What are the chances Ethereum will surpass Bitcoin by market cap?

Will not happen. Bitcoin will be the number one forever in the cryptocurrency. As you can see without bitcoin there will be no alt coin. Bitcoin is the pillar and king of Cryptocurrency thus no one can shake its position as the number one.

The same thing was said recently about the ripple, bch but where are they now?

remember marketcap not the price,,
and maybe it will happend again in the future, nothing impossible in crypto world

I trust Ethereum very much. It continues to progress with solid steps. But Bitcoin is always number one in this market.
For this reason, I think Ethereum doesn't have a chance to beat Bitcoin.

Hmm as far as i know as the price increases so do the marketcap, afaik this is the current highest price of eth in the moment still bitcoin leads 100B usd marketcap. When the in the past bitcoin's price is not that high still it has the highest marketcap. anyway correct me if im wrong.

Reason I'm asking is that Bitcoin whales are obviously diversifying in the last couple of months. Ripple's ascent was the obvious consequence (a few other coins, too). But if you look at real numbers, Bitcoin doesn't do anything any other coin doesn't, while Ethereum is the highest used blockchain. And usage drives value. Just compare the main parameter - number of transactions: https://blockchain.info/charts/n-transactions and https://etherscan.io/chart/tx. I expect this year a lot of DAPPS based on ETH that were started last year will get into production, and their usage will further enhance the ETH lead (if it manages to scale, of course). I know, there was a lot of talk on this same topic back in June, when ETH reached 0.16 per BTC. But this time ETH has proven usage...

Everything can be, but it will not just be done. All people know about only Bitcoin, they know that BTC grows and it is very expensive.
If Vitalik makes ETH  so popular and recognizable as BTC then maybe ETH surpass Bitcoin by market cap.

Considering the situation right now, i believe ethereum can surpass bitcoin. In teems of usage, ethereum has many of it. It terms of demands, they both are highly demanding in the crypto world. Ethereums advantage right now is its ability to adopt in many payment situation.

I think that Ethereum can surpass Bitcoin ( market cap ), but it will not be an easy task, because I believe there are a very large number of people who know and trust Bitcoin but even knowing Ethereum does not have enough confidence to invest.

ETH cannot surpass BTC. However, NEO can surpass ETH. So, I am keeping NEO for the long term, for BTC, I am not sure, it is not stable at all.

The ethereum is not yet immune from the numerous shortcomings that are inherent in bitcoin, for example, the problem of scaling.

I will suggest you Bitcoin,it always best compared to any of altcoin ,even an Ethereum.Ethereum is best for long term profit, if you are investing for your future means go with Ethereum then bitcoin.Y ou will get some more dollars for less investments.

Bitcoin is always on top compared to Ethereum but if we on possibilities that Ethereum surpass Bitcoin it would be hard to believe because Bitcoin is more popular.

But blockchain is not about the kings. It's completely opposite - about de-centralizing. A lot of people moved to BitcoinCash already. Again, main parameter - usage, ETH is far ahead for some time now, and that is adding value with every day.

If ever Ethereum can surpass it will take years and serious investors moving their funds and shifting to Ethereum. And I don't think that they will do that. They become rich because they are not dumb.

Look at Ripple, they said that they will overtook bitcoin, but what happened? When it reaches top price, investors suddenly dumping it and take the profit and invest on other coins like bitcoin and Ethereum. It could be Ethereum vs other altcoins.

These two major crypto coins is different with each other,but they share the same problem.First the blocksize second slow transaction confirmation and third congested network if ethereum can resolve the BTC's network disadvantages surely in the future ethereum can surpass BTC but if eth cant do that no it will never reach BTC.

Bitcoin is the most popular name, when it comes to crypto currencies. I don't think Ethereum is near half popular. Bitcoin has been attacked many times, but always come back stronger.
I don't think Ethereum will surpass Bitcoin any time soon.

BTC will be number one for a long time, but ETH has very good changes to be strong number two.
Somebody says that NEO can surpass ETH. I belive in NEO, but it's too much to it. It's unreal in near future.

Market cap wise - true, ETH is half of Bitcoin at the moment. But its USAGE (which means real popularity) is 4 times higher (number of daily transactions), and the difference keeps growing (see 2 graphs I posted above). My point is that if something is being used more, it should be valued more (in the long run, of course).

its hard for eth to surpass btc by market cap, but its not imposibble. eth in a good development now, all people try to invest in this coin cause eth is a stable one coin in  market now. and the development also in a good way, so maybe its possible to surpass btc but not now.  maybe need  3 or 4 years again.

The possibility is there number 1 place is only temporary in any circumstance. Ethereum has a potential to surpass the bitcoin two years from now based on what I have read and observe.

It's very real by the end of 2018. Bitcoin's potential is over. Technically altcoins are more advanced: faster, lower fees and smart contract support. Ethereum's potential is huge. Ethereum is more advanced than Bitcoin and is also a platform for other services. I'm sure it will be Bitcoin's successor in the future.

