Title: Merit system working? Really!
Post by: mdayonliner on February 03, 2018, 09:14:16 AM
I'm finding it really hard to explain. This merit system seems like not working for me. I bet for all these new members as well.

These are some of the reasons making me very frustrated about this merit system...
# I am a low ranked members when I find any post worth reading I feel to give some credit to that person. Now since I do not have any sMerits to give so I can not encourage that person even-though I want to.

# I do post a lot coz I believe contributing to any community build up the community strong. But look at my account I don't have much appreciation from the  higher ranked people who has a lot of merits to help me. I am not blaming them not to give me. May be they are not seeing my post. Do you think most of them have all the day to look for good post to merit other?

# I noticed when a high ranked member post anything then he get merits from other the psychology behind this (I guess) ... if I give merit to someone who had a lot of sMerit then he may give me some merit.

There are more but at the moment the above came in my mind.

Explain me why this post got so many sMerits https://prnt.sc/i9i0tu  where my post got this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2858083.0 (this when I am posting https://prnt.sc/i9i19c )

Go through my posts and comments on my profile then you might see my contribution to this community.

I can bring you bunches of example to prove my statements. Ask me if you want to.

PS: Guess what there will be a lot of low ranked members who will really like this post but they can not give me any merit for this post since day do not have any. Consider this as a proof of my first statement  :-\

Then why not apply to become a merit source?

You're right about high rank member easily to get merit with simple post, just like that they gathering together as a group and cross sending merit.

Always support the strong , give merit to the legendary , hero member. You have to impress them. I think weak account will suffer like this.

I don't know how many years will need to get one merit. May be you are better to get those 6. But I have seen many account getting merit for nothing (strong account)

Like it quoted "yes absolutely right " - get merited for this line. I have written 600 word article but none have given me that one merit.

I am just fade up of the system. I know you will give suggestion to write good article. And I will say thank you, I will try.

I do not think there is a way to become a merit source or I would.

I think some people award merit just to avoid the responsibilitty of awarding merit. They may dump it into the old boys network, or they may give it to the soup kitchens, or run the merit food banks for new members to curry favour with the community.

I did look at the first page of your posts, but, I'm sorry, I didn't give you any merit. This was because some of the posts related to ICOs, and I don't understand ICOs at the moment. The others were what I call " filler posts", these are useful to the board, but, with only a limited supply of sMerit, I'm trying to award them to posters who make unique points.

So yes you are saying the merit system is not working. For some it does not have any meaning but for some it is really really important and you are dumping it in the soup kitchens.  ::)

I did look at the first page of your posts, but, I'm sorry, I didn't give you any merit.

You do not need to be sorry. You have your right to make decision. You are doing fine I have seen some of your post. My complain is not for people like you my complain is for those who are dumping their merits in the soup kitchens. And unfortunately I guess the number is large for them

It is really hard to be appreciated by someone but dont be frustrated about it and think of it as a motivation to improve more.
And bear in mind that this merit system is only new it is not even a month old. But i think thay in the future we will be able to adopt in this system and eventually the Merit will regulate more properly.

Then why not apply to become a merit source?
To become merit source you need atleast a high rank member with HUGE contribution here in forum.

I gave you one of my sMerit because I though your reply was concise and relevant. I nearly didn't because I thought some members will say that I only did it because of your comments about me. I guess some of the comments by the charity workers here are starting to get to me. :)

You don’t think theymos was being serious when he wrote the following?

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.
Or might it be that you’ve been so busy complaining about the merit concept that you haven’t had time to read up on how it’s supposed to work? :)

Agree that not all our post will be appreciated by many people even we did our best to make our post more constructive they only give merits for the most and best post in every thread. That is why many users always concern about this things but this is already implemented we only need to do is to follow because moderators finding a way to make this forum will be in good standing than other forum.

This is what I am expecting too. :-)

I m not even trading from last few days

If you post without much thought being put into it, you won't get merited. That's simple.

It's very hard to get merits in alt coin forums because this is a Bitcoin forum and not some alt-coin forum. It's up to an individual's personal discretion to decide what to merit and what not to. I can assure you that most of us won't merit those that are clearly shitposting.

Unfortunately, you're right; I don't have time to go through your post. I'd love to show you all the posts that aren't merit-worthy though.

