Title: Someone hacked my wallet.
Post by: sublime5447 on September 28, 2013, 02:07:04 AM
Not that any body around here gives a fuck and I am sure that its my fucking fault so you can save you fucking comments.

This was it for me. I am gonna forget about fucking coins.

I had a strong password so must have been a key logger.

Well you should care if you do any kind of banking online/ebay selling/etc. If you need help let me know. I understand you are upset about this right now so maybe tomorrow would be a better time, either way you really should take care of it.

I've read your posts lately and agree with you for the most part. There is no REAL reason to adopt bitcoin to the masses. They can't pay their bills, buy food for the most part, and mostly bitcoin would be nothing without usd/euro/etc to convert to.

Bitcoin has so much potential and meaning behind it, but without a true need to fully adopt bitcoin and use it as a currency and not a commodity it will never succeed fully. Without it being regulated there will always been schemers roaming without consequences.

Sounds like a hassle. Someone else can worry about it. It is their job to protect my accounts if someone steals it is their job to get the money back to me. I am a user it is for tech nerds to prevent this shit from happening. I dont care and I shouldnt have to care. I hate tech shit this is my dads company http://www.norlinx.com/ he is a computer engineer that writes software to manage data centers. He tortured me with programming when I was a kid. I dont like it and couldnt care less about it. I am a user i dont care about the details. I put my efforts in other places.

Next thing you know your email will be hacked and all your contacts will be sent an email saying you are in trouble in a foreign country and need money.  Happened to a coworker of mine.

How else can a key logger gain access without having you download something? Maybe the porn is related to this. Prob a good idea to hold back on your urges.

When it comes to computers yes I represent represent the majority, and the minority in almost every other aspect of life. Your solution of keeping two computers is such a tech guy answer. Every time I deal with tech guys I tell them what I want to do and they tell me why it cant happen. Like I want 2 cell phones with the same number and the guys at best buy just want to tell me why it cant happen.

Your solution and the typical answers around here are always such bullshit. I say what I want and you tell me that i need to have 2 separate computers. That is not an acceptable answer. It is always that i should switch around my behavior to accommodate the system.

I dont know if you get my point? but like when my customers tell me what they want i ask how can I accommodate. When i ask tech guys can i do this or that it is always that I need to accommodate them or I need to change my behavior. Have you guys never heard the customer is always right? i swear I dont think that guys in the tech field get that concept.

I dont want to hear why it cant happen. In my business i say how can it happen or how can I satisfy this person. When it comes tech shit is always you cant get what you want and you need to change your wants or behavior.

It wouldnt be hard to fix this problem. PP doesn't let me send if it is not from my IP address. They say hold on this is not normal what is going on? Blockchain can do the same thing. I have never logged in from a different IP address yet some hacker half way around the world I am sure logs in and there is no questions asked.

It isnt how can we change to fix the problems or how can we give the customer what they want it is always you need to know more or do more.

Oh all i need to do is go get a second computer? Is that all? Get real.

I know i am being a bit of a dick here, but every time I see someone getting robbed it is their fault. There is nothing wrong with the system no changes need to be implemented there is nothing to fix because the problem isnt the way that it works but my ignorance or my behavior.

PayPal does. I've accidentally used Paypal while using a VPN in a totally different country and made payments fine, without any additional hoops to jump through. The difference is that merchants take on the cost of chargebacks, whereas in Bitcoin the user takes the losses.

What do you expect? The only way to protect against cyber theft are physical barriers, most commonly implemented as independent lines of communications, which require two (physical) devices. You can't eat the turkey and be a vegetarian...

I didn't mean to offend you but to answer your question, No I am not out of my mind. I don't think it's a bad thing to not look at porn online if you can't keep to one site you know is safe and legit. The issue with porn online is people will good something and just go crazy clicking links trying to rub one off. Be smart about it if you have money turning up missing.

For the record I don't think it's your fault some asshat feels the need to steal. The worst part about it is, the thief could probably earn more with his/her computer knowledge than the amount of bitcoins they stole.

Like you should lock your car when leave it to go for shopping you should also secure your wallet. You're used to having to lock your car and not complain that you have to "accommodate the system" or are you leaving the windows open and expecting the car to think for you?

