As the year 2018 has been speculates to be the year of altcoins will it be better to invest into bitcoin or altcoins ? Which one will give more return in both short term as well as long term ? I am bit puzzled whether to go for well established bitcoin , Litecoin, ethreum or Ripple, Dodge coin, Dash.

It is a hard question to answer. LOL
Try to invest to both of them. altcoins will just ride the rise of bitcoins market value. Afterall, it is because of the altcoins why its price is going up.

I've watched some videos and a lot of articles about some altcoins that are gaining attention lately like Litecoin and Ripple. Their prices increased a huge percentage and it is possible that it will still continue to grow due to the many investors that got interested in its growth. Although there are good altcoins to invest with, investing in bitcoin is still a good idea because there is still a huge possibility that it will continue to rise.

Bitcoin and choose some altcoins this will lead always as cryptocurrency. Both are profitable but ofcourse pick altcoins that has the potential to boost its price. Also if in doubt do some research which will be the best to invest in 2018.

It seems like bitcoin has grown a staggering amount in the last year and people are looking at other cryptocurrencies to replicate the results. Bitcoin has the biggest market share and overall popularity but it 's surprising how much other altcoins like Ethereum, Litecoin and others are gaining traction.

Right! A good research will help him decide what altcoins he should invest in 2018. Try to invest on coins that have recently gone down but still stays stable.

All of the alts have insanely outperformed BTC since 2014. You'd have to be very stupid or unlucky to have done worse with alts. That makes me wonder whether people feel entitled to alt gains that will no longer be in the bag. You can go a long way on empty promises but I wonder how far.

It depends on whether you believe in a rising tide raising all boats. I suppose there are so many newcomers now that's possibly more valid than ever. Let's see.

I mean, a lot of people are getting excited that Coinbase is going to add more altcoins next year, and I would be too since we can expect a massive increase in the price of some altcoins. But I doub't it's going to be the year of altcoins, Bitcoin will still be around, you know? and stronger than ever once SegWit and the Lightning Network are fully working. If anything, is going to be year of Bitcoin.

until a real altcoin is created that is something apart from being a pump and dump, the answer to your question is the same:
bitcoin for both short and long term.
and altcoins for short term only.

in fact in short term, specifically in a couple of days to a week (mostly day trading) altcoins can be much better than bitcoin because they get pumped and rise >100% in a day or so. and you can make profit only if you catch the pump.

and at the end of the day, it depends on you. for most people are not traders, so they choose a safe option and go with bitcoin instead.

Each of of coin you can expect a good return. I have a little doubt on Ripple and Doge coin. You can subdivide your investment into the each coin and that is a better idea than investing in a single coin.

Your correct. It is always a good idea to invest to all of the coins that have potentials than focus on one coin.

I will choose both as an investment, I see that when I rely on one of them then it will be quite risky. So choosing Bitcoin and altcoin could be the best choice, I might divide the portion by 70% for Bitcoin and 30% for investment in Altcoin.

That is one strategy that can make me get the best results because in 2018 we will not know what will happen. While currently Bitcoin and Altcoin are experiencing a positive trend and movement looks green, which means an increase compared to before.

I think 2018 too will be a great year for Bitcoin.You can not go wrong with investing in Bitcoin if you hodl long term.Don't invest in non recongnized ico.Investing in altcoin in not bad either provided it's a well established crypto and have some good community support to back up the price :)

I've got rid of most of my altcoin stash on Bittrex last night. They can increase the price in fiat over time, but they will always be behind bitcoin, and you'll lose fractions of bitcoins in the process.

But I'm not a radical purist. I have a litecoin node and I still let my dash in Bittrex.

Bitcoin and ethereum are still the best to invest your money on 2018. Bitcoin is in demand many people have recognized it, there will be more investors getting into bitcoin and Ethereum is next to bitcoin everytime that bitcoin rise up ethereum does it too.

Same, I think choosing one is much riskier than having both bitcoin and altcoin investments. It’s better to have two option and can also lessen the probability of losses because two is better than one. But you must choose the best and promising alternative currency like litecoin or ethereum. So always take time to think to eventually get the best.

Both are great to be invested in, but if compared, Bitcoin still holds the tag to remain one of the safest investments in 2018 knowingly.
Speculators have claimed that Bitcoin can give a hyperbolic $60k shot during mid-term 2018 and if that's going to be true (even if we see a $40k which is >200% of the current price), I guess Bitcoin still holds majority of investments to be held during next year too as well as altcoins may conquer the "pump" competition in terms of price surge, but the way they will crash will be worst and so, Bitcoin remains the safest.

Invest in both of them, some altcoins already posses a good opportunity in the market. I think safe investment would be bitcoin, but there are some promising altcoins to choose with.

