different kinds of people and culture. it is not always about the money but also your experience and interaction with different kinds of people and  how can diversity compliments each and everyone's uniqueness.

well , it's way better to be paid in cryptos instead of fiat ,  cause the $ will not triple it's value overnight but cryptos can. Also be very clever what kind of cryptos you will accept tho.

I don't care the medium of payments, as long as the salary is decent enough. If I earn somewhere around $10 per hour, it is going to be OK. I don't really care whether my employer pays me using PayPal or Bitcoin.

I think it is worth it, depending on how much and the nature of your other income. The downside is that Bitcoin and other cryptos are very volatile compared to fiat, so if you need them during a bear market (which may last only a few days) you may have to sell at a loss. I would take them provided I have other income.

Of course it is. I've been doing that for quite some time for content creation work and it's been working really well. And if at some point you don't believe in the potential for bitcoin's price to rise further simply ask to get paid in an exchange's address and sell your funds for FIAT money when you get them. It's quite easy to handle bitcoin payments as a freelancer and the plus side is that you receive them instantly. It really is one of the most convenient ways to get paid as a freelancer.

Yes, certainly worth it. In the service section many people like you who offer services and are willing to pay using bitcoin, yes because this is a bitcoin forum. If you are already here, you should already know here people are talking about cryptocurrency, if you are not willing to pay using bitcoin, then your place is not here. Because of your concern, it seems to me that this whole issue of cryptocurrencies has been quite far of your interests throughout this time, so if at this moment you have more need to have cash, you should not feel obligated to accept bitcoin, although in my personal case I would try to negotiate 50% in fiat money and 50% in Bitcoin.

It's good to be payed in bitcoin as long as you are aware of the other factors that might influence bitcoin (price growth or not, the amount of work you do, the amount of bitcoin received for that work). If you think of it as a medium/long time investment i think it worths.

Getting paid in bitcoin is good but it depends how much bitcoin you receive per transaction if you receive small small amount then it couldn't be worth off because of transaction charges & If you receive regularly big amount in btc then it would be fine. Rest all depends on your country tax charges.

I think in terms of taxes it would work out you're paying more tax, but that is only because I believe the price of bitcoin will trend upwards. You'll probably pay some sort of income tax on earnings and then a capital gains tax equivalent on the increased bitcoin price.

Probably bitcoin can be one of the best medium to get paid (I hope the transaction time will to be improved in future which will make it more convenient) as if you get paid in bitcoin you get some sort of perks if the bitcoin's value pumps and also i believe other developed nations will follow Japan's footstep in adapting bitcoin or blockchain technology and go for crypto instead of fiat.

I mean what would you be losing out on, really? It might be worth it if the value continues on a bull run.

As for UK tax laws, I would assume that, and don't quote me since I am not a UK tax law expert, you would note down the value of the bitcoin when you receive it, and then whatever price you sell it for, either with capital gains or capital loss due to normal volatility, would be the portion that is taxed. One part being the "normal" salary, the work you were paid for, and then capital gain/loss being whatever changes from that point for your Bitcoin. Now, as I said, I don't know. I don't think that the UK has tax laws defined for something as specific as that.

But it probably wouldn't hurt much to accept part of your salary in Bitcoin.

I think it depends on the task you are going to take. Because you are the one taking the job, you should have an idea on how much earning is fair for you. Right now, bitcoin is rising at high pace. It might even reach triple the price it has last year. With that, you can know where your earning woould take.

I have no idea for what will end up on your end of the year income tax but if right now, for me it is really worth it.

If there is a provisions regarding cryptocurrencies in your country you should seek an assistance for local tax professionals, in normal practice you can declare your profit regardless of its source but getting paid with bitcoin will have an issue regarding its price since it is volatile so you should do my first advice.

I think it depends on the agreement about the method of payment that will be in use and bitcoin payment is good enough for freelance work even it is more profitable if we are in a country that doesn't have bitcoin tire, because we know so far bitcoin Function not yet fully in feel and in use by everyone in different countries.

I don't see the problem here? Work for bitcoin! You going to buy it anyway. You don't have to cash it out into fiat, you could just cashout a small amount and pay tax on that and buy everything else with bitcoin if you can. Keep your Bitcoin don't sell it for fiat.

Then you will have to prove when you received your Bitcoin and what price it was. You will have to give your wallet info and transactions. What will they do with that? Nothing because they don't know about how bitcoin works. So I'm not sure how you would make a tax deduction on that. Then when you need to prove your losses in altcoins ect how at you going to do that? Why don't you just keep the Bitcoin and use it as it is intended why would you want to swap it for ancient banking technology?

Well, right now governments doesn't apy any taxes for selling or buying Bitcoins because they first have to get knowledge about it and not soanyso people make profit from Bitcoin to pay taxes. Right now it is not such a big problem for them.

But if you want to be sure that you are not receiving home any amend for the money you have in your bank account it is better to go and pay taxes and you say that you made the money from freelancing. They are going to understand

If you are getting paid in Bitcoin there would be risk and high transaction fees.
Due to the non stable price of bitcoin it can be a good thing nor a bad thing when it comes to bitcoin. Still the decision is up to you but, its a good thing to risk your earning in bitcoin.

I barely understand the English but i see your point. It is really hard to state freelancing as a job. You got many companies to vouch for you but it is also harder it those companies are online. Especially with this anonimity and you cant exactly show your address. It is better to earn money at least make some Real life investment like an internet cafe or restaurant. As you are the owner, you can add money to your income stating you had many costumers.