Start a new wallet on a different and secure computer and have 2FA enabled (Google authenticator if you have a smartphone, a Yubikey or via SMS codes). You haven't mentioned it anywhere so I am assuming you weren't using it. Big mistake, especially when you are using an insecure, malware-riddled machine for your financial-related stuff.

Ya like I said it is my fault

I have been buying and selling bitcoin for a year now I still have no idea what a Yubikey is and it took me about 8 months before I knew what was meant by 2FA I love how you guys run around saying that shit it means nothing!

I'm going to agree here. Like I said earlier, it's not your fault people steal. You did offer the community a good service and unfortunately the inevitable happened and you were hit for enough to set you off the edge. If nothing else just learn from what happened and try to avoid these situations in the future. Not like anything I am saying you don't know already...

Altering one's own behaviour or way of thinking is necessary in all fields, it's part of the learning process. No one seems to complain (too much) when they are learning to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission and are having problems with driving smoothly. They have to . People who move abroad are not surprised if they have to learn the foreign language if they want to have more opportunities.

You can spend some time to learn about the *basics* of IT security and about keeping your bitcoin money secure or you can keep getting hacked.

You don't have to use a Yubikey — I myself am not using one. You can use your phone and receive SMS messages as an additional measure of authentication while logging in. If for some reason your number/network/country doesn't work with blockchain.info, use google authenticator (your phone must be a smartphone for that though).

I am curious about the security on your blockchain.info wallet, mainly because I myself have one.

You say you had a strong password, but how strong. How many digits? Upper and lowercase letters? Numbers and symbols?

Do you have 2 step-authentication? If so what kind? SMS, Yubi, email, or GAuth?

Do you have a secondary password?

Do you have an email on your wallet? If so, did you get an email concerning the login attempt?

Do you have logging enabled? If so, does it list any events?

The nature of analogies makes it difficult to say whether or not one is valid while another is not. So without discounting the validity of your own analogy, allow me to provide you with another automotive analogy.

Say someone brings you a car with an engine that is completely fucked; bearings are spun, rods are thrown, head gasket is blown, etc. (They had to tow this car in.) You ask them, "when is the last time you had the oil changed?" They give you a confused look and say, "I don't know what that means."

My point is, while it may not be your fault that your coins got stolen, (you could say it was the thief's fault, but there will be thieves as long as there is anything of value to steal) you are the only one who could've prevented it. Blockchain.info provides several methods to secure your account (even ones to combat keyloggers), and while it's true they could've walked you through their use and purpose, in the end it's up to you to properly utilize them.

Now if you're saying you did use said methods to secure your account, and they all failed or proceed ineffective, this should be brought to the attention of Blockchain.info and the bitcoin community so that they can be rectified or improved upon.

The problem with your line of reasoning is the bold statements... No one has to use bitcoin they have options. If you want to drive a manual car you have to go and practice but they have options too they can drive an automatic it is a matter of preference. For bitcoin to work it has to be better than what is already in place. I can cut down a tree with a hand saw but why would I if I have access to a chain saw? PP lets me send money any where in the world for free and offers protection and liquidity between currencies. Paypal is a chain saw so why would I choose to use the hand saw of bitcoin? You want me to bend over backward to use bitcoin but I have better options so I will just opt out.

Blockchain.info is the standard bearer of bitcoin. I have never been prompted to add another line of defense to secure my wallet. Honestly I just use blockchain as a checking account and almost never store coins there. It is not worth my time to worry about hackers to make bitcoin safe that is not my job. It is a service that I can just choose not to use.

Like I dont care that I got hacked because the service providers that I chose to use value my participation and protect me . They accommodate my behavior.

You think that I am blessed with bitcoins presence when in actuality it is me that graces bitcoin with my participation. It is people that matter. Bitcoin doesnt magically produce worth it has worth because PEOPLE value it and if the service that bitcoin provides is a hand saw and they have access to a chain saw they will choose not to value it.

I am a master auto tech. It is like me saying oh your car is messed up and it is your fault you were running an inefficient stoichiometric ratio and now your values are burnt and your catalyst system is destroyed. You should of checked that BIG MISTAKE!

