This actually may be related to yesterday's China-led rally. The announcement (published on 15 Oct) mentions that they start accept bitcoin on 14 Oct. There could be insider trading.

That's reasonable as they are not sure how many users will really pay in bitcoin and that's risky in investing a new payment system. There is no bitpay-equivalent in China. Also, their real intention may just be using this opportunity to advertise their service.

This was a service of another company started at Dec 2011, and Baidu acquired the company just on 2 Sept 2013. So yes, this is definitely an attempt to advertise the service. But any publicity is good publicity. This news has started circulating in all Chinese news sites.

It's a nice gesture and it's good to see more famous names associated with Bitcoin.

Perhaps China don't consider Bitcoin a virtual currency.

Seems reasonable to me.  Even if it's probably because they don't have a system set up yet for manual payments, there will probably only be a trickle at first and they would be wise to be wary of fraud attempts, so manually processing transactions until they get the hang of it is completely sensible.

I think Bitcoin isn't consired with this new regulations. The Chinese government seems very pro-Bitcoin.

Probably a poor translation of a Chinese expression that say that they enabled Bitcoin payment.

At least if China is using the term correctly, a ban on virtual currencies would indeed not impact Bitcoin, which is a digital currency, and specifically, within that category, the leading cryptocurrency.  "Virtual currency" is a narrow term referring, generally, to currencies used within virtual worlds or other gaming environments, whose primary purpose is to purchase in-world items.  China outlawed using these for the purchase of out-of-world items, largely as an anti-fraud measure, because as virtual currencies began to acquire real-world value, they were used for illegal purposes but, more importantly, were susceptible to insiders simply "printing" themselves as much virtual currency as they wanted for their own personal profit.  Specifically, an executive at Shanda Interactive Entertainment was sentenced to prison for creating a large amount of virtual currency for his own profit.

While Bitcoin has the same susceptibility to fraud and use in illegal activities as cash, it does not have the much more serious problem of one person unilaterally being able to create value out of thin air (essentially stealing it from other holders by deflating their holdings).  So if Baidu is doing this, I think they're on pretty solid ground.  If the Chinese government does ban Bitcoin, it will probably not be for the same reason as they banned using virtual currencies for real world purchases, as those reasons really only apply to virtual currencies that can be created willy-nilly by one entity.

Popularity surge

Bitcoin has been gaining in popularity in China over recent months, with data on SourceForge showing downloads of the Bitcoin-QT in China reaching 250,443 so far this year, beaten only by the US with 503, 819 but ahead of the UK with 106,931.

Not only this, but the volume of bitcoins traded with Chinese yuan is increasing. Bitcoincharts shows that Chinese yuan currently accounts for 12% of the total bitcoin exchange volume, while 68% is in US dollars and euro at 6%.

Last month, BTCChina CEO Bobby Lee confirmed that bitcoin was starting to boom in China.

“For the first time in human history, bitcoin has allowed people to save and defer purchasing power, in a digital form. The Chinese people love this concept! It explains bitcoin’s fast adoption in China this year – 2013 has been a breakout year for bitcoin, and even more so in China,” he said.

CoinDesk contacted Baidu for comment, but had not received a reply at time of publication.

Half the transactions are probably from forum goers who are going to confuse the people manually confirming transactions and turn this into a failed experiment.

I do believe that the Chinese attitude toward Bitcoin is quite different than the western attitudes, though. And I think the Chinese entrepreneurs (and government) recognize this is an opportunity to finally be a technological first-mover.

I see you don't understand the standard translation protocol of transliterating proper nouns, rather then translating them. I'm sure the term means something in Chinese, but the correct usage in this case is to transliterate it. It's why bitcoin was created by Satoshi Nakamoto, rather than "Satoshi during this" which is what I get when I run the name through Google Translate.

So, does this mean that all the cloudflare Bitcoin users are likely to switch? Then there are people like Gox that use a similar non-cloudflare service. If it actually does get all of them to switch, that is a non-negligible amount of extra revenue.

My observation is that most people who own bitcoin do not use bitcoin. So probably not, especially considering the difficulty of switching.

Why would a business with most of its income in the form of BTC rather than $, elect to exchange that BTC to $ to pay rather than just paying with BTC directly?

A few of thoughts regarding this:

Unless, as suggested above, this is something the Jashule team have gone ahead with independently of the mother-company what I'm liking the thought of is that Baidu, in doing something as controversial are in my opinion almost certainly have checked out with govt officials whether there was any imminent ban.

Much more than the number of customers or amount of bitcoins that are used to buy their services for me is that this may be seen by other companies who have been considering it but with caution.

I love that it comes the day after the Chinese official guy talking about the need to de-Americanize global finance so that the whole world doesn't have to hold its breath when US politicians are throwing toys out of their pram.

I love it that if it is true that this is a sign that China may allow cryptocurrencies to thrive (I know that's many ifs) then it puts real pressure on the States to get its act together. If there's one thing we can be sure of it is that fear of losing out on the global power stage is a massive motivator for the US.  If they realise there is a minute chance what is happening is a major redistribution of wealth they have a big incentive to get their act together and put a stop to the red-tape jungle that is all the various states with their own petty money transmission laws.