Do you think I have it? It all down to not having enough rank. Come on mate look how many post I made.... Over 200!!!! I am a member since not even a month. I can guarantee you that you will not find much creepy posts from me. (yes may be there will be some here and there but most of them are way better than others.)

Please do not question me about what I have not done. I am doing a lot for this forum since I have been introduced to it.

I also tend to give merit to the first good answer to a question, mainly because it takes knowledge and dedication to answer on the spot.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you. But it still seems to me that you’re not giving the merit system much benefit of doubt. I’m certainly going to apply as soon as I have a good enough list of posts to present.

And in any case, we’re all allowed to use this very useful forum for free. Everyone can read and everyone can post. That’s actually all that’s needed to usefully participate here, no? Of course it’s also nice to rank up and be able to give out merits, but are those things really important enough to warrant all the complaining we’ve seen here this week (I don’t mean you, but in general)?

Thank you very much. You have no idea how much motivation you just sent me. Honestly speaking A part of me is saying this is injustice. I am giving so much time to this community and in return they are evaluating me as a low ranked member. Just because I do not have merits (decision of individual most of the time they do not care) I can not see myself as a higher ranked member.

It's ok mate. I am just too much over me today. I do support this merit system, I did talk in it's favour (see few of my post from my profile) but seems like merit system is really not working well especially for the new members who need it to rank up.

Let me ask you what are you here for anyway? If you are only here to read, post and contribute to the community do not mind the new merit system since you will rank up eventually when your merits have accumulated. Don't think of it as injustice, to motivate yourself, just think of it as a challenge because by the time you get into higher ranks, you can call yourself worthy to be in that rank since by that time you have contributed a lot of useful post to the community.

The merrit system can work out to give a general idea how much people find a post merrit worthy.

I see alot of complains about people who are blaming others for giving merrit to posts that doesnt deserve it in there opinion.
The posts i find usefull or informative is for someone else maybe bullshit but yeah thats what it is.

Where the oldies in this forum are not easily impressed by any post the newer members are and if they can they will giving out merrit much easier.
The same for this example,  your a die hard miner that is a newbie inn the collectibles section.

Maybe it would have a better start if only the staff started as merrit source and the staff members from a section would pick merrit sources.

You got 8 merit points as shown in profile. You should have got 4 sMerits for that. You will keep getting more as your quality posts are appreciated.

# I do post a lot coz I believe contributing to any community build up the community strong. But look at my account I don't have much appreciation from the  higher ranked people who has a lot of merits to help me. I am not blaming them not to give me. May be they are not seeing my post. Some of your quality posts may remain unnoticed. But, if you are a deserving person, you will get noticed sooner or later. There are some members giving away merit points for quality points. Quote your posts there for more exposure.

You're right about the higher ranks getting more merit. Though we post even more efficient post, we don't get enough of that merit, as if our posts are useless or senseless. I liked the idea of merit at first because the spammers and shit posters will lessen but somehow, it doesn't work for me anymore. But whatever the site wants then we should comply.

We should not forget the main reason we are in this forum - Learn and assist others. The merit thing seems to make us forget the fact that we are here to develop ourselves personally and help others in our little way. Merit or no merit, do your best for the community.
Yes the original goal is a thing to be respected. Without appreciation then we must keep contributing. But I think when there is an appreciation then we can be motivated to make a much better contribution. We all know that everyone has the qualities to get the best. Merit is growing and now everything is starting to go to a much better thing. We all have to race to give the best and we are part of technological advancements in Bitcoin world.

I agree with you its not easy to get smerits all you need to do is effort before you can get it . just like me I'm hoping someday that I can get it 😇😇😇

It is good to think positive but you have to take action accordingly as well. Only hoping will not get you merit points.

I'm new here . Can someone show me the merit system earlier look like ? And for now , which element do I need when writing post/comment to get merits ? English is not my native language , so it's a little bit harder to write a quality post/comment .

Earlier there were no merit system. To get idea about Merit please go through this post. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.0

with the existence of this merit system everyone will be competing to make post useful and useful for others, not only copy paste belonging to others all good posts will be given a merit gift.

I am not forgetting this fact of developing personally and helping others, learning and assisting. I know what should be my role and I am doing my best. If you go through my profile and posts then it should be clear. Do you think I am posting shitpost?