People pay, usually large amounts of money, for "master auto techs" to diagnose and fix their vehicles. People also have to trust that the "master auto tech" is competent and isn't ripping them off. Typically though, people are getting ripped off. I do all (most, I don't have certain tools) of my own work on my vehicles, so I know all about the price difference between fixing it yourself and having a shop fix it.

Bitcoin doesn't really have the equivalent of "master auto techs" yet (well... I don't know of anyone who will come to your home and set up a secure wallet for you). So, you must learn to do it yourself or face the consequences.

Now, If you want to pay me $100 an hour (plus traveling expenses), I'll secure your wallets for you. I don't consider myself a "master wallet tech", but I've been securing my own wallet for over two years now. You are going to have to trust that I won't rip you off though. (Paying me $100 an hour to secure your wallet is a rip off because it's really quite easy to do. I'm also going to drag it out over several hours, when it should only take 10 minutes or so. Plus I'm going to have to sell you "specialized" hardware at a 100% mark up.)

See... Bitcoin is a decentralized money system. Its up to the users to protect themselves. You can rant and rage against that fact as much as you want, but that doesn't change anything. Some day in the future we might have services which will protect users who can't protect themselves, but you can be certain that it will cost money.

You don't need to alter your behavior one bit, but you won't secure your bitcoins with that attitude. You alter your behavior every day in order to function in society, do you whine about that too? Do you whine about stop signs slowing you down when you are driving somewhere? Do you whine about needing to put gas in your car so that you don't run out of fuel. Do you whine about having to pay taxes so you don't get locked up in prison? Do you whine about needing to prepare food so that you don't stave to death?

If you want secure bitcoins, you have to take the proper steps.

If you want to learn how to secure your wallets, I will teach you how for free. But you are going to have to purchase a cheap netbook, because that is the method I use (Armory). I use it because I consider it the most convenient and secure method, even though it has the added cost of an air gapped computer. If you are going to whine about having to spend money to protect your assets, then you are hopeless.

There are other ways to secure your wallets which do not have the added cost of an air gapped computer (offline paper wallets), but I have not familiarized myself with them, so I can't teach you for free.

The auto shop statement is not true most people are not getting ripped off at all you are not taking into account the enormous over head of providing a service center and complying with government regulations or the cost of having on  demand service they have to pay the techs to show up even if there are no cars to work on , but that is neither here nor there just a pet peeve of mine.

It is not my job to make it safe if bitcoin wants the participation of people it has to offer a better alternative. It has to be a chain saw and not a hand saw.

What do you have against learning? It's one of the greatest joys in life. It enables you to do shit.

If you go on demanding that the world change to suit your current level of understanding or lack thereof, it's going to be pure butthurt from here on out.

I am a master auto tech. It is like me saying oh your car is messed up and it is your fault you were running an inefficient stoichiometric ratio and now your values are burnt and your catalyst system is destroyed. You should of checked that BIG MISTAKE!

Right if you want to have a car that runs you have to change the oil periodically, but if you had the option of owning a car that never had to have the oil changed with no additional cost then no one would own a car requiring oil changes you are asking me to value a car that has to have the oil changed when there are cars out there that dont

If you don't value your bitcoins, then why the rant when they were stolen from you?

That was the last bit that I had I ordered from coinbase 7 or 8 days ago (my first time buying from an institution) and over that time period. I decided that i dont value bitcoin.

It cant work, and doesn't have the ability to enable real change. So it is of no use to me.

That is my opinion for now.

It will take a major innovation to change that situation, I will watch and go back to working on the liberty campaign, more than likely supporting Rand Paul in his presidential run. Though I dont believe that has much promise either I dont think that the ballot box is capable of creating real change. As we get closer to the collapse of the global financial system I may get back involved just to help people have an alternative to state issued fiat.

Ya it not the BTC that I care about it is the 182 USD that I would have got selling it.

First: commas

Second: electric cars

Third: You speak as if bitcoins are exactly the same as conventional currency, but without all the protection that conventional currency provides. That is simply not true, just ask someone from Cyprus. There are advantages and disadvantages to both conventional currencies and crypto-currencies.

