As great an announcement as this might be, it's a bit absurd how this has affected Kodak's stock price. From $3 this morning to $9 in after hours trading. Has $200 million in value really been created? Also, according to Marketwatch, 10% of the company's public float is being held in short positions. Must've been a bad day for them.

Company that totally missed the shift to digital age of photography and now tries to spearhead the crypto era for photography. Interesting

As great an announcement as this might be, it's a bit absurd how this has affected Kodak's stock price. From $3 this morning to $9 in after hours trading.

As per google, the highest was $7.10 not $9. Still, 120% gain is insanely high for traditional stocks.
This quote from the article explains it a bit:

Quote
"This is a phenomenon we saw back during the dot com days in the late 1990s where traditional companies would mention some kind of internet strategy and their stock price would jump up," commented Garrick Hileman from the University of Cambridge.

Investors got way overexcited about it. Then again, if Kodak manages to manufacture their own rigs, more efficient than Bitmain's ones + if they have their own power plant (as mentioned in article) + if the rumours about China capping mining operations are true - then this could turn out to be the best move for Kodak.

Creating their own crypto seems to me like a totally missed idea, but if they were to launch it as an ICO, they could pocket some really big and quick profit even if the project fails in the longer run.

Company that totally missed the shift to digital age of photography and now tries to spearhead the crypto era for photography. Interesting

Their timing is a bit off on this one too. If they did this ~2 years ago, when "blockchain technology" was No.1 buzzword, the effect would have been much better.

I am happy to hear that. It could be a revival of the legendary company. I used to buy Kodak's films back in 90s and it was sad that it became a bankrupt in 2012. Let's hope that ICO will help Kodak bring back its old days.

It is a very interesting news and project for a big company to join and create their coin. I just read something about photographers selling their work after being licensed and will be paid which means a blockchain for them will be made?

Scam? ))) They try to jump to the moving train. Will wait when Kodak ico) I hope they have really good reasons(good idea) to run KodakCoin

it's mentioned in the quoted article:

Quote
Kodak's other initiative, the KodakCoin, is being created as part of an effort to build a global ledger of picture rights ownership that photographers can add their work to.

Associated KodakOne software will be used to crawl the web and find pictures that have been used without permission.

The company said it would then "manage the licensing process," so the photographer can be paid, in KodakCoin

I see it as potentially good idea, but have doubts whether Kodak knows what they're doing. If they want to put themselves as manager of the licensing process, then it suggests their blockchain/currency will be centralised and if so, there's no really a need for a blockchain, definitely not for a new currency (they could just accept fiat).

But if they did it as a decentralised storage + smart contracts, where authors could upload their work, pick a relevant tags/categories, set their pricing etc, then it could work great, cutting off the middle-men such as Shutterstock and Getty Images.

Yup. Read it somewhere and got interested.
Kodak is an established company, and for them to get into cryptocurrency is a big deal.  This something we should prepare to join once it open it's door to investors.

It was already up to $9 in after hours trading when I posted that. Now it's at $12, so a 300% increase since yesterday. Given this is all based on a simple announcement, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw more publicly listed companies make similar announcements in the future.

being a photographer as a hobby this is a very interesting idea, having your photos stolen without many possibilities to claim as yours this can be a goos solution to this.
I will keep my eyes open to this project and see how it will go.

Are you people F'ing kidding me?? This is the most pathetic joke we've seen to date. They bought  a bunch of S9's and slapped their crappy bumber stickers on them and are calling them Kodak Miners. They make ridiculous profitability claims and don't even mention rising difficulty. This is a pathetic and embarrassing effort to boost their share prices so the insiders that participated in the buy out can cash out. These people are either incredibly stupid, or incredibly dishonest. I'm betting the latter. This is a HORRIBLE Harbinger for Crypto. Trust me, this is a sure sign that there is a HUGE washout coming for this space. Now we know who is scooping all the S9's from Bitmain on the recent releases. F Kodak and all these other greedy corrupt corporations that are destroying BTC and it's foundation.