For me this forum is to hangout with the community and yes of-course get some personal benefits as well. A better rank give me better benefit. Don't you think having a better rank is helping you to do some bounty work (like this https://prnt.sc/i9kt0z ) here or whatever you expect to get benefit from?

People still need more time to get used to with this merit system and also people who are higher ranked they need some responsibilities for the new members.

Anyway I have got the solution. We don't have to worry about the merit system. Just have to keep posting quality content. May be we will catch the sight one day. It is for sure. May be you could get merit for other posting you are not expecting. Hopefully our senior will be more generous and kind to give merit point. Keep posting. We love this forum. We can't live without it.

Agree! Dont pay too much attention on merit scores. Keep doing the right things, in the case is writing high quality posts. Of course, we can not sure that how many posts will receive merits for 100 posts. I guess somewhere around 10% (a little bit lower or higher), but it doesn't matter.

Posting good threads, reading around the forum and help other users with your knowledge, skills, etc. ; then good things will come (merits & smerits).
You can post earlier today and get merits later in the next some days.

I'm finding it really hard to explain. This merit system seems like not working for me. I bet for all these new members as well.

You can't expect it to work right of the bat, this system just requires  a little time to get into bitcoin and then start posting. Ranking up in off-topic is out now.

These are some of the reasons making me very frustrated about this merit system...
# I am a low ranked members when I find any post worth reading I feel to give some credit to that person. Now since I do not have any sMerits to give so I can not encourage that person even-though I want to.

That may be true, but there will probably be some other person that finds it worth to be given merit.

# I noticed when a high ranked member post anything then he get merits from other the psychology behind this (I guess) ... if I give merit to someone who had a lot of sMerit then he may give me some merit.

That also may be the case, where people don't find it worth to merit low ranked users, but also higher ranks know what they're talking about, new member (probably) not so much, but even if you're a new member and know what you're talking about, you'll be given merit.

Go through my posts and comments on my profile then you might see my contribution to this community.

I can bring you bunches of example to prove my statements. Ask me if you want to.

I don't know but just only giving your opinion on something can't be in the same bracket as some other posts. E.g. :

Quote
bitcoin compared to the current price of gold is really very different, bitcoin price reached nearly $ 13k times more than the current price.

and

Quote
Bitcoin is more profitable indeed, but it is equally risky compared to Gold where prices hover on relatively the same levels and sometimes would even rise higher depending on situations around the world. Bitcoin may make you rich, but the already rich use Gold for safety..

Both giving their own opinion but still quite different. Don't get me wrong, but the post doesn't need to be 1000 characters long to be considered a "good" post. Just listen to Sam Hyde's 2070 Paradigm Shift on youtube, it's over 15mins long and is just a long shitpost.

Same is happening with me. I didn't really got the point yet that how or on which algorithm the merit system is working. It seems static for me since it is applied by btc forum team. Really irritated myself.

Well if you take a look at your last 6 post, they not the posts to receive merit for. I don't consider myself of a excellent turbo good quality poster, but i do believe that you can compare your posts with some higher rank member and see what I'm talking about. Tho I like your sentence "It's risky to invest in ICO because it's too risky."

So far Merit system is not what i thought it would be. At first i thought it would be good for forum and that it will decrease shitposting, but as time pass by i see everything is the same. High ranks support one another, and in the mean time low ranks are suffering because of that. I do not see many Merit points given to low ranks, and some of those posts are pretty good and useful.
It seams to me that high ranks would consider some post high quality only if its written with fancy words and only if it sounds smart. So i guess that to them if post is simple and useful, it still doesn't belong to high quality posts... And i do not want to start writing about those posts that get too much Merits just because they are legendary, like that "HOLDE" post or what every.
Maybe i am wrong, but time will tell if this Merit system is good or bad. I guess that at least few month needs to pass before i can say for sure.

You son, are a Pajeet. Your post history shows you can barely speak English, you just type extremely long sentences in stupid topics just for sig campaign earnings. I suggest you find a real job, as you are not going to find merits here.  Good luck!

As for you, you are another Pajeet. Find a real job. There is no "algorithm", you are clearly no devcracker... ::) I suggest finding a real job, as you won't make many satoshi or merits here until you start improving your post quality and learn English.  Good luck!

I would love to respond your opinions.