You act as if what happened to you would have been impossible with normal currency which couldn't be further from the truth. If you were holding cash on your person, someone could come up and mug you and take your money, and it would be equally untraceable. Likewise, if you were holding your funds in a bank, the bank and/or the government could take your money. Although highly unlikely, it has happened in this country and others. However unlike conventional currency, with bitcoin there are steps you can take to absolutely secure your funds. So that there is nothing anyone could do ever to take them away from you, short of destroying the internet.

Instead of trolling, can we try to figure out what exactly happened? Is there a vulnerability in blockchain.info? This has been happening a lot lately.

This is my gut reaction. It seems this is starting to appear more often with blockchain. Has anyone tried getting a response from support about this?

OP do you feel you did something wrong and may have infected your computer or could this possible be an exploit in the blockchain client? I know you mentioned a shady site you visited, have any more information on that?

I tried that here, clearly expressing my concern.

He didn't reply to any of those questions, but he did take to time to reply to my analogy, wrongfully telling me that cars that don't require oil changes don't exist.

I don't expect to glean any useful information from this guy; it seems like all that he wants to do is complain about bitcoins and the horrendous travesty that has so unjustly befallen him.

1. 14 characters capital and lowercase and numbers

2. No

3. No didnt know that was an option but dont see where it would have made a difference

4. No

5. No dont know what it is

"just ask someone from Cyprus." The people of cyprus bought in near the height of the the bubble they would have been better off taking the hit on their fiat. I dont think may would have anything positive to say, but maybe they where happy to buy in at 180 and watch it crash back down to 60?

"wrongfully telling me that cars that don't require oil changes don't exist." Never seen an engine that didnt require oil

"First: commas" ya I dont do grammar

"Second: electric cars"  I said that dint incur any extra cost. They have the added cost of replacing the battery array among other cost.

"That's wrong, it's your money, and it's your own responsibility to protect your coins." every other institution that serves as my bank protects my funds I see no reason why bitcoin should be any different

"something neither of the Pauls will ever be able to do." They already have made a large difference but Yes I agree.

"are you quitting bitcoin"   Yes

"If so, sell your coins or give them away"    Final Balance   0.004 BTC   you can have the .04 if you want it

"Is there a vulnerability in blockchain.info?" I wouldnt be at all surprised if there where

"I know you mentioned a shady site you visited, have any more information on that?" Ya I am watching movies but will look back and post here later

"horrendous travesty that has so unjustly befallen him." I actually havent made a big deal at all about it.

Look i realize you guys are hardcore fans of bitcoin, but I have been buying and selling them for a year and I dont see it working out, maybe that will change. When and if it does I will get back in and will be the first to admit I was wrong.

I just cant in good faith support it, I cant tell people I care about to use it. I want honest money and i dont see anything honest about bitcoin right now.

The reference to Cyprus was concerning those who had money in the bank and had it taken by the government, nothing to do with bitcoins. See here. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=160292)

As for this:

every other institution that serves as my bank protects my funds I see no reason why bitcoin should be any different

I have just shown you an instance where this has not been true for others, in fact the exact opposite was true. Additionally, because of the Great Depression, many older people have a great deal of mistrust for banks. My own father refuses to put any of his money in the bank, and makes use of a bank account only when absolutely necessary.

The secondary password option that Blockchain.info offers is a password that is used when making certain changes to the account, but more importantly, must be entered any time you attempt to send bitcoins. Furthermore, when prompted for the secondary password, an onscreen keyboard comes up which allows you to use the mouse to enter the password. This foils key-loggers that strictly record key presses, but not those that record mouse position and clicks. Both this, as well as any of the two-factor authentication methods would've probably spared you this loss.

I am sorry that you lost your bitcoins, even though it wasn't a huge amount of money, it was still a significant loss. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. From what you've told me it doesn't seem likely that there is a vulnerability in Blockchain.info, or at least none that was in play here. It's probably safe to say you have a key-logger so you should probably take the time to scan your system just to be on the safe side. Even if you're not worried about your bank account or PayPal information because they protect your funds, it may save you the headache of having to go through the process of filing claims and getting your funds recovered. I imagine the reason why Blockchain.info wallets become targeted so frequently is due to the fact that they provide an interface to you wallet that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. If you had used a wallet program such as the Bitcoin-QT client, it would take more than a keylogger to get your coins, unless for some reason you had typed out your private key or copied it to the clipboard.