Im not saying that this is legit.

What im saying is that it will happen to Bitcoin the same that happened to the dot coms in the 90s. The traditional companies will look at it as a fast profit product and they will invest on it in 2018, taking a lot of persons with them to invest also.

In 2019 it will crash and a lot of persons will lose money.

So, to invest is now and take the money out before 2019.

Hopefully, they will survive with help from blockchain. I have always thought there would be a resurgence of film photographers. I always liked doing film photography and I think there are a lot of people my age who feel the same way and sometimes younger generations get into retro things like this.

When I was Christmas shopping this year, I saw a Polaroid camera at the store. It looked like the original film cameras.

But that does not mean that more money is coming to the crypto world? The main problem are those that are here without knowing what to do and spend money regardless of the risk they are taking.

That can be translated in good opportunity for some, no?

It certainly could my friend. I definitely don't know for sure. It's impossible to gauge the velocity and depth of the potential pool of money and which way it is going. I just see a lot of very blatant warning signs that I have seen in so many "manias" in the past. Everyone seems to be piling in and that's usually not good. I live by this;

" Be Greedy when others are fearful and be fearful when others are greedy". Right now "greed" is at epic levels.

This.

Although it was kind of smart on Kodak's end.

Since they are a mainstream business, they can appeal to the crowd and make good profit doing so.

Is it a good product? Is it unique? Is it new? Nope. It's simply just appealing to those who don't know any better.

And unfortunately these non-organic money grabs are what cases more violent crashes.

It is a good news but usually they are slow in adapting and so is the reason they are left out in the digital world of photography because they did not want any change in their business structure and so was the reason for their downfall and good to see that they are jumping on the crypto currency bandwagon before major corporates and start mining bitcoin and planning to come out with their own coin. ;D

They are using the same scam model as the parasite "Resellers" that try and sell the Antminers at 5 X the release price. Claiming that what you're making today is a constant. Complete bullshit. It's sure a cheering news for the crypto-world to have a renowned company as Kodak shifting gears to embrace Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general. If they were a dinosaur until now, obviously they've ceased to be as the hand writing on the wall is that of a company that now thinks differently and want to be relevant in the digital age.

I also noticed that line about " ...and we expect another 300 to arrive shortly" and it can only mean they're ordering the hardware from China. Nevertheless,I would want to see that move as feelers and given that their mining capacity is already sold out and a big pile-up of demand, I see them unavoidably folding their sleeves, besides China nondescript stance on cryptocurrency is this time around pushing them to clamp on mining operations in China.

Quoting Torque's post from Wall Observer thread:

Kodak, wow just wow, 400% in two days - not bad for a company that destroyed itself by ignoring digital photos.

Here's a script for any ailing company:

1. Start pushing an internal cryptocoin or blockchain integration agenda
2. Quietly buy up company stock shares for 6 months
3. Publically announce said crypto agenda, even it is complete vaporware
4. Watch shares of stock get pumped jump 400-500% overnight
5. Profit !

Holy insider trading, I nailed it!

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/kodak-stock-pulls-back-directors-disclose-acquisitions-prior-to-blockchain-rally-2018-01-11

Quote
"On Jan. 8, the day before Kodak’s crypto announcement, no fewer than seven directors acquired derivative securities convertible to common stock, according to Form 4 filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The securities are restricted stock units, or RSUs, which were granted under Kodak’s “2013 Omnibus Incentive Plan” (OIP) and vest on Jan. 8, 2019, except as otherwise provided in the award notice, and subject to continuous service as a member of the board of directors, according to the filings. Even with the timely acquisition, there’s no guarantee the RSU’s will be profitable when they are vested.

Some board members also sold derivative securities, convertible to common shares, on Jan. 9, the day the “blockchain” news was reported.

Kodak said the timing of the insider activity was a “coincidence.”

How can this be termed as a coincidence at all, this is what happens when the corporate people decides to start their very own cryptos. There should be an investigation by the SEC in the whole matter because this is highly suspicious and fraudulent.

