Does anyone know the process for sending an alert to the client like the current litecoin upgrade alert?

The wiki page https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Protocol_specification#alert has good techy info on the protocol, but a howto would be appreciated. Like a walk through and sample script on how to send alerts to a coin network. Title: Re: Command for sending an alert to client?