" onscreen keyboard comes up which allows you to use the mouse to enter the password."   Sounds like that should be the default.

http://bigislandbitcoin.com/  This is one sketch link I said there was only one but I vaguely remember another I will have to do a bit of digging to find it.

I have a QT wallet it is just way out of sync.  I dont save the coins just buy and sell them so I dont normally have a reason to store them for to long. When I get coins I use blockchin then send the coins off to various exchanges then sell them off for usd. i hold usd on the exchange to protect myself from market moves and then when someone contacts me looking for coins I buy them back.

I dont worry about the wallet to much because ordinarily someone would have to be fast to get anything out of there and if I do leave coins it is not more than I can lose.

What do you have against learning? It's one of the greatest joys in life. It enables you to do shit.

If you go on demanding that the world change to suit your current level of understanding or lack thereof, it's going to be pure butthurt from here on out.

Nothing I love learning, but about the things that I value. There are other people to learn about the things that do not interest me

First of all, I'm sorry for what happened.  That sucks, and it was not your fault you had bitcoins stolen from you.  But, there are three parties involved here, and each has their own responsibilities.  The thief is responsible for the theft, blockchain.info is responsible for its website, and you are responsible for management of your funds and whom you entrust them to.

Second, how long did you say you were using bitcoins for?  Why did you use them?  It seems you value(d) them, hence this thread.  So, it's confusing to me why you never learned about Bitcoin, a part of which involves learning how to manage your funds.  Your self-disclosed lack of knowledge indicates to me that you relied on blockchain.info because you didn't even trust yourself to know what you were doing.

Third, blockchain.info is not the "standard bearer" of Bitcoin.  What were you even trying to say in suggesting that?

Fourth, blaming bitcoins themselves is just a logic fail.  You might as well just blame the Internet as a whole because it had about as much to do with this heist as bitcoins did.  Or, blame computers.  You could commit to never using a computer ever again until the "tech guys" figure out how to make a computer that is invincible to all cyber attacks.

1. I understand how the system works and I know my blockchain wallet wasnt super secure. but I created a strong password. Like I said I wasnt to worried about it because I dont use it for storage in fact I never had any use for bitcoin as savings it is a currency and currencies are a poor way to store wealth.

2 I have been involved for a little over a year, I sold coins for paypal on ebay (at first) and facebook (cant say the other uses), I didnt rely on blockchain I know that no site is safe. I valued (past tense) because I thought that it had potential to help defund the government

3. I mean they are the face of bitcoin, they set the price for the most part. ( I mean the market sets the price) but the market is the SR and they use blockchain.info pricing

4. Bitcoin is flawed IMO. This theft is not why I am quieting. The main reason to post was to get the address used to steal out on the internet as linked to a thief. That way if someone searches it they will know that they would be buying stolen coins and to warn others not to deal with the person associated with that address. The problem with bitcoin is that it can not bridge the gap between the conventional banking system and its self. It should have been introduced with a feedback mechanism built in and the option to transact out in the open and anonymously. Those things are having to be built now and it is gonna take a very long time. Until people can use bitcoin as quickly and easily as a debit card it will remain irrelevant.

It works well for illicit purpose as long as there is a feedback mechanism, but will not have wide spread adoption.

My interest lie in other areas of life.

No, they don't set the price whatsoever.  Blockchain.info isn't even an exchange, and if you click "markets" on Blockchain.info you will see that they simply track Bitstamp's API to reflect the current price.  Saying SR "use(s) blockchain.info pricing" is inaccurate, because whose pricing does blockchain.info follow?

The SR isn't the market either.  SR is about as much of an exchange as this forum is, and I can tell you first hand that the market is way bigger than either SR or this forum.

As far as stating that there is some "flaw" with Bitcoin as a result of its "gap" between its self and the conventional banking system, I think you're just letting your recent, bad, personal experience influence your reasoning at this point.  Bitcoin was specifically designed to BE radically different from the conventional banking system, i.e. the gap is entirely intentional.  You do get this, right?  There is a differential gap between Bitcoin and the banking system because Bitcoin was intended to be, well, different.  There are also many "feedback mechanisms" already built into Bitcoin, and as a currency its been used for years to transact out in the open (I've done it many times, and on this very forum).  There are many people who use Bitcoin without transferring in and out of fiat, such as miners who directly use their earnings to purchase goods and services.