You should put your money in BTC and Alts.
I got 50% in BTC and 50% in alts (ETH, XRP, WAVES and recently HVN)

As the Alts are rising and falling hourly and sometimes in a two digit range..thats definetly the showcase for its short term usefullness.
I mean..you can hold Alts as well, ETH is a good example, but your 50% in BTC may give you solid % in a long term.

To be clear..thats all speculation and observation, but i am doing fine with that.

Bitcoin is the best choice for long term investment: 2017 investors got 18x their original capital.
It would be better to trade altcoins instead of holding them, many of them are too risky but can afford a good income

Invest on both as they are profitable coins when you invest it will provide profit. The altcoins you willl pick above are ensure profit like eth, litecoin, and ripple. When you observe the price in the market history you are in profit if you have bought before but still you can serve it as long term.

I strongly believe that by the end of 2018 XRP will reach 10x tiers.

Not really that hard, it is just plain investment and in any investment, it is always good to diversify. Like you have said, the main thing is to just focus on finding good altcoins to invest in while adding bitcoin as well and watch all of them grow over the years.

A lot of alts if anyone has been holding have done very good this year and that shows that no good project or coin can be sidelined.

If you are an investor, it is just better to invest in as much as you can invest in. The altcoin market are booming now and as long as you can find a pretty good project to invest in, it is better to just stick with it and make it rain for you in the long run with the profit. Diversification is necessary in this industry and it is just better not to miss the chance on any good coin.

I totally agree with you. the best to invest in both. bitcoin is still the currency are many supporters. make sure that the price will still rise in the year 2018. however with the problems that Bitcoin is encountered, surely more people will move to invest in altcoin better btc . so choosing good altcoin and invest a little in it that is completely accurate

If you dont think that any Altcoins suggested here are good, you should just look them up yourself.
On this Forum are many good explanations why xyz is good and you can decide yourself if some Alt is worth investing or not.

I think 2018 could be very positive for the Altcoins because there is a technology that is constantly improving itself. In this case, it would be more effective to divide the investment and make equal investments in Bitcoin and altcoins. Let's not forget that only novice investors invest one time.

Bitcoin and altcoin are both good investment to take and if possible try to divide your investment to both coin for me I would keep a 70:30 proportion in making my investment because as bitcoin continue to appreciate there are also promising alts that will hit higher in the coming years like ethereum, litecoin and other ICOs O don't think it would be bad if we will not focus on one item I mean the more coins we have the more chance of sucess.

Better put your attention to altcoins right now. Bitcoins cannot support many more investors and its technology needs some updating.

Both of are good for invest and also profitable. Bitcoin and chose some altcoin which are potential in market both enough to make you profitable.

Both is good in investing but as of know it think we should invest in alt coin cause it has a possibility to increase even to slow ,but for me in my opinion this will make a good return after.  Yeah that two are different which is the disadvantage of bitcoin it can jump to a high vlaue after the correction but the disadvantage it will fall constantly.  and the alt even slowly climbing for sure it will never fall hard like bitcoin. And as i see on that both, alt coin is much better to hold nowadays instead of bitcoin.

I think, altcoin has very good potential in 2018 later. Because, this year they arguably collapsed which of course the investors will try to make its value again valuable.

Well, bitcoins technology is aging. It has now big transaction fees and slow processing of transactions. I guess we will have to put investments to altcoins.

I don't think so. Altcoins are also profitable. There are many altcoins who performed good this year. One of them is ETH, the price movement of ETH was very stable and very profitable to its investors.

when people talk about altcoins and their prices they are talking about the price in BTC and altcoins have performed horribly in that front which caused their USD value also go wild with the swings.

in case of ETH nothing about it has been ever "stable", i don't know where you are looking but the swings are crazy. it started with a pump this year and went up from 0.01BTC to 0.15BTC in only 3 months (1400% in 3 months is not called "stable") and then started its downward spiral where it got dumped step by step to 0.02BTC (again 86% loss in 4 months is not called "stable") and not it is starting to rise up again with another pump.

Well those ups and down are normal. Also in bitcoin, there were those pumps and dumps no one have ever imagined. What I am saying is, although there were this fluctuations, price is still good and still going up.

This is a huge world and just leaving your funds in one does not really seem like a good way to invest. Bitcoin may receive a huge share since it is more established, but the fact is that some other altcoins will keep doing good as well and increasing at large, so the best is just to hold some of them but definitely not for all of your capital.

Diversifying across many altcoins and still keeping big portion of capital for bitcoin must be a wise idea for both naive as well for professional investors and traders.

Altcoin will have good prospect in 2018. Some coins such as XRP, BCH, NXT are pumping high recent, those price was growing fast in month. I'm sure this still happen in next year. It is good to invest on those coins.

They are both profitable by next year. Some altcoins are showing signs of growing by next year, it will depend on decision but I think diversifying is a good thing to do.

For me bitcoin is still the number one choice for me because up until now it is still the king in cryptocurrency  still has the highest value in terms of price. The price of altcoin depends on the price of bitcoin. If you want to invest for long time then you can choose bitcoin. Otherwise for short time investment, altcoin is the best choice. But you should choose the potential and good altcoin. Better suggestion for you to invest on both bitcoin and altcoin.