In the meantime the rest of the world has a chance to catch up a bit on the headstart the US had with Bitcoin.  And even though many of the early hoards may be owned by Americans, being of the crypto-libertarian kind this may not benefit the US power-hungry ruling classes much anyway :)

I'm struggling to think of anything bad about this other maybe than there's a danger of news and wild speculation getting out of hand and landing us in a massive rally followed by another severe correction.  But even if/when that happens it doesn't destroy the protocol, Bitcoin will prevail :)

Let's be realistic this is probably nothing to do with Baidu management or employees but some techy in a newly acquired subsidiary who convinced the boss to accept Bitcoin for their DDoS protection service.

I accept there is a realistic probability that this is the case (as I acknowledged).  However, we should know this pretty soon if it is the case because the publicity will force the hand of the mother company to do some research as to its legitimacy.  They could embrace it, just let the experiment run even if it wasn't deliberate or, if China really doesn't want Bitcoin to be more than a minuscule novelty, instruct them to quietly drop it.

Despite my initial skepticism, I agree. This is making headlines and will have the full attention of Baidu leadership. The next week or so will reveal whether this was just the action of an overenthusiastic employee.

It depends on how Baidu works internally and how much freedom is given to subsidiaries. For a big company like Baidu they should have all these rules written.

That's good news for the bitcoin community ! :) From experience quite a few of friends and even clients started to use / accept bitcoin for their product as we try to take the time to explain about bitcoin when asked about it. The Chinese are very upset with the dollar, and would be happy to undermine it. That is evident from even a cursory glance at the news.

Maybe they see Bitcoin as a political opportunity.

It would be a smart political play from their perspective in my opinion as it relies less on the US backed debt-securities and rather on something that they can make into a global trading mechanism

I think Facebook and Tweeter are both free. Why do they need bitcoin? I don't think receiving bitcoin from big advertisement clients make sense.

En re. Twitter, I was in reference to them embracing it as a payment option via tweets, akin to what some Bitcoiner has already done but on a grander scale. Once the tweeps are acclimated, the currency would be used for any product and service Twitter WILL later provide.

After the IPO, Twitter will be on the crowded battlefield to show a profit each and every quarter to their stockholders, and there's only so many ways to cut the status quo pie, but if they think outside the box it puts the other social media entities in the position of playing defence.

Good news for bitcoin users. Bitcoin getting more popular

A quick scan shows maybe 30k BTC on the open books of all the exchanges combined.  And they've been evaporating quickly and not being replaced effectively.  Looks to me like panic is starting to set in.  Many people are probably feeling like if they don't get some BTC now, it will be to late and they'll have to pay much higher prices or simply be left behind...and they could be right.

If history repeats, or even rhymes, then there will certainly be a crash but it might be only to much higher levels than we see today, and might only last a brief time before it's next point of stability.  Hopefully that will occur well into the 4-fig range in USD/BTC terms.  We'll see.

Some of the last few posts are in need of a split off to Speculation, but I'd say the question is not "will or won't there be a crash", it's "CAN there be a crash". As long as the markets allow bid depth all the way down to $0.0001 cents or whatever the lowest allowed bid is, yes, there can be a crash. And if you market sell all the way down to there, or allow your bot(s) to do that, then seriously, leave and never come back.

Glad to see more and more companies getting behind bitcoin.  It's great to see small local businesses accept bitcoin but when some really big names/players start accepting bitcoins it really has a much larger impact on raising awareness about bitcoin and has a larger ripple effect of other companies wanting to look into doing the same.

Simple panic reaction....when price goes up, everyone is buying them, when the price goes down, everyone is dumping them. And that is why btc needs a few years to become mature.

Why? Baidu is about 30% of Google's in terms of total user, and it barely moved the price.

Baidu has barely started using it.  The important factor is how the government acts.

If 1B people find something which is available in 1M quantities to be useful, the math suggests a pretty high valuation on a per unit basis.

Bitcoin appeals to me because it is democratic.  Users choose how it works by choosing what software to run.  If the Chinese government tolerates Bitcoin and Western governments do not, it will become rooted in China and Chinese people will dictate the course of the solution.  That is actually fine with me since the big decision to be made is how to deal with the looming block-size issue.  I'd trust your average Chinese to make a rational decision on this farther than I would trust the Western high-schoolers and fuzzy-thinking Libertardians which permeate the solution currently.

The other reason it would be a welcome development to have much of the activity be within the Chinese sphere of influence would be that as an American, Chinese state sponsored network analysis does not really impact me that much.  China and the US may do 'prisoner swap' type operations on data collection but it will have a level of inconvenience which will go some distance toward preserving my privacy, and would likely be relatively easy to skirt if I needed to.  This is more of a factor if/when the block size is unleashed and we move to a 'super-node' architecture.