My mistake I used poor wording. You are correct, my point is the only real market in bitcoin is the silkroad and they use blockchain price which happens to reflect bitstamp price for now it was mt gox.

So the only real market place with any volume at all uses blockchain.info's price. It is the face of bitcoin.

"transact out in the open" transparent as in with your real world identity associated with it.

"There are also many "feedback mechanisms""  I should be able to rate an address. If people could rate addresses then when some one stole you would know it.
I had a guy a couple weeks ago steal on otc and sell to me here. I do not like buying stolen coins.

For some reason the cell-phone example bugs me. There are sound technical reasons cellphones can't share a phone-number. It sounds like you want the phones to work like the extension lines at your home. This is possible, but you won't like the hoops you have to jump though to get there.

The phone number is used for call routing. If you insist on using the same number for two different phones, you will need to set up out-of-band call routing. The phone companies will likely insist on assigning numbers to those phones regardless (otherwise it will not work, unless you find wifi). What you can do is set up a VOIP gateway at your home and have a VOIP client on your cell-phones. You would then have the VOIP software ring your phone whenever somebody calls your home phone. I have not tried this myself yet; it is possible that cell-phone providers block VOIP. If somebody wants to call your VOIP cell from home, they would need to use a VOIP phone since you refuse to use the assigned phone-number.

It is ridiculous how long have cell phones been around? I want a phone for the shop and a phone for the house. You would think I ask to put a man on the moon. I know it can be done. I dont want to hear the stupid ass excuses for why it cant happen that is garbage.

I would love it if my wife and I both had phones with the same number, I cant be the only one.

Either of you guys see any thing that looks like a key logger a few post up?

Google is a good

Cell phone Companies have been rapping us all for a long time. I personally think they want to force people to have 2 plans and 2 bills. I dont need two bills just 2 phones, i could add as many lines as I wanted when we were hard wired.

I wouldn't say poor, more like confusing. You keep saying market, which most people would assume to mean a bitcoin exchange (see: http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/ (http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/)). However you seem to be using the word to refer to "markets" that accept bitcoin, of which you are correct in that SilkRoad is probably the largest in terms of volume. However Bitmit is also quite large, and they offer several price options for a seller to use when listing items in USD: Bitstamp, Mt.Gox (24-hr and last), and something they call bitcoinaverage which I assume to be a composite figure.

Furthermore, Blockchain.info seems to use the Mt.Gox weighted average, so saying that SilkRoad uses the Blockchain.info price, which in turn uses the Mt.Gox weighted average is a misrepresentation of the facts, even if for some reason SilkRoad actually retrieves their price from the Blockchain.info site.

Bottom line is, you're giving Blockchain.info far too much credit, and by extension too much culpability.

I've never had any dealings with you before, but from what I can tell you seem to be a valued member of the bitcoin community (or at least the bitcointalk.com community), and provide a beneficial service. I realize such a loss can be greatly discouraging, but don't let it drive you away from bitcoin as a whole. From what you have learned if this thread you should be able to prevent this from happening again if you decided to stick with it.

As for the list you posted, all of those items look disconcerting, with the exception of maybe the Ask Toolbar.

A virus scan may help clean up your computer, but no anti-virus software is perfect, and in the end it will be up to your to educate and protect yourself from malicious software, or as someone else suggested relegate different tasks to different devices. From personal experience I can tell you: knowledge is power. I haven't used anti-virus software regularly for the past decade; I download something every so often to scan my computer, but always end up not finding anything. When people ask me what anti-virus software I use, I laugh and say, "I don't download viruses."

Relax brother i dont advocate for regulation by the government, I advocate for the regulation of the market and no one can escape market forces.

Me sitting here saying I am gonna vote with my feet, because the system works poorly is imposing market forces.

Some one will come out with a wallet that allows everyone who uses it to rate wallet address and has a Id verification system and maybe builds a business model that can offer insurance for digital transactions for debit card and credit card and paypal.

But to get rid of institutions like banks or make them to small to care about there has to be a huge trust network someone is gonna have to figure a way for people to import trust into bitcoin.