In my opinion, almost 0, if the total market value of ETH exceeds BTC, then the whole cryptocurrency market will collapse, because any token can replace bitcoin in the future.

I think it could be, but only in a few years. Bitcoin still very strong and Ethereum have tough times even now

I think that this is the same as answering the question. "Who do you love more, Mom or Dad?" . Both Bitcoin and the Etherium will soon be forts.

I really don’t understand why people keep comparing these two.. Anyways here is my honest opinion to this question; i don’t think that it’s going to happen so..

It could happen if the Bitcoin transaction still takes a long time and high fee then Ethereum has a better feature.

Most people here allow that (ETH>BTC by market cap) as a possibility, but "long time in the future". My question would be then what is "long" time in crypto world? In my experience crypto currencies are so volatile, that something like Segwit2 will happen (like last fall when many bitcoiners moved to BCH), and ETH can surpass BTC in a matter of a week or two (it almost did at that point). And then drop. But overall my feeling from the answers here is that most people think it's a high possibility due to ETH gaining popularity faster then BTC.

I do think one day ETH will be more valuable than bitcoin, but it will be way in the future. Bitcoin has been around for a lot longer, and is the flagship of cryptocurrencies.

no one knows, all can happen in cryptocurency, we wait and see and take the position where we will be involved. that's all it needs to do.

eth will be one of the cryptocurrency coins that have the strongest positions and high prices in the foreseeable future. but I think the bitcoin is still far superior to everything in eth b app so it gives confidence if we have to have bitcoin and eth.

i think ethereum will hardly have the chance to surpass bitcoin in many years from now, because first the supply of bitcoin is just 21 milion dollar, that makes the shortage higher in the future, and the value of bitcoin rightnow is a big distance that ethereum can hardly to catch up easily.

I think that both ETH and XRP have a chance - but we must never underestimate Bitcoin.
Towards the middle of last year it looked likely that ETH would take number one... but then Bitcoin had a massive bull run.
Very difficult to say what will happen. Only last week I was saying that XRP would never drop below $1 again - and today it hit $0.90

Ethereum will beat bitcoin very soon.. Because it is more than what bitcoin is.. In background lots and lots of developments going on for Ethereum than bitcoin. So I believe ETH catch first position soon. 

This chance is very less and hard but It is not impossible. I believe ethereum that will come to a very nice point but Bitcoin is very powerful and doesn't give easily ıts location.

Go for eth, is going for sure one day to surpass the shitty btc. Btc is nothing but an empty token, worth nothing, eth is a real platform with a real important purpose.

Personally I think the chances that happens this year is in between 1-5% chance that happens. And on top of that if it happens I think it will only be a brief flip of the top two spots and bitcoin will take back the number one spot in no time 8).

ETH blockchain system is more advanced and efficient ( in my knowledge )  so the transaction fees will remain low .

ETH will never have a chance at all to go beyond BTC. because bitcoin is the head of all altcoin and can never be exceeded by all altcoin. another altcoin may exceed ETH but ETH will remain in the lower position of BTC

No chances for ethereum to surpass the bitcoin if you just look at the price gap even if we say that bitcoin is still crash nowadays bitcoin will not surpass any of those alts that be force to bitcoin down. History still history nothing can ever be improved or change even in the next few years in the world of cryptocurrencies.

I think that ETH has very few chances to outrun bitcoin. But I think that there is a chance. Bitcoin is the father of all the crypto currency. He will always be ahead!

Update: Since my initial post ETH has went from 0.09 ETH/BTC to 0.116, a >25% gain in a couple of weeks. It is now at 66% of its market cap. In early December it was 20%. How many people still believe it's impossible? I know cryptos are volatile, and things can widely swing in other direction, but ETH is evidently in a bull run.

It looks like it was pulled back again losing some dollars per Ethereum.
Now at 0.1048 bitcoin per Ethereum.
But this is still near unlike before with just .035 bitcoin per eth.
This could be a huge change for traders and also a success for those who invested their money thru ethereum.
Damn, I hope I stayed there too.

I think that Efirium has a good chance of getting around Bitcoin - but that's as long as the Etherium is the right coin for investors. Bitcoin is still the main crypto currency, and the Etherium ??? For example, at the moment, many investors are already using the NEO for their own purposes, since the Etherium has already become a rather expensive coin.

20% chance that this happens this year and the best chance it has at doing that would be right around the corner as BTC is hurting right now.

In comparsion of ETH and BTC, my point that Ethereum still over 1000 and I think that it is good point that ETH doesn't lose price like Bitcoin and some other alt coins.

In this battle I'll vote for Ethereum. It's very simple. Bitcoin is very outdated technologically, the cost is hype and fame. Overall it is a bubble and we can see how it is broken now. The air has a quicker transaction and he provided the best technologically.

I think this can happen in the next month, but it will not remain forever,capitalization of bitcoin will outperform any of the currently existing coins!