This is a good start for big corporations to enter the cryptoverse. They are seeing the infinite potential behind cryptocurrencies, I hope there are more companies to follow Kodak's thinking outside the box. Apple, Amazon, Facebook, etc. - once they embraced crypto, the people will follow.

Its a shame and others will follow.

If this is not treated and it should be, it can ruin crypto currencies reputation and make us lose some money

I actually am surprised that Kodak is still alive. But seems as they are struggling in their usual business field as they are trying to get a foot in Bitcoin mining. Let us see how this enfolds, I'm curious and will keep an eye open for this one.

Kodak is one of the big companies that makes the smart move to get involved into bitcoin/blockchain. The growth in share prices already show a great reaction from the investors. Curious to see how their ICO will go on. Stay tuned, guys!

Don't get too excited.
The purpose of the Kodak's announcement was almost certainly just to bump their stock up. Mission accomplished.
Some board members allegedly committed insider trading (source (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178336.msg27850705#msg27850705)). If true, they did it in the most blatant and retarded way, bought just before the announcement and sold right after.

Their mining operations was just buying 80 (inefficient) whatsminer units and putting a "Kodak KashMiner" stickers on them (credit to BenRickert (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2719323.msg27941703#msg27941703))

ICO will probably never happen. The brief description of the purpose of new tokens doesn't make much sense. If they intend it to be centralised, there's no need for blockchain/tokens.

Lesson: the heavily regulated stock market seems more susceptible to manipulation than the unregulated, wild-west crypto market. Hmm

Well, thanks for sharing this article which reminds me of my past days with Kodak and photography. Kodak is really a big brand name in the photography world and this brand name alone will attract many investors from all around the world. This is a good opportunity for Kodak to start a new business in this Bitcoin mining field. But this time they should need to do good and they should be moving along with the crypto market trend and they should be following a good business strategy and also they should be managing their business better than before.

This is great. Larger companies are realising the potential of Bitcoin. This will push bitcoin and it's value and make it look even more legit to the be believers. Kodak will not waste their time on nonesense. Good going Kodak!!

You're reading comprehension scores are in the basement. Kodak just launched a highly illegal Pump and Dump scheme. It is VERY likely that 5-7 of their officers are going to end up in jail for insider trading. People need to stop being perpetually regurgitating, mindless cheerleaders and engage in some "critical thinking". Seriously, mankind is fucking doomed.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!! 7 Kodak Executives at least, have been found to have purchased large blocks of common stock days prior to the announcement and those same scumbags literally sold those shares the DAY AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT. Do you see a potential problem with that? Because the SEC does. Yeah, " go Kodak!!" LMAO! The only train they will be on is the engine pulling the train in their prison cell with all the inmates taking turns being the caboose.

When Kodak announced the release of KodakCoin, its share price soared. So in view of this, most people are positive about the virtual currency, which is a good sign. I believe more and more companies issue virtual currency, it will lead to another surge in BTC prices.

Well, I always wondered why Bitcoin Miners Producers are not mining Bitcoin themselves? It would be pretty dumb not to do so, considering what the future lays ahead of us.

Exactly. That's all this is. A company jumping on a hype, hoping to see their shares rise (which is exactly what happened). Can't blame them I guess, but it's pretty dumb

This is great news. Kodak started from films and photograph papers shifted to tablets and now they are now on mining rig. I checked their stocks value and it soars high very fast. It means that this is a good approach to their company.

Actually you can "blame" them. As a matter of fact, the executives of Kodak are so stupid that 7 of them bought large blocks of the Company's common shares 1 and 2 days prior to the announcement and literally sold them the day OF the announcement. The SEC is absolutely looking to "blame them" and I would bet a large amount of money that several Kodak insiders are going to jail for insider trading. Look it up. The SEC investigation is already underway. The dumbshits also sold the shares way before they actually rallied to the highs. They got so anxious they left millions on the table. Which they will need to pay their attorneys.