Ya I need to be saying market place.

Guys this hack and theft are small time. I have had 2 k in charge backs, I am not quitting because of this hack i am quitting because i believe this wont work the way it is currently set up it has to be better than this.

I sold 80k worth of coin all p2p with paypal I know it is a profitable business that can be insured.

There has to be a better system

When I can say hey mom go to this site an get a wallet and know she will be safe and that she will be able to move funds around the internet and can get money into and out of the system easily without going to the bank then I will support it again until then I am out. I already took the bitcoin sticker off my car.

It looks like you want your cake (freedom) and want to eat it too (no responsibility). Life doesn't work like that and neither does Bitcoin. They never will.

Agreed, in order for bitcoin to become what you want it to become sublime, it would have to give up all of its advantages over conventional currency.

When I can say hey mom go to this site an get a wallet and know she will be safe and that she will be able to move funds around the internet and can get money into and out of the system easily without going to the bank then I will support it again until then I am out. If you change that to, "hey mom go to this site and get a wallet and set up two-factor authentication," then she would be safe. SMS or GAuth 2FA would have protected your funds. When the hacker tried to log on to your wallet, it would've either sent a code to your cell phone or required an authentication code to be entered before it would've permitted him access. This goes back to separation of devices since without access to your phone no key-logger in existence would be able to overcome 2FA.

And in addition for removal (not prevention), I recommend HijackThis:

Sublime, you've probably been a victim of a drive-by trojan. If you really want to watch adult content on your computer, just turn off Java and Flash in Chrome or Firefox before fapping.

That exact service may exist some day soon or not-so-soon. It will have fees (visible or hidden). It will also remove the benefits of decentralization. You are going to have to trust that service provider to protect you. You are going to have to comply with the various laws which exist for those types of services. This means you are going to have to trust your government (or the government of the service provider) as well.

Again, due to Bitcoin's decentralized nature, it is up to each user to protect themselves.

In fact, this is true for most things in life, regardless of how many safety nets seem to be in place.

It looks like you want your cake (freedom) and want to eat it too (no responsibility). Life doesn't work like that and neither does Bitcoin. They never will.

"That exact service may exist some day soon or not-so-soon. It will have fees (visible or hidden)."

Not so-soon. Bitcoin has massive hidden fees the extremely high rates of theft and visible mining fees. I can load currency into paypal send it any where in the world for free, but I have to take the risk in that transaction

"or the government of the service provider"

You are talking about the need for escrow that will always exist.

Yes I want my cake and eat it too. I want a currency that i can use anonymously if I choose and if i choose transparently.

I want one that that I can send to people I trust any where in the world where I bear the risk and one where I can be protected

"Again, due to Bitcoin's decentralized nature, it is up to each user to protect themselves."

For now.

"In fact, this is true for most things in life, regardless of how many safety nets seem to be in place."

Absolute security does not exist, but there are acceptable risk and unacceptable ones.

"It looks like you want your cake (freedom) and want to eat it too (no responsibility). Life doesn't work like that and neither does Bitcoin. They never will."

No I want options I want the option to engage in completely free trade P2P at my own risk or the option to trade transparently in a protected environment. It is a trade off

It doent require government regulation to achieve what I desire.

I dont lock doors in my cars or home. I dont want to live in a world that it is necessary and it offers no protection, that is just the illusion of safety. I am not saying it can never work just that it doesnt work now the guys at ripple are working on some innovations that may make it viable.

I think this is the root of the problem in early human civilization trade was simple because you knew the history and reputation of the people that you traded with, but as civilizations grew the desire to trade outside of your trust network grew. So the need for middlemen and financial institutions came about. The problem is those institutions have siphoned off the productive efforts of their citizens or customers and have grown so powerful because of their privilege and have created a world dominated and control at gun point giving us ever growing police states and to big to fail banks that no longer work for us but that we work for.

So the challenge as I see it is to recreate early civilization. We have a technology that can enable the entire world to know each others reputation. We can know the character of every man women and child on the planet. I will gladly trade without institutions or the protection of the state if i can know who I am dealing with. So far the reputation centers around bitcoin all start from scratch, We need a reputaion center that allows you to import trust from other areas of life, I think the guys at ripple are working on that.