I think both are good enough for investment but certainly have differences for the type of investment that will be done, and I agree if bitcoin would be better if done for long-term investment while altcoin course for short-term investments.

Like any others, Both would be ideal. Since the crypto world is emerging and a lot of things can happen next year. Long term or short term investments needs to be studied before engaging. I suggest you diversify your portfolio. It is recommended to keep 70% of your funds to the Big 3 of crypto world: BTC, LTC, ETH. Then, put the rest of it to atleast 5-10 alts which you have made research on. 2017 has been a remarkable year for cryptocurrencies and I hope that 2018 will become a better year. I think both are best to invest in 2018. For long time investment bitcoin is best and short time investment altcoin. But you need to chose the stable and potential altcoin. Now it is fully depend on you.

Yes my suggestion is also going with both because after investing in both you have less risk and both have good potential for giving good profit as bitcoin can touch new highs so investing in long term much better for altcoins you must study and do some research because without this its never been wise decision to invest in this as many scam coins coming and taking good amount of investors

I would rather invest in both coins because either of them will go fall i wouldn't loss that much of my investments. More new altcoins now are starting to rise, so i'd rather wait and see them grow.  :D

If your are not started yet to invest with them, I suggest that you invest with altcoins. There is a lot of altcoins that are dumping today and could give us a huge profit, and I'mprttey sure that it will surge by next year. Though bitcoin are really profitable since from the start but considering the price today in buying is really expensive compared to Altcoins, unless you have guts and enough capital for this.

It is hard to choose, which one if you dont know really much each coins. You have to take a little research about it, so if possible it is good to invest on both. Also I think the changes in price of bitcoin depends somehow on altcoins movement. Whichever you prefer, its up to you how will you risk all your coins to each of them.

Bitcoin experienced a lot of surge in it's price in 2017 but we are noticing a drop in the end of 2017.But this does not means that I will stop investing in Bitcoin. I will take this drop as an opportunity to invest more in it because I am conversant by the potential of Bitcoin. Exactly. I think investing in different types of coins is actually a smart move since you're expanding your horizons towards assurance. By investing in both Bitcoins and Altcoin, there are low chances of going home with nothing because somehow both coins will gain profit. Bitcoin alone can be promising but its volatility can be quite a deal breaker at times which is why trying out on other coins won't be a burden because you will somehow have a fall back. I'm not saying that other coins are not worthy, but they will definitely be there to assure that you will have profit no matter what.

Both from my point of view. Mostly i keep in bitcoin and ethereum and looking for any opportunity to try to get any other coin was is ICO or something that have good attention on some exchange. Keeping them is good as we can always expect to see better price tomorrow but sometimes is good to invest and to take good opportunity for additional income.

I'd still pour my bet for Bitcoin. Bitcoin is expected to be more expensive next year which will give us profit and will make it kore profitable. Hardforks are rumoured which might positively affect Bitcoin in all aspects so it clearly says that Bitcoin would still be the best crypto investment nextyear and will remain better compared to altcoins.

Investing in crypto is always a matter of concern so you have to look after various factors like return,profits so you have to choose wisely.You can divide up your portfolio in ratio of 60:40 which means investing greater one in bitcoin and rest in altcoins as both are profitable option.This can help to yeild returns in short as well as long term because altcoins can be used in short time period and btc for longer period.Large in btc because prices are really going to rise rapidly in future so go with both the option rest is your choice.

In general both are too closely linked to make a huge difference in the direction you choose. We can see when bitcoin falls the alts follow.

For me, if you have enough money to spare I say that it would be good to invest on both bitcoin because in bitcoin we believe that after the holiday seasons pass by bitcoin price will be able to rise again. As for other alternative coins there are others showing potential especially during the turn-around of bitcoin.

But this time the bitcoin dominance gets decrease a lot. i remember about some weeks ago bitcoin still hold around 64% market dominance in the crypto and in this time bitcoin hold only around 38% from the total market shares in crypto. that means bitcoin lost a lot caused by altcoin. altcoin seems become a new way to invest in crypto rather than buy bitcoin with very high fees.

I agree, much better if doing both to invest in bitcoin at the same time in altcoin, because they have potential to increase their value and we gain more profit from it, ( but it's depend on your purpose. ) Anyways, bitcoin was active when it comes to price or value, so when the value of bitcoin drop down, altcoin will follow, so much better to do both, that's my opinion.

Obviously it's altcoins that'll give you more return. Bitcoin is just a currency that you use as your medium to trade with various altcoins. Trading altcoins has its own limitations so beware of it. To add to your list, I'd suggest you, XLM, XEM, POWR, XVG. These coins have been pumped quite frequently so there's a good for it to get pumped again.

with high fee of bitcoin i will choose altcoin.