1. Merit did decrease shitposting, even though the results were not great (at least for this moment), but I can say that in my local board, one-liner post, paraphrased post, is decreasing each day.

2. High-ranks supporting high-ranks, and low ranks were suffering? Well yeah, that might be true if all they did was posting low-quality post. In my local boards, even a newbie can get merit points if they did post a good post. I and some other members created a new thread for reviewing their post. Legendary, Hero, Sr. Member, all take part in it, which is good, isn't it?

You can also see that many high-ranked members are offering the smerit-post review on the services board. bill gathor, questions authority, and etc.

3. Does quality post need to be in fancy words and only if it "sounds" smart?
Nah, nope. I can give you examples if you wanted too.

Personally, I dont want to offend your thread, but I have spent a couple of mins to look at your recent posts. I think that those posts don't deserve to get Merits. It is due to the fact that there is some problem related to the initial purpose of those ones, which can not help other users in the forum to solve their problems. It seems that you tried writing higher-quality posts than before merit system launched, but it doesn't high quality enough.

My advices for you are:
1) You should keep trying, posting as helpful threads as possible. Keep doing this way, then Merits and sMerits will be sent to your account by other users (might be from the one you help, or might be from higher-ranked users who simply like your posts and want to motivate you).

2) Most importantly, that is the way bitcointalk forum (community-driven one) operates. Everyone help each other, help free (by now, from helping others we can get sMerit & merits, but don't pay attention to those rewards, simply help)

Best regards,

Yeah, just post something that has sense and is worthy of the stakes whichever campaign you're in. The forum has rules and so we have to obey.

Hopefully this will happen that our senior members here in forum who insight those quality post and give smerit into lower rank. Newbie to Full Member should not have smerit to give only Sr. Member to Legendary who was allowed to give smerit and that case maybe it reduced from abusing smerit or those have alt accounts.

PS. Correct me if i wrong but that is only suggestion of mine. 8)

Posting something that makes sense is not good enough. People should be on this forum because they want to learn and share that knowledge, not because of signature campaigns. You can look on sig. campaign as a reward for your posts. And yes, we should all follow forum rules.

I have realized all of this after harsh truth in owlcatz and joniboini posts (which are few posts above). Low quality posts are the problem that needs to be dealt with, and when we do that High quality posts will stand out even more. Also when our posts reach satisfying quality, Merits will start coming.

As I can see right now, only posts with good content gets merit. I think posts that has sense and is actually efficient and gets the merit because the operator deserves it. And also I am not looking forward only for the stakes of the campaign, like what you said, they're rewards given to you. Low quality posts and spam are exactly in my opinion is the reason why we have merits. And yes, they have to be dealt with and make posts that are actually legitimate.

I guess we should wait and give some time for people to adapt and become comfortable with this system.I feel your pain but you are not the only one, even a full member like me is worried how in the world are they going to rank up,i need 150 merits to rank up!!!.
I had dreams to become a legendary member in this forum, but those sweet dreams of mine have been shattered.NOT totally though but it may require double the time now.

Why do you need to rank up?  The merit system was created to benefit those who want to talk bitcoin, not those that want to advance their rank....

This thing is what I really concern of. I'm not bragging or uplifting my self esteem but I can say that I am a good quality poster here in the forum. I always do my very best in conveying my ideas and never ever tried to do shitposts at all. But in return, I only got 1 merit and take note it took so long to have it. It seems that my effort is not appreciated by others but I'm not blaming them because I understand that maybe they don't have a merit to give, they conserve their merits or they are choosy etc., I just feel sad about it.

Just an advice for those good posters who have this same situation, continue your good deeds and stop complaining because it will help nothing. Blessings will come to us at the right time, be patient. :)

I have one advice for you. Stay away from shit threads and topics. Because even if you make good quality posts, they will be swarmed by shitposts. Instead find some good thread and try to help someone that needs help. That way your posts will be noticed and you will start getting Merits. Cheers!

I am here supporting the Merit system with sincerity of purpose based on the primary objective with which the system is originated to achieve. Even if I'm not saying this or in any manner trying to woo merit to myself, my fair is that will this system at the long run be just, fair , build goodwill and better atmosphere for all members in this forum? It shall go well with everyone of us if it is actually bringing sanity to the forum posts and not to over ride but to be encouraged junior members in the forum. Thanks.