"Have you heard of something called 'risk assessment'?"

Ya, I like taking calculated risk. That is what my business selling coins for paypal was all about people said it couldnt be dont profitably. I proved that wrong sold 80,000 dollars worth to people without having any reputation center. I made 10 k profit. But I make a lot more with less head ache and risk in my other business. I work 20 hours or less a week from home and make around 50 k

You seem to be a generally good hearted person, and I hate to see bad things happen to good people. But if you learn anything from this incident, it should be that not everyone in this world is as good hearted as you are, and some of them have no issue with doing you harm. So please take my advice and take every step necessary to protect yourself, even if you feel you shouldn't have to. A good place to start would be locking your doors.

My undying respect?  But seriously, I live in Canada, where we respect life just a little bit more, and don't think we need weapons to prove ourselves.  If you come to my place and intend to do me harm, expect me to ask you to leave.   ;)

Canada has more guns per person than the US. Given the crime rate is lower you still need guns in Canada.

You might as well be arguing, "why bother having a deadbolt or a security system in your house. One lock should be enough, and if it isn't then the police should protect you."

I dont lock doors in my cars or home. I dont want to live in a world that it is necessary and it offers no protection, that is just the illusion of safety. Trusted finacial institutions dont offer true security either they steal from me all the time too that is what feedback is all about the best indication of future behavior is past behavior.

We are lucky if we wake up tomorrow. Safety is a illusion, but there are acceptable risk and unacceptable ones

after reading further , i find you to be a pathetic excuse for a grown up ........actually how old are you im guessing 17-18 , take responsibility for your life . not locking doors everyone doing everything for you , serious you sound like a fucking PUSSY get over your self man !!!!!!! lifes tuff if you think getting skanked 1.4 bitcoins is bad you wouldn't last 2 seconds in my shoes pal you would be eaten alive !!!!!!!!!!!!!

To the rest of the forum users im sorry for this out burst i just think this guy is Pathetic and someone should point that out!!!

Has Kurt as his profile picture and cries about his life and I am the whinny bitch. I bet you cired when your boyfriend blew his brains out.

Wonder where you read that.  It's not true.

I actually saw it on a dateline show or something similar. I think it was about why is there so much gun violence in the US and they were showing it's not because we have more guns then anywhere else and pointed out CA has more guns per person than the US. I never had a reason to look it up for myself, figures it would be untrue.

If asking someone who was intent on doing you harm to please leave worked then ya we wouldnt need guns, but the reason that everyone doesnt kill one another isnt because of locked doors or motion lights or home security systems. Criminals dont care if your car is locked. I can break in 90 percent of the cars on the road in under 15 min. Locked doors are no deterrent in a home filled with glass windows. If i am criminal I will just lay and wait and get you to enter the pass code on your home security system.

The real reason people dont go around killing one another is that 1 people are fundamentally good and 2 there is a credible use of force against them.
Criminals want to live too ( most of them ) and look for victims that are not a threat. I dont care if you know where i live or that my doors are unlocked if you know that I dont fear you and I believe me I dont.

Hey sublime5447,

Sorry for your loss...

From what I saw... you lost around $200 ? isn't that too little to just quit all the hard work you put into building your buy/sell btc?
(I am sorry if you have lost more than that but I only saw $200.... I must've been so lazy to read the entire post...)

Also, I think I saw you said about blockchain wallet.... so it must've been online... and blockchain should be blamed not you...?

I agree on some points you said that it is "THEIR JOB" to protect your account/money... isn't this what big online banks do... or paypal?

Also about having 2 computers... that's a little bit overkill...

I have ONE LAPTOP... but inside this ONE LAPTOP I got 5 other computers.... or so called VIRTUAL MACHINES... and if one gets infected.. it cannot infect the other or around.. unless the MAIN is infected which is impossible because the MAIN is not used for online.. only offline..

5 Virtual Machines has:

1 for business
1 for advertising
1 for publishing
1 for handling my online servers (I got a lot of sites)
1 for you know... (no kids allowed)

Hey buddy,

Na the 200 is nothing. It is about bigger issues. I just dont see how it can transition to something that can replace the dollar and that is my motivation.

Here is a much shorter thread  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=305240.0