I have talked about this many times, but the outcome will not change. The etherum is also very popular and it is a coin that makes a profit in the short term, but bitcoin will never lose its number one place in this market.

More projects based on the ethereum platform as well emerging of Dapps leads to growth. Right now the mutual growth is taking place. This has been taking place by the time of drop as well. Bitcoin won't be overtaken by ethereum in terms of value, because when Eth grows surely bitcoin will be growing at least a level higher.

Once Eth became widely adopted as a trading pair I stopped adding to my btc and I'm just holding the btc I have. Eth is what I'm accumulating through trades now.

It can really happen when bitcoin's price fail most of the investors are going to switch to ethereum because it has more stable price from the past months and it has faster tx confirmation that bitcoin.Most of the big players are manipulating the market using bitcoin's market,and that only means its popularity has gone to wild,for a common people who doesnt know how the market works they will just buy bitcoin not knowing they could lose a lot in an instant,that is why i prefer ethereum over bitcoin.

chances are very small because ethereum is very different from bitcoin. bitcoin has a good position and a big selling market over other coins, ethererum can only be below the bitcoin position and can not yet exceed ethereum.

Well said. I also think that you can look at circulating supply of Bitcoin and Ethereum. There is no limit for Ethereum. That has to mean something in long term looking(5,10 years). I've noticed that Etherum is growing more frequently then Bitcoin(jan 2018.). If there is growth of Bitcoin for 4 %,Ethereum is doubling his growth. It can be possible and resonable to think that it might surpass bitcoin in the future. But that is only my opinion. After all Bitcoin will always be the "first"

Ethereum has more chances to replace bitcoin than any shitcoins out there,it has a good platform where the smart contracts are created and the community is solid like what bitcoin has,plus it is matured enough and has faster transaction confirmations than bitcoin also it has lesser fee than bitcoin.If there is only one coin that could replace bitcoin it isnt bitcoin cash its ethereum!

This could be possible since a lot of good altcoins are offering great services too but I think bitcoin will not allow that to happen. Bitcoin will continue to improve its system and it will get faster than before, though ETH is another option I would say that better to have this both and enjoy your profit soon.

It's easy to see that existing altcoins are using the Blockchain 2.0 technology platform, which Ethereum owns. Yes ETH can not surpass BTC. BTC is climbing the ladder in the market , it is showing it seniority over eth. No way bitcoin can loss it's number one position in the market.

Ethereum will not exceed Bitcoin in a short time. Bitcoin can be said KINGS in the world of crypto and Ethereum is king of Altcoin. Seeing the difference in current selling price alone is very far away. Therefore Ethereum can not possibly surpass Bitcoin.

In my opinion, it is a really low chance. I think ethereum is the best altcoin, but despite that, it has a very long way to go. Bitcoin is still have an amazing market cap which is almost double of the ethereum's cap.

It's hard to say that Ether could have a chance to surpass bitcoin. In what I observed when bitcoin falls down almost all of the other  crypt drag down. Let's observe what will be the end market price of BTC and ETh this year then we could conclude well.

I think this is impossible because its value is too low for Bitcoin. Although the value of Bitcoin is falling sharply, ETH is also falling. So in the near future, it is hard to beat Bitcoin, it is still the leading currency

In my opinion Ethereum can be bigger than Bitcoin in the future because Ethereum was given many more benefits to the cryptocurrency community The feature of Ethereum also more unique than Bitcoin. Beside that the founder of ETH Vitalik Buterin look very active to promote the advantages of Ethereum platform in many country. Bitcoin and Ethereum are designed for different fields of activity, and they are the best, at the moment, in their direction. And my opinion is that they will live all the time while there is a cryptocurrency and no one will put them forward from the forefront, because Bitcoin is the beginning of the history of digital money in cryptography, it is the Foundation for absolutely all cryptocurrencies that already exist and that will be, but Ethereum gave a new development in the digital world of money!

Its not going to be an easy thing, and even if it was to happen it wont happen now, BTC has been there longer than ETH and is  more established with a stronger market base making BTC way more valuable and out of ETH's reach

It is better to invest in Ethereum than to invest in bitcoin since many amateur investors are now investing in bitcoin and when an investor is not sure of the real value of the product the market value of the product will always fluctuate this implies that we may predict a whole lot of future fluctuation in the price of bitcoin.

Ethereum does one thing that its competitor bitcoin does not, that is that Ethereum supports many of the altcoins so as those altcoins increase in value so does the value of the ethereum as that is a reflection of its total valuation as you may see that in the time coming ethereum is supporting more altcoins than bitcoin.

The ethereum has a very good chance. If this year Vitalik Buterin and his team have achieved all that they have planned, then the capitalization of the ethereum can grow several times by the end of this year.

I think Ethereum has all chances to overtake Bitcoin. Vitalik Buterin and his team are strong. So many companies use Ethereum like platform for ICO. Ethereum does serious work! On the contrary Bitcoin used only for speculation and nothing else
